Qandeel Baloch-who was dubbed the Kim Kardashian of Pakistan-was strangled to death in 2016 by her brother Muhammad Waseem. The case was considered the most high-profile "honor killing" of recent years, where women are murdered by male relatives for purportedly bringing "shame" to the reputation of a family.
Baloch first received recognition from the media in 2013, when she auditioned for Pakistan Idol. Her audition became popular and she became an Internet celebrity. She was one of the top 10 most searched-for persons on the internet in Pakistan and was both celebrated and criticized for the content of her videos and posts.
Three months after Qandeel Baloch's death, Pakistan lawmakers responded to the public outcry and passed legislation against the controversial practice-a landmark ruling welcomed by rights activists and lawyers. However, Waseem has been freed by a Pakistan appeals court, three years after he was convicted of killing her for "bringing dishonor" to the family.
In her posts, Qandeel Baloch had spoken of trying to change "the typical orthodox mindset" of people in Pakistan. She faced frequent abuse and death threats but continued to post pictures and videos seen as provocative. Nearly 1,000 Pakistani women are murdered by close relatives each year, in so-called honor killings, for violating conservative norms on love and marriage.

The father and mother kept changing their story when she died. I believe they knew what was happening. And Qandeels mom doesn't seem to be very emotional or upset by her daughters death. Also, her brother was pardoned by the parents and is now a free man.
Also the son lied when he said Qandeel was unconscious when he killed her. She was alive. Her face had so many bruises, her nose had flesh missing and there were cuts on her cheeks forehead. She will have tried to fight back. She was alive till nearly 12 o'clock. Because I was on her page. She was replying to people who were trolling her. Then around 11:45 her comments stopped.
I think within that time her brother may have come into her room.
Police also denied that she was beaten & tortured whereas the beatings could be clearly seen in her death photo.

It is that idea, that these so-called men are entitled to these women's bodies, or as family members, their misogynistic sense of ownership of the female members of their families, is justified, that is at the centre of why this "honor killing" thing exists.

I'm an Indian woman and understand the conservative societies shown in this documentary. Having remained single and now in my 40s, I have grown to realise something else. It's often the younger men who expect women of their age to follow the strictures of a patriarchal society and fulfill their expected roles of marriage, motherhood and serving family as a good wife/mother/daughter-in-law, because the whole system serves these men. Once the men grow older, like Qandeel's father, and they are no longer "competing" with the young women and expect them to be their chattel, their views often grow more progressive and they understand the women's need to be their own person and live their own life. I've seen this change in my own father as he grew older, but unfortunately, society can have a greater say in some women's lives like Qandeel. RIP brave girl

It’s shocking to hear the rate of honour killings. She definitely pushed the boundaries too far in a strict society. The moment she filmed herself with the cleric for publicity put her life at greater risk. It’s a shame she knowingly took such a risk in her environment. It doesn’t mean she deserved to be killed by her brother as the ultimate betrayal. He probably enjoyed her earnings till she was publicly identified.

It's to do with the fact that, poor girl was born in a poor family and then everyone wanted a piece of her, used her and she was abused and used for their own gains. From her family to each and everyone. She did nothing unique or different because drinking, smoking vulgarity, dance and what not is common among elites and rich but the only thing which took her life is her bad luck to be born in poor family. Despite having access to girls (not women) as wives from age 12. Throughout Pakistan men develop inappropriate relationships with boys under the age of puberty. Well said. She acted in a very cheap way. Then she justified it by using "Woman power" Whereas, she was actually promoting vulgarity & nudity on social media. Qandeel herself was abusing the platform she had achieved through fame. She loved to be famous & earn lots of money, unfortunately she paid for it with her life..

I cant understand how a religious traditional group hates their women this much. Without them, life would not exist. It should be the opposite. They should be praised and protected. Men’s egos need to be chopped off.

This attitude to women is all over. It comes in different forms. In the West, (US), men put their shame on a woman for her to carry. They use her as their personalized scapegoat, same attitude at this country. The death of the woman, may not be as instantly as Pakistan or India. It can be slow and coercively punishable to women. The US laws concerning domestic violence are weak and draconian. Braking you wife’s jaw, gives you a charge of harassment, not even a misdemeanor let alone a felony. Men all over the world refuse to carry their own shame and guilt. What better way than to put it on a woman? And if the country stands behind you to do that, you’ll cause the death of her. Women everywhere in one way or another are made to carry men’s shame. And it’s because governments allow it. Men refuse to carry what is theirs.

This concept of "honor killing" is so downright oxymoronic that it's just plain freakin' ridiculous! There is no "honor" in "killing". To give and take life is God's Right, not our's.
This is equivalent to doing "soft-spoken blackmailing. Can't you see the pile of contradiction?

" In much of Pakistan, women can be all but invisible "....what a biased version of portraying an issue that demands so much sensitivity and deep understanding.
Pakistani women's problems are humongous and complex but the ethnocentric/ western prejudice is epic in this presentation. They always show the doomsday kind of a scenario when it comes to Pakistan.

I hate the expression 'honour killing', there is nothing honourable about these murders. The expression should reflect what is occurring, and that is at the very least, 'honour murders'. I have always been a moderate but the murder of Qandeel and the faces of those children who were raped and never found justice should be a shame in any country that so abuses their female population in the name of God or any religion. These murders are not about religion but about male dominance and their determination to keep it that way. Show me any religious book that justifies murder or rape in the name of any God

35:51 What a stark contrast! Qandeel's father belonging to an older and more traditional generation is all up in defence of whatever his daughter was doing ('at least she was providing for the family', as he says) even at the cost of his son's life. Her young brother, on the other hand, gave in readily to social pressure to murder a soft target....made even softer by intoxication.
It's crystal clear that Waseem savagely premeditated and cold-bloodedly executed his murder plan. He was well aware of the SHARIA provisions of pardon by her (and his) parents for the heinous crime ----- he purposely kept them out of the fray by intoxicating them.....; or was it a plea (ploy) fabricated as a result of an afterthought?
BTW, I personally don't accept the story of a chauvinistic young Baloch man serving post-dinner milk to the family (including his 'sinful' sister) and the clever she not getting suspicious.
Now, view Mukhtaran Mai's gang rape in the context of same misplaced sense of honour. The elders of both families readily agreed on dishonouring of their daughter/sister (SANJHI DHEE/BEHN) in public as retribution for MAN's sin/crime who happened to be her real brother. Even this 'honourable' brother of hers showed no remorse for his sister's public dishonour of an extreme nature ........ He rather accepted it as quid pro quo for his own escape to safety and 'lived happily ever after'.
    Wither the 'sacred' honour?

The Brothers & parents who murder their kids, how can you plan & carry out the murder of a child you brought into the world/ a sister you grew up with. The paper who printed her passport are disgusting, they're gonna know what the effect of that is. But selling papers is more important.

Why did her brother not have any guts to face the cleric for inviting his sister to his room? Shame on this cleric! She exposed his true face to the world and she paid big price.. she was providing financial support for her old parents and her family, why did her brothers not question her how she earned the money then? Why they didnt have any issues when she was supporting them ? They used her money and then killed her when they everyone found out that these so called brothers were receiving financial support and felt embarrassed by her actions, just to prove to people her brother commits murder! 😡😡🤬
