He's absolutely correct. I graduated from college with a 4.0 GPA, and with all the accolades you could possibly receive. Yet at the end of it, I felt tremendously empty. The struggle is real for overachievers. I sacrificed so many relationships and life experiences to get there. I ended up completely changing the direction I intended as my future career, and instead focused on family and personal growth . I ended up getting married just three years later and having four wonderful children over a ten year span. I decided to always prioritize my family (which a lot of my extended family thought was completely nuts) and not run the rat race for $$ and prestige. I ultimately became a freelance writer and a missionary. I have never looked back, although my parents have always subtly reminded me that I am a disappointment.

Although earning not as much as others, I am happy and enjoying simple things in life. Carreer and scholastical achivements are great for our Ego but not for our soul. And wisdom is not taught in schools,it's a lesson from experiences the life itself has given you and made you . @@liseernie agreed, I didn't realize that Jesus Christ was my true hero and the role model I needed in my life until I was 30... and I grew up in the Church... it actually wasn't until I went back to school 2 years ago at 30 and took a History class in college that I realized that I needed to look to Christ and model my life after him... in my studies I learned that even the Roman Government couldn't find dirt on him to spread, and fabricating dirt on him was so unbelievable because he was that perfect... when I realized this in a History class, I realized just how perfect Jesus was and how I needed to look to him as a role model rather than some sports athlete or public figure... this young man figured this out in Highschool and because of that he will avoid a lot of self-inflicted pain that I didn't avoid, and his inspired millions.. it's no coincidence that so many God-fearing people with strong relationships with Christ accomplish spectacular feats and declare their love of Christ.

It felt almost as if I betrayed my values and myself for this accomplishment and I'm having such a hard time to make my family and friends understand what I am feeling and that it is not a bad thing but rather a moment of clarity and sincerity I never felt before. Valedictorian means you have reached the highest level of academic achievement out of all the students in your class, so either you are clueless about what the title you received actually means or more likely you are a liar and never were a valedictorian. Never in a million years could I achieve a tenth of what this guy has, but I can somewhat relate because I was someone who was expected to do very well by my family. After about a year and a half of community college with no goal whatsoever in mind, I decided to stop lying to myself and just stopped going, and instead pursued my dream of playing in a band. What followed was the greatest 7 years of my life. What was a huge disappointment to my family was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me. Those days are over now and I’m back to a meaningless, depressing existence. For any young people watching this video, don’t let ANYONE decide your future for you. Do what your gut is telling you, regardless of anyone else’s opinion. Whatever social or financial status you gain from pursuing the career you’re “supposed” to pursue will never, and I mean NEVER fill the gaping void of regret left by giving up on your dreams. It will eat away at your soul every time you close your eyes to go to sleep.

Honestly, this is what happened during my elementary school. As a valedictorian in my elementary school, I felt... empty. It felt great. I was ecstatic when they called my name. I was shaking. I was nervous. But after I got to the stage, everything went away. Life didn't have any "happily ever after," and that experience of nothingness reminded me that. I woke up the next day with no goal in mind. I was having school breaks. I was playing video games. But I felt like something was missing. I spent the next 6 years with little to no accomplishments, I feel like I've been circling around aimlessly. Another goal's done, then what? Have another goal, but what comes after? It all just proves my endless sacrifices for obsession with grades and academic achievements. I've lost my identity. My mental health has at many times hit the lowest points in my life.

The concept of the 'rat race' is what plagues this world. But I would suggest to look inwards, think what makes you feel excited, and if you can't, try new things and find what fills you with life, not caring for societal norms, because until what point is success worth it? Don't live life wandering aimlessly, try to find what it is that excites you.

@@WxddlesHimself I don’t know what your experience with religion is. I don’t know if you happened to met someone who claimed to be religious but was just a terrible person or if you simply base your opinion off of random stuff you see on the internet. But let me tell you that in general religious people (or at least Christians and people who follow religions similar to Christianity since I can’t speak for all religions) are people who strive to a good person and help make the wold around them and the lives of others better. Of course there are bad ones but that should hardly be generalized to all of us. With a clear head and open mind you will likely find that most of the bad things about religious people aren’t even true
