Police: Columbus man exploits loophole in Ohio law to steal 1,100+ catalytic converters

- During a nine-month investigation, central Ohio law enforcement built a case that led to one of the largest takedowns of an alleged catalytic converter thief.
Isn’t that nice. The politician had 8 cars on a property he owns get stripped of parts and immediately introduced a new law to stop it. Why does it take so long to do that when they’re not personally affected?
Ironic huh?
You make a great point!
I guess if it happens to them then it matter.
Because he hadn't been personally affected, until he was personally affected.
It's almost like there's a cause and effect where *his* interests are concerned. Hmmm.
Since catalytic converters are required by Federal law it should be a federal offense for stealing one

Brilliant comment!
Tampering with an emission device is a federal offense. Specifically, it says removal as one of the qualifiers. The feds have cannabis prohibition so which gets the 5 o'clock news?
@@billsmith3493 they won't prosecute them but now they are going to fine or imprison anyone in NY who gets caught putting an aftermarket muffler on their vehicle
If caught trying/ stealing should be a mandatory minimum of 10 years in federal prison with zero chance of early release.
He’s exploiting a loophole to SELL the converters - not to steal them. The exploiting of the loophole happens after they’ve been stolen not before
Stupid and inaccurate headline.
On top of that, when discussing what you can do to prevent, they fail to mention the extruded metal cage that was featured earlier in the video. And they include 'insurance" under the same category of "preventing".

To shit with any loophole. Hes a piece of shit thief.
Absence of law is not a loophole. In fact, the man, via the creation of a business, was adhering to the law to sell the converters- with the exception of how he was acquiring the converters. So, theft and selling stolen property was the crime and it wasn’t being done via a loophole.
Also a law isn't a loophole, loophole is a made up political word for some politician to use when they don't like the outcome
The loophole was about selling more than one per day, not the legality of the entire operation.
@@Parker-- still the word loophole is a bullshit word for their failure at solving a problem or used for political or social attack against an opponent or adversary to present in a bad light
Yep as long as u aquire with consent it should not be a problem to sell
Can't they just go after the scrapyards for receiving stolen property? You've gotta know something's fishy.

As an English teacher, I thank you for pointing out the flaw in a title like this.
Lawmakers care about the things they think will keep them in office, they don't care about your problems unless they think they can benefit.
Only the truly smart people realize this. Lawmakers are looking out for themselves, not you
I agree with you. It's been like this for a while too.

Just keep letting people get away with it like every state has been doing for years and years. It’s sickening. Start giving these scumbags 50 years in prison for first offense and crime may slow down or just keep giving probation and it’ll keep getting worse. I’m so sick of the complaining from everyone!! DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!!!!!
Even if you catch the thief in the act before he/she get away with your CC, if they’ve already begun the sawing process, you’re still looking at a substantial repair bill to include if the mechanic can actually still use your equipment. The problem is that there are any number of auto parts dealers willing to look the other way to make a quick buck. Someone rolling up to a salvage yard with a truck full of CC should be immediately reported to law enforcement. If they were legitimately obtain, complete the transaction and move on. Thieves won’t steal these things if there’s not a market to fence them through.
I love how the officer tried to frame it as he was the first one to do it even though the state is one of the the worst in terms of this crime so he clearly wasn't the first

He was in a ring of people doing the same thing and had a ridiculous amount of money at his disposal from the theft, so with a bond he would probably have gotten out easy
Many time they said the bond is higher than a murderer but actually they take the theft to the police station for seating one hour then he can go home with paying nothing.

