I was working at Walmart as the asset protection a few years back when we escorted someone back to our office after a misunderstanding when the self checkout failed The lady was so very polite and went right back to pay for the missed items 2 days later I was fired for not pressing criminal charges and involving law enforcement. Mind you this was a single mother with 2 kids. Walmart will forever be a disgusting stain on retail.
That is exactly what happened to me! The cop didn't even want to arrest me but she didn't have a choice because they were so adamant about pressing charges over about $40 worth of food although the surveillance video clearly showed me scan every single item and the scanner messing up without me noticing. Smh so wrong that they are able to do this to people

When you ask your customers to be your untrained cashiers, they’re going to make mistakes. Walmart needs to be held accountable for these horrible business practices.
Right, Americans aren't capable of doing these type tasks and one state knows it already and prevents self service gas stations. Laws should say all product exchanges in stores, gas stations, EV recharging as a payment card has to be used, purchase of tickets etc. should all be required to go thru properly trained cashiers that do whatever activities necessary, This will also reduce people on welfare due to the large number of people necessary and the great increase in employment will add lots of taxes to the governments while reducing welfare costs.
“We do not believe the verdict is supported by the evidence.” Do you mean the video evidence you refused to bring forth that would have shown she did not shop lift. What a bunch 🐕💩
The police do this all the time. Arrest innocent people and get away with it. People are forced to take plea bargains to avoid expensive trials. Never believe a criminal record.
That's EXACTLY what I was going to say!!! This is one reason why I don't shop there... plus, I've had EX-employees tell me what it's like to work there.

Its interesting that they withheld the video that would have proved her innocence, because this is something that government prosecutors do, and they get away with it. They withhold exculpatory evidence routinely, so that they can railroad people through the legal system and they do this because they have prosecutorial immunity. That needs to change. They can and have ruined many people’s lives with no repercussions, even after the person was found to be innocent. Sounds to me like Walmart is reading from the same playbook.

The court figured the Walmart rep didn't care enough to show so their isn't a case therefore ruled "not guilty" by default. It’s always the big box companies that do this. I bought a plant from a mom and pop store and the cashier forgot to ring it up, when I was checking my receipt when I got home I noticed, and when I called to let them know and offer to pay they just told me to keep the plant, it was like 15$, and this is a local business during Covid. They need that money. Walmart going nuts over 45$, while making around one BILLION dollars a day is just insane. Human greed at its finest with these ceos
My sister was maybe 5 at the time this incident happened, but we went to a Sally’s and she picked up a cheap cardboard mail file while the rest of the fam was shopping. Somehow the sensors didn’t go off in alarm when she walked out with it, and none of us even knew she had it till we got to the car, so my mom brought her back in the store, explained the situation, and the manager let her keep the nail file for being brave enough to be honest and apologize for it. Meanwhile my cousin’s 2 year old little cousin did something similar at Walmart and she didn’t know about it till they got home, so she called Walmart up and the guy on the phone told her not to return the item, even if it’s just to pay for it because according to store policy they’d have to mugshot her son and display it on the bulletin board for everyone to see that he’s a “thief”, file a police report against him and possibly press formal charges, and ban him from the store for life... What tf is wrong with Walmart? They make way more than these other stores yet they tray their customers like sh-t.
So let me get this straight Pater, you stole from a struggling small business that couldn’t afford to be robbed, and now you’re justifying theft from larger businesses because they’re big. You’re a literally the exact reason they do this.
Unfortunately I heard of this happening to an old lady who had been trying to buy something and the cashier failed to scan one item that was given to her, yet the old woman was the one who was arrested and charged. Abuse of power indeed.
And don't forget about the 73 year old lady in Aurora CO. There are cameras on all those cash registers. That should have been caught by the loss prevention person before the police were called, but in the event it went to court, she would have been cleared.
I've noticed that over here in the UK our Walmart stores "Asda" overcharge for lots of items that you wouldn't notice if you weren't scanning the items yourself. My fix is to not shop at Wal-Mart. I watched a new Walmart practically destroy my old small hometowns businesses so fast it seemed planned. Nearly every single small business in the city closed down if they had to compete with Walmart, they went out of business in a year, two years tops. Walmart is not good for cities and towns. @@alexapuerta No. He is talking about the defendants. The woman, who filed the lawsuit against Walmart, is the plaintiff. The defendants (Walmart et al.) are the ones that refused to provide evidence to back up their claim that Nurse was shoplifting.
This blows my mind the fact that they made a legit innocent person go through this but they will gladly let real thieves steal hundreds and thousands of dollars right out the door and watch them. This is sickening. I'm glad she got what she deserved and patiently waited for. Well I guess Walmart learned that Karma is a b*tch 😂😅
Totally agree. I feel like the system, either Walmart as an individual company or the legal system, goes after an honest citizen fast while letting real criminals loose. I guess it is easy to go after an honest person, who does not want trouble.
"We continue to believe our associates acted appropriately and we don't believe the verdict is supported by the evidence". REALLY? You have just been ordered to pay someone $2.1 million and you still can't man up and admit you were wrong? The attitudes of this company are beyond incredible.
The delusion is off the charts. The evidence aka their own video surveillance they refused to show which of course would have incriminated them. Very convenient.

