  • A powerful film showing the true plight of victims forced into marriage. With unprecedented access to the Manchester Police Force, this documentary investigates the biggest cases of forced marriage in the UK. In June 2014 it became illegal for someone to force a person to get married, the problem is how difficult this is to police to track and investigate these cases.

lol I laughed at your comment.
Just to clarify as someone experienced by dispatch: Police is already underway.
They type more info for later investigation and try to keep the caller on the phone in case things happens.
In the end the called had already dispatched - the second such call comes in so does the address.
That is why the police never are dispatched AFTER the call - they are on their way lol but your comment was funny

    • @zagrizena
      @zagrizena Месяц назад +1

Arranged marriage, however unusual in our culture, is not immoral in itself. As long as both parties participate voluntarily, are given a chance to "meet their match" and potentially refuse the union, it's not illegal.
Problems start, when marriages are arranged without consent, through duplicity or sheer force. And especially, when young people are forced to travel abroad to get married there under a different law, which might severely limit their rights within the marriage and their options to leave.

I do feel they need better sensitivity training in dealing with citizens. However, I have watched plenty of videos where the police in the UK handled suspects rough and disrespectful. It doesn't really make sense to compare street cops handling gang violence, drug crimes etc. and officers investigating complicated domestic situations. It's pretty much oranges to apples.

This also happened to me I am not from UK I am from Pakistan .Past year my father(who always tormented me and treated me as a liability) forced me (basically I was physically abused, beaten up )I had no choice but to obey his order although its legally a crime and this marriage is invalid in islam but he is a Muslim of convience .I got married with a heavy heart but his choice my ex husband was also very abusive and had immoral affairs .I prayed to Allah and he gave me strength to walk away and escape from that abusive marriage and I am now divorced and trying to make my life better.I am just 22 and went through the trauma . This is a big problem in Pakistan every other marriage is either emotionally and physically forced upon young generation by elders mostly fathers and sadly this regressive mentality British Pakistanis take with them into liberal societies .

I had a friend who had an arranged marriage since he was 4 and she was 3. He said that growing up being told this will be your wife was weird. Every time they would meat and hang out, they both felt like they had to get along because they had to spend all there lives together. They never really liked each other, but they didn't hate each other. To them that was enough. When he left home the marriage was called off. He never dated any other girl, he said it'd feel like he was cheating. So he was kind of lost when it came to dating, he hadn't even thought of it before.

Also, the British built much of the Infrastructure in India where there was NONE . Highways , Railroads etc. SUre much of the Lanour used was Indian, but the British used plenty of their own resources .
Tell me . The British turned the reins over to India in 1947 , yet after 70 years of self rule , India still remains an Imoverished drveloping Nation. Look at Germany and Japan . They were devesated and lay in ruins after WW2, and yet surpassed India by the Early 60s. India has a much larger advantage than a Germany. Geoghraphically , and by Size .
I was born in India , but raised in the West, and I can tell you that it is the Indian mindset that has prevented India from becoming a First World Developed Nation with a Robyst Economy. Ramapnt Corruption and Fraud , lack of Empathy or compassion is the Indian mindset .

My life was ruined; I was 17 in 1994 when they pretended to take me on a holiday to Pakistan; once there they took away my passport and said to me "you ain't returning until you marry this thing and get her pregnant" . I was in a remote village without money or means of contact. The police ignored me there. I was used as a bridge by my parents and dad's sister to help her daughter to climb in the UK over my happiness. Can you put someone else's happiness over your sons happiness. If I could, I would love for her British citizenship to be revoked and see her returned to Pakistan and banned from coming to the UK. I hate her with passion.

As someone with a lot of Muslim friends, there were many girls I knew that would tell me about how their parents would threaten them with forced marriages if they didn't do well in school or were hanging out with boys. My friend Nasima was really quiet and secluded. She was part of my circle of friends and wore the most religious clothing out of my Muslim friends. She attended my high school for three years before she just disappeared. None of my friends knew where she wentand she never spoke about her home life so I never expected this to happen. I still wonder today whether she was forced into marriage or if she just moved. These documentaries about forced marriages have really made me reflect on what happened back then and I'm only seeing now just how radically different western and eastern cultures are. I hope the girls in the documentary stay safe and I hope the same for Nasima.

One young woman was badly mistreated by her in-laws and husband and had to flee from them without letting us know. I was her boss. She left me a message and I totally understood. Later, she contacted me and I was so glad to see she had a happy and much better life. Right here in the US. And 2 boys who worked for me had arranged marriages. I doubt they worked well, as they grew up watching their dad physically and emotionally abuse their mom. Both mom and dad worked for us, and I wish I could have beat him senseless. I disagree on it his or the woman fault on what gender is the baby. No one can control what nature prepares for us. The kid is ether a boy or a girl. No one whows what child they get or the world would be a perfect place and i know the world isnt perfect dut to wars and natural disater that comes out way. So when it comes to blaming on what kind of child they have it not really a good idea. If you want blam then blame it on the nature of life. I am a girl but i could have been a boy, no one know how they were born beside out of the spern and ovum put together to make a human being. Just like you or the victum or the parents. Check out those who wish to be girls when they are boys or those who wish to be boys when they are girls. Gender rolls can determen how we are born nor does wishing for a certian gender determan what baby comes out of the womb.

