Sometimes the merchants are in on the crime. I found a gas pump had been tampered with at a Shell gas station in my area. I went in to report it to the merchant. They came out and looked at it and said there was nothing wrong with the pump. However, the seal on the pump had been broken and there was a small screw in the pump cover that was protruding. None of the other pumps were like that and before I noticed the problem, I tried to use the pump but it wouldn’t recognize my fuel rewards cards which is what made me look closer at the pump. None of the other pumps were in that condition and the other pump I ended up using recognized my fuel reward card, seal was intact and didn’t appear to had been tampered with. The attitude and dismissiveness of the merchant made very suspicious! Which I conclude to mean that they may be in on some of these crimes!

So even though The Home Depot is a part time gig for me I try to take care of my community by trying to take care of my store.
WAIT !!!!!! Where are these thieves getting the “SKIMMER” ???? Who makes these “SKIMMERS”??? Why aren’t those COMPANIES that make the “SKIMMERS” getting arrested? …..That could put an end to these crimes!!!!!
My thoughts exactly! Where are they getting the skimmers from is my question. You're right about the fact that it could put and end to the crimes if investigators would start with the companies making them.
They are taking genuine parts from credit card readers and repurposing them, making them look legitimate, with software to hold information until they can get ahold of it and transfer it, usually by taking it off a usb or wirelessly. It's not what you're thinking, rather they purposefully reverse engineer the technology to make these. It's no ones crime except the scammers.
I find it funny that the frame it like a bunch of random criminals are going into convenient stores and gas pumps and installing these when 80% of the time it is in the store owner or an employee
One other tip: There's a sticker seal on gas pumps that you can check where the machine is opened. if that sticker is damaged or broken, don't use the pump and notify the gas station attendant.
This is why I use cash pretty much for everything. Some group of criminals from overseas somehow managed to put a skimmer on my BankofOklahoma ATM here in Oklahoma City back around 2018 and they even got my gosh damn pin number! They were able to get about $1500 in Dallas, TX before the bank caught it and called me and I verified that I was not in Dallas so they shut my account down. The bank had to eat the $1500 so it didn't cost me anything but that was pretty damn shocking they were able to do that.
A thief once stole my wallet. Bad news for the thief because I stay broke. $0 on my card. I know he (or she) was mad after trying to make a purchase with my card.
The magnetic strip on credits cards was supposed to be abolished years ago. That is the info that is "skimmed". Skimmers can clone the card with an identical mag strip and use it where the point of sales system accepts a mag strip. Chip readers, and most of those are contactless today, cannot be "skimmed". Most of the world abandoned mag strips, the US keeps postponing the mag strip deadline. Not sure why that is, but it would stop this crap instantly.
Hi Mr. Ciaran Murphy Sir, for us to send you the package in your name, can you please comment here and give us your physical address my friend THANKS Have a great day
It is because of the expense of changing out the legacy readers combined with reconfiguring all the cards to be chip only. A study concluded that the fraud is actually cheaper to pay than to reconfigure the entire systems to prevent it. This is why it will be a slow walk to chip everything - hackers will also be more creative with gaining access to chip data.
I imagine it's the same reason why we do everything: somehow it's helping the wealthy corporations make more money from us. Fixing it would cut profits somehow.
@@grayisgood I am sure the actuaries at Visa and Master Card have figured that the point of sale replacement cost is higher than the cost of skimmed cards. Not in their math is the frustration and lost time of the consumer who has to deal with CC down time and hours on the phone. Happened to me 7 years ago. Since then, we only use our credit cards and learned how to maximize our cash back from it at the same time. All credit cards are paid off either biweekly or monthly so makes the cash back really worth it 👍
Before swiping the card, see if the face pops off. You don't feel them. You grab it and tug it. If it's fake it will pop off but you have to give some effort.
Simple, go only places that use tap-to-pay and keep cards LOCKED until used, then relock. It's fool-proof. A locked card cannot be used ANYWHERE, online, by phone, or in person. Locked is LOCKED. They could even HAVE your card and it would not work.
This is why I stopped using my debit card. My accounts have been hit multiple times. I always use credit cards now so they steal the banks money, not mine.
i think they can combat skimmers by. 1. make the terminal clamshell design so that you have to place the card into the machine similar to the slide roller device used in the 70s and 80s . advantage: you can see a skimmer , maybe even skimmer cant be placed without interfering with clamshell closure. 2. make the terminals much bigger so it can house the mechanism used at some atms where you feed the card in sideways and it is drawn into the reader and the reading is done internally. 3. require terminal makers to inflate the costs of the terminal really high so the criminals cant afford the terminal to practice on. the reason that the fake cell phone tower the stingray costs half a million and sold to police is to prevent criminals from using it to easily jam cell phones and/or learn from it and defeat it.
2:43 Tapping doesn't always work because of the gluing incidents at Chase ATM where their accounts remain open after transactions and have to be manually closed. It leaves others to access the account long after you left.
Also be careful when swiping your card at fast food restaurants and things. I had one guy in the drive thru at Taco Bell try to scan my card with his cellphone.
You're absolutely 100% right! People gotta be careful at the drive-thru nowadays. Unfortunately, sleezy crooks do this everyday. Good thing you're aware, stay safe.
Can they scan even if u use the chip? I don't understand bc he says to use the tap option, which I use whenever available, but he just talks about swiping a card.
Chip is *much* safer than magnetic stripe - use chip if you can. The chip generates a unique code for each transaction, so skimming the chip is not very useful for scammers.
Need to look for attached items above the keypad too. They are putting thin objects that look like the mirrors or look like atm machine surfaces above looking down at the keypads. above that look at your card numbers and watch you type your pin number in from above. They don't have to skim the stripes no more.
I don't even give my debit card information out. It is locked and sealed away in my safe. If I can't use a credit card, I re-evaluate the situation to see if cash would be acceptable. Debit cards are not insured, neither is cash. Credit cards are the safest for consumers hands down. You can get your money back in a snap because since it's debt, it is insured. Something a lot of people dont realize.
In Brooklyn N.Y. Too they also install them in supermarkets as well, two month ago I went to buy some groceries with my EBT Card and the cashier told me I had nothing in my card I had only used it a couple of times I found it strange that I didn’t have anything in it I called the back of my card and it said that someone made a purchase of $217.00 dollars.
So are chips ok to use?? I see a lot of ppl using tap and although I do have that feature in my card I opt to use the chip. Is it safer to tap, chip, or use my phone?

