  • In India, a young woman is kidnapped, and her young male companion beaten within an inch of his life. He is working class Sikh, Surinder Singh; she is his wife, the former Davinder Samra, a Canadian Sikh whom he met when she visited India a year earlier for her cousin's wedding. For both, it was love at first sight. However, Davinder comes from a traditional Sikh family, who made their fortune in Canada. Her parents, who knew nothing of Surinder when Surinder and Davinder eloped, were seeking a suitable husband for her. As the story unfolds leading to the kidnapping/beating and the subsequent investigation by the local police and Crime Investigation Division, the power of money and of Sikh family honor is shown.

I think her husband was a selffish guy who tricked her into marrying him. Would you be cool if your daughter married a homeless guy? Her parents havent been found gulity of the crime yet. I think Jassi Sidhu did not deserve death but she did bring dishonour on her family by secretly getting married to a guy who brought shame on her family. This poor girl sent him money from Canada. He lied about his criminal record...he even drugged jassis family with sleeping pills with the help of her aunt as he claims.. He had the same last name of jassi being from the same clan as jassis mother. Look murder is never right. I think if she married a Canadian guy who had a decent career her family would of accepted it. Marrying a ricksaw poor guy with the same last name was too much for them to take. Getting married in secret when your from a traditional sikh family is so disturbing. He would never be allowed into Canada because of his terriosism ties. So Jassi gives up her Canadian life to live in a ricksaw with him? Most parents would find that unforgiveable.

@@deneshbhaskar Why are you replying to me again when you replied to me a month ago? As you can see, my original comment was written 5 years ago, so I’m not sure which country this happened in. I think India. That being the case, you should know (if you don’t, then allow me to educate you) as well as I do honour killings happen in many countries - including India. In certain families, be they Sikh, Hindu, Druze, Muslim or Christian; if a woman brings so-called ‘dishonour’ on her family, she is murdered. Also, even though the caste system was outlawed a long time ago, many people still abide by said system. Same as dowry; that was also outlawed (if I remember correctly), but it still goes on to this day. He may have been a rickshaw driver … but so freaking what? She didn’t deserve to be murdered.

I was also raised in a strict and conservative household (Armenian). However, my parents never have even thought about forcing me to marry someone I'm not in love with. In other words, it was left up to me to find a suitable partner when I was ready to date. It's so wrong when families force their daughters in arranged marriages and don't allow her to have or make her own choices in life. I believe it's a form of abuse to force your child into marriage and just overall not giving her the option and independence to set her life.

This story is eerily similar to the one of Jaswinder Kaur "Jassi" Sidhu and Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu (nicknamed Mithu). Their love story of how they met in India, then secretly eloped upon her next visit to India for the purpose of planning an arranged marriage for Jassi. Parents found out and arranged for Mithu to be beaten and Jassi to be killed in the name of "honor killing". Modern time Romeo and Juliet story.

UPDATE Sept 8 2017. This morning, the Supreme Court of Canada released a decision allowing Malkit Kaur Sidhu and Surjit Singh Badesha to face murder charges in India.
It's in connection with the 2000 murder of Jaswinder ("Jassi") Kaur Sidhu, who was then 24 years old. She was a Maple Ridge resident who married a Punjabi rickshaw driver, Sukhwinder Singh Sidhu, over the objections of her family.

