      Callie, I understand. I'm Brazilian and whenever I went abroad, people kept asking me about the Amazon rainforest. I had to explain to them that Brazil is a HUGE country with a lot of different climates and landscapes (even occasional snow in the nontropical South), that most of the population lives several thousand miles from the Amazon, that to most Brazilians the Amazon feels as exotic and distant as it is to foreigners, that most Brazilians have never seen the Amazon rainforest up close and probably never will, and that asking most Brazilians about the Amazon is like asking a New Yorker about the Grand Canyon.

    I'm actually a bit surprised that Juneau is "only" on the 58th degree when I live on the 59th here in Norway, and that's pretty far south. It's always like that, I look at USA and see Alaska and think it's oh so far north, but compared to my country it really isn't. But having the gulfstream run along our coast sure makes for a different climate.

    • @MrEeeaddict

      It's far north considering they have freaking LA and Florida in the same country smh

    • @nmpls
      @nmpls 4 года назад +4

      Not that it applies to Juneau, but just having an ocean is a huge help. When I lived in Minneapolis, at about 45, I had friends in Bodo (67) and points north, and it was consistently colder in Minneapolis in the winter. Like the daily mean in Minneapolis is -9C and in Bodo, -1. (Juneau is -2) And Minneapolis is warm for Minnesota.

      Just remember Juneau is consider part of South-East Alaska :) While our north cape only beats Norway's by a tiny amount (point barrow is 71.38 degrees north where Nordkapp is 71.16) you are definitely right that the gulfstream does Norway a lot of favors. Having grown up in both places, Alaska is generally cooler and colder at similar latitudes. Swimming in the ocean is a no-go year round, ice keeps the north coast inaccessible for the half the year, etc.

    Flying in Alaska is some of my very favorite. I’ve had the lucky chance to fly with Everts Air Cargo on their C-46, Dc-9 and MD-80 freighters to such places as Bethel, King Salmon and Anaktuvak Pass. I tried flying on a Dc-6 but unfortunately we had engine problems and had to do a gate return. Other favorite memories include jumpseating a C-130 with Lynden Air Cargo and flying on a B737-200 with NAC to Barrow.