About 40 years ago when my brother was 2 he took a pack of gum from the grocery store. My mom marched him back there and made him apologize to the store and hand it over. I think a store like Wal Mart probably would have called the police on him.
That happened to me, too! When I thought my son took a toy at Walmart, I did that as well. I thought the woman was going to call the cops on us, and I deeply regretted the lesson he got taught that day. They were assholes!
@@sgtmomOKit doesn't surprise me that they treated you that way even though you took responsibility for a wrong (or a perceived wrong). I mistakenly walked out of a Walgreens one-time with an unpaid item (the other items were paid for and it was just overlooked), and in a panic I headed straight back and told them what happened, and paid for it. Thankfully, Walgreens and Walmart are not to be confused with one another. The person at the counter appreciated my honesty and rung it up without any incident.
I was accused of stealing at Walmart when I was 15. My brother just got his first pay check and wanted to get me something nice. I picked a beautiful white dress. He also insisted on stockings and shoes as well. They took us into the back room, dumped out my purse on the floor and then took our items out of the bags and threw them on the floor as well. When I said, “Aw my pretty little dress 😢” the guy said, “huh? This shitty little dress?” Then stepped on it and told me I could pick it up and that he’d wait. Obviously he didn’t find anything. Even after practically making my brother strip down! Then told us to leave and not come back. They sent me a letter to pay $300 or they press criminal charges. I was young and scared so I begged my grandma to help me pay it. Walmart is and will always be trash 🗑 In my mind, my money is hers now. I’m glad it’s going to good use. Even if it’s 13 years later
I’m very sorry that happpened to you. Hearing these horror stories of Walmart makes me feel good that my dad never took me and my brother to Walmart. We stuck to Kroger, target and fiesta. Walmart seems to be taking advantage of the anxiety people get when accused of crimes. It’s also funny how Walmart employees and security do nothing when a person walks through the door and the alarm goes off but love to accuse people who paid and have a bag and receipt of theft 😬
What you seem to forget is the purpose for self checkout terminals. Using them the business says wages , benefits, government remittances like un-employment, social security etc and lets not forget about sick days that cost the company money…….wait a minute, a malfunctioning terminal is like a sick employee but a sick employee doesnt cost the company 2.1 million dollars!
Good for her. I used to manage an organization that would allow people to work off court sentences via community service. About half of them were Walmart shoplifters - one lady charged with less than $5 of makeup left in her cart, and once a bag of candy the cashier dropped and put in the bag without scanning. One young man was arrested for buying vanilla because he was too young to buy alcohol - it's in the baking section. Every one of them offered to pay for the items, but instead Walmart said no. I haven't shopped in Walmart since 1986 due to their predatory practices and will never step foot in another one .
They also promote their worst employees to store managers...who then treat both customers and employees horribly. I know several people (a couple are family members) who have worked for Walmart, and every one of them had store managers who were power-tripping, abusive asshats who had no clue how to do their job.
Walmart is really TRASH for this! Playing around with people's lives and their careers! Attorneys across the country need to team up with these same Attorneys who won this case to get back every cent Walmart has gotten from innocent people!👏👏👏🙏 SMH 🤦♀️

