Super skimmers: The new way criminals are hacking your account, even if you don’t swipe your card

- Criminals are evolving and finding more sophisticated ways to steal your money - even with chip cards. Super skimmers are now being used, and security experts tell Boston 25 News, they’re much harder to detect. But there are things to watch out for to protect your money.

To prevent this type of theft, my accounts are always in the negative.
LoL 😂
Amen!
My main account is not accessible by cards I just transfer money over to the card account when Im ready to buy something.
😂
Yeah fjb did that
When the bank says its rare, you know it happens often.
It was news that low pressure systems don’t cause earthquakes 😂 we just had a big one after a huge lower pressure system sat over us for a few days. They also said that during the mysterious Miami Mall incident, power didn’t go out in the area.
@@alwaysyouramanda not sure what earthquakes and power outages have to do with banks, but cool.
👍 A comment like this goes to show how trust in banks are dwindling. The banks need to step up.
A lot of storeg units are doing this to scamming and ther all involved like a team
In other news, banks are devolving and finding new ways to save $$$ by cutting corners at their customer's risk...
It always amazes me how much effort and work criminals put into stealing money without just getting a job.
For real😂😂😂
because they can make a lot more in a fraction of the time. And the efforts are put mostly to plan and put the scheme into works. Then it's just honey collection for the most part.
Because they’re making more money in a day than the average person makes in a year.. I personally knew a “scammer” and he was making a boat load of money, pretty sure he never got caught either.
Ikr! That's hard work right there, lmao...
That is their job.
This is happening because the criminals are not punished with a ten year minimum sentence on a first offense, and the entities that make the skimmers and shimmers are not prosecuted and punished with at least ten years on a first offense.
I like the way you think
Agreed. Let these POS people go to jail with Bubba for 10 years, word will get out quick.
This is happening because they want to get rid of cash. They could put an end to this.
Banks are at fault KNOWING what thieves do! They will not accept protection responsibility period ever! Facts. You MUST protect yourself any and every way possible. Gain KNOWLEDGE 🤨🤔
It's happening because magnetic strip should have gone away 20-30 years ago. As long as this unsecure garbage is there, there won't be a lack of supply of people who wish to exploit it.
When caught, there should be a minimum 10 year sentence!
Life in prison or worse
When caught, they are permanently offline!
20 years and 50 Saudi lashes
grounded for life
In other countries, they will cut off your hand if you are stealing. This law needs to be in the USA.
What's the point of having a camera on the ATM, if you don't watch it and make sure people aren't doing this?
Instead they have a camera above their head, nice hat. My bank has cameras pointing at the user’s face.
Or put the cameras across from the ATM, too. More angles
If you're gonna have people actively watching tape, you might as well replace all ATMs with actual bank tellers. ATMs save money for the banks. That is the real reason. Having the camera there is more a cover your @$$ implement.
@@LikeafoxowTell me you haven't heard about AI without telling me you haven't heard about AI.
Maybe those aren't really cameras it might be a sensor
The one thing that they forgot to mention is to tell people to shield with the other hand while they enter their pin number. The reason the scammers put cameras is to see your pin number so that when the scammers have collected all these card information, they match it to the recorded PIN number. That's how I was scammed years ago in the UK. So please shield while you are putting in your PIN number.
That is stupid. They don't have to install a camera to catch your pin number. It is a 4 digit code. By hand it takes about 2 hours to brute force it. Using a computer, or other computing device like a smartphone, it takes about 10 seconds. And unless your pin number is 9999 it will take less time. Like, if your pin number is something like 5836, it will take about 5 seconds, maybe 6 seconds. And even if they get locked out after X number of attempts, so what? They'll just move on to the next card. Installing a camera to catch people entering their pin merely increases profits, but is absolutely unnecessary.
I once had my card compromised. I've never used physically used it, in fact, the card that got compromised is the card I use for Amazon purchases. It was just straight up brute forced; the entire thing, the card number, the security number on the back, and my pin. The whole thing. No skimmer necessary. Someone in Texas ended up with it, about a thousand miles away. I asked the fraud department guy on the phone how something like that can happen. He said they can just do that, just like that.
