@@12thDecember The book, the gift of fear -it was in me at age 12. I fended of a predator who had a butcher knife in 1970. I always listen to my gut. Not just with negative things but with people as well who try to take advantage. Wonderful author. I read his book as an adult like 4x.
The 2 strangers that helped her seemed to care more about her than her own friends. Her friends let her walk home alone, a 30 minute walk, at night/ in the dark, visibly drunk. With friends like those, who needs enemies?
I believe its now safe to say that woman should always have someone with them when they go shopping or renting, or coming home. The world is full of violent men who have fed their hearts and minds on degrading pornography.add to that many have not had very good childhoods, so now their grown men with strong sex drives and no one to reign them in. Disasters waiting to happen. Yes. They happen thousands of times a day. Many ending in murder.

My friends are "ride or die": We never let any of our party, man or woman, go off on their own, especially after drinking.
The problem didn't occur when she was walking home. It occurred when she was safely "locked up" in her residence.

Horrible situation. She can’t go in her apartment because he’s hovering behind her. She can’t get in her car and leave because he’s right there. What kind of security guard follows residents around like that?

Me too! And when he said that He THINKs he saw her with a guy later but didn’t think anything of it. That also sat wrong with me. As a security guard who just dealt with a drunk woman in your complex who couldn’t get into her apartment, you’d know if it was her and I’d think you’d at least ask her if she’s still ok and if she was able to get into her apartment if you saw her again. That little lie right there just didn’t seem right. I knew he was involved from the start.
If someone is murdered in their locked apartment and one of the last people to see her was a building security guard, I think we can safely say he should be suspect number 1.

If only ONE of them would have went home with her, I don't believe this would have happened. At least not that night. This guy is a predator, he would have done something eventually. This was an opportunistic situation.

I once tried to help a woman lying on the street near a glass window. She shouted at me and called the police. She claimed I raped her. Thank god there was a camera who proved my innocence. Never again

@@JayJordanJuly well it can very well be just alcohol, not claiming that it was. I feel that it was wrong of her friends not to stick together to make sure each one is home safe. However even if they had accompanied her in all probability they would've seen her off from the building entrance. The fact that she couldn't remember the code to get in faltered so much gave the security guy an idea to break in.... then again, she did make it home safe and he broke in.
Whatever may be the case...when a rape happens the only person responsible for it is the Rapist. Not the drug not the vulnerability. The rapist.

@@realsusan2003 , I was about 6-7 years old when I asked my maternal grandmother how I could recognise the devil. She said he didn't visit people wearing those horns and the pointed tail. He could come as an kind man/woman, perhaps dressed in a suit and wearing polished shoes. One had to watch his actions to recognise him.

Honestly I don't think she ever forgot her keycode, although she was heavily inebriated I believe she was still aware that he was a creep and kept pretending like she didn't remember it so she wouldn't have to open it in front of him. She made up the lie that the keys/code were in the car in hopes that he would stop hovering over her, you can see by how she keeps her distance from him when walking back up the stairs, instead of engaging in a conversation with him, she thinks he is a creep and just wants him to stop following her.

Wow .. so sad how those 2 good samaritans (the 2 women) were worried for Sashas safety and made it a point to share an Uber with Sasha to ensure she got home safely, then when they arrived to Sashas building and Sasha didn’t have her key, the security guard said “I can’t let anyone into the building without ID or a key” and the 2 women were like “well how can we make sure she’s safe if she can’t get into her apartment.” All along the irony of it was that she was safer not going into that building, but who could have known that the “security guard” who’s supposed to maintain the safety of the residents, would be the person they needed to be worried about… so sad .. what a piece of sh*t

It seemed like a shame also that those 2 strangers showed the level of care & concern for her that one might expect of close friends, but her actual friends didn't. While watching, I kept thinking had she entered the building with a protective friend or been invited to sleep off her intoxication at a friend's place (which I've done myself while visiting friends in Orlando) she may not have been targeted by Steven that night.