Wow they found another income stream: 300+ million dollars from wrongfully accused people of shoplifting?! Criminal. It totally looks like common practice. They ruin those people’s life for pure greed.
But they're so "self explanatory" coming from someone who is an ex employee of Walmart, and had that same talk with management. It's not fair to people needing jobs nor people that don't know how to use the damn things.
Walmart has some nerve. They won't admit wrongdoing even after the trial, and say they have evidence, when they clearly don't. I hope the woman and her family can move on from this. Good for her for not giving in, even though it was a stressful process.
People have a pattern of behavior: And that *_Director of Media_* relations sure likes to run his mouth: ...Really, he's almost on the edge of attempting to push his opinions & beliefs as if it's based on FACT when he mentions "evidence". ...Her lawyer should call him up & pretend to be a reporter to get him to "clarify" his position... ...Could be grounds for a million dollar defamation suit if he slips up & says the wrong thing !!!
Walmart is not the only place. 3 places i worked at during a “team meeting” would remind employees to never admit any wrong doing., or fault. They would even tell us to never say “sorry” “my apologies” or anything along those lines when a customer is angry from being wronged. They do not want any liability for anything, even if they did do something wrong. They couldn’t care less. When there is a lawsuit, they will just put the blame on somebody else. Trust me, these people are heartless, and it shows. They’re parasites that only want money.
You really need to pay attention at the Walmart self check. I was using it and everything seemed like it was working normally. Scan an item, it shows up on the screen and does the usual beep. Packed up my bag and grabbed my receipt. I decided to check it and it showed only about half the items that I had rang up. Good thing I checked. When I called over the person monitoring the self check, they just said "oh yeah, it does that sometimes". WTF!
Does that sometimes?! Looks like they want f peoples lives up with that one. I bet you didn’t get that recorded. You’d have an easy case with that one, since it is a known issue.
That sounds shady, it's as if the machines are designed to do that to entrap people, accuse them of shoplifting then blackmail $200 from them which most people pay. I use the self checkout at my local grocery all the time and it's never done that.
It adds things too without even scanning them I had 4 magazines added to my total I'm glad I knew what i was paying for because it seemed over and when I checked I was like wow went stright to customer service and said I want my money back the lady got an attitude and said it's not my fault I told her I didn't say it was but I'm not paying for something I didnt even buy they then refunded my money walmart is not trustworthy at all
It's unconscionable how a large company would risk it's reputation over a so-called shoplifting incident they can't prove. In the end, they end up paying the victim millions more than the small amount the person was willing to pay for items in the store. Total incompetence on the part of management.
Walmart does not care, they dont even care about their "peons" I should know been there (working). They dont give 2 craps. They show boat/act like they do to cover their own rear ends.
I was charged 500$ along with going to jail when I didn't actually steal from them. I scanned all of my items and they said the girls outfits weren't on clearance when in fact they were. I had no idea I would've been able to actually fight it. And no I didn't pay them 500$. Fuck them.
@@SnootchieBootchies27 If they're making that much and willing to pay out millions to individuals for a bit of trouble, it'll give others ideas on conducting "profitable shoplifting". 🙂

I was in upper management at Walmart as well as another top 5 retail business and I can tell you that it’s very common for more loss to occur internally than externally (customer theft).
A simple, "Miss, it turns out your payment didn't go through," and bringing her back to the register would've resolved everything. I can't believe the exec at the end saying the associates acted correctly... Unless, it's all part of a corporate plan to scam customers out of more money, which is supported by the fact that they didn't produce the video from self checkout.
would it have? Doesn't that just give a thief an opportunity to make it correct since they got caught.....But you don't get a receipt if your payment didn't go through - so was she under the impression that she had paid just no reciept printed out????
That is exactly how it happened to me. Receipt showed one item missing and they asked me to pay for it. They asked cashier woman to be more careful scanning items. They thanked me apologized for inconvenience and that was the end of the story.
@@gregsegura210 No you get a receipt even if your card gets declined it just says card was declined on it. Had a friend get fired from walmart after he got some food from the deli for break and got fired because of it even though he got a receipt.
Walmart accused me of stealing a spool of thread that slipped through the the cart and called the cops on me. The Walmart employees were very rude to me and belittled me over spool of thread. They wanted me to pay $600 for restitution. I hired a lawyer that helped me with this accusation but Walmart was relentless and thank goodness no one from the store showed up at court. The judged ruled in my favor. $600 for a $2 spool of thread. I don't shop at any Walmart because of this. It was wrong for them to treat me like that even though it was accidental and I didn't notice the thread had fell through the shopping cart. They will treat a person really bad if they suspect shoplifting. $600 for a $2 spool of thread. Way to go Wally world I hope you feel bigger and better for treating a customer so unfairly over a spool of thread. Shame on you WM
I'm glad the court ruled in your favor, but did Wal-Mart have to pay court costs and your legal fees? Often they dont, and that wouldn't cover loss of reputation, loss of worktime, false arrest or anything else. These bastards need to be nailed to the wall.
?? Let's be honest... that sleazy company has all kinds of money making scams that they use to exploit their customers and employees, profiting in the hundreds of millions of dollars, from just that single scam for decades, without anyone knowing about it. (You can be sure that the Walmart suits have found a different way to continue harassing customers accused of shoplifting, so the greedy and corrupt Walmart family members, can continue to make hundreds of millions of dollars every year, from that scam.)
I wouldn't use self check out simply because we need to support jobs and those self checkouts may be convenient but they are taking jobs away from people
A Walmart employee told me last week that every Walmart plans on taking out all tobacco products and putting in all self checkout and said that's how they make more money making people work to check themselves out and don't get paid to do it
Originally I was like, "she shouldn't have got that much money", then after seeing how much Walmart makes demanding large sums from people to prevent further lawsuits whether they are guilty or not...screw them, give this woman the money.
Walmart is greed and all about greed when sam walton was alive things and customers and employees attitudes were different look at rising prices and the hugh profits walmart has amassed on us their customers
She should have received more! She was arrested for something she did not do! Lost her job and ability to provide for her family and then they wanted HER to pay them? Naw f*** that!
I think WM should go back over EACH case they had where people did pay their fee, PROVE they were guilty without a shadow of a doubt and if they cannot, refund their "fine" at 10 times their loss to make them whole again. If they do have proof, however, then whatever judgement the courts found against the person should obviously stand unless they requested a retrial and then prove their innocence.
Now Walmart is mad and trying to say it wasn't fair they had to pay her so much in damages. They obviously didn't like were it hurt them at in their bank account. Too bad sucks to be them.
I haven't stepped foot in a Walmart for years, just because of how they treat their employees, and the huge scandal awhile back where they got caught taking out life insurance policies on their employees so when an elderly door-greeter passed away, Walmart got a paycheck. Absolutely sickening. Sam Walton would be furious at what these greedy corporate scumbags have done to his store; they're pissing on everything he stood for when he built his legacy.
Sam Walton was okay with paying below average wages for 3 decades and taking money from our taxes to give his employees food stamps and public assistance while he pocketed billions ....I shouldn't be paying for employees to eat from my paycheck, that should come from THEIR billions in profits.
what is wrong for taking out life insurance policies on employees? There is a cost associated with filling in their spot in the short term and with hiring a replacement. And there could be a survivor death benefit that they fund. Companies call it risk management. This shows that they know that their employees are valuable,
I worked for Albertsons years ago when they first opened in Florida. I saw the manager of the side of the store where there are no groceries put a camera in a woman's purse. They called him a drug manager. He did not see me. He then proceeded to wait until she walked out. There was a code over the intercom for theft and about ten male employees exploded outside after her. The front end manager walked toward the door and I called out to her. I told her what I saw. She called the grocery manager, the store manager and the police. I remember they had some kind of surveillance back then. She pulled it so that manager could not change it. He was arrested not the customer and almost everyone who worked there was thrilled. We did not like him
Wait, did she actually intentionally steal? It sounds like the scanner thing messed up and the employees even didn’t know what was wrong. I would sue for false charges, not just an intimidation tactic. This is bananas.

