Because there are a lot of tourist and people just waiting to give handouts to homeless. If people stop giving money and food to the homeless I'm sure there will be less.
That's the thing no one who's trashing these places never really gets into. The reason these places have so much homelessness is because the rent is so extremely high. Who would have thought endlessly giving to the homeless and refusing to charge criminals would promote more crime and homelessness? Oakland's only solution is to continually increase tax and throw more money at the problem. No one to blame but the voters themselves.
honestly in the late 80's early 90's there were blocks and blocks of streets you couldnt drive down without an armored car and assault weapons....it got cleaned up for a while but now it's back but still nothing like it was back then. recently i accidentally took the wrong exit and found intersections destroyed by "sideshows" (done with cars) rubble and detritus everywhere, entire buildings covered up to the 3rd floor with graffitti, and entire areas filled with homeless campers all just ONE block from upscale condos and highspeed freeways...i cant imagine living in that hell zone. i was literally terrified.
I was born and raised in Oakland in the 50s and 60s. The city was so unsafe that my parents had to keep moving us further and further away. By 1990, it got so bad, my parents, my wife's parents and my wife and I, had to pack up and move 150 miles north.🥴
I lived in Oakland for 15yrs, I sold my house in 07 after the riot that took place when the Raiders lost the super bowl. It was a powder keg then and is even worse today. I had a service route for the largest security company, I saw violence on daily basis. It was a lawless environment, and law enforcement were helpless to do anything about it. That was 17yrs ago, its only gotten worse if you can imagine that. Socialist democratic rule always destroys towns when its voted in, Oakland is just one example of destroyed cities across the nation.
Separately living ! I used to live there in 1975. I used to support MLK Not support his dream. Failed prefer to live in a safe area they call us racism
I'm Australian and flew out of Oakland international over Christmas and I've never seen anything like Oakland. I thought San Fran was a shithole but Oakland takes the cake , it's end of days stuff , dystopian nightware on an industrial scale , homelessness like you wouldn't belive, graffiti, rubbish ,how anyone would shit in one's nest the way the people of Oakland do they must hate themselves to want to live in a community like that.
Have some foresight mate. Some parts of Australia is starting and will become like Oakland, let's see if you can recognise the pattern and connect the dots.
I dint think you actually saw much. Oakland always the same. San Francisco is far from a sht-hole. I can say that mh time in Nashville an Memphis were ruined by crime and I was robbed in both cities. Dies that mean both cities are a mess? Let me tell you, Nashville is drug heaven, bug Memphis is worst than Oakland. I swear uo and down I’m more afraid of Memphis and Tallahassee than Oakland. I go eat in Oakland very often.
I lived in Oakland for several years, but in 2018 I couldn't take living there anymore! I'm a retired police officer from LAPD Los Angeles Police Department, and crime had rapidly increased dramatically in Oakland to the point I stopped going anywhere at night, I tried my best to have someone with me when I went places there even in daylight hours for extra safety. I was pretty much a prisoner in my own house not to mention I had also been a victim of a couple of property crimes in the last two years I lived there! I had my car broken into twice, someone broke into my garage and I had several pieces of mail stolen right from my mailbox which included a couple of retirement checks from the State of California! FINALLY I HAD ENOUGH! Within a 60 day period, I sold my house and moved to the Philippines where I've lived full time since I arrived in July 2018 and I've never been back to the US let alone to Oakland! In the nearly 6 years since moving to the Philippines, I've never ever felt uncomfortable or frightened, and I've not experienced any crime to myself or to my property! Best decision I've ever made in my life moving from Oakland to the Philippines 🇵🇭 ❤ Oakland used to be a nice place to live and for many years I never had any problems until 2014 came along and it just kept getting worse and worse! I was lucky and blessed that I was able to move from there, but unfortunately I know there are many people living there that don't necessarily have the option or ability to leave! 😢😢