Doesn't this technically teach: "do crimes to politicians so they can make meaningful changes" or something?
Sure you would take the fall, but hey, you might get some valuable internet clout ya know?
(in case you are wondering, I am joking lmao)
What an outstanding citizen. So when someone shows up to the scrap yard with like 30 converters no one finds that suspicious and calls the cops? especially with this fine looking guy dropping them off?!?!
We had a problem with people stealing copper electrical wiring and copper water pipes. Our D.A. told the local scrap yards that if they took pictures of ID for scrappers and made a picture of the items being scrapped, they had no worry from him. If they failed to comply, they would be charged with receiving stolen property. They complied and thefts of wire and pipe are almost zero.
Yeah it’s not hard to enforce, the scrap yards typically know when they’re taking stolen goods but usually there’s no repercussions for them so they don’t care. They just have to be pushed to put forth the smallest amount of effort to verify the stuff they’re buying is legit, and 95% of it would stop.
The problem is they see a crack head trying to sell a cat, and they know it’s stolen, so in their mind it’s an opportunity to lowball and get a cat much cheaper than from a legitimate source. A guy who owns a muffler shop won’t take $50 for a cat he knows is worth $300, but a crack head with a stolen cat will take that $50 and run because he just wants to be rid of it.
I lived in a neighborhood where a family put their home up for sale. They vacated it as he had accepted a job in another state and moved his family accordingly with him. He was handling the sale through a realtor. Well, some POS must have been scouting out the place and knew it was empty unless it was being shown. Somehow in the middle of the night (without alerting anyone) they removed all the copper piping from the A/C system and pretty much destroyed it. How you could do this without waking up the neighbors is beyond me, but they did it. The guy ended up having to file a claim and get the unit replaced which I’m sure ran into the $8-$10K price range.
He's got a bond higher than most murderers lol this guy should be lucky he didn't get murdered stealing all those people's shit
Still, the fact that most murderers get a lower bond than a thief is some backwards sh!t

Here's an idea. Instead of a law "closing the loophole" how about trying this unique idea... "When someone commits a crime, and is convicted, you put them in jail. THEN (and here's the crazy part) you KEEP them in jail until they serve their sentence." You would be surprised at how few catalytic converters are stolen by people sitting in jail.
You know that sounds so crazy that it might actually work!!!
Liberals dont like keeping people in jail. Most people are caught, processed and released.
Or we adopt some of the Middle East laws. We catch this guy stealing catalytic converters, 'sentence' is driving a car over his hand. You'd be surprised how hard it is to steal catalytic converters with no hands.
@@robertcross7571 Liberals wouldn't allow that
Nah the loophole seems pretty important to change. A new criminal will be made. Keeping people in jail doesn't help
The new law totally makes sense. But please stop calling "something that you wish was illegal but isn't" a "loophole".
True, a loophole implies that it's a way to legally do something otherwise illegal. If the acts had been legal, the police wouldn't even have had a reason to arrest that suspect. The new law fixes the problem that it was too easy to get away with the crime of stealing car parts. Or if you want, with the crime of dealing in stolen car parts (which had also been illegal before).