@@janeclayton151 wOw! This is so f**king scary. My sister was in the hospital giving birth and found fraudulent charges on her card. The girl at the bank was the one doing it. They fired her but she just went to another state and continued on.
@@janeclayton151thank goodness for that! Never leave your card with someone else out of view!
So what happened?
We all need to check ourselves at all times. I don’t trust the owners/employees either.
I didn’t know people were still using the swipe feature. I see them everywhere, but I only see customers tapping or using the chip reader.
Not all cards have that feature
SNAP cards have the swipe only and here in Oregon, a single mom has has her benefits stolen TWICE now by skimming.
I work in retail. Most people use tap to pay (like Apple Pay) but there are people who still prefer to insert the chip. Certain cards unfortunately are also swipe or insert only, especially SNAP/EBT.
Always use Apple pay
They need to remove the mag strip. Inserting the card into a reader to read the chip likely gives the reader the information on your mag strip too.
I was at the gas station today and was upset that the app wasn’t working so I had to swipe my card; this is the main reason why I don’t like using my physical card. Before swiping, I checked the card reader. Sad days we’re living in.
Hey at least it’s not the dark ages.
Well, now I’m going to be suspicious of construction workers in pairs! 😂
For real! Like wtf 😳
Usually construction workers have identified company names on their hard hats or vests. SOP for most companies.
And may look like they work and aren’t in clean cut “YMCA” gear. 😂
You can tell those guys are fake. Not even a single dirt or wear and tear on the safety vest
Using the construction vest to commit crimes is also on the rise. Don't trust just anybody wearing a vest, verify they're legitimate.
I wish they would've shown us how to distinguish skimmers rather than explaining briefly.
I don't care if I look rude, I pull on those card readers HARD to see if theres a cover
Lol
Me too. I don’t care!!
What do you mean “pull” on the card reader? Is that a way to tell if someone is scamming? What would I look for?
To see if it comes off..
I have been doing that actually except inside the stores that have employees monitor the area
This is why I still prefer old fashioned cash. 🌟
In some countries, people lose their hands for doing this.
Eks Bocks Should do all countries!
Slow down, Gestapo
These people need to be taught a lesson
@@PoloMoney as long as you don't steal you won't have anything to worry about
A lot of people in this world do.
How about implementing practice for convenience stores utilizing POS machines to do a daily check of the terminals/ devices to detect placed skimming devices.
Why not treat these crimes like real crimes and give them serious jail time….non of this slap on the wrist crap…treat it like robbing the bank…because thats essentially what they are doing
I don't swipe my card ANYWHERE without pulling on the card reader first! I do it in front of people so if something was to get captured ... There are witnesses!!
Hello beautiful can I ask you a question?
Last year we were driving back from Jersey to Florida. We happened to be in Virginia rest stop. I went to go use the vending machine and I pulled on the card reader and the whole entire thing just opened right up I could have had anything I want it for free but I closed it back up.
Smh
Court - "we have you on camera placing the device"
Criminal " Not guilty"
lol
Now THIS... is some good reporting 👍👍👍
Also beware the ATM’s inside hospitals!!! It happened to me.
This is why I check the machines before I use my card, especially outside at the pump.
Lol gas station employees aren’t getting access to skimmers they we’re definitely just being lazy and didn’t want to deal with it lol
Yup someone somehow just got my CC info and used it in Queens while I happened to be at Florida.
They’re also getting better with phone scams. Be careful people!!!
I’m a cashier and am thankful that supermarket checks all the credit card machines every hour.
as someone sais a chip cant be hacked but ebt can linked to anetwork we lost our food money for a month may not reimburse uless law is forced not yet so no chip on ebt nys lost 700k ckients in dollars
all new cards have chips so dont see where they are used just food catds dont only strip so maybe some cards like gas cards dont have chip yes my target card has strip
How do they get the data later? Like is it just transmitting it somewhere or do they have to go back and retrieve it after people have used it
This is why I use cash 95% of the time.
i had my food card skimmed one of many debit credit no it has a chip
credit is ok the skimming isnt at all machimes just check the machine a chip card i donr see how can be reproduced