@HungNguyen-dt8nl I actually grew up in Santa Clarita back when it was Newhall/Valencia and when I worked at LAPD i was living in the Palmdale/Lancaster area! I only retired to the Philippines bcos my wife and her family are from the Philippines, so we decided to stay in the Philippines where life is much easier and much more affordable. Many of my fellow partners with LAPD did live in Simi Valley during that time but it's been many years since retirement
I lived in the Philippines for five years and would NEVER EVER GO BACK. It is utterly corrupt. It is also hot but that would not be the reason for leaving. It is cheap, but that is NOT a reason to stay there. I do not know where you live but it is a miracle you do not need body guards. Glad your life is swell, you are the first American I know of who thinks it is better than the United States of America.
@568843daw yes there's plenty of corruption here in the Philippines without a doubt! However, no country is perfect and currently there's nothing I need or want that I can't get or have here in the Philippines. I've never ever had a problem with anyone here and certainly I've never thought of needing a bodyguard? At least there's no mass shootings here compared to the US? Maybe bcos I was a police officer that I'm flexible and adaptable bcos it takes a lot of adjustment to live here but at least for me, I've never been happier! I bought a new house, a new car and a new Suzuki GSX-S1000 since I've lived here, compared to the US I would never been able to buy a new house, especially in California where I was born and raised. Yes I'm one of a certain few that love living here in the Philippines especially I can live like a king here vs a near homeless senior in the US. Thank you for your kind words! Take care! BTW, I lived in Metro Manila for my first 18 months and since then, I've been living in Bacolod City on Negros Occidental. God bless
I'm old enough to remember when California was considered the "golden state." That quit being true long ago. Worse still, the state seems to lack the will to make the necessary changes.
Back in the sixties, the state was conservative, and we didn't even lock our doors!!! Now the state has turned completely liberal, and I moved the hell out of there!!! The problem is LIBERALISM!!!
It's getting to a point in Oakland, CA where a junkie can no longer afford a cardboard box and a blue tarp. The good news, however, is they can still crap on the streets for free.
This report is so inaccurate . You could have had Governor Newsome narrate it. He’s really good at spinning something into a toxic fantasy. Enforce the existing laws, give OPD the teeth to do their job, prosecute criminals. Go after the drug dealers., use existing laws to get homeless off the street. Get them clean and sober and then……it’s their choice , live life well or live life in hell.
Just look at the Number, money California spent on "helping" homeless people is more than enough to pay for Rent at Market Rate for every single Homeless person. Fixing these problem is all about lining up certain group's pocket, not fixing the problem at its root.
Lived in Michigan near Detroit and in California (Alameda) across from Oakland and they both have the same issue corruption and bad urban planning. The corruption is obvious and it transcends political party; Rick Snyder/Kwame Kilpatrick and Gavin Newsom/Sheng Thao are good examples. But the urban planning is the real issue, both cities are examples of mass suburbanization instead of a high density urban city. Hundreds of miles of suburbs, are hard to police and lead to dead zones. Meaning there's no one in the city at night, and there's no one in the suburbs during the day. Versus a urban dense city, that has a mixture of residences and businesses, there's always someone there who can call the cops. Both issues combined create the perfect storm.
I worked for a San Francisco based company and would visit the corporate offices (I was east coast based) in the late '90s. Oakland was a place that you didn't visit even then. Transiting it on the freeway was ok, but don't exit.
This is exactly what I experienced. I worked for a SF company, but I reside on the east coast, I accenditally got off on the wrong BART stop and I never felt so unsafe. I am a pretty large white guy, but I was cat-called and threatened for simply walking down the street, back to the BART terminal.
San Francisco just as Bad!!!! I been to Civic Center nothing but Drug Addicts and smell like piss. They closed certain Bart entrances they hang out there also
I am going to visit SF by the end of March. Unfortunately I didn´t know the situation in OaKalnd until I watched this vvideo. My flight is goin to departure from the oakland airport. Any advice or safe route from the SF bay to the oakland Airport? I will be using public transportation

