- Oakland business owners say police aren't doing enough to investigate burglaries as the city is in midst of a surge of commercial break-ins. Crime data from the Oakland Police Department shows commercial burglaries went up 76% last year.

A homeowner here in Ontario Canada, shot and killed an intruder with a registered handgun. The homeowner was arrested and charged with murder. That’s all I’ve heard so far.

What's the point? The cops can't really do anything. If they arrest people, then get labeled for police brutality or worse. If they arrest someone, then the DA will release them. Instead of targeting criminals, those politicians would target cops to advance their political career.

You aren't alone Oakland shop owners. Businesses here in sacramento get much of the same treatment. This state is a hell hole.

I used to work for a company that was located in a busy near-downtown area, but a few blocks from public housing (the projects). We had a small parking area out of view, enclosed by the surrounding buildings, but entered and exited through one, single lane alley. The lot was so small that about 20 of us had to double and triple park against a wall. We kept nothing in the cars and kept our ashtrays and glove compartments open so no one would break the windows for a quick smash ‘n grab. If the homies decided they wanted to steal a car parked against the wall, they would break into and move the cars parked behind it - just to drive off with their desired prey. The owner of the business finally had enough and installed a security camera two stories up on the wall. A month or two later, we came into work on a Monday to find the camera was stolen. There were just two or three wires hanging out from where the camera was located. We had no idea how the homies got up there unless they brought a giant ladder. The owner eventually installed a massive gate in the alley to try to keep the homies out. I left there in the late 90s, but I heard it became really dangerous to work there. Homies started to come into the business through the front door to try to steal items in broad daylight while the workers milled about. Eventually, they installed a security door where customers had to be buzzed in. If a homie wasn’t buzzed in, he’d bang on the glass like an animal. Front desk workers would call the cops and pray that they would show up to shoo the homie away. When the owner decided to retire, he couldn’t find a buyer because no one wanted to deal with the local bs. Ten years later and the building still stands vacant. Mansions from the great industrialists of the early 1900s used to line this street. Now, it’s a war zone.
Makes you wonder how that decline came about. Same in South Central LA. Shriner's Auditorium was in a nice, middle class or upper middle class neighborhood. Now it looks like hell. No one takes care of their yards, or their homes... or picks up trash, or the dog shit. Each family has to give a crap, and they don't.

We live like this in Texas for years. If you call police that a burglar is in your garage, they just tell you to "avoid confrontation" and hang up. Last year a business owner shot a burglar, when they heard in the phone that its over police didn't even come out. Ambulance picked up the body later.
At least you are allowed to defend yourself. Here in CA, we would be the one locked up for defending ourselves.

I've watched all the videos, all the phone camera stuff from all of those police killings that started this. I'm beginning to wonder if all of this wasn't staged. Think about it, why so many people at that exact spot, with phone cameras on, recording all of this, it started before the police even got there, or started what we now know happened. What if George Soros, Nancy P. were the initiators, needing something to ignite the fires? They find some drug addict, one that has been told he has weeks, months to live, offer him millions to his family and he commits suicide by police officer. Find a burned-out officer, offer him millions to go to jail for the crime, and when they take over, he's quietly released? Makes more sense than what we've been told.
He should put out a sign on the front door "Caution this premises contains work boots and job applications."

I worked for a parking company a few years ago as an auditor in both San Francisco and Oakland. We had three paystations that were broken into in the City Center garage on 14th and Clay Streets. The crook was on camera and knew where to go in the paystations to access the cash box. Close to $2,000 in cash was stolen. Since then, the garage and many other garages decided to go cashless which has been a good thing. However, we called OPD and they told us the same thing. Basically, go online to file a police report. It is ridiculous how OPD operates.

We are all on our own, truly. If I were a business owner in Oakland, I would form a militia with my fellow law-abiding citizens. You no longer have police support, if you haven't figured that out yet.
California laws, like Prop 47 and 57, AB109 and No Bail, along with DA's that refuse to prosecute and judges who give light or no sentences. Couple that with most Law Enforcement Officers fear being prosecuted for or sued for any use of force that may occur, they feel defeated and demoralized. Most Officers feel the public and their Command Staff don't support them and A lot of officers are just trying to keep their heads down and not get into anything. Unless it's "Over the hood or over the radio" they will only do the bare minimum to get to a retirement and get out. the rest are quitting or going somewhere else.

