Scotty, my man, I don't know how you do it but every time I need to fix something on my car and don't know how, you always have the answers haha. I recently decided to stop wasting money on parts I don't need at dealerships and mechanics and do it myself. And some how you always have the video I need. Thank you so much. I wish I had you in my neighborhood haha
Not really, you have to pay for cameras quite a lot because they charge you with a big screen. Since you have a big screen you have a gps and all kinds of media. Since you have a lot of media you get better speakers. Overall you pay A LOT for it, not worth it.
these are made in China from old stock cell phone cams and lcds. amazing how it's $20. but the labor is what really costs in time or money to get it looking good.
One drawback with the mirror is that in bright light, the image is over powered by the reflection from the back window. The easiest solution to this is to flick the little knob under your old mirror that is a sort of dimmer, or just tilt the mirror and put it back again!
i might get this just so I don't run over my cats. I always check under the freaking car to make sure they are not around as I am backing up. Two of them are very old and suicidal and I don't want to be the one to take the two lives they got left.
xart23x they are old, over 10 years old so they just fall asleep under the wheels, and sometimes I have to grab em by the tail and pull em out from underneath. I don't think they care about living anymore, so I think they are suicidal.
Y10Q I laugh cuz it hurts, honestly. My beloved cat who lived 20 (human) years also was suicidal before she passed. She walked into traffic uncharacteristically when she was diseased with mange. Week later i took her to doctor and she was put down. Tough day for me.
I just follow this guy because he is entertaining! I don't even work on my own car. I'll be honest, I hire someone for just about everything: toilet, sink, etc. I suck!!
Haha yeah I watch every Scotty video simply because it's entertaining and full of good info. I don't even actually have the car problems he solves but still great to watch.
I got mine this summer. Installed in about a hour or so. I like using this to park in the garage. I like to back into the garage. Heck I like backing in to park everywhere. But this camera is nice. It took me a little while to trust it. But you will come around.
I installed one on my mom's 2002 Camry, the hardest part was actually taking apart the trunk lid trim pieces to feed the wire through lol... That itself took a lot of Googling and Youtubing
***** Fairly difficult when there's more than one option available. People will watch this, want this one as he's demonstrated how to do it. I looked on Amazon and there's a tonne of different options available. Wireless ones, wired, 7" ones, small ones etc.
Thanks for posting up your videos. While this one doesn't show the details of the install, the overall idea is presented well enough. My only critique... I can't watch too long due to the way you're shouting at me in a Billy Mays style infomercial voice. Thanks for posting the videos, though. You, and the other people like you, are making life easier for countless numbers of people via RUclips.
Wow! everythings getting so cheap! insanity! pretty cool how it worked well too.. May have to put one on my Moms Car so shell stop runnin into things LOL!
I bought two different brands of these devices. The first one was expensive and the second one was cheaper (about $70). They both worked about the same. They worked well at night. During the day, the glare coming through the rear window made viewing the image very difficult. I had the rear window tinted for $80 and it was a little better.
Appreciate the video. Had a similar experience with a $14 Dash Cam earlier this year. Certainly not the best Camera around and it has its limits but the install was simple. The price is right, and a good proof of concept that I could DIY a few other things. Because of videos like this my '03 Sedan also has a Retrofit TPMS, which I love, it's completely wireless so anyone can install this quickly. A bit pricey near $100 but worth it as I was able to Monitor a slow Leak/Flat tire that I might have otherwise missed and driven on by Mistake ruining the tire or caused it to degrade more rapidly (possible catastrophic failure later) from low pressure/high heat buildup that would go unseen/ignored between Pressure checks.
Scotty sorry to see you leave Tn., your vids rock and it's nice to watch a good honest mechanic tell it like it is. I just got my van top 612 today and am deciding where to mount my rear camera but a near tag install is out because my led tag lights will wash out the camera. I am considering removing the lock barrel on my 99 f 150 tail gate and sliding the camera in there, I live in a congested area of Florida where everyone drives with a phone in their face so I can wait to get this thing operational. Thank you for the solid info and good luck to you.