@@danielduncan6806It's obvious neither you nor dude on the phone has a clue how things work.
Yes, i'm surprised it wasn't mentioned. thanks. I don't agree w/the person below, it would take time to figure out someone's # when they just rather stick w/the ones they know
If you enter your pin wrong more than 3 times, many ATMs will keep the card. Also, it is better to focus on using ATMs that are inside a banks if possible.
instead of a camera, isn't it easier to put an identical keyboard on top? so any number entered will be recorded
Banks must be mandatory to check their atms every few hours.
Many people already fall victim within those "few hours". They should check it every few seconds.

@@jb6712 Get a new keyboard they're like $10
🙄
Doesn't matter, they should just pay for it.. it was their device that got compromised, they can get the money back from the thief.
Why in the hell are the banks not checking the atms daily or even random hourly? We should all just class action lawsuit for not protecting our finances ✅️
Amen, but I think these people are doing it at night when the bank is closed and on Sunday. But I totally agree.
@@HarringJess Right, I wouldn't be surprised if that's exactly the case either. Its just frustrating in the year 2024 this is still allowed to even take place. Our taxed earnings should be safeguarded and anti theft measures better kept.
Here's an old school idea💡 basic as well..Why not put a silent alarm to the local P.D. the instant the machine is being illegally tampered like it would only go of if something was purposely broken to access the card reader or foreign objects inserted..Hey why not an obnoxiously loud bull horn to really rattle the worthless bunch empowered to continue to steal from our accounts🤔
The world we live in today the darn thing will malfunction and scare the living daylights out of someone just trying to make a transaction..Seriously, why do we have to keep telling them how they should keep us safe?
Nobody cares about you money
Because banks are insured, only the common folk get impacted, you can see when banks get robbed they shrug and get the money back.
If you have a error and they take funds from your account they fight you for weeks and months over returning it to your account.
Quit using those stupid cards!
The Banks are a 100% to blame, it’s their machine, the accounts are with the banks. They should reimburse all lost funds and allied costs.
Wrong-- ATMs are most largely implemented by independent ATM companies. These are the ones you see in casinos, nightclubs, gas stations, etc.
@@goofballbiscuits3647No correct, it does not matter who the bank subcontracts their machines from, the bank account holder uses a branded bank leased or purchased machine, the user’s first legal recourse is the bank, it’s a tool only.
@@goofballbiscuits3647 Regardless whether bank or 3rd party ATM, if the machine is breached the customer is NOT liable for losses. The bank machine operator is responsible for reimbursing your losses. Yes, it's a hassle, but the customer won't be out any money. The reason why the companies don't check their machines daily/hourly, etc. and have live operators monitoring video feeds from millions of ATMs is due to the rarity of the theft and how much it would cost to prevent all losses.
Such ignorance.
@@jambreakfast4341Really!!! think about it
The two times I was scammed from an online purchase, it was from RUclips ads. One was to the tune of $200! I will never, ever click or buy from a YT ad again if they can't be bothered to check ad links.
Edit: To clarify, I'm talking about the ads that YT interrupts with on videos, NOT the sponsorship ads of an individual channel.
It's an intentional inside job. If you were a shop and had someone inside your shop robbing people before they came in, you would stop them. YT won't because they're getting paid to rob people. Be very careful who you support
@lukesutton4135 Thank you, Luke... I know, I figured that out, too, since both times it was an ad for a legitimate company and product, and the OG ads for those products were used, but the links were BS. @@annehedonia156That's crazy! Which ad was it?
@IM1deadMONEY The one for $200 was for two really beautiful beehives from a company out of Australia, but they're normally about $300-400 each, and I should've known better when they were only $100 each, but I'm an idi0t, lol. I didn't get my money back from the bank because I waited too long to report it, thinking that they were shipping from Australia! Lmao, oh well.