@@samo6401 Their talking about normal interactions and it's pretty common for people to target people they know. I watched many of those cases and the police always investigate the closest people to the victims because statics say that most people are victims of people closest to them.
The creepiest part to me is the calm nonchalant demeanor walking out . Like it's not a big deal . Makes me wonder if there are any other victims... if this is his first time he seemed pretty clear minded to clean up and walk out on camera like he has no anxiety or stress about what just happened . During the police investigation if admitted to accidentally hitting his sister best friend in the head with a shovel. He was accused of sexual assault but plead down to reckless assault. He then moved to New Hampshire. This happened when he was a teenager.
I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't. Plenty of dudes with no criminal background have violent fantasies, and when an opportunity presents itself they take it. He's probably creeped on girls before though.

Our job is to keep people safe. Not use prison or death to punish people. Many of which have been found innocent after years. Keep dangerous people out of society, simple. Punishment is secondary. Agreed. I was a free bird in my late 20s. I partied a lot. NONE of my friends allowed me to walk home alone. They made sure they sat with me. ESPECIALLY MY GUY FRIENDS. They would DROP me off or they wouldn’t allow me drive.

She was at home already and she was dropped there by the women, the same way her friends would've dropped her. So even if they had dropped her, he still would've killed her because she was already at home when he broke in.

I live in France and I work in a research institute, some time I don't get home until midnight but never ever felt unsafe although it is not my country.
I am originally from Lebanon, and we people would never let women go outside alone at night without a man. He has to be her father, brother, or husband. Still if a woman did, she would find the stranger males in the street acting as her guards. That's for going outside, while for living alone, it is not an option too.

@@Anti-ikhraël This reminds me of when I was a teenager, up until I was about 20. I would sneak out of my house at night (after I turned 18 it wasn’t really sneaking out, but more like slipping away) usually just to walk around or run to the store just a minute away. I live in a holler with few houses, so it’s really peaceful at night. I don’t believe I was ever in danger here, but MANY of those nights I wandered down toward the main road, especially if I was going to the store. Without a single worry, usually getting stoned while I walk. Usually I was going to meet up and hang around with my bf at the time, who was way too old for me, so I never thought I had much of a reason to be afraid. Especially considering all my neighbors had capable men in the homes and “all I’d have to do is yell” is what I’d tell myself. There’s also times my friend and I would drive back in the mountains, down by the rivers, and just set outside in the dark, alone fishing and getting stoned or just walking around bored. All the times that something bad could’ve happened and no one would’ve even known where to begin to look for us, it gives me anxiety just to think about it. You couldn’t pay me to take those same risks today.

In my country, the sexual attacks and robberies/burglaries are so rare that when it happens it makes national headlines, people are shocked and we talk about it for months. Women here are also afraid to walk home alone at night, but the attacks are rare. I don’t know what’s happening to US. It is a very weird thing that’s going on there.

A few weeks ago my girlfriend was going to look at a room to rent and asked me to go with her. As soon as we got there it was clear the 2 men inside were…weird, they didn’t talk and looked upset to see me there too, we were in there no more than 2 minutes before I said we were leaving. God knows what could’ve happened if she was alone.

@@milobar100 do you have a buddy check system??? I’m married but have 3 friends who now are widowed or divorced. We keep tabs on each other. Yes when they are back home they call or text to say they are home safe. It’s just the right thing to do. I’m married and was home alone painting. Stupid me left my phone in another room. Fell backwards off a ladder. I was not in good shape. Fortunately I was able to move but what if I couldn’t and laid there for days. It’s little stuff that can make all the difference.
It wouldn’t have mattered in this case. It was the security guard to the building so even if she had a buddy he would have eventually broken into that apartment and committed the crime he committed.
The scariest thing is that this man was waiting for someone to be vulnerable to doing harm. It could have been anyone in this apartment and he view his opportunity with Sasha.
He’s so creepy, following a drunk young woman up the stairs over and over. It looks like she’s actually running from him at certain points. I wonder what she went through, at what time she took her last breaths. What she said, what she thought. What a disgusting man, to hurt the people he was paid to protect. Horrible situation. I think of all the times I’ve been drunk and have been preyed on. Stay safe out there ladies!! Never go home drunk and alone if you can help it.

my professor told us in class today that his sister was one of the women who helped Sasha get to her apartment. he didn’t give us any details but as a true crime fan i found this case pretty quickly

Many years ago I had a female cousin living alone and someone came into the apartment at 2 am…thank God her fiancé had stayed over that night (6’7 and 240) he jumped up and charged at the guy who ran off. The cops were called and found out it was the head maintenance guy who when arrested said he was just wanting to check on her because she lived alone. I truly feel sorry for the family…I hope the other prisoners give him their version of justice on a daily basis for the rest of the his life.