@@Joe-jv7ys it's nice driving a vehicle what doesn't need or have a converter ,i live in Iowa and they don't require inspections here or SMOG checks ,,huge numbers of vehicles would be JUNKED if inspections were required ,,all the salt used on our roads DESTROY vehicles ,,,i'm currently rebuilding a 2010 chevy 3500 which had a hole rusted in it's frame due to salt ,,there are hundreds of thousands of vehicles in iowa and nebraska that should be parked and junked because of rust ,with no inspections it never happens
Anyone in possession of one needs a year in prison, per each one. Same goes to anyone purchasing them.
1.500 for a cat? nah lady you're getting scammed by your dealership, they're costing you more than the thieves LMAO
2 Things I hate, are liars and thieves. My Great Grand Mother always said "If you can lie, you can steal and if you can steal you can kill". I can understand why some societies chop off the hands of thieves.
Well people in poor ass countries steal to live. You really shouldn't have to do it in America so the arm chopping thing here would be reasonable for repeat offenders, imo.
If you agree with chopping someone's hand off for a minor crime then you'll agree with killing people for minor crimes, and if you'll agree with killing people for minor crimes then you'll agree with killing people for things that aren't even crimes.
Is that some sort of explicit permission?
Even an honest man should be able to kill somebody when their hands get forced.
If I shoot dead a home invader that doesn't mean I'd also steal from you.
Doesn’t mean it isn’t dumb to chop hands off.
“A father of five and a grandfather” like who the F cares. He is nasty
Yeah. He stopped being a family man when he decided to steal
@@EnterpriseXI missing the point guy.
@@rickileah080 What I meant was he stopped caring about his family when he resorted to crime
He looks like a crack or meth head, 40 year old with the face of 70.
@@EnterpriseXI gain some perspective jesus
I can't even express how pissed off I'd be, if I started my vehicle and realized converter was gone.
Using tracking devices to commit crimes needs to carry an automatic 25 years without parole sentence.
Hell yeah 👍!!! Good score bro!!!
This need to be classified as a special crime with special punishment, along with copper theft. Lock these scumbags up for a long long time.
Our highest level of police in America only made 2 arrests for Epstein island when thousands of child rapists were indulging there. Why would anyone really care about some catalytic converters? Our country is a fucking disaster.
Strap them over a barrel and beat their ass like in Singapore.
What does the high temp paint do? Like let's say I spray my exhaust with that. How will that deter that thief from stealing my shit?
lol start wit your politicians
"He got higher bond than most murderers"
Thats right, They want to make sure no family or friends could afford to bail him out.
He looks like He won't even show up at his own trial if he's out on bail.
Good cuz he's taking money out of people's pockets they can't get the work
If he's a flight risk, he shouldn't have had a bond at all. He's clearly guilty of some crimes here so he should get comfortable in prison. Hey, look at it from a positive side. Do the softer jail time for a few months and save that from the rougher prison sentence.
His family is scrapping converters trying to raise the money
3 of the dumbest comments ive ever heard theft is a low level offense and he has a bond higher than a murder suspect..that just shows how fucked up the judicial system is and how it punishes crimes according to popular opinion instead real merit..and yall defending that shit are part of the problem not the solution..granted he committed several crimes but if a woman beater or child molester can post bail than why is a thief being so unfairly treated.
Stupid people make right turns on red in states where its not legal because there are no lights to tell them not to...
I'm confused, this guy said it raise the cost of insurance but when mine was stolen in Ohio they said they don't cover that
I’ve got a garage full of straight piping and a welder, so if someone would like to steal the converter of my truck you be saving me some time😂😂😂
If you catch them in the act, remember that turning the handle counter-clockwise to lowers the jack.
Change the damn law Ohio 😡.
If they do 80-140 years in prison criminals will think twice before doing it
Tbh I'd go to Ohio just to get that useless part removed for free 😂
Damn dude. Get a job please.
He has a job now, stamping license plates!

You guys said the thief was the first person to figure out the loophole, but then blamed that loophole for the fact that Ohio is 8th in the nation for most catalytic converters stolen. Did this thief figure it out first, but a long time ago?
No, he’s just the first one to get caught doing it.

Bad news reporters are bad. Nevermind the 5400 other ohio business who use this "loophole" every day, LEGALLY.

@Jacko Sargs Maybe true except the video you're commenting on explicitly blamed the loophole for the fact that Ohio is 8th in stolen converters, which is why I'm asking the question
Get A Rattler Snake and Tie that Venemous Snake around that Catalytic Convertor Over Night, You Can Also Get a Viper Snake Aswell...

What can you do?
Set your car up as bait.
When the thieves show up you start picking them off, like squirrels at a bird feeder.
Easy now Chris Kyle...
That may work if the thief is on your property but you are going to have a hard time justifying it if your car is on the sidewalk or public area.

Here in Texas, these thieves have been shot while doing this... I remember an article awhile back where the owner of the vehicle just got in the vehicle and drove over the thief before he could get out from under the car... I don't have a problem with either of these two solutions...
they should be dealt with lead. people need their car to work to make money to live. an attack on someone's car is an attack on their life.
Cheaper to kill criminals than house them
Ah man, I GOTTA MOVE OUT OF NEW YORK !
My family had an oil company in Texas and this happened in the late 80's. They kept getting equipment stolen form their property. Eventually my family was told by a law enfacement official that if they caught the thieves to just shoot them. make sure the thieves are on their property, and to call this guy directly and he would take care of it.
I get that this sounds cool and all, but personally I value a human life (even a shitty human) more than my catalytic converter.
“HE GOT A BOND HIGHER THAN MOST MURDERERS” nobody sees an issue with that?
Not with his bond for 32 felonies. IMO, murderers should not receive bond, they should sit.
Oh boo fukn hoo, that pos should be lucky he even got a bond...
@@charliebelle6693 ….in a hole while buried alive! Toots!
Well Mike, the op here, yes I think there are plenty of people that have a problem with that. The least of which probably is _NOT_ Tommy Cox himself, the "mastermind" responsible for this particular crime ring.
Yah, the issue is the murderers don't get the death penalty asap
Smelters caught taking in stolen property should lose their business license and sentenced the same way
