Yes, a couple years ago, I was in Tampa getting fuel for my motorcycle. No problems. 2 months later I get a phone call from my bank saying someone is trying to charge $100 for fuel on my credit card at a gas station coincidence, I think not. Luckily my bank saved my ass.
I once saw on my local news about a gas station owner accused of installing a skimmer. He was a Russian immigrant. He may have turned off the recorder until he installed the skimmer

If you sue them , they would be liable since the theft occurred on their property if you can prove it.... its easy to install cameras at the pumps from overhead or below which makes it harder to disguise your face letting people who that they are being watched

Unless you actually found the card reader on the machine before you put the card in and then you're liable for putting your card in a bogus card reader. My son "pulled" on the credit card pad and the clerk asked him what he was doing, my son said just checking for a card scimmer. Honest straight up answer. I'd rather deal with that than having my bank account wiped out
Thank you, George Santos. He was busted with skimmers, blank credit-cards, credit-card 'burners'. He had about a dozen 'operatives' placing the skimmers. They got caught, some fled the US, some ended up in Jail. George Santos was charged, charges dropped. Business as usual.
It's better to get a gas credit card like Shell and try the Tap to pay sensor 1st maybe. I get the receipt email to me every time the card gets used. You usually don't need to dirty up your card you can just hover it real close. But maybe there's a skimmer for Tap to pay also ? Never use debit.

Probably be about as useful as that "security tape" they use now. They almost never bother to check it. And if they do they just put another piece if tape on, never check for tampering.
Because they don't have to be 'opened' to install a skimmer or a keypad. They're just stuck on to the outside with double-faced tape. The devices transmit all the stolen info wirelessly to someone parked nearby..
If these people who make the scammers and install them would work this hard at a job they would be very successful and probably make a lot of money with no danger of being arrested, sent to jail and being assaulted in jail.
I never pay at the pump for a couple reasons. They put a hold on your bank account of at least $100 even if you only buy $20 in gas. Sometimes the hold can last 24 hours. Gas station blames bank, but my credit union says the gas station sets the hold amount. Skimmers. And more than not there is no paper in the gas pump so you still have to go inside to get a receipt.
Gas station has to set the hold at the amount you might spend because the credit union will not exceed the amount on hold. If it is set at $100, it will stop at $100. If it is set at $20, it will stop at $20, so anyone wanting more would have to start over -- and the bank might not allow a second transaction at the same location.
Don't pay at the pump, go inside n pay $50 or whatever on your card then go n pump it Or give them cash n if want to fill up give them 50 or a 100 or whatever then go back inside to get your change

Ugh, so annoying I think this has happened to me. I have to get a new card again for the second time in 3 months. I have a transaction on my account I do not recognize. I suspect it's from a card reader. The gas station one is the one I use the most.

It goes through both systems. Your card is charged but they now have all your info to use your card anywhere or make new cards using your info. They can and will also sell your info. I was just made aware of a dark web site that has all these card numbers on it and you can buy them no questions asked.
they should just install ezgas option, basically the gas pumps will have a sc anner above each one like the ezpass tolls do and when your car drive’s under it you pump your gas up and it deducts the money from your eazy gas account
And if you break a pump card reader that doesn't have a skimmer on it using your screwdriver you're going to be liable for its repair. And if they have a camera on it and they see you prying on their pump you're liable to get arrested.

This is probably happening at the Royal Farms gas station on RT 113 in Selbyville Delaware ! It use to give an option to bypass the PIN … now it doesn’t give that option and locks the card in for awhile even after you press cancel.
You can buy a SKIM REAPER or HUNTER CAT device that detects a skimmer at pumps, ATMs , etc. Make sure your wallet has an RFID protector. People can steal your information standing next to you

Right, it hides your card information on your Google app which can be hacked. I don't put any financial information in my computer or my phone although I do use some of the apps but I never save my passwords and I usually use biometric logins and double authentication.

Can not believe they didn't mention tap to pay. It's not the same as it was 10 years ago. It works the same as the chip in your card and can't be skimmed. Even better is to use Apple Pay. Got to get used to not using cash because it will go away and there is no way around it.

Unfortunately, that's a lucky moment. Often these days the card reader is inside the pump panel. There's nothing visible or that can be found on the outside. The hackers have their own keys and place their stuff connected to the wiring inside. So in that way, this guy was lucky.
That means that the reader on the pump is broadcasting a signal to activate the chip on the card. A signal that any scammer could intercept and record.
Now you can get robbed twice paying for gas.