Whoah 😮I lived in Berkeley and Oakland in the mid to late 90s….There were definitely sketchy areas but also areas that were pretty enjoyable. I guess I was lucky that my girlfriend and I were able to avoid problems with crime. Downtown back then at city center was still trying to rebound from the Loma Prieta quake. But there were descent restaurants and jazz clubs at Jack London Square. And the neighborhoods in the hills that burned in 91 were just starting to get rebuilt. I had mostly good times then. Lived near Lake Merritt and walked to work. Sad to hear my former home is not doing well.
There’s a saying “you can’t have anything nice” but in Oakland you literally can’t have shit. They’re breaking into empty cars with no tints. They’re breaking into cars that are internationally left unlocked. It’s so bad. You can’t even walk around here without having to look over your shoulder. Traffic signs and lights don’t mean shit in Oakland either. Bay Area invented sideshows and doing illegal shit in cars like sideshows and races was super popular, but ever since the rest of the country been copying and doing “takeovers” it seems like Oakland gotta 1-up and go above and beyond with vehicle crimes. It’s damn near a death wish to own a car in Oakland

Motorcycles doing donuts around cop cars and not even turning there lights on, People windows being smashed broad daylight. People having guns pulled on them. Drivers driving through red lights and stop signs as if nothing was there. And its only gotten worse, and i dont see how they will ever get better with out major change from top down not bottom up.

