Scotty Kilmer this should've been yesterday's giveaway item. Or maybe next Monday. ☺
Scotty Kilmer thank you Scotty. I just bought brand new headlights for my 2005 Buick Rendezvous. And put LED bulbs inside. This is great to keep the headlights looking new before they go bad.

I’ve used toothpaste several times on plastic headlight housings. Generally the more gritty ones work best. Works great it was basically a cheaper version of those rubbing compounds but your car smells minty fresh too!
400 -> 600 -> 800 or 1000 sandpaper is fine.
Then laquer on. Works for many years before it needs a re-do.
Which ones are gritty?

The bottom line here is that both Scotty and Chris try really hard to help viewers with their cars, to the best of their knowledge anyway. It seems like Chis saw success with his method then immediately posted his video, as if he was under the impression that it was permanent. Chris isn’t a bad guy for posting something he believed true at the time and Scotty isn’t a bad guy for making sure we know the truth. They’re both trying their best to help us.
I couldn't agree more. I love both Chris' and Scotty's videos, and both do their best in trying to help DIYers out. I agree that clearcoat just doesn't cut it. I'm very glad to see this product work so well!

Used the Meguiar’s Restoration kit yesterday on my 2006 Corolla with very hazy lenses and though I had to use a little extra elbow grease (the compound on a drill mounted pad), combined with three coats of the UV clear coat spray, has transformed the lenses into good as new. Follow directions, tape off the area around the lens for overspray and it is super easy! Thanks for the tip!
Love scotty's enthusiasm and when he calls out car or parts companies for putting out "junk".
I had my headlights clear coated when I got my car painted. They started cracking and chipping bad .I’ll definitely try this method on my new car. Thanks Scotty
Big Nash did they sand the headlight first? If they didn't prep it then that's why. I just resurfaced my G35 head lights, but I've done it to other cars and I've never had my headlights chip after I sprayed clear.
Big Nash just apply clear bra film on them
CBR June they probably didn’t because the clear coat was pretty easy to remove
I tried these 2 products they worked really well. I’m pretty satisfied with them. Thank you so much Scotty!
A shout out to Scotty The Man. Great content, you are a true teacher, my compliments. A girlfiend had the same Celica you do, and hers had 375k miles on it, and ran perfectly. All car engines should be based on THAT engine alone. Keep rockin' on Scotty!
then the dealerships would not need mechanics and many could not rip you off for stupid stuff, everything today has obsolete built in to it so that production keeps going.
Way to many comments on here talking bad about chris. He may be wrong about this, I dont know, never tested his way of doing it. Chris and scotty are both great mechanics, there is no need to talk bad about either one of them, I can appreciate that scotty showed us a better way to do something.
Chris is method works too, just make sure to do it the right way. Scotty presented an preventive method as a best solution. Both methods require timely maintenance nonetheless. However, I wonder why my vehicles have never had faded headlights. I owned an BMW 118i 2006 and currently own an Toyota Auris Hybrid 2013. Both always had crystal clear headlights. I simply wash my car regularly, about once a month. If it gets dirty unexpectedly, I wash the dirty spot away by hand.
yeah, all 4 of my astros have glass too.
My Astro van has glass headlights, I don't get why modern cars use plastic.
slick_ej6
Plastic is easier to shape up, also cost-efficient for the manufacturer.
@@Henry_Jr_Watsson obviously because you took care of them...... which is another preventive method KEEP THEM CLEAN
why is everyone talking about Chris and toothpaste. Chris did a video where he sanded the headlights, then cleaned then up with rubbing alcohol and finally sprayed it with clear coat. truth is there are different ways to attack the problem. not everyone can get the products mentioned each RUclips video. so just get what's available to you and work with that.

I'm retired but was in the collision repair/refinishing field for almost 50 years, teaching it at a public technical school before retirement. I bought a 1998 Nissan Frontier new. In 2008 the headlights had yellowed and dulled. Most folks that sanded and clearcoated them missed one small, but critical step. I sanded and clearcoated them, sold the truck in 2019 with 397,000 miles on it. It still ran fine, everything worked, and the headlights still looked great. First: I used a high quality, name brand eurethane clear. I sprayed some purple power on them initially, which instantly dissolves the yellow dead plastic, it literally runs off the headlight immediately. Then I thoroughly rinsed it off, doing one headlight at a time. You want to rinse immediately because the purple power can dull surrounding trim and painted areas if left on too long. It saves alot of sanding as the yellow is gummy and a pain to aand off. I wet sanded them with 800 grit. Today's eurethane clears, especially name brand, have very powerful uv screeners. But, if it peels, what good is it? After the headlights dried, I taped them up for the clearcoat. The critical step: before clear, I applied one wet coat of plastic parts adhesion promoter. Its clear, and can be purchased at parts stores etc., I've seen it at certain Walmart's. After a 20 minute dry time I applied 2 coats of clear, with recommended dry time between. Applying plastic parts adhesive promoter is a must, if not, the clear will inevitably delaminate over time.
Don't forget about overspray when applying these to your headlights. Protect the metal surrounding the headlight by taping and covering around it, otherwise the product will get all over the body of your car.
Not important. Cars body wil be also more protected afterwards
@@falconflylow since you're here... is it really just spray on and no wiping after? it doesn't run?
I just did this method at the beginning of the year on a 2001 forester and a 1996 toyota camry. After a good buff cleaning with rubbing compound I applied this coating and it dries crystal clear. It looks a little hazy but after about 20 minutes you wont believe it. Follow the directions and your good to go. You rock Scotty.
Do you need to take the headlight out to spray them? What about overspray onto the painted body panels? Thanks.
Karl Tech I was thinking the same. I'm going to mask the surrounding panels with newspaper and masking tape as my headlights are a nightmare to remove.
5 years later how's it looking?
YOU FORGOT ONE MAJOR THING SCOTTY! Remember to ALWAYS top off your blinker fluids.
Thanks for the tip. This worked well on my '99 Tahoe and a '99 Ford F150. The lenses were pretty yellowed and came out almost completely clear. I have tried a few restoration kits with not much better success. I went over the lenses a couple of times with the PlastX and then the coating. Will see how long lasting it is.