Not even our parent control if we are a boy or a girl. Just look at it in both perspective. If it was my child i wouldnt know if it was a girl or a boy. This reminds me of when I was in highschool. There was a girl in my science class that was from the middle east.
She migrated with her family years beforehand. We had a new male student who had only been in the states for about three months.
One day he stood up in the middle of class and pointed at the girl yelling at her in his native language. We were all wind eyed and confused. Then he threw a rolled up paper at her and yelled "COVER YOURSELF! YOU SHAME!" My teacher briskly walked over to him and smacked him with her teaching binder. Yelling back at him "You're not at home! She can have her hair like that if she wants. Sit down and shut up before I make you!" Apparently she spoke the language. XD Coolest teacher I've ever had.

That's so sad that there was not one word of commemorance on his end for making that decision despite being alone. I know because I also had to leave my family like that for similar reasons. Appalling that a man's and other family members' sense of honour is totally dependent on their daughters' and sisters' submission to their wills, so they can be raped by strangers. And that that "honour" is above all natural protection of these girls and young women; better to threaten, abuse and even murder their children rather than let them be free to decide for themselves and "shame" the family. There is nothing honourable whatsoever in this mindset. This is evil abuse. Sick.

With me it was the other way around. I’m a British Bangladeshi female. My cousin who was living in the U.K. illegally, (my dads nephew) wanted me to marry him so that he can come to the U.K. and live a better life.
His entire family in Bangladesh had threatened my parents, saying that if I don’t marry him, they will do voodoo (black magic), on my parents and on me. They use to blackmail my parents because they wanted me to marry their son so he can get a British passport.
My parents DID NOT want me marrying him at all. They are against cousin marriage.
Anyways, he was living illegally in the U.K. for years. The fact that he was sleeping in our living room, that was dangerous as well as I’m a young woman and don’t have a lock on my bedroom door.
When I was 17, he knew that I wouldn’t marry him. After college, we bumped into each other in the train station.
We just went for a walk until he forcefully touched me. I didn’t tell anybody. He was illegal and my parents didn’t want him to be deported.
After a week, I just told my parents what he did. When my mom confronted him, he started crying and denied it.
A few weeks later, him and his friends moved to Spain. They hid behind a lorry to cross the border.
He’s now living in Spain with other guys and has a better life there.
My family had to spend upto £8,000 to get him settled with his visa etc. Some of the money was the child benefit that my parents received.
This makes me more angry, the fact that he decided to touch me up because he knew I wouldn’t marry him and that my parents spent all that money on him because he’s “family”, really annoys me.

I don't understand why as parents you would move half way across the world for a better life for you and your family... but retain your backward mindset and what's worse, drill backward beliefs such as forced marriage into your children's heads too. I understand why this shit goes on back home in Pakistan for example. You're surrounded by your family, you live in the same unit and are physically bound by your culture. It doesn't make it anymore okay but it makes it easier to comprehend. However the whole point of coming to the UK is to move forward, give your children, the future generation, a chance at education and success. It's beyond me why you would pull them back into the god damn dark ages and chain them there? It's appalling, cruel and what's worse is that these people, they think that what they're doing makes them better Muslims. It shouldn't come as a surprise that forced marriage is sinful in Islam and in actual fact, is illegitimate. Any sexual activity that occurs during the 'marriage' is seen as fornication. So instead of strengthening your faith lol you've actually bought yourself a ticket to hell. Rightly so.

@@cupcakegirl5762 It hurts my heart to hear anyone has to suffer. Especially when it comes to marriage which should be a time for love not violence or death.

I am amazed with this lvl of support... I live in the UK and didn't even know that it was taken so seriously by the police! I wish they would make it a reality tv show not to exploit these young women, but so that it would become more common knowledge and reach the women who need help.

An abuser will always deny, deny, deny. "I won't hit my daughter, I will hit my wife and sons".. hmm.. would have questioned that from the get go. He laughs about what the daughter accuses him of. He's guilty. I lived a similar life.

I came from a cult-like Christian community. I was able to escape, but had a relationship with a Hindu man and we had a daughter. He wanted an abortion and was happy to pay for it. I had a good childhood and didn’t face violence, but the pressure brought to bear based on “what the community will say” was horrendous. These 2 things help me understand and have much compassion for my fellow sisters from Asia. This is an issue in all walks of life but my heart lies with my sisters in these Asian communities due to the risk of violence and honor related killings/violence. I wish I could help. How can I help...?