I believe if she had thought she was in danger, she wouldn't have just continued to walk the empty halls with the guy. When I saw her run up the stairs I knew she felt uncomfortable. But when I saw him run up right behind her I got an eerie feeling I just knew he was the killer.
I run up stairs like that as well. In my case it's been to escape a violent mother that spent many moments trying to end my life till I was 41 then left her behind, in the interests of self preservation.

As someone who's worked security many years, I'm appalled and disturbed. During the process of getting your guard certification, a background check is ran on you. This means this man, who had no prior criminal record, decided out of nowhere to rape and MURDER this young lady just for sport! Mind blowing. God rest her soul.
I have a feeling that this was not his first murder. He most likely had killed or attempted to kill another girl perhaps. As you can tell he had not perfected this ability to get away with murder because he left his fingerprints and other clues in the apartment. He also let himself be seen on the camera inside the building taking out two trash bags which came from her apartment. So he definitely was not a pro at this but probably had done something like this before or something close to it

And I do believe that she presented the opportunity. There is a tendency: especially in places like Florida for women to ignore personal safety and to attract attention they don’t want. California has a similar problem.
Most sexual predators are never caught or even accused. They attack and disappear without ever being suspected.
As a guard; I hope it’s a valuable lesson to help you watch your colleagues. Remember what happened here and report strange people you work with. If people keep records of odd behaviour this kind of thing will reduce significantly .

Often buildings don’t even have a live feed and those videos are only used for reference after a crime has occurred sadly. The fact that they extended their sympathies to the killer’s parents speaks volumes about their character. And they’re right-when a loved one is murdered, the grief affects so many people, including the community at large. Still, it was lovely of them to say so.

Never let your guard down. Even with a person in uniform. Be careful when drinking and always have a buddy system. Make sure you have someone to text or call when you’re safely home. I pray for peace for Sasha’s family. 😢

What I don’t under is he broke in to her home , the fact that she was intoxicated and her friends let her go home is irrelevant. She made it home around 3 but he broke in around 5-6 so that leads me to believe she was “safe” in her home and he came and broke in.

I agree. it upset me that her friends let her walk home alone intoxicated, but even if they hadn't, fact remains that she was safely home, He broke in. A mere Google search and the lock was broken.
Also, I guess the fact that she reached the building by 1.45 but couldn't get in the house till 2.30 because she had no key and couldn't remember the code... The security guard followed her all throughout... Pretending to make sure she is okay, but really just observing the vulnerability, the lock system and everything... He bloody waited almost 3 hrs before he broke in. He cleaned the apartment and took out the trash after murdering her.

While I agree with the commenters stating that women shouldn't be walking home alone after having drinks, this story really had nothing to do with that. This woman was raped and murdered after making it home safe to her own bed. This is so beyond sickening. If you live in an apartment or condominium building like this, get yourself one of those door stops you put under the door knob when you come in. Better yet, have someone install a chain or slide lock. You can take it off when you move and you'll feel a lot more secure. I've also lived in an apartment with security and maintenance people who could just walk into your place. God bless her family.

But see that's the problem. Women should be able to go out and enjoy themselves like men the same age as her do all the time. So sad!!! The girls helped her and thought she was safe when Security Guard was there. How awful!!! Sasha was so beautiful, vibrant, and her parents are wonderful!!! I cannot imagine the loss...
Her death was avoidable. The lock company knew there was flaws in the system and didn't fix it. She seemed like such a beautiful person, with a bright future that was taken from her.

Such an amazing act of grace for Sasha’s parents to acknowledge the pain of the killer’s parents in the courtroom and so admirable of them to go into victim advocacy after their loss… it is such an incredible expression of their love for their daughter and I hope they find solace in that benevolent act.