That's part of the problem. Cops are the other part. This looks like police are either doing these burglaries or setting them up. The absence of investigations is a hint. Stop with the cops are scared of being wrongly accused of wrong doings. If they keep their body cams on and up hold the oath they don't have to worry about that. Crime in police departments and on the streets will only be stopped by GOOD police work and honest citizens.

I grew up just ten or so miles south of Oakland, San Leandro. It got so bad, even before this, back to 2010, it wasn't safe to go out at night, as the gangs now ran the cities. I left after caring for a family member, and on their passing, I left California for good.
If things do not change in California, businesses will either move or shut down and there won't be any stores open, as the gangs will start on them. They took over Bayfair mall, unsafe to go there at night. I moved to Ohio, small town, no gangs here, no one will tolerate them. People here, farmers and Ranchers, they also carry a weapon, never know when out on their property a wild animal or when they go into town, they carry large sums of cash for supplies, to protect themselves. No criminal in their right mind will attack anyone, as one out of five people openly carry. Safer here than in a bank.
These criminals are spreading to smaller towns in CA. Smaller towns don’t put up with SJW criminals though so they better be careful.

When my wife was in a serious bicycle accident, the Oakland police did not come to take a report. These reports can be critical if there are lawsuits related to injuries. I went to the accident site myself as she was being loaded into the ambulance and took my own photos to gather evidence. It is a sad state of affairs in Oakland.

Police reports do not mean anything for insurance purposes anymore. I have one from my last car accident, the insurance company for the woman who hit me doesn’t care. They believe her lies because it means they don’t have to pay me, regardless of what the report says, and my only recourse is to sue the driver in small claims court.
OPD is probably short staffed. A lot of cops have been retiring early or just quitting in droves after the George Floyd riots in 2020 and the department has been struggling to recruit. Now cops are putting their priorities to higher crime neighborhoods and violent crimes (shootings, homicides, hostages etc.) in general. If nobody is dying the cops won't show up. Don't be surprised if you are robbed, beaten, or your car windows got smashed and the cops never show up.

My family had multiple stores in the 80’s in NY and we had roll up security doors that covered the entire storefront. I wonder why they don’t have them here. Maybe a zoning law?
They look so bad, but that may have to come this way just to stay in business. Then again, they just rob you during business hours. Not like anyone is going to arrest them. A lot of small mom and pop stores like this probably have guns. Thieves mostly don’t want to raise the bar and get into shootouts or other direct confrontations. It’s much easier to just steal.
There was a homeless person on the VTA bus who refused to leave. Sheriff did not want to drag them out physically in case they get injured and sue. So the bus went out of service until the homeless left the bus on their own accord. All passengers had to wait for the next bus.
It was because LEO didn't want to get injured or get "dirty" from the homeless person.

My neighbor's store was broken into 7 times in the last year alone, so he decided he had enough and purchased a 2-inch thick steel reforced business garage style lowering door, that is impossible to breach. He should know, he has security videos he showed the police where 6 times burglars with chisels, crowbars and huge portable electric grinders were used on his new security door and all attempts failed... leaving him grinning from ear to ear.
He should electrify it as well. Accidentally, of course!
At this point he needs to have pitbulls watch the store overnight

My business in Oakland was broken into and when I called the police, Atleast to get a report for insurance. they said make an online report. I then got a call from the police asking if I still needed assistance… 2 weeks later. They never came, never got a investigation, nothing. I even had evidence that a previous employee had done it. They didn’t care

I called the police twice in Oakland 2 weeks ago to report a theft and they never showed up. They told me to file it online and I wasn’t able to do so.

Oakland PD has had leadership problems and has been on federal probation long before some protesters ever uttered the words defund the police. In fact I’m pretty sure their budget has grown and not shrunk.

Something like this happened in England recently, where the shopkeeper caught a guy robbing his store. He was told to let the guy go. You know what's funny, the police have just put in for 17 per cent pay rise. I have a hard time figuring this one out.

It's a little different here. Oakland police are understaffed even as crime rates go thru the roof. Covid really messed up our police forces here.

Years ago where I used to work, and the end of the day, the cash was removed and the register drawer left wide open, where you could see it looking in the large windows. The owner used to keep a gun in his office. We did end up putting bars up over the windows inside. I remember once someone broke in the side of the building through the wall into the office area. It was a auto repair shop and really nothing much to take up in the front office. The money was removed daily.
The police these days are much lazier. What do they do at this point? Why have them if they don't do anything. They don't even show up. I guess if they end up arresting someone, the D.A's these days just let most of these criminals go free anyway. The whole system is broken.