I saw this video once before and then forgot all about it and then I go and buy one because I buy in Excursion and it's the exact same one thanks Scotty for showing me how easy this is I'm going the wireless way and I didn't think to tap into the stereo but now I'm going to thanks again
Hi Scotty, Is it legal to, though partially, cover the licence plate? Also I believe the mirror is a homologated component while the one that gets stuck on top isn't.
Question: you didn't snake your wires all hidden, tucked away, like other video show. Seems like less hassle, and the wires don't cause distraction, even hanging in your field of view?
Hey Scotty, I have a 96 Toyota Celica 2.2L that shows codes P0141 and P0401 for oxygen sensor bank 1 sensor 2 and EGR insufficient flow, respectively. What I've done so far: I put in another o2 sensor from another Celica manifold off a blown engine I had, as well as a VSV. I tested the original VSV with an ohmmeter and it was out of spec (tested about 45 ohms). I tested the EGR valve by sucking on the top tube to draw a vacuum and open it, making the engine die (I also watched your video dealing with the valve being carboned up at the intake, but if that was so, I don't think the engine would die if I did the vacuum test on it, would it? I'm not sure.). I disconnected the battery for an hour to clear the codes after swapping those parts and the light doesn't come on while driving an hour on the freeway, but when I turn off the engine then turn it back on, the light comes on. I also had o'reilly's clear the codes, same schtick.
UPDATE, I got good news: I got the EGR P0401 problem solved by doing the following: 1. Replaced the valve cover and spark plug tube gaskets, since they were hard and brittle and blowing oil on the exhaust manifold. 2. Used RTV silicone on the good vacuum hoses where they attached to the nipples so they don't leak, and replaced any old hoses that fit the nipples too loosely (THE SUCTION PROBLEM you mentioned). 3. Sprayed the PCV valve, EGR valve, and the metal EGR hose with carb cleaner (which were clean but I did it for good measure). EGR tested good, as well as the vacuum modulator and VSV tested good. I am now waiting on a Denso OEM O2 sensor with part number 234-2010 from here: www.ebay.com/itm/302074335049. I am left with a question: Would a bad valve cover gasket ever cause a P0401?
Hi Scotty Kilmer, I wonder if these would still work when exposed to heat. Like a car sitting in the sun in a tropical climate/in summer. I wanted to install these and a dashcam but worry they would be ruined by the heat. thanks
A backup camera would be nice sometimes, but I wouldn't want it on only when in reverse, so I'd probably have to feed 2 wires through to the front: One for the video, and one for a switch I can put in the dashboard. Plus, in this case a dedicated display might be better, so the mirror is still usable when the camera is on. But for people who only use it when in reverse, this is certainly a cool and cheap little gadget.
Hi Scotty, I'm a new driver and I got my new Mitsubishi Mirage G4 last year. Atm I having issues with alignment, I just recently got it fixed from a tire maintenance dealer and after 2 weeks I got the same issue(not sure if it's only the steering wheel) but not bad as it was used to be and I've driving it smoothly as possible. Any suggestions or can you give me a feedback about this car?
Great video Scotty! But...I gave ya a thumbs up, but you really phoned this one in! You yadda yaddad over the tough parts! We can figure out the easy stuff. We need you for the tough parts!
Hey Scotty, Need your help again. Hooked up my front and rear Dash camera system, works Great, Except, The rear Camera Displays Backward, or a Mirror Image. How the heck do I fix This? Thanx , JD.
Can I connect my camera with on/off switch? Or wire to parking lights. So I can turn it on while I'm driving. But problem is can this cameras work for prolonged time? Thanks a lot
Pretty cool setup but luckily for me my Ram 1500 already has one built into the tailgate handle. My brother has the exact same truck and Year but his doesn't have that option. Also unfortunately for the 2014 Ram 1500 the microphones for the voice activated features are mounted on the rearview mirror, so nothing it going to be able to fit onto it. One last thing, here in California the month/year tags are on top of the plate and can't be covered up. That would prove to be a problem for a lot of vehicles adding that camera setup.
Mr. Kilmer I was just curious so I bought a car without the fog lights package, I was wondering if I go to a scrap yard and buy oem fog lights if I could install them on my car.