ASIANS DONT END UP HOMELESS BC THEY HAVE A FATHER AT HOME & WORK LONG HOURS & DON'T CAUSE CRIME.
I spent a year there in 2022 as my wife was a travel nurse. We looked around the Bay Area for housing & ended up on Alameda Island. It’s connected to Oakland by bridges & a tunnel. It is like night & day . Like crossing the border in Tijuana. When we were there it was virtually homeless & graffiti free. We saw a homeless set up near a post office & they were gone the next day. It was safe we didn’t worry about crime .
Because they forcibly removed the homeless, so they relocated to Oakland & San Francisco. Homeless will be homeless unless we get them mental health & drug treatment, and give them a roof over their heads. They don't just magically disappear because they're evicted from one particular area.

Up here in Calgary, Alberta, Canada we have a bizarre mayor and now we have a huge petition to 'recall' (fire) her. We won't let what happened to Oakland happen here. These elected officials should be put in jail if they cannot run a city and budget properly.
The powerful real estate industry is responsible for much of the exodus from California. Housing in the U.S. used to be considered a 'soft' investment because society considered affordable housing important for a healthy economy & vibrant communities. When, in the 1980s, housing began to be considered as an investment to get rich quick, rents soared & soon thereafter, sales of ordinary soared beyond the reach of most workers. Rather than blame the victims, a spectator sport popular in this nation, it's far more accurate to blame the economic system which essentially destroyed affordable housing in order to create a small class of investor capitalists bent on squeezing the last drop of financial blood for their victims. So the problem with 'ruined' Oakland is the same as found anywhere else in this declining nation: an economic system designed to enrich the few at the expense of the many.

You don’t have to live in Oakland unless they are giving you free money. You don’t have to Trash your environment. You do need to live like people in a civilized society.
Honestly, as someone who has lived in Oakland for almost my entire working adult life - no, it's not "ruined" BUT the root of every other problem in the city is the affordability. Fix that and crime drops, businesses return because residents can afford to spend money and less issues with homelessness and addiction. The cost of living is the #1 problem and it has always been.
The problem at this point is even if they wanted to vote Republican they can’t because there aren’t any left in Oakland. The best they can do is to vote Republican for some statewide office. But, alas they won’t. Take this year’s Senate race. The Dems have Russia Schiff, the dingbat who thinks the minimum wage should be 50 dollars and the woman that beat up her husband. The Repubs have a former ball player and successful agent Steve Garvey. But he will likely lose as the morons in Oakland pick one of the three Dems. So yes, they have no one to blame but themselves.
Oakland got there because of the amoral approach to life by many residents, the lack of moral terpetude by the leadership and politicians and the dissolution of law and order by the state.
I was born and raised in Alameda Co, 10 mins south of Oakland and comparing now to 1990s...there was more options for things to do then, now nothing positive besides maybe a garden...thats about it.
Walmart closed nearly a decade ago. I wouldn't call that recently. Homeless has increased as gentrification has creeped into from San Francisco as tech transplants sought "more affordable" housing alternatives versus living in downtown SF. This raised housing rates & pushed locals farther away when they could no longer afford the increases. Once lock down happened, many transplants went back to where they came from having no real roots here anyway & having the ability to work from home anywhere but housing prices remain elevated and unaffordable. Additionally much of the petty crimes committed, are from outsiders who live in the suburbs but come to downtown Oakland to bip cars and vandalize businesses, then they return to their peaceful neighborhoods leaving destruction and a bad reputation for Oakland in their wake. Oakland has always had some crime but what's going on now is not the norm. The police decidedin the wake of the defendthepolice movement that instead of addressing the issues that lead to crime, they'dbe spiteful and stopping police minor crime altogether. This effectively makes Oaklanda sanctuary for petty criminals to commit crimes. However, new police chief was just named, so that's something. And just a sidenote but a bit of the footage shown was of Frisco while discussing Oakland. Oakland has definitely changed & not all for the better but it's not necessarily as bad as the media make it out to be. I feel completely safe other than worrying about parking my car downtown.
The law is way too lax. It’s not a deterrent. There are penalties for breaking the law to discourage people from doing it. If the penalties don’t do that, then they need to be increased until they do. It’s not cruel or unusual, it’s necessary. That might mean sending people to jail for years for “minor” crimes, but if that’s what it takes then that’s what it takes. You don’t see robberies in countries with extreme penalties like losing a hand for theft.
Getting the culture to accept other cultures ruined it. The culture that built and created it was lost to one that had never risen above tribalism , except as forced.
You want to know what happened to Oakland, Gavin happen, rather than investing in Oakland he stuffed his own pockets, and flip the finger at every body
I worked for the past 30 years in Oakland, so I am able to speak with personal knowledge. I also worked in redevelopment, so I have worked in many of the neighborhoods. The real issue is the loser leadership and tolerance for BS. Just look at the streets, look at the graffiti, disregard for traffic laws, etc. Heck, call the police and they won't show up. Now, look a couple hundred yards across the channel to Alameda. Where's the graffiti, dirt on the streets, crime, and all the rest? You won't see people speeding, running lights or stop signs. Why is that? Alameda has law and order and Oakland does not. The people of Oakland should not re-elect any of their officials. Start over and clean things up. Demand performance out of the department heads. P.S. Walmart left Oakland when they adopted a $15/hour minimum wage. That was the real reason.
That Walmart near the airport left because of rampant crime, thefts, and problems with people who would “hang out” in their parking lot. I remember it. I ALWAYS went to the Walmart in San Leandro, rarely ever the Oakland one.

