Announcer flubs common student names at Thomas Jefferson U. graduation

- An announcer repeatedly mispronounced students' names at the graduation ceremony for Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. The school later apologized, blaming the error on phonetic spellings that were on the speaker's cards. abc7.com/post/thomas-jefferso...
Took 10 minutes to replace her? Should have been 10 seconds. How embarrassing
This was a Key and Peele skit! Mr Garvey would be proud 😅
This comment has me rolling. 💯 that's what this is 😂
They should have sent her to Mr. O-Shag-Henessy's office after that. 😁😁😁

No it wasn't. That was actually clever. This was stupid and racist.
She can't pronounce "Thomas" yet she attends THOMAS Jefferson University?
There’s a theory out there that she was protest pronouncing.

It has their name spelled normally at the top of the card, and under that has the phonetic spelling. Come on. How do you go minutes on end without even looking at names on the top of all of the cards?! Maybe she was drunk or on drugs. Nobody can be that oblivious!
I love how they got another person to read 10 minutes in. How did that conversation go? "Sorry, you're too stupid for this job, let somebody else do it."
Sometimes, blunt & honest is best.
How did the replacement presenter do? If they had no problem, it must have been the first presenter that screwed up. I wonder how they got the job?

One of the grads posted the cards that they hand to the announcer as they walk up. It shows their name on top with phonetic pronunciation in the middle. Anyone with a brain in their head would look first at the name, and if it's difficult to pronounce, then and only then would they look at the phonetics. Unfortunately this is perfectly indicative of how most college administrators operate (coming from someone who used to work full time at a college). They have one-track minds, with no thought behind what comes out of their mouths. As a matter of fact, I'm surprised she didn't retort to Thomas "No! It says it right here, TAH-MOO-MAY!"... and the idiots standing next to her didn't say a word even though it was obvious she was doing it wrong. = The grads deserved better.
I’ve dealt with administration that seem sedated to me lol but ya would would think Thomas would be correct since the college is Thomas university 🤣
Watch the Key and Peele skit Substitute Teacher
Yeah I recently needed my ID card replacing in the last month and a half of the academic year. I was supposed to get it replaced at the beginning of the year but it still worked so I didn't bother until IT decided to purge all the old cards right in the middle of exams....
..I go to the administration office and the first thing the lady says is that I can't get a new card because there's only a month left and I should have got one earlier (completely ignoring the fact that had it been lost/broken, they would issue a new one). One extremely frustrating hour later involving two trips to the IT department and other admin offices, someone finally tells the admin person that the only fix is to give me a new card.

Apparently knowing the name of your employer is a bar too high 😂
@@harveywilliams7013 Unfortunately things like that happen a lot where the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. It's because all the departments treat themselves as separate entities and refuse to collaborate with each other. The ones who actually suffer are the students. Sorry you had to go through that.
It's like that Key and Peele skit where the substitute pronounces all the kids names wrong "A-A-Ron!"

I dont, they will have this story to tell forever. Most commencement ceremonies go completely forgotten
How do you mispronounce something that is PHONETICALLY spelled?! And repeatedly at that! The entire point of a phonetic spelling is for correct pronunciation.
Because it’s not spelling “phonetically”, but using phonetic symbols. For instance, how would you phonetically the last name “Camp”? You could probably get many different variations. For instance, the phonetic symbols for “Michael” are “ˈmaɪkəl”. People don’t really know “-ai”. Is it like in air? That would be Merkel. The university was dumb to do this with someone who wasn’t familiar with phonetic symbols
One of the students posted the cards they were using and it had both their name and how it was phonetically spelled underneath it so I don’t understand how she messed up this much

They've showed the cards; while it had a phonetic spelling they also had the names written out normally as well. If you watch the full footage of this you can even hear another faculty member say "just read the regular names on the cards"

@@ratrat9241 No she wasn't, the cards had the names on them.
I remember for my graduation they asked us for the phonetic spelling our names. Meaning they wanted us to write out how our name sounds for the speaker. I’m wondering there were some sort of illegible or nonsensical typos on the phonetic spellings of those names?
Ya maybe or maybe she was only provided the phonetics and not the full names together. Ideally having the names written above the phonetic pronunciation would be best to ensure you aren’t adding weird syllables or something
Clearly she didn't look it over.

How could this be an 'accident'? Even if the names were written phonetically, they weren't right. Presenter should have figured it out after the first couple of names. I think this was intentional (presenter did it on purpose, someone picked a presenter who can't read, someone purposely wrote the names wrong..?).
Thomas wasn’t having any of it lol
What’s sad is this person most likely teaches and the students probably can’t understand what she says. My daughter graduated from Mississippi Sate with a dual degree in Biochemistry and Mathematics. she had a chemistry professor who when asked repeatedly a question he finally said goo goo it. She filmed this interaction if the students can’t understand you the can not learn.

She was combining their first and part of their last names together. That's why it sounds so weird. Crazy
During my graduation, we had two speakers to do the name calling. While one was on the mic, the next graduate tells the other speaker how to pronounce our name correctly. That way they don’t butcher our names when it’s their turn to speak on the mic.
This was 100% intentional.

DAMN, LADY SLIPPED THROUGH KINDERGARTEN ABC.
Someone has to have pranked the announcer... right? It's one thing to mispronounce some syllables, and another to not know where the first name ends and the middle name begins.
This is embarrassing. I recently graduated earlier this month, and I am so thankful that we had competent announcers. At my university, we have quite a few internation students ranging from India, Japan, China, South America, etc. Because of this, there are quite a few names that would prove difficult to read and pronounce, and yet our announcers did a phenomenal job in correctly reading the phonetic spellings. This speaker had basic, common names to read, and yet somehow butchered them. They should have made sure to get someone who was competent to read the names.
Well, now that I know that the card the lady was reading from had both the regular spelling and phonetic spelling of the grads’ names, there really was no reason for her to have messed that up completely. That was extremely stupid.
Holy F##! Those poor students. Keeping a straight smiling face while accepting a piece of paper (probably useless) adding insult to injury. College now... Absolutely Absolutely
I don’t think a nursing degree is “useless”.
I'm surprised she didn't scream "Son of a Bitch" after getting some of the pronunciation wrong.
She likely would have mispronounced it as "Sunny Beach"
For our high school graduation, we just whispered in the persons ear of how we like our names pronounced. It worked flawlessly. But did that college not rehearse with that lady? Someone dropped the ball or the lady was just not all there.
These people work years for their papers, and they have someone that clearly isn't proficient in English, butchering their names. Who made that decision? It's disrespectful.
When I tell you I died watching this for the first time on a news segment, I am bsfr. I literally could not BREATH I was laughing so hard.
That is effing sad fire that person!! And they supposedly went to college??
I hope the people graduating can read. The presenter cannot read and someone has never explained this to her. A surprising number of supposedly educated adults cannot read and write.

All is forgivable if English was not her first language. But that doesn't seem to be the case. She clearly has an East Coast accent. If English is her language THEN WHY would a faculty member need "phonetic" pronunciations of common American names in the first place???? This HAS to be some sort of joke.
Maybe she watched that Kay and Peele skit and wanted to be funny. She pronounced Brotowski perfectly but can't pronounce Thomas? C'mon .