I was a victim of not skimmers or shimmers but my debit card info was compromised. The thieves used my information to try and purchase a plane ticket, something from Walmart in electronics and purchased a phone through T-mobile. The money was reimbursed and now I don't like using the ATM. I prefer to go inside the bank and I haven't been ordering too much online unless it's necessary. 😕😕😕😕😕
ATM should have an internal camera at the slot, anything that's pushed in that isn't a card or isn't removed within an ongoing transaction should disable the machine and alert the bank.
Wow, how long did it take you to figure that out. You would think they would have thought of that first.
@rfitzgerald2004 That is such a simple and easy fix! I think you should figure out a way to get you a job doing this type of work and make yourself millions! Bravo! I am serious, your idea is so brilliant!
@@BrookEBY22 was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this. Machines could use a card chute mate of wire mesh for visibility and have it monitored internally. Hell even something simple like a laser beam detector aligned with where the chip and mag stripe are located, anything that breaks that beam without a valid card being entered could disable the machine.
The machine will already eat your card if you leave it in there too long...make it eat anything else in there too. Make it always clear that entire area between transactions.

Banks probably love this-! Is just means more people are taking out loans-! Yknow why we’re not allowed to print money-? It makes money worth less-! So while you sit on your tiny pile and the government prints up more Willy-nilly, your pile actually loses its value. It’s like hanging on to that 5 cents you earned in 1928 thinking it would still be able to get you an entire wagon of fodder for the horses.. neigh.
This happened to my husband last Friday! He withdrew money at the ATM at grocery store early morning. After that, someone used his card information and made some purchases on the same day. Our bank noticed the suspicious purchases and cleared them up.

Simple fix. Make the slot only large enough for a card, so that if anything goes into the slot, it would prevent an actual credit card from entering the slot.
Or have a device that's actually scanned to make sure it's an actual card, not some piece of shhiiitt metal scraped together.. what are we doing😂here
I’m going back inside the bank or using the drive-thru to get cash when needed. This is just too much!
Imagine what they could do if they put that creativity towards the benefit of mankind instead of their own infernal greed.
That's what I always try to do, but my husband and daughters seem addicted to atms. Plus, you have to !aka sure you LOG OUT after you're done with your transaction, as there is a way to take money out of your account if you don't.
Exactly what I was thinking.
Capitalism is BUILT on greed.
The evil pedo bank owners or the struggling guy showing us how easy it is to get ripped because they keep downgrading card security. TAP / CHIP is the worst cards and easiest to hack.
"infernal greed" you coined it perfectly
Yes the Tap method allows a One time code issue for that transaction ONLY. People in the comments are saying walk in and see a teller for your cash. This is in fact the best method. However, seeing that the device was place inside the machine. I am not a lawyer. But I would say the Bank is responsible for maintaining the machines security.
Tap is no good either, they can read your card through your pocket. Just use only atms that are inside of a bank or store.
RFID blocker sleeves work well in a wallet. One for each card. Test the card sleeve by making a transaction and leave the card in your wallet. Hold the wallet to the device see if it reads it. If no response then your good.
Many banks are now charging a service fee if you see a teller for most transactions. In fact, a few years back, I closed out an account from one such bank when they started charging a service fee for "at counter transactions."
@@SummerSideOfLife I have a wallet that has the RFID blocker built into it - no need for individual sleeves.
And soon there might be no more arms around. And in the future the only way of paying is via DNA scan.

At the end he says try tapping instead of
inserting your card. There are videos on
the 'tapping' scams too. The scammer
fills the card insert with glue, waits for
customers, then tells them to tap instead,
since the atm won't take their card. Then the
scammer sounds helpful as they suggest to
the customer that they tap, so the cust does,
and often forgets to LOG OUT, the scammer
steps up after cust leaves and starts withdrawing
funds from the account.

It is the responsibility of the banks to ensure that their ATM machines are safe and in proper working condition for customers.

I learned this from my daughter, who worked for a credit union. Have a regular checking account that you keep with a low balance, and then a second checking account that isn't attached to the debit card. This limits how much can be stolen from you. You can move between checking accounts without those "too many transactions in a month" fees that moving between a savings account and a checking account cause.

