I remember our valedictorian at high school in 1970 who achieved full colours for academics in the 10th grade already, and in the final year ended with 8 distinctions when one need only do 6 subjects. She went on to university and committed suicide after two months on campus. To this day, no one could fathom the reason why. Maybe this young man had the answer she was looking for.
wow 😮
wow
That’s horrible. 😢
That took a turn
We can't know why she did it, but in general too much success untempered by the occasional failure makes one too fragile. She entered a much more competitive environment, when she started college.
That’s why he’s the top of class. He thinks differently.
@Superslav26 Wrong, there are a lot of elements involved besides thinking differently. I don't know inherited wealth for example a lot of rich people in general have inherited wealth. Place of birth, if your parents were smart opportunity etc etc etc all attribute to your success, the only thing I find there is a reason why people succeed is ability to take advantage of opportunities given to you. Everyone thinks differently that's why there are so many different professionals in the world. You can be a math genius but be a failure when it comes to poetry or changing your tires.
@Superslav26 well my point refers to why people think the way they think. Social class, and a million of other things contribute to the success rates. A lot of times these constructs are almost seemly beyond an individual's own control.

Words of wisdom. Thank you.
He's absolutely correct. I graduated from college with a 4.0 GPA, and with all the accolades you could possibly receive. Yet at the end of it, I felt tremendously empty. The struggle is real for overachievers. I sacrificed so many relationships and life experiences to get there. I ended up completely changing the direction I intended as my future career, and instead focused on family and personal growth . I ended up getting married just three years later and having four wonderful children over a ten year span. I decided to always prioritize my family (which a lot of my extended family thought was completely nuts) and not run the rat race for $$ and prestige. I ultimately became a freelance writer and a missionary. I have never looked back, although my parents have always subtly reminded me that I am a disappointment.
Do you what is best for you. I am an excellent student too but just earlier in my carrer I realized that this is not what I want. Although earning not as much as others, I am happy and enjoying simple things in life. Carreer and scholastical achivements are great for our Ego but not for our soul. And wisdom is not taught in schools,it's a lesson from experiences the life itself has given you and made you . It's more personal and much more humane and from that it makes you the best person you could ever be. Now, I have two teens I told them just choose whatever they like to achieve and just be happy.
The ending is too real. Parents want you to do what makes you happy as long as they are happy 😊
Your parents probably believed the path of overachieving was the path for you. To be honest, I think you did the right thing. You should give yourself a pat on the back. Choices like these aren’t easy. But hey, you did it. So proud of ya.

Sacrifice of family time and quality of life for standard of living is timeless and well known, just not to kids still living at home.
Hi.
@@junodonatus4906 That's right all the *adults* learn this lesson.
But what about the children, teenagers that sacrifice their time to make friends who are clueless about society, have no idea how to interact with others just because for the better grades in hopes that they can get scholarship. Only to realise in later life that their time sacrificed during those days never mattered. Only to realise that the scholarship could be achieved even if they hadn't sacrificed their social life, just through the general steady progression and a bit of time investment near the end. Only to realise that the sacrifice he made was rather weighing him down.
Worse when you don't get scholarship, you have no social life, no idea how to deal with society, awkward nerd sitting lonely.
That's why, just because everyone learn in later life doesn't mean you have to keep it hidden. Isn't it better to break the cycle so that people are aware and the general life can be better?

@@liamhenson3020 Your lack of understanding for a "valedictorian" is comical. The comment I replied to says you only regret making Valedictorian your primary goal in life, and yet look at the effort required to receive the title, your name isn't taken out of a hat, you do have to make it your primary goal. Well he is an actor
Thank you so much for your brilliant and honest thoughts. Just 4 days ago, I graduated being among the top 5 of my class and instead of celebrating, I was completely down because of the price I had to pay for this and the sacrifices I've made. It felt almost as if I betrayed my values and myself for this accomplishment and I'm having such a hard time to make my family and friends understand what I am feeling and that it is not a bad thing but rather a moment of clarity and sincerity I never felt before. So thank you again, your speech gave me hope!
Same here, had I heard this speech two years ago, I would not have committed the same mistake he is saying. Yet I would also not have experienced the lesson. The wise man is not the one who avoids every hurdle and challenge, but he who after falling down, reevaluates his situation, gets back up and learns from his mistakes.
When I felt that feeling of betrayal, I literally started sobbing in front of my friends. It happens to the best of us, stay strong L.
Looking forward to his book entitled “the 16th second”

@Jake Donovan what got didled
@Jake Donovan you don’t have to be religious to follow Jesus. He himself wasn’t religious. Life teaches you for sure, but once you have god in your life you can have a deeper understanding of things. The spiritual world is more real than the materialistic one, from there we started to exist and for a very short period of time. So believe you me ... God’s words can bring you a deeper understanding of relationships and attitudes. I love you brother, Stay with Jesus! ❤️

@@guioaca7 wasn't forced into any religions growing up and formed opinions about them as an adult 👍
That's cool. As someone living in a religious country, everyone was basically Christian and kids grew up to be one. Not that we were forced but it's so tightly ingrained to our culture that you're almost missing out on everything if you weren't in that religion. I grew up to be a curious kid and naturally had a lot of questions in life, and the answers of the adults just saying "Leave it up to God" (I can't translate the phrase properly but I can assure it doesn't sound as irresponsible as that) didn't really satisfy me. So eventually I became atheist, but currently in hiding, which is sad because people don't take it too well here.
Just a thought: I liked the overall message of the speech, but since he included that part, I can't share it with my friends.
Also, isn't it kind of hypocritical to say "don't aim for money, career, etc at the expense of relationships" only to includethe religious part as the goal instead?

But the source of your sense of accomplishment should never be external.
Paula Gonzalez anybody can make a friend (granted you aren’t autistic). Not much of an achievement.
His point was that being a valedictorian wasn’t really an accomplishment, and relationships like one with Jesus matter eternally because it is only by his blood that he can wipe away your sins btw, no one else, he said make a relationship with Jesus because it’s eternal not a mere waste of 15 seconds that he had to grind for

After about a year and a half of community college with no goal whatsoever in mind, I decided to stop lying to myself and just stopped going, and instead pursued my dream of playing in a band. What followed was the greatest 7 years of my life. What was a huge disappointment to my family was the greatest thing that has ever happened to me.