Yeah, great video as it got me thinking on buying one. It would mount over the state name on the plate however. The other issue for me is the plate is on the left rear side of the vehicle as I have a rear mounted spare tire on the right side. Not sure if the view would be impacted/affected. Also, what about theft exposure?
I don't know why you only got 600k subs your personality is less cringy than chrisfix and more exciting than ericthecarguy. Maybe since you bash the rich Mercedes and BMW cars lol
AutOdometer I attribute it to jealous haters. But 600k subs is what others dream of. Most rich BMW and Mercedes owners are too snooty to watch RUclips repair videos in the first place. Secondly, they're taking their cars back to the dealer for any little repair and aren't about to get dirty trying to their own repairs.
any chance there's a different source for the wireless transmitter, or another option? i'm likin' it so far, though! i've got a gigantic, lincoln town car and don't want to mess with wiring. hell, even the wireless may not reach that far, lol!
Question about the back up mirror camera that you supplied a link for.....Will this camera work at night also, I guess I mean, does it have night vision?
Asymptote Some people just want to destroy other people property, but if its just stuck to the car anyone can take it off, but if its properly secured only the determined ones will
museack they can use JB weld or any other plastic fixign thing, even the plastic welding thing to fix that and make it usable, not being negative just saying that aunscrewable screws wont make much of a difference if someone really tries to steal it
Scotty, I bought a similar kit for my '05 Tacoma. The image ticks on for a split second every second or so. Having a hell of a time diagnosing the cause. The power for the camera is drawn from splice in reverse light positive and negative. The mirror monitor is powered from the reverse trigger wire in the driver side kick panel. Would I need a voltage stabilizer at both power taps? Something else?
I want this for my 60's dodge van but I'd like to just have a generic screen on the dash to plug it into. Maybe put one on the front so I can see exactly what I'm driving over like if I go over a hill when I'm driving off road, sometimes you can't see too good.
For vehicles with obscured or non-existent rear windows, yeah, but on any other vehicle is weird. People who 'need' (as in 'can do without') these backup cameras clearly didn't make the wisest vehicle purchase. It takes a sec to turn that neck and use mirrors. Good tip on this for those still unfamiliar with the concept though, Scotty. Looks like someone's company van who backs into loading areas. This one's interesting with the green/yellow/red marking since the monitor typically has a poor depth of field.
Re That was my first note. If you need one, sure go for it. I've just about had it with people coming to me with these because they're a new thing and just want it just... because.
Hey Scott: My mom's 2007 Chevrolet Uplander has issues with the rear quarter windows not opening at all, and I have no idea where the hell the wiring is for the rear windows. Would corrosion kill the connection? If so, should I salvage one off of a car at a junkyard or buy a new wiring harness and solder in the new one? "Stealerships" would charge me about $100 to look at it, plus the repair.
It can, just find another wire that is on when the cars ACC is on.. though most states have issues with that setup, and only allow it when in Reverse, as it provides a distraction.
Rigo F. lol implying any of the new fords are based on american models. that's not an appropriate response anyway to be like that. the fact is they have no rear visibility. whether you NO NO NO like ford or not.
Does the mirror also take power from the reverse kicking in or do you wire them separately ? so does the camera need to constantly be on standby by being wired into fuse box or something as an example?
They must have sold out, due to this video. Here's the name of the one he has: Chuanganzhuo backup camera tft-lcd monitor. If you look on Amazon though, you'll find similar ones for a little bit more.
Hey Scotty! What do you recommend as far as oil change intervals? Mine's a normal commuter, a 2005 ford focus 2.0L with 140k miles. I was thinking of using full synthetic oil since it's reached the "high mileage" part of it's life. Ford recommends changing every 5,000 miles, but my dad swears in his work vehicle (a 2008 Nissan Altima) that they do full synthetic and change it every 10k and thinks I should do the same. I've heard arguments for both sides of the fence - either change it every 3-4k religiously or change it every 8-10k with no problems. I'm sure it's a question you've covered before, but I couldn't find it in a video. Thanks!!!
