The name was right above the pronunciation, so it makes no sense why the speaker would get it wrong.
I don't think that was literally the cards they had at graduation. Im pretty sure that wasn't the style of phonetics used either, it was probably IPA which looks like ɪˈlɪzəbəθ. (That's Elizabeth, which she also butchered).

The university almost certainly would have had it as a list rather than individual cards as well. But the thing which makes me pretty sure she got IPA pronounciations like the above is that her attempts matched pretty closely what someone unfamiliar with them would guess like saying 'I-Li-zabayo' when trying to say Elizabeth.

So I graduated from this college 6 years ago. We had to indicate how our name was pronounced on the forms to graduate. Plus, there's many graduations for each separate college at Jefferson, like business, etc. This wasn't new, and no other speaker has messed up badly enough to make the news. She needs to stop blaming other people

The excuses don't make sense at all.
1. Even if these were not proper given names (let alone many of them being common, including the name of the university), it's the norm to look at the top of the sheet first, and they were bolded for crying out loud.
2. The speaker still butchered the phonetic pronunciations.

This CANNOT be the reason for this! The normal spelling of the name is RIGHT THERE at the top of each card right above the phonetic spelling. Why in the name of god would you keep reading the phonetic spellings when it was completely obvious that you couldn't read them?! WHY!!??? They are plainly lying right to our faces.
?? The card on the show isn't literally what she was shown. I think it wasn't the same phonetic style either, it was probably done in IPA where Thomas is written as ˈtɑ.məs/. , and Elizabeth which she screwed up constantly is ɪˈlɪzəbəθ .

@@waynebollman poor planning and/or miscommunication? It could be she was a stand in for someone else who preferred to have the names given in proper IPA because its completely unambiguous in how the names are meant to be pronounced, assuming someone knows how to read it.
Its possible she requested the phonetic list of names, expecting ver-jin-yaa but got given vɚˈd͡ʒɪn.jə instead and hadn't checked the list before starting.
I'm certain she got the IPA because she said 'Zabayo' when trying to say Elizabeth. You can see how someone got that from ɪˈlɪzəbəθ. Because what is the alternative explanation here? She is illiterate? She was having a stroke? She was intentionally mocking the students?
@@jacobbellamy7640 she was mispronouncing the names on purpose, this happens literally all of the time to people of colour and so she saw her time to repay the favour. This was done out of protest but obviously the school would never admit to that, even assuming they know the truth about the situation. She could have easily lied and gave the phonetics arguement.
Although I do think you're onto something, it's just highly unlikely she wouldn't have seen the list beforehand or had some other visual queue for the names.

If it was non-IPA phonetics with the persons name as normally written then the next most likely explanation is going to be it being a deer in headlights moment where messing up a couple of times resulted in mounting panic and additional mess ups which prevented her from even noticing the names in their normal form also being listed. Like that Miss South Carolina clip from the mid 2000s.

The phonetic spellings were written correctly. The speaker simply couldn’t read words phonetically. SMH
I thank Sarah for showing how the card was presented, with the real name at the top- otherwise the school and announcer would have gotten away with the implication that there were only phonetic spellings on it. And we can see that the announcer was also mispronouncing the phonetics. Also, people like Tamron keep trying to explain why they think it happened- why aren't school officials explaining? (Also, Tamron exaggerating the mispronunciation to try to make it seem reasonable is not helping- the ONLY part that would make sense to not get right is the Vuhr).

I think we need to go back and take a look at how the speaker pronounces the names of the black graduates. This should give us a look as to whether it was intentional or not.
No no no no no. I read names off of the SAME cards for my University. You just also use your critical thinking skills to get it right! We also read at a much faster cadence, have less time to think about it, and barely make mistakes. It is a big deal for the graduates' names to be read correctly. It is their moment!

Having the correct spelling of their names above the phonetic spelling should have made her realize that she was mispronouncing them! I heard her apology and it was evident that she should have been able to read the names of the students since she graduated from college herself. Shame on her and the university for not being prepared beforehand by rehearsing the names and correcting any mispronunciations! It was an upsetting and possibly humiliating experience for the students whose names she slaughtered. UNBELIEVABLE!!!
I don't think the card shown on the show is what they had at graduation and is just a mockup. If the names were right there she would have had them pointed out to her pretty quickly. I also think the phonetics she got was probably done in IPA, so instead of vir-jin-yah, she got vɚˈd͡ʒɪn.jə. I can't say for sure obviously, but it seems like a far more likely explanation than her being illiterate or doing it to mock the students graduating.

I could understand the name caller stumbling over a name with unusual spelling (many Indian surnames are long and the reader would need to double-check before saying it) but most of the names called out were pretty straightforward. Messing up the first name of someone with the same forename as the person the university is named after is totally inexcusable.