Those who do this evil, I wish the same happens to them and I believe in karma.
And when it dose I pray their account gets drained every single dollar and every cent that belongs to them
No karma bud. Ppl get away with things everyday without punishment. Justice only exists for those who have the power to enact it.
Even got scammed myself and Miami PD said they probably wouldn’t do anything about it even though they had the home address of the people who committed the fraud.
If you believe in karma then why is the world a mess 😂😂😂 clearly they don't get what they did
Yall delusional
That's Why everytime I go to use my debit card or credit card I always pull on the card reader to make sure it doesn't pop off.
Yep, I whip down my credit card machines at The Home Depot every day. I do this firstly for sanitation reasons for myself and the customers, secondly to make sure the device is running properly.
I've already done my career job as a Graphic Designer and know what it's like to have hard earned cash ripped off. So even though The Home Depot is a part time gig for me I try to take care of my community by trying to take care of my store.

This is so frustrating! I was once at a 7-11 and was stolen $400 from my credit card. It showed in my bank statements 😐
Did u get the money back?
@@scorpiotx3184 it’s not a big company that makes this it’s most likely sold from a dude with a 3-d printer
Did you ever hear of the small countries called China and India?
I have yet to hear of one frickin conviction for this crime!!!!
Get rid of the magnetic strip!
Criminal’s have nothing to fear. The punishment needs to be severe enough to deter criminals.
Ah this ain’t Dracula days.
I find it funny that the frame it like a bunch of random criminals are going into convenient stores and gas pumps and installing these when 80% of the time it is in the store owner or an employee
This feels avoidable. Stores, gas stations, etc. should ask that employees simply check their POS after each interaction.
what about food ebt money stolen from poor and may not reinburse you even though laws now i lost ebt in coltado im in new york
What if it’s employees ?
They need to make people aware that most are placed by the owner
Its hard to put a skimmer over a key Sheild.
One other tip: There's a sticker seal on gas pumps that you can check where the machine is opened. if that sticker is damaged or broken, don't use the pump and notify the gas station attendant.
They said I was crazy for not getting a credit card now look at you you get scammed for going to convenience store
Best way to stop this. Use cash!
Would be great if security was watching the registers more than a teenager stealing lip gloss.
The bank had to eat the $1500 so it didn't cost me anything but that was pretty damn shocking they were able to do that.
this is why i stay away from credit cards
Sorry that happened to you. The only downside to carrying lots of cash is that you may get mugged!
@@우사민-r3c yes that to