Hi, Thanks for the video, I just purchased the rear view camera pack just like the one you used in your video, and installed it on a bmw 530i 2007 but I have a problem now which is after starting the car and going to reverse, the camera works for only afew secounds and then the camera goes blue and turning off( because of no signal I guess) I used reverse light for feeding positive to both camera and lcd(mirror) and for negative directly connected to the battery. May you please help me? some says I should use a relay and connect cam and lcd directly to positive of battery through a relay and use the reverse light signal just to switch the relay on. Do you think this will solve my problem?
Hey Scotty love seeing all the quick fixes and gadgets, but your viewers should check local laws on putting anything covering the license plate, up here in Ont. Canada some plate covers are illegal with $110. fine.
I'm going to be installing a camera on a truck. It has a trailer harness, so is it easier to use the reverse from that rather than the tail lights? thanks
I've been looking for one of these too but I want one that has a compass and the auto dimming function as well as the back up camera. The ones I have found appear to be over $600 but I gotta believe there's something less than that
Awsome. But unfortunately my country employs "security" screws on the license plate so it cant be undone. Hmm. I'll figure something out. Thx Scotty for the heads up! Didnt know these existed.
The "new version" linked costs $25 for the mirror-monitor alone. There is a disfferent one for $30 with a camera included. Transmtter/receive another $13. The indicated dimensions of the mirror are less than the width of my stock mirror.
on a different note trying to upgrade my 2007 Chrysler Aspen limited GPS Junkie stereo monitor how do you measure it to find a very good fit so that you don't have a ton of plastic 2 cover gaps
Hey scotty! I'd like some quick advice if you can spare a minute. So I had my horrible electric ABS system in my 90' T-Bird SC converted to Vacuum (per your recommendation), but ever since the car has been stalling. The mechanic told me it was the MAF sensor, which I replaced, but it still stalls. It never did this before I had the brakes converted. I think it might be a leaky booster, because the boost gague is showing low vacuum at idle. But, I'm not sure what to say to my mechanic. In your opinion, should I demand him to put a new booster in for free (if it's the culprit), or what? I don't wanna be a jerk to him since I can tell he's an honest man, but I also just spent $600 on a repair that caused more problems. Thanks! Your videos have saved me so much money xD.

People pay hundreds of dollars for this feature in new cars. It's cool that you can do it for $20.
Standard equipment in more or less every car today, at least in Europe.

this guy aint the best at video editing but damn smart with cars.

Yeah, he faked the tire sound, but it doesnt matter, we are here for his car knowledge :)
It's part of the charm, I say.

I don't do links unless they are sponsored. I just did this all on my own, if you go to amazon you can easily find it.
That's fair enough. I had a look and I think I've found it. You're lucky in America though, the same kit is priced at £40 here.

I love Scotty when he says "rev up your engines" and he doesn't rev it😂
I frickin love Scotty dude
thanks for the tip scotty! where can i buy one?
I have run across this camera, wondered if it really worked. Thanks
hey scotty nice vid ..thanks a lot man..ill buy one..
Scotty, where did you get the actual camera? The product you liked seems to only include the mirror assembly.
Hi Scotty Kilmer,
I wonder if these would still work when exposed to heat.
Like a car sitting in the sun in a tropical climate/in summer.
I wanted to install these and a dashcam but worry they would be ruined by the heat.
thanks
id like to know the same, as i cant leave a dash cam in the truck without the battery exploding during the 120* summers :/
only time would tell on that, but any car parked in the sun will deterioate plastic, that's just a fact.
It's very cheap compared to more known systems, or factory systems. You don't lose hundreds of dollars of this goes bonkers on you.
A backup camera would be nice sometimes, but I wouldn't want it on only when in reverse, so I'd probably have to feed 2 wires through to the front: One for the video, and one for a switch I can put in the dashboard. Plus, in this case a dedicated display might be better, so the mirror is still usable when the camera is on. find a better aligment shop, many tire dealers don't have such great mechaniccs, go to a real front end shop that does ONLY that.
Another Scotty gem!
I really wish you could show how to hook up a Lamtto Wireless CarPlay to a 2002 Buick LeSabre because this was a great video!
hey Scotty I heard all cars sold in the USA will be required to have back up cameras after 2017
yep
All cars made since 2014!
Unlucky great way to push the prices of basic economy cars and works vehicles up for the consumer who don't want the damn things anyway.