I know it was that dang security guard as soon as she made it safely to her apartment and “somehow” still ended up murdered in her resident. He was so worried about not letting anyone in without a key (which he should be) but yet barely remembered this so called guy he saw with her. SMH. May she Rest In Peace.

I'm an Indian woman living in India, so your words reminded me of this decades old case here, before I was born, where a security guard Dhananjoy Chatterjee was harassing and stalking and making lewd remarks, gestures at a 15 year old schoolgirl, Hetal Parekh, for several weeks /months. She even complained to her parents who then approached the housing society secretary to take action against the perpetrator.
His early violations of voyeuristic, predatory behavior against Hetal were not taken seriously enough by ANYBODY, the matter should have been reported to the police.
Her family couldn't /didn't do enough to protect her, neither did anyone else,
the security guard was re-instated despite complaints,
matters of harassment, stalking, intimidation of girls and women that finally amount to serious bodily injury and death are not taken seriously in India.
One day upon returning from school as she was alone at home, her family due to return home in the evening, the harasser BROKE IN, FORCED OPEN THE DOOR, GOT THE GIRL TO DO IT UNDER SOME PRETEXT, AND BRUTALLY RAPED AND MURDERED THE CHILD.
He was the first convict to be given the death penalty in 20th century India.
Aside from what we already know as feminists about sexual violence being systemic and endemic and promoted by an entire complicit legal and cultural system, I also just want to share with other girls and women that EVEN WHEN AT HOME (call me paranoid if you will), I ALWAYS KEEP AN EXIT STRATEGY IN MIND, FROM THE INDOORS OF MY HOUSE OR BEDROOM THAT SHOULD MAKE MY ESCAPE FROM HOME /BEDROOM EASY IN CASE I NEED IT.

The apartment complex is absolutely at fault since other residents complained about the security guard.
And with an electronic lock, always use another source of lock like a deadbolt!!! That goes for a hotel room, too.
I agree. My apartment just switched to electric locks and I still use my deadbolt. I don’t play around with that. NO ONE comes in while I’m there alone not maintenance, not anyone.

As a woman, if you live alone in an apartment get a door chain lock and use it whenever you’re at home daytime or nighttime. The guy obviously saw that she was drunk and a woman therefore an easy target. But even if she wasn’t drunk he could have hacked into her home when she was sleeping so the door chain lock 🔐 is very important. And if you live alone, don’t open the door for any worker unless you know in advance they’re coming etc…

It's even more sad when you consider that "security" was the perpetrator. Imagine how everyone with security guards felt after this story. Pretty insane and tragic. It wasn't even her fault. She was supposed to be safe.

All predators need to see is that the people around their prey are lazy/dumb/or just let people get away with criminal behavior and they feel emboldened. Getting drunk may make it easier for them but people who want to attack you can even do it in broad daylight if they've assessed correctly that the people around you will just watch out of interest, blame & trash talk the victim them move on, not caring once to find out what's actually going on.

Very creepy. You'd assume you're safe being inside the building of your apartment, with a security guard behind you. Poor baby.
Absolutely. And she did nothing wrong at all. I can tell you, however, I'm a guy and a trained fighter, and I still always am aware of who is behind me, am hyper-vigilant if there aren't many people around or I'm in a parking station. You don't have to be tense all the time. I've just developed it into a natural habit. If you have the edge you can run. Or at least defend yourself better. Also, attackers usually look for easy marks. If you are looking around, they don't like that (you can scream before they get to you). Do anything that makes you look prepared or more trouble than you're worth. I also suggest carrying 40 bucks or so in your pocket so you can throw it on the ground and run. And carry pepper spray or equivalent if you can get your hands on it. Take care.
This case is so depressing. Rest in peace to Sasha, she seemed like a really good person. Such a terrible way to die. I hope the best for everyone who was close to her.
As a mom this makes me want to drive around my town on the weekends sober just to make sure women like Sasha get home safe. Although she made it home safe it was a predator noone could have seen comming . I'm so sorry Sasha and Sasha's family rip beautiful girl ❤️