Best decision I've ever made in my life moving from Oakland to the Philippines 🇵🇭 ❤
Oakland used to be a nice place to live and for many years I never had any problems until 2014 came along and it just kept getting worse and worse! I was lucky and blessed that I was able to move from there, but unfortunately I know there are many people living there that don't necessarily have the option or ability to leave! 😢😢
Most LAPD retired in SIMMI VALLEY or Santa Clarita
@HungNguyen-dt8nl I actually grew up in Santa Clarita back when it was Newhall/Valencia and when I worked at LAPD i was living in the Palmdale/Lancaster area! I only retired to the Philippines bcos my wife and her family are from the Philippines, so we decided to stay in the Philippines where life is much easier and much more affordable. Many of my fellow partners with LAPD did live in Simi Valley during that time but it's been many years since retirement

God bless

Oakland, California is now looks like fallout 4

But we haven't had Capitalism or anything resembling it for more than a century. The Democrats have made housing and everything else completely unaffordable. They are bankrupting the middle class and working class. The Globalist Bankers have engineered TWO (unprecedented) Global Depressions in barely a decade, -one of them a Plandemic where there was I believe, (after thousands of hours of extensive research), no Novel Coronavirus. Yet the Democrat Politicians (as always) fell for it hook, line, and sinker.
the oakland crime is bleeding into san leandor now. Homelessness, drug use, robberies - its terrible. Just 20 years ago you could still walk around without worry
Look at the people in Oakland, that is why it is a dumpster fire.
Black!?
One word. Demorats.
I really don't care about CA & NY and I don't visit there anymore.
No, worse-PROGRESSIVES
The one word, here, is "homies" at 1:50.
Since the 1989 quake, temporarily cutting it off from San Francisco...
Currently, Oakland has 21.6%, as opposed to San Francisco's 5.7%.
... you are retarded @user-jw9lq5ib6g
@user-jw9lq5ib6g
Very funny. That description CLEARLY goes to Biden.
You'd better resign yourself to having another four years of your FAVORITE president, because there are no Democrats up to the task.
I always see the abandoned buldings driving North from Union City/ Fremont on the side of the freeway. Pretty depressing. I always hear stories of people being jacked. My family, my teachers, and myself... with some pretty good camping gear inside the backpack. I guess the blandness and industrial districts of Union City is where I'll stay.
Ummm… Oakland has always been a cesspool, with a few rich pockets in the hills. You just drive through Oakland. Don’t stop.
You sound lame 😂 asf
The question has been answered. It was bad in the 90s. It's hopeless now.
One word answers the question, “How did Oakland get Ruined?” DEMOCRATS.
Great video! Thanks alot
Drugs, permissiveness, single parent families, and the normalization of crime activity. It’s taken decades to get to this and will take longer to dig out.
There's many other issues but what u listed is true. Am Gen X grew up in a great Midwestern town. Divorces were rare. People ate together and talked. No cell phones. And people attended church. We respected teachers and parents too. Corporal punishment was used rarely
Single parent = single mother
love how much of the b roll shows sf when talking about oakland lol
To be fair, stealing in SF is not counted as a crime if under $945 in value is stolen.
That's stupid why will people work as long as they can steal and get away with crimes .
@@ladylove4087 they don't
Want the Crime to cease? Make the Punishment Unacceptable!
To be fair, it is a crime, it's called petty theft. But what does that have to do with the subject of this piece, which is Oakland.
That's correct, but in addition the very same freeloader can do it several times per day and walk away from it
Let's say the said freeloader takes $930 at 9am and goes on to the next target and adds $915 , and continued doing his job another 4 times , that SOB can sell his stolen stuff at 50% off and cash in $3K plus
Because the people who elected their government , received the government they wanted. Free stuff and no police.
WHAT HAPPENED TO OAKLAND? WELL DUH DUH DUH, DEMOCRAT SOCIALIST IS WHAT HAPPENED, A DEMOCRAT SOCIALIST IS ANOTHER TERM FOR A COMMUNIST ,,
i don't think so. commie China is a very secure country that you can even hang out freely after midnight.
I grew up in the 60’s. I Loved California until I did not. Most of California has turned into mostly ghetto areas with small nice areas.
I grew up in Oakland in the 60s as well, Hawthorn Elementary, Hamilton Jr. High, Fremont High, and Merritt Jr. College, the destruction began in the early 70s.
Fresno, Calif is affordable so why is there so much crime there too? reply please
oakland is a reflection of its residents
As is Detroit, Cleveland, Baltimore, etc. etc. etc.
RIGHT!!!!
Oakland is a reflection of DEMOCRAT policies.
So why do people from Oakland keep voting Democrat?
Because Democrats let them do what they want and reward it.
Because 90% of MSM won't talk about liberal-running cities/states
Because they are brainwashed! Just watch MSNBC, CNN, ABC....the View, Jimmy Fallon...etc.
Because they've been trained to think that Republicans are the Devil. It's hard to argue logic with people who only think emotionally.
Blue no matter who, that’s what happened.
5M dollar house, $2 view. Nuff said.
Oakland got there because of the amoral approach to life by many residents, the lack of moral terpetude by the leadership and politicians and the dissolution of law and order by the state.
lol. You’re an idiot of epic proportions
Hmmm... nice work. you completely avoiding naming the group responsible,
but oh! you hinted quite well.
I was born and raised in Alameda Co, 10 mins south of Oakland and comparing now to 1990s...there was more options for things to do then, now nothing positive besides maybe a garden...thats about it.
Glossed over comment of black relocation in the early 60s.
Exactly
Bad Hoods do all that and complain about Grocery stores closing down because of it. They call them food Deserts.
LOL, are you seriously saying that crooks come from the suburbs to loot Oakland? It's the other way around.
Looks like a great vacation destination, we can do a walking tour, eat lunch and then take a shit in the street. Yea kids will love it.
You wont make it to the shitting in the street part of your itinerary
oakland resident from 1966 to 1973… not an easy place to be even then
The law is way too lax.
Blxxx…….
At 1:56 "A large black population moved there".
Yeah. . . that correlates with ALOT of issues. . .
brandon's build back better save democracy is proudly saving America one city at a time.
Once they destroy them first 😂
This is sarcasm I hope😂
@@skytrip5273 You didn't watch brandon when the US left Afghanistan. ILLEGAL LIVES MATTER.
Just like all the other failed Democrat City's, like San Fran SICKO, Chicago, New York. New Jersey. And on and on
Name one city he saved in the past 3 years...
You want to know what happened to Oakland, Gavin happen, rather than investing in
Oakland he stuffed his own pockets, and flip the finger at every body
6:50 i like how none of the numbers he is saying match the numbers on screen🤣😂
I heard that the Walmart on Hegenberger had 6 million shoplifted out of that store.
That Walmart near the airport left because of rampant crime, thefts, and problems with people who would “hang out” in their parking lot. I remember it. I ALWAYS went to the Walmart in San Leandro, rarely ever the Oakland one.
Picture of US that is coming to most of America?
We all know but we can't say as we don't have freedom of speech in this country