Gravemind it’s a safety thing. I’m fine with it. Plus if it’s a standard feature now it’s not expensive to implement
Great video Scotty! But...I gave ya a thumbs up, but you really phoned this one in! You yadda yaddad over the tough parts! We can figure out the easy stuff. We need you for the tough parts!

That's a great little gadget fair play, goon one Scotty.
only thing i see is your covering the texas with the camera ? here in florida you'd get a ticket ,,each state is different , nice job thanks
love this guy makes everything sound easy. cheers big ears. keep it rolling
can you use a backup camera and monitor set as just a regular camera? i wanna set one up in my house.
All my cars have back up cameras so I'm good. I'm just so used to them that they actually help
Mr. Kilmer I was just curious so I bought a car without the fog lights package, I was wondering if I go to a scrap yard and buy oem fog lights if I could install them on my car.
sure, you'd just need to rewire them
Yeah, great video as it got me thinking on buying one. It would mount over the state name on the plate however. The other issue for me is the plate is on the left rear side of the vehicle as I have a rear mounted spare tire on the right side. Not sure if the view would be impacted/affected. Also, what about theft exposure?
This all looks great but where can I take it to have a professional install it? I don't want to mess with the wires
what about snow or low temperature in winter season, will this camara work?
I don't know why you only got 600k subs your personality is less cringy than chrisfix and more exciting than ericthecarguy. Maybe since you bash the rich Mercedes and BMW cars lol
Chrisfix isn't that cringy
Lol can't have an opinion?
AutOdometer I attribute it to jealous haters. But 600k subs is what others dream of. Most rich BMW and Mercedes owners are too snooty to watch RUclips repair videos in the first place. Secondly, they're taking their cars back to the dealer for any little repair and aren't about to get dirty trying to their own repairs.
ChrisFix isn't cringy. He's just enthusiastic and passionate for cars, which is nice, really.
AutOdometer I
any chance there's a different source for the wireless transmitter, or another option? i'm likin' it so far, though!
i've got a gigantic, lincoln town car and don't want to mess with wiring. hell, even the wireless may not reach that far, lol!
well done Scotty. What brand was it?
Question about the back up mirror camera that you supplied a link for.....Will this camera work at night also, I guess I mean, does it have night vision?
NEVER MIND!
that wouldn't last a night here in my town, boom, stolen.
You could use special screws that cant be unscrewed with regular tools.
pretty sure the frame is plastic or a weak material, so they would easily rip it off even if the screws are unscrewable
if someone gonna rip it off your car, they will....they wouldn't care if it breaks or not so the solution is, Install it at your own risk.....
Asymptote Some people just want to destroy other people property, but if its just stuck to the car anyone can take it off, but if its properly secured only the determined ones will
museack
they can use JB weld or any other plastic fixign thing, even the plastic welding thing to fix that and make it usable, not being negative just saying that aunscrewable screws wont make much of a difference if someone really tries to steal it
Dude you are soo cool no matter what you do!!!!!!!!!!
Something else?
nice finish scotty!!
Sweet Idea. I
should get this for my friend that's hates to back up
I want this for my 60's dodge van but I'd like to just have a generic screen on the dash to plug it into. Maybe put one on the front so I can see exactly what I'm driving over like if I go over a hill when I'm driving off road, sometimes you can't see too good.
How well does it perform in the dark?
I guess it's ok since it has its own infrared leds built in and the reverse lights also provide some illumination
yes, works good in the dark with infrared leds on it combined with the back up lights
Thanks Scotty, great video.
Great video scotty
For vehicles with obscured or non-existent rear windows, yeah, but on any other vehicle is weird. People who 'need' (as in 'can do without') these backup cameras clearly didn't make the wisest vehicle purchase. It takes a sec to turn that neck and use mirrors. Good tip on this for those still unfamiliar with the concept though, Scotty. Looks like someone's company van who backs into loading areas.
This one's interesting with the green/yellow/red marking since the monitor typically has a poor depth of field.
What about vehicles where you can have the back obstructed by cargo?
ah, not weird. As in a dog or cat is behind the car, you won't see that without a camera. Or a small child.
I often park in an area that has little dogs running around and that kind of backup camera saved at least two of those little pricks.
