- At least one alleged catalytic converter thief was shot during an exchange of gunfire with a witness to the incident early Thursday in Oakland's Upper Dimond neighborhood, according to police and neighbors.

People are damned tired of just sitting back, doing nothing, just being a "good witness" and calling the police when this kind of theft is so rampant and the criminal justice system goes way easy on the criminals. New legislation isn't making a difference in catalytic converter thefts. It's still out of control.
yup cops dont even show up, then you are stuck with a huge bill for the converter being stolen.
Cops don't give a damn. My father's car got its cat stolen in front of the house. Reported it and no cop showed up to take the report and evidence. So my 94 y.o. elderly father had no means to get around for months.
The neighbor with the gun should be honored and congratulated, NOT put in handcuffs!! That was outrageous!

I agree. OPD should have the experience to immediately tell who's the suspect and who is defending himself. It's not like it's a spy movie where there are double agents everywhere.
The PD has procedures for a reason, if the police don’t follow them and something goes south it’s not just their job on the line but their life or freedom. Let them do their jobs instead of worrying about hurt feelings for being detained. If he was arrested it would be another story but he wasn’t and I don’t see him complaining just keyboard warriors.

There needs to be a law passed nationwide that gives any citizen out here who catches a converter thief in the act a free for all to shoot at them because at this point it's safe to assume they're all armed. I've seen so many incidents like this where they are shooting at people who confront them that I think we can all just assume they're armed with guns and should be treated as such. It should be a mandatory 10 year minimum prison sentence for this crime with no chance of parole meaning they'll have to spend that entire 10 years in prison no matter what.

Be a good witness? As much as I salute our men and women in uniform let’s face it. Your property get stolen, you call the police and they tell you file a report and have a good night. This is extreme but perhaps is a good warning to those that want to take shortcuts in life. At first it’s just annoying, then it’s frustrating, then now you can’t put food in the table because you need to fix your car to go to work. I feel we are at the breaking point where enough is enough and the police isn’t able to help so I applaud this man for firing back. He didn’t fire back until fired upon and unfortunately our crime harboring laws may still land him in jail but hopefully it’s light.

If you are ever in this situation, you tell the police the thief came at you with the saw and you shot him in self defense. Never tell them you shot the thief because they were stealing from you. If police ask you why you went out there, tell them you wanted to be a good witness and get an accurate description for them.

Everyone Interviewed seems to be the type of people who will complain about a problem but will always find something negative to say about anybody’s attempt to fix said problem. The homeowner didn’t come out guns a blazing he just told them to stop steeling neighbors property . He only returned fire and spears he did a pretty good job.

They actually handcuffed the neighbor for protecting the young mother of the 18 month old and for defending their neighborhood. Got an estimate of police response time ?
We are actually seeing more and more instances where the citizens in most cities across the United States are forced to act on their own, in protecting their families, largely due to police department's budget cuts and rampant defunding of police services. Waiting for a 911 emergency response could either lead to a loss of life to the victim and or their families. Some have reported having been put on hold, while a life threatening event is occurring to themselves or loved ones. Either the police services improve or you will be seeing way more citizens responding and doing what they have to do.
Well then they are just going to have to learn their lesson in PRISON. They need to get punched in the face by a tatted up chollo a couple of times and maybe drop the soap in the shower 🧼. Back down bitch and just let it happen. Let them take it, you can get another one, your rich compared to most people.

And then, they'll take your information, and tell you no one is coming, and to file a police report online. How long does it take for the police report to be approved? A month and a half.

@@hobamasucs My friend used his gun to defend himself, DA declared it justified and filed no charges. However since it was used while a crime was in progress (him being assaulted and robbed), his gun was held as "evidence" for years as the case went through the process. When the thug finally got sentenced and stopped appealing, my friend still couldn't get his gun back for years. He finally contacted one of the state's gun rights group who threaten to sue the PD. They gave it back to him before the first hearing.

The news does know that Oakland Police do not respond to theft calls? They only respond to violent crimes. So if an Oakland resident witnesses a theft and calls 911, the dispatch will say "We don't have time for theft, insurance will cover it." I know from experience.

The new Alameda County DA is probably going to charge the neighbor who shot the thief. Yes in Oakland be a good witness and if you have a firearm for protection never use it for protection. If they do find and arrest the perp the DA is not going to charge them or will make it a misdemeanor and off they go to do it all over again. But it's what most of you voted for.