Wait what? Have a second checking account that isn’t attached to a debit card? I didn’t know you could do that.
@@ReptilianXHologramYeah like PNC's virtual wallet for example. It's 2 checking accounts and a savings account
I only get $ by adding it to my grocery bill at the store as change back. That way I don’t use any atm. For large amounts I go inside the bank.
FREE GAME
First of all....stop overdraft privileges from regular checking to keep from paying them stupid fees.
Then get a free checking account that can only be drafted out of by the banking app or from inside the bank. No debit card linked to it so it can't be hacked. When shopping, put what you are spending or about to spend in your regular checking from the free checking account via your banking app. If your card gets hacked they only get the money in your regular checking and not the free checking account. I keep a few dollars in there after each purchase for miscellaneous crap but if you skim me, you only getting 10 - 20 bucks. You can use the free checking account as a savings account. Been doing this for years with NO issues here. If payment is declined, log into your banking app and transfer money into the regular checking from the free checking to finish your purchase. No overdraft fees to deal with, savings you more money. Also don't pay for gas at the pump, go inside to pay. And try not to get gas from just anywhere. That will limit skimming and bad fuel.
The banks need to install doorcams that say, "Hello, you are being recorded live."😡
your way of explaining is so soothing and easy to follow!
If I catch somebody doing this at any ATM they will permanently lose the ability to use their hands. Because they won't have them anymore!👿
NEVER use an ATM that is in an open public area. Go to a bank lobby. Use a bank who will make good if scammed.
I'm not sure about wireless 'tapping' as an alternative. I had a charge captured because my wallet was too close to the sensor while I was getting cash out. When I found out about it later, the coffee shop manager could see what happened and credited me.
The problem is, if it's possible snag charges out of the air without you even knowing, a scammer could do the same thing quietly in the background.
The video says it's safer to tap your card instead of inserting it and I can see how that might work for purchases but what ATMs allow you to tap your card to withdraw money rather than inserting your card?
Most have an option. You can even use the card in your digital wallet.
That is why you need to go into the bank ,see a teller and get your cash. That way the teller keep her job, the bank don’t make so much money and you can relax about not getting defrauded.

My bank allows me to have my account separate from the money in my card, so whenever I'm gonna buy or take money from the atm, I just use the aoo and put the set amount I need and once I use that set amount it goes to zero til I decide to refil it again. It makes me feel safer and sleep better at night.
No, tapping won't help you in some cases. Some atms allow the screen to stay open after giving money, unless you choose to close it yourself when using the tapping feature. That allows someone behind you to use your account.
Maybe just minimize the amount that is accessible on that card, and only transfer what you need to withdraw that day.
Not always. I do drive up for most of my ATMs and caught TWO ppl who were standing at the ATM drive-up as opposed to the one inside right next to the drive-up. I snap their photos and license plate and tell them they're being reported in case they were scamming. I told them how they could have driven up or gone to the ATM right there, this is for DRIVE UP!
Also if you pay for an item and they ask you if you want the receipt, say YES. There is a wealth of info on that receipt, employees and managers steal that info.
It's very easy for employees to re-print the receipt. Just a click of a button.
Additional tip: Cover your hand while inputting your pin number (pretend there’s a camera right to the side of the pin pad) if you must insert your debit/cc cards anywhere
Personally, this is why I always check that the keypad isn't an overlay device and then cover it with my off-hand while inputting my PIN. That way - Even if a skimmer clones my card details - They don't have the PIN to go with it, confining their options to online fraud only. And with certain security measures I take over use of my card online, that attempted fraud would raise an automatic card stop in 99% of cases. 👍
Thanks Boston 25 for posting this! If it's present in the US now it probably won't be too long til this becomes a thing on UK ATMs, too. ⚠
I´ve avoided ATMs like the plague... but if i do need to use it, I always cover my typing hand with my left hand over the right. It became a habit.
I am a Software Engineer and I have always been wondering why banks are not using the finger prints within the debit/cards to validate the actual users? Finger prints are being used to open your mobile phones so why don’t we integrate it with the debit/credit cards?