If you sue them , they would be liable since the theft occurred on their property if you can prove it.... its easy to install cameras at the pumps from overhead or below which makes it harder to disguise your face letting people who that they are being watched

My son "pulled" on the credit card pad and the clerk asked him what he was doing, my son said just checking for a card scimmer. Honest straight up answer. I'd rather deal with that than having my bank account wiped out

It's better to get a gas credit card like Shell and try the Tap to pay sensor 1st maybe. I get the receipt email to me every time the card gets used. You usually don't need to dirty up your card you can just hover it real close. But maybe there's a skimmer for Tap to pay also ? Never use debit.

Probably be about as useful as that "security tape" they use now. They almost never bother to check it. And if they do they just put another piece if tape on, never check for tampering.

I never pay at the pump for a couple reasons.
They put a hold on your bank account of at least $100 even if you only buy $20 in gas. Sometimes the hold can last 24 hours. Gas station blames bank, but my credit union says the gas station sets the hold amount.
Skimmers.
And more than not there is no paper in the gas pump so you still have to go inside to get a receipt.
Gas station has to set the hold at the amount you might spend because the credit union will not exceed the amount on hold. If it is set at $100, it will stop at $100. If it is set at $20, it will stop at $20, so anyone wanting more would have to start over -- and the bank might not allow a second transaction at the same location.
Don't pay at the pump, go inside n pay $50 or whatever on your card then go n pump it
Or give them cash n if want to fill up give them 50 or a 100 or whatever then go back inside to get your change

People have a few cards so if this happens you can use another one n when you get back home you can get your new card in the mail

they should just install ezgas option, basically the gas pumps will have a sc anner above each one like the ezpass tolls do and when your car drive’s under it you pump your gas up and it deducts the money from your eazy gas account
You can take a flat head screwdriver and try and pry off where you put the card. If it comes off it is a skimmer.
And if you break a pump card reader that doesn't have a skimmer on it using your screwdriver you're going to be liable for its repair. And if they have a camera on it and they see you prying on their pump you're liable to get arrested.

A waitress might carry a pocket skimmer too...had one get me at a steak house in Greenville SC years ago...if they take a long time to come back to the table just cancel the card...better safe than sorry!

Park on the side where the attendant can see you? Do you know who else can park on that side and block the attendant from seeing them attach the skimmer? Guess what they'd use to block the attendant's view. Hint: it has 4 wheels, and likely tinted windows. Fiddling with a pump without having a car next to it would definitely be suspicious.
Also, the proper skimmer is disposable. It will send the data over the airwaves, and it will never be recovered. Being at the scene of the come once is enough.
Use only a pump visible from inside? Try finding an auto diesel pump not on the ends of the pump island.

This is probably happening at the Royal Farms gas station on RT 113 in Selbyville Delaware ! It use to give an option to bypass the PIN … now it doesn’t give that option and locks the card in for awhile even after you press cancel.
There's now a skimming device that slips inside where you insert your card, not OVER. They got smart.

That was the Exxon app. Only for use with Exxon gas stations which also lets you earn rewards

You can buy a SKIM REAPER or HUNTER CAT device that detects a skimmer at pumps, ATMs , etc. Make sure your wallet has an RFID protector. People can steal your information standing next to you

I believe that all convenient stores should check their gas pumps regularly for these devices...most people have,or know someone who has been a victim of these devices..it happened to my brother!

Right, it hides your card information on your Google app which can be hacked. I don't put any financial information in my computer or my phone although I do use some of the apps but I never save my passwords and I usually use biometric logins and double authentication.

Can not believe they didn't mention tap to pay. It's not the same as it was 10 years ago. It works the same as the chip in your card and can't be skimmed. Even better is to use Apple Pay. Got to get used to not using cash because it will go away and there is no way around it.
I wonder if ATMs can be designed that way, since those skimmers are being used there too. That would be great if possible. No more leaving the credit card behind too.

Good idea to generally avoid debit cards. Also, use a RFID blocking credit card holder or wallet.
The cashier is always on their phone or busy with customers.
Unfortunately, that's a lucky moment. Often these days the card reader is inside the pump panel. There's nothing visible or that can be found on the outside. The hackers have their own keys and place their stuff connected to the wiring inside. So in that way, this guy was lucky.

That means that the reader on the pump is broadcasting a signal to activate the chip on the card. A signal that any scammer could intercept and record.