She won the lottery when Walmarts rep didn't show up to court. For all we know the rep may have hated his job and decided not to show.
The accused did what any sane person would do and asked that the charges to be dropped. The court figured the Walmart rep didn't care enough to show so their isn't a case therefore ruled "not guilty" by default.

Nearly every single small business in the city closed down if they had to compete with Walmart, they went out of business in a year, two years tops. Walmart is not good for cities and towns. Their lure of jobs is a false lure often having devastating impacts on the existing small businesses. Force everyone nearby to work at Wal-Mart due to it being the only job in town at slave wages with garbage benefits. Its been proven over and over again that many of Wal-Marts full time employees still qualify for government assistance. This amounts to the American taxpayer co funding Walmart to underpay its employees at the taxpayers expense. Don't blame the store for that. I can assure you that no associate is supposed to accuse a person of stealing anything. About 40 years ago when my brother was 2 he took a pack of gum from the grocery store. My mom marched him back there and made him apologize to the store and hand it over. I think a store like Wal Mart probably would have called the police on him.

Walmart is and will always be trash 🗑

*_hire_ (not"higher")
And _no, that is a terrible idea, for multiple_ reasons.
Exactly

Yeah. Always check things out throughly because machines like to malfunction
Oh yes, let’s put the burden on the consumer rather than the owners of the machines itself to ensure they’re working properly!
That sounds shady, it's as if the machines are designed to do that to entrap people, accuse them of shoplifting then blackmail $200 from them which most people pay.
I use the self checkout at my local grocery all the time and it's never done that.
It adds things too without even scanning them I had 4 magazines added to my total I'm glad I knew what i was paying for because it seemed over and when I checked I was like wow went stright to customer service and said I want my money back the lady got an attitude and said it's not my fault I told her I didn't say it was but I'm not paying for something I didnt even buy they then refunded my money walmart is not trustworthy at all
They collected 314 million and only paid out 2.1 million. This will not stop wm
It's unconscionable how a large company would risk it's reputation over a so-called shoplifting incident they can't prove. In the end, they end up paying the victim millions more than the small amount the person was willing to pay for items in the store. Total incompetence on the part of management.
The problem is most people didn't fight it. Walmart made 314 million, paid out 2.1 million, they're still so far into the green they are laughing.