Because as people age, their fingerprints are less pronounced.
first at all this is sensitive data, that has to be collected, and processed, and very inconvenient to setup, simple 2 factor auth will solve all that mess, everybody has a phone
@@Maksim-lz3ogUnless you’ve been sim swapped.
@@Maksim-lz3ogI don’t have a phone
People are afraid of fingerprints..it could be used to cross reference crimes.🤣
It’s been around about 20 years at least. Even inside the banks I always check ATM I do my transactions. And I never use my own account card anywhere except my bank. Some time I would use my credit card in big stores and never ever in 7-11 or any liquor store
I still buy with a card for online retail and to pay my monthly bills but deal in mostly cash now and never visit an atm. I've been doing that for over fifteen years. Yes, maybe I'm more exposed carrying large amounts of cash on me but it's not the only thing I'm carrying.
This is nothing new. This type of attacks had been happening for decades.
There are no evidence that the chips have been compromised. However the issue is our cards still have Magnetic strips for backward compatibility which is completely unsecured, and that is what is being captured, and exploited.
Ways to protect yourself.
Make sure the Pin Pad doesn't have overlay on the top, and cover your pin pad with your other hand when entering pin code. To go one step forward. you may with the Razer completely destroy the Magnetic stripe, Although this will remove backward compatibility, and at some locations like FedEx you will have problem making purchases.
How are these people getting access to these ATMs? It looks like they’re walking right up to them. There should be an issue with this. Why is the bank not checking their surveillance every night this is on the bank or the ATM holders or whoever they need to check their surveillance every night for suspicious activity at their ATMs… I do not think people should be held accountable when the banks can do something about this check surveillance every day to make sure there’s no suspicious activity going on. How is that so hard
"How are these people getting access to these ATMs? It looks like they’re walking right up to them." That's sort of the entire point of an ATM -- to walk right up to it and withdraw your cash. And as far as banks checking surveillance every day for suspicious activity. . . do you really expect a bank to pay someone to sit at a computer just looking through video footage all day long?
@@matchstickdesignco Yes, they really expect someone to be sitting at the computer and watching the video all day long. They're that dumb.
Atm maxhines give dangerous thoughts because quickness in vechical at a drive thru bankers area it is world wise worse for those without a car, the walkers loose out by the real live possibilities of theft by window. Camera action after the a crine by card is absolutely crazied and seldomly appreciated is only the few unseen and the bankers rights are uploaded pictures after the fact.ĝive it some time whereas this phase of unseen or taught vy tge bank authorized employ to be ones that warn verbally of card failure to state so is within govermental riggts to cease the card actions and therefore still arrestable whereas in the 24 th centurically ahould have a no way in away or form tl be abke to be used within any thieves knowledge. Claims ;
they are so long to be paid out 6:27😮
I seen one guy did that at an ATM in Dallas Texas and I called the police and was told to call 911 on him but in 10 minutes they'll never showed up and the guy wnd up leaving after he make sure he had enough cards hacked
Yeah, was just watching a video the other day about people getting burned with tapping because the bank didnt log them out automatically after the transaction finished. Scammer would glue the mag stripe reader shut, and stand there and inform people they had to tap, then when they left, pull all the cash they could.
Lmao, I like that last advise, "tap your card" but forgot to mention, to log out after your done(which is an unusual routine). If you forget to log out the next person may also get a shopping spree courtesy of your bank account.
How do you log out?
It times out within a minute, I've tried it to see what happens also once you finished a transaction it asks for pin again so the person behind you will have to time it right and know your pin.
Most times though, in order to "log out", you need to take your card with you. Otherwise your card will stay in the machine.
There's a different style of ATM where the machine swallows the card and I believe it would stop this type of hack.
Yes, you'd think it would choke. ha.
This was really educational. Thank you!
When my mom was scammed by a fake call the bank had no interest in an effort To investigate. I did and it was not hard to track them down. She had sold some property in another state and I feel was scammed there to and it was connected . It was.
Wouldn't it be helpful to capture the face of the Perp who's installing the skimmer / shimmer at the ATM?