Re That was my first note. If you need one, sure go for it. I've just about had it with people coming to me with these because they're a new thing and just want it just... because.
You can also get different lenses for most of them.
"Stealerships" would charge me about $100 to look at it, plus the repair.
try a salvage one AFTER checking the motors, they are notoriously weak and tend to rust out
Hi Scotty great video ,i drive a van so no rear mirror only side ones ,could this be wired to be a permanently on rear view mirror.
It can, just find another wire that is on when the cars ACC is on.. though most states have issues with that setup, and only allow it when in Reverse, as it provides a distraction.
Or you could just tape the mirror you got to your dashboard.
Another Kilmer video, another mustang burnout 😂
Hi scotty love your videos keep up the awesome work
I'm an Old School Driver, love the smell of gasoline in the morning, i don't need a camera to reverse, practicing gives you the hability/skill 😆
Drive any 2016 ford and you'll know why they have backup cams.
American Car is a No No No!!
I only drive Toyota or Honda 😂
Both are great cars. But other guy is right, modern car windows and visibility are getting smaller and smaller.
Rigo F. lol implying any of the new fords are based on american models. that's not an appropriate response anyway to be like that. the fact is they have no rear visibility. whether you NO NO NO like ford or not.
Does the mirror also take power from the reverse kicking in or do you wire them separately ? so does the camera need to constantly be on standby by being wired into fuse box or something as an example?
it takes power from reverse. It's not on standby, the reverse power just turns it on like a switcb
Thanks for reply
You said the mirror takes power from behind the radio because that's always on?
So I should power both devices to the reverse light?
What is the link to the camera used in this video? Any similar ones for under $20 are fine too.
Can you post a link to that back-up camera? Thanks.
They must have sold out, due to this video. Here's the name of the one he has: Chuanganzhuo backup camera tft-lcd monitor. If you look on Amazon though, you'll find similar ones for a little bit more.
Cheers Scotty. I need one of those.
Thanks!!!
stick to five on that old thing
Canada some plate covers are illegal with $110. fine.
On the video cable, what or how is the pink short cable connected? Please help.
Ps. Your videos are awesome!
nice trick... 😊😊😊😊..now all company will hate you 😗keep going.
I'm going to be installing a camera on a truck. It has a trailer harness, so is it easier to use the reverse from that rather than the tail lights? thanks
yes it is
I've been looking for one of these too but I want one that has a compass and the auto dimming function as well as the back up camera. The ones I have found appear to be over $600 but I gotta believe there's something less than that
+Scotty Kilmer, it looked like the camera had LED's in it. think you could follow up with how well it works at night?
I talked to sales and techs at Best Buy a few months ago, parts and labor, with in-dash monitor (replaces old radio) roughly $500.00!
that's why I found this thing to be rather amazing at 20 bucks
Awsome. But unfortunately my country employs "security" screws on the license plate so it cant be undone. Hmm. I'll figure something out. Thx Scotty for the heads up! Didnt know these existed.
That's really cool.
Hi Scott just wondering if you can do a video on a wireless backup camera since you said on this vid you did wired on this one :)
Scotty thanks, it's hard to drive a bargain these days! lol, It is amazing for price... Tuck wires??
Heck , duck tape works fine.............
Hey Scotty, another great video. Can you give a link to the amazon listing? I can't find this one or any other for $20. *LOVE YOUR SHOW!*
the evil swine raised the price after my video. I even made the video free, just go to amazon and see what's there now
so is it really worth it. how does it work at night?
I have an Acura TL 2005 Navi. I wanted to install a backup camera and wire it into the navi system. Is it possible?
Thanks! Your videos have saved me so much money xD.
could be a leaky booster, but any pro mechanic could pressure test it to find out, so start there
Hi Scotty, can you include the link for this cam? thanks,
that's not the right link. 20$ not 30
here it is ON THE WAY®4.3" Screen TFT 2 Channel Video Input Car LCD Rear View Rearview Mirror Monitor for Car Reverse Camera/DVD/VCR(PAL / NTSC/DC 12V) www.amazon.com/dp/B011E4CE1I/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_hZU3xbJCJP7QZ I just ordered it myself and the wireless adapter, 33$
thanks