there is a comment I found online:
Letter from Anita Majumdar in the case of the 'Jassi Honor Killing'
    2 September 2010 at 15:35
My name is Anita Majumdar and I played "Davinder Samra" in Murder Unveiled that aired on CBC on Feb. 6, 2006. Words cannot describe my relief to know that dramatizing Jassi’s circumstances has resurrected an outcry. It frustrates me that Canada has turned its back on Jassi. For obvious reasons, I’m very attached to Jassi and injustice that surrounds her. There is no just reason as to why Canada can’t extradite the family to India. The evidence is there and it has been there for the last 5 (going on 6) years. India changed the plea from 1st Degree Murder to 2nd Degree so to make it easier for Canada to extradite (Canada won’t extradite to a country that will inflict the death penalty on their citizens). Canada has yet to respond. What disgusts me is the arrogance. Jassi’s body was thrown in a ditch and her family didn’t have enough compassion to identify/collect her body. Her mother-in-law had to perform the cremation rites. The family couldn’t even be bothered to act like they didn’t have something to do with this. I recognize that it’s not so cut and dry and that Jassi wasn’t perfect; she abandoned her family, she deceived them and stole from them for the man she loved, but at the end of the day, nothing justifies killing another human being, and especially not when it’s your own child. This is the time for us to exercise our freedom of speech. I encourage each and every one of you to write and express how you feel. There are far too many cases, in this country alone, where innocent young women have had their lives stolen because a family member thought it was their right to do so. Just because you bring a child into the world does not mean you get to take them out.Anita Majumdar, Theatre and film actress

If you fall in love with the man of your choice and suspect your parents will hire a hit man to kill you, be prepared to detach from your family for life and change your identity so they will never find you. If you can't live without your family, accept the man your parents choose for marriage.

In the U.S of course, it's not so obvious, but is concealed by social mobility based on annual income and wealth. With that said, preferential treatment is given to those with a higher social satus than those who are not. Lower social classes are underrepresente d and mistreated in which they are denied resources, privileges, and services based on their status

I imagine many Indian men sneak around flirting with women --- causing daughters to be murdered by parents when the females are caught going against the grain of tradition. So unfair.

Pride goes before a fall...... narrow mindedness , imagined insult ... No one has the right to take a life just because they perceive they have been insulted by two people falling in love and marrying .. The class system is in all cultures yet we are conceived the same way we have the same blood running through our veins we laugh cry the same .. No one has the RIGHT to play God over another persons choice they do not agree with. Live and let live happiness joy and in sorrow we all have the Right to experience this we are our own persons we do not belong to anyone

I just wished that the real story end up this way like the movie but the truth is not . The husband still in jail for life , The reality of India's justice is about money ! if you are poor there is NO justice .It's sad this man still incarcerated for loving someone .Accusation is the best . Honor killings happen so often in middle eastern countries, India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Now the majority of Western people think this is because of their religion but that’s not true. It’s their culture that’s always in favor of the male population. For example long before there was Islam, in middle Eastern countries baby girls were buried alive simply because they didn’t want girls. How can you blame Islam when it didn’t exist yet and Arabs were killing baby girls and did other terrible crimes before Islam came. I don’t understand why Western people can’t see the difference between a religion and culture. When you ask the majority of Muslims what Islam really means they are unable to tell instead he will start telling his own culture which he thinks is Islam when in fact it isn’t.

It's so sad that human beings are not anywhere near civilized enough to let their children be happy with whoever they choose to marry. Just what is this 'honour' which has to be earned by killing people including your own child? Children are not meant to be born into slavery to their parents, to live for them, to be happy on their terms and conditions - irrespective of whether they themselves are happy or miserable, to die for them ..... Wonder what 'traditions' disallow true love while treating marriage like a business proposition

And you know what, I did ask my parents and they have no problem with who I chose to marry (My dad's Sikh and my mum's hindu). Only speak for yourself. It's like you're saying EVERYONE from that religion is the same which is most definetly not the case. You think by leaving the religion made you somehow superior than others? Phew. You're a joke. Sikhism is THE most modern religion of our times btw if you didn't know and does have quite good morals if you actually put time in studying it before leaving it and calling it false . I chose not to follow this religion or any other religion as I don't wanna commit myself to one religion and be labelled for life and don't agree with everything they preach, that doesn't mean I have the right to go around and call a religion garbage because I don't follow it. You really need to calm your tits and stop being so proud. This could've been such a better argument if you didn't turn your ass hole mode on.