An 'overhead' camera viewpoint wasn't very useful, as shown in this surveillance video.
A motion-activated camera should record at eye-level and the ATM should refuse to operate, if the face is hidden.
The original 'card-reading device' should be shielded (to prevent the skimmer / shimmer access), until an unique identifying number (SSN or phone #) is entered on the key pad.
AMEN! That's my contention - better camera angles
@@HarringJessThey have more cameras than what is shown.
And this is why if I do need money from my bank or something I actually get out of my car and go inside
me and my friend saw one on a gas station a couple years back by the mountains we where going to put gas and something looked sketchy where you put your card there was tape to so we took it off pulled it and one of those cards came out 😮
You should always press clear after you use your debit and credit cards.
I am super sensitive when using an ATM. I always make sure no one is close by (to either see my pin, or grab my card/cash and run) and have a good look for any cameras or anything unusual. I always cover the keypad with my other hand and make several false key presses just to make sure. I've never been a victim yet; I guess my paranoia and vigilance has paid off!
Certain gangs watch you draw cash from a distance, follow you then.......
There are card tapping frauds as well. The issue with the tapping is the person must make sure to logout before walking away.
I've caught someone by tracking where my card was used, reported it and they still had the audacity to say they can't do anything about it. These banks and authorities want it to happen.
Cardless ATMS where your smartphone gets you access to your account with unique pairing and QR codes. This would definitely help.
After each use, whether i tap or insert my bank card, i go inside the banking app and lock my card
You know an instant text asking did you make this transaction requiring confirmation might not be a bad idea. But I also know that is a tactic for fraud but they usually call after or have you call.
@@f4ll3nzr0 I have that set up. They always flag unusual transacs
Oh, come on I’m pretty sure that there’s somebody behind the scenes at the ATM companies that make these stupid machines and as soon as they come up with new tech to guard against these thieves, whoever is working, there gives the New theft guard information to the thieves. You’re always right in step with the new information.
Unusual activity is when a person standing in front of the atm without inserting debit card within 3 sec, It is unusual. Usually people already have the card in hand. If the theft is working on installing the shimming, it takes time.
There was a movie in 1995, (the net) the plot was that security and software companies were the ones causing all this "issues" to sell their security software, products etc. Makes you wonder
I've heard news about the NFC type of "skimming \ shimming" device that intercepts the NFC signal from a credit \ debit card or cellphone. It was about 10 years ago now.
Capturing NFC info is useless as it’s based on a one time key hash. That’s why you should ALWAYS use taps and contactless for transactions.
@@BlownMacTruck yup but these ludites are scared AF of technology because they don't understand how it works so they feel the need to have paper bills touch their hands. Just look at the comments to see how dumb the average person is. It's no wonder these things are proliferating.
ITS THE BANKS RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP THEIR CUSTOMERS ACCOUNTS SAFE. AND THE BANKS SHOULD BE OBLIGATED TO REFUND ALL MONEY LOSSES FROM ATM SCAMMERS.
The security expert with the huge gold chain looks like a Soprano crew member.
Great information…. Thanks!!
The "sure way of avoiding the shimming trap" is go inside to the teller. Conduct your business in person. No cards. No phones. No passwords. No PINs.
Tapping your card at the ATM like the news station recommended has its own problems with scammers. I don't use ATMs at all but I saw a report that tapping the card, you must tell the machine you have completed your transactions. If a scammer somehow blocks access to the chip by damaging the cards insert point then helpfully convinces a person to tap their card who doesn't know they have to clear it when they finish, it leaves the card open for the scammer to do additional transactions after the owner of the card has left. Shame on the station for not knowing and not reporting this.
If you walk away before you’ve confirmed your transactions are complete, that’s on you for being a moron.
I believe this can detected if bank install detection device or software that alerts the bank when a non bank card is installed & once detected close the card opening of the ATM until it is removed. don't tell me it can't be done with technology so advanced nowadays
If you tap make sure to close the transaction after otherwise more money can be withdrawn from your account until it is either closed out or there’s no money left
There should also be an effort at keeping these from even being made and sold.