The magnetic strip on credits cards was supposed to be abolished years ago. That is the info that is "skimmed". Skimmers can clone the card with an identical mag strip and use it where the point of sales system accepts a mag strip. Chip readers, and most of those are contactless today, cannot be "skimmed". Most of the world abandoned mag strips, the US keeps postponing the mag strip deadline. Not sure why that is, but it would stop this crap instantly.
Hi Mr. Ciaran Murphy Sir,
for us to send you the package in your name, can you please comment here and give us your physical address my friend
THANKS Have a great day
It is because of the expense of changing out the legacy readers combined with reconfiguring all the cards to be chip only.
Until that tips in favor of replacement, we just have to deal with occasional cloned cards.
Not sure why that is, but it would stop this crap instantly. _____Here's why:
Another road paved for designed theft thereby creating another justification for digital currency.
How is this so easy for them to remove this piece off of the machine-crazy you can’t have anything or do anything now a days. May God Bless Us All.
I know people from both sides of the industry. Sometimes the retailers knows about it or is actually in on it. Whenever feasible please use the “tap” system.
Switch to mobile pay or use a virtual debit/credit card like privacy. A lot of mobile payment methods use a one time virtual cc number for that specific purchase. If the signal is captured it cannot be reused. Or just use cash.
This is why I despise companies that don’t accept tap to pay-I’m looking at you KROGER 😑
Lmao
How about build a alarm that will go OFF when the systems are tapered with w/o entiring a code?
Who do these people think they can get away with it when there is a camera literally right in front of them?
Because they can. Fact.
Surprise surprise, an actual useful news story. Maybe I would watch the news more they were about things like this.
That’s why Big banks are about to have digital wallets
“Allegedly” “suspected” while they have them on camera doing it. Pleads “Not Guilty” while showing him do it. Here’s a thought, start sending these scumbags to prison for 20 years and stop giving them probation. It’s almost like the Government wants them out of jail.
Nowadays I never swipe my credit card at any liquor store, gas stations and 7-Elevens. It is just too easy for people to skim your credit card information.
I say everyone should pass this information on to their friends and family also posted on your Facebook page try to make everyone aware ASAP
i'm also going through this as we speak. I have a case with my bank right now. My card got skim and they took $1500 from my account. Never will i use my atm card again, i will be using credit card only .... smh ... never thought it happen to me but it did... smh ..
Where should I grab and tug? Or it doesn't matter where?

Simple, go only places that use tap-to-pay and keep cards LOCKED until used, then relock. It's fool-proof. A locked card cannot be used ANYWHERE, online, by phone, or in person. Locked is LOCKED. They could even HAVE your card and it would not work.
they should make it a mandatory for businesses to upgrade their old pos
Tell that to Walmart and Sam's Club. They still haven't added the tap features.
Sleezy! So this is why I use cash! I love seeing how everything is starting to come full circle.
This is why when your at McDonald’s drive threw you use cash. Don’t hand them your cc.
Cash is the most secure form of payment there is.
How about maybe implementing a mandatory lunch time skimmer check?
Thank you for reporting on this.
Gas stations and convenience stores should check machines daily and Make it part of their responsibility
I wish more stores had the screen tap option its simple and easy
You should never use a credit card to pay for gas in the first place. The price tends to be higher than cash. You're getting robbed either way.
You get points tho.
anyone else notice no mention of using CASH, the easiest way to avoid credit card skimming?
Yes I just did
This is why I stopped using my debit card. My accounts have been hit multiple times. I always use credit cards now so they steal the banks money, not mine.
You get better protection and better perks using a credit card than a debit card.
@thomasdunn-ic9dm that doesn’t even make sense
Thank you for the heads up
Or you could start suing Amazon for selling those devices.
Nice to see the security cam footage of the installs!
i think they can combat skimmers by.
1. make the terminal clamshell design so that you have to place the card into the machine similar to the slide roller device used in the 70s and 80s .
advantage: you can see a skimmer , maybe even skimmer cant be placed without interfering with clamshell closure.
2. make the terminals much bigger so it can house the mechanism used at some atms where you feed the card in sideways and it is drawn into the reader and the reading is done internally.
3. require terminal makers to inflate the costs of the terminal really high so the criminals cant afford the terminal to practice on.
the reason that the fake cell phone tower the stingray costs half a million and sold to police is to prevent criminals from using it to easily jam cell phones and/or learn from it and defeat it.
most cards have chips except the food and ebt cards dont have any non chip gif cards and food catds no chip
4) Throw the f-ing crooks in jail.
2:43 Tapping doesn't always work because of the gluing incidents at Chase ATM where their accounts remain open after transactions and have to be manually closed. It leaves others to access the account long after you left.
Beautiful... their fingerprints are all over them.
Thank you! Thank you for telling us!
Why is it legal to even sell device's such as this?
Can they scan even if u use the chip? I don't understand bc he says to use the tap option, which I use whenever available, but he just talks about swiping a card.
Chip is *much* safer than magnetic stripe - use chip if you can.
The chip generates a unique code for each transaction, so skimming the chip is not very useful for scammers.
It’s happened to me before. So invading…
Need to look for attached items above the keypad too. They are putting thin objects that look like the mirrors or look like atm machine surfaces above looking down at the keypads. above that look at your card numbers and watch you type your pin number in from above. They don't have to skim the stripes no more.
People should be going back to using cash instead.
This is why I pay all my bills online with my debit card, & pay with cash for my spending money

Such a deceitful society this world has become 🥺
Thankfully, there are still a small handful of countries that are not as slimy as this one has become.
Is this an episode of the Flintstones? Who uses magnet strips? I remember them from the 80's and 90's.

So are chips ok to use?? I see a lot of ppl using tap and although I do have that feature in my card I opt to use the chip. Is it safer to tap, chip, or use my phone?