what about year later?
Yea how long did it last??
@St0rm3334* is it still lasting you? I've heard that just using that polishing repair doesn't fully remove the outer layer and will result in you having to go back and redo it every few months.
@@greeny5155 I used it yesterday and it did make a difference! However one of my headlights is older than the other due to an accident, that one needs to be sanded or something because it has a thick layer of oxidation that didn’t come off or shine up. I’ve read that if you wet sand with high grits then due the polish and finish with clear coat it should last

If they are really yellowed I sand with an abundance of water with 600 paper, then finish with 1000 or 1200 then use meguires compound polish. You can go to even finer polishes
did you have to restore again and then use meguiars or did you put it on top of the yellow lights?

I've tried several different ways to protect my lights. Living in upstate NY, and driving through winter, there isn't much you can do to save the lenses from road salt, sand, gravel, etc. The best solution I've found, was Lamin-X film. I have a pair of Hella 500FF fog lights on my push bar. After getting pelted with everything winter can throw at it, even the film wipes off clean, and looks great, not to mention the lenses they are protecting. If you have to drive in bad weather, or off road, I can't say enough about how well this film works.
ok this is different than what Chrisfix did. He fixed damaged headlights. your method is preventitive. also, most people attempting what he did don't know what they're doing.
sand, clear coat, and wax. the wax is what protects the clearcoat from the sun and scratching. even if someone applies the clearcoat correctly, odds are they're too lazy to wax it. his idea works in theory but most people half ass it and say it sucks.
I like this video though bc the comments are funny
I'm with you. I did my headlights 3 years ago with 2k clear coat. They looked new then and still do now. I 1500 sanded the clearcoat about a week after it dried, buffed them out and wax twice a year. Completely clear, Smooth as glass
The best fix I've ever found to get rid of yellowing is simply bug spray, like Deep Woods Off--it's a miracle.
Also, a quick question - Scotty, I love your videos!!! You're the best on RUclips. Per your suggestion, I picked up a used 2013 Toyota Camry in excellent condition. It has high miles (190K) but it will work perfect for my soon-to-be-driving son and daughter. I noticed in eco mode there's a very subtle shutter at 4k rpms. I'm worried that the torque converter is the suspect even though it's not a problem yet. Can I just drive in sport mode and avoid the "flex lockup" of the torque converter and avoid any damage?
Scotty your the only person on video I take advice from without filling I need to research the products everything has been spot on thanks
I did use Chris' method, but it was not permanent. The headlights eventually turned yellow after about a year. I'm now using Wipe New by Rustoleum, been on for about 2 months now and still looks clear. Will see how it holds up after a year. Will definitely be trying this product on my in-law's Toyota Sienna, Scotty. Thanks for your honesty.

Scotty, what’s the best way to take off or buff off one of those old faded cracked bras on a car, ty
Truth Is everyone has their own methods. Also other RUclipsrs have shown the same way as ChrisFix for a reason. It can work If you do It properly and don't buy cheap clear coat. I used 2k that Is used for the clear on the paint of cars and It looks just fine. If you get bad results with a cheap $5 can of clear coat from Walmart blame yourself for going the cheap route. And Scotty's method shown In this video also works great. Either way I'd still recommend using Meguiar's on your headlights like Scotty said, It's the same as car paint, If you don't try to maintain It, It will fade. Common sense people. Stop arguing.
No it never work

Let the call-outs begin
Scotty, I'll have to get that Mequiar's Headlight Coating before my headlights on my 2014 Ford get hazed. Thanks for this video.
Meguiar's headlight coating spray is the best on the market! But before applying if you have damage, you need to do a proper sanding restoration and then polish and spray. And if done right, OEM headlights can be resorted up to 30 times! But when applying the coating never double coat the headlights! One heavier application is always the way to do this properly. It will hard shell dry to the touch (crust up) in 1 to 3 minutes, but it needs to cure longer than that before you drive the vehicle.
Scotty Kilmer: *I'M NOT SHOUTING, THAT'S JUST THE WAY I TALK!!!!!* 🤣
Mr RC Scotty is a whole lot more entertaining than all those RUclips guys who start every sentence with, “OK, so ....” and don’t plan in advance what they are going to say and take 5 times as long to say it as they need to. Then introduce you to their dog. Scotty plans and is to the point.
He's skered. That's why!
Don't over do it buddy😎

i have to lower the volume lol
There's some good things from Chris, but I'll take the advice of someone with years of experience in maintenance like Scotty. I read alot of comments from Chris's fans saying "I don't even have a car, yet I am here" all the time, I bet those are the people disliking this video. You go scotty!
why would you watch car repair videos without owning a car?
Adam Adamson that's what I'm saying, I seen it a few times in the comments on Chris's videos. I think they like him just because of his acscent. Don't get me wrong though, nobody's dissing Chris, I like him, but when there's a better way to do it, then Its good to show it, like Scotty did.
Macarius freestyle Ah, the mountain climber freaks. Figures 😉
Conspirazy did they say they didn't even own a car either??
Macarius freestyle
They say they watch it without even having a car because
Chris fix makes his video entertaining while also doing mechanical work
Well that’s my opinion while Scotty
His a professional mechanic and all but doesn’t keep the watchers eyes
Not hating just an opinion
Bug repellent works too, like deep woods. Spray it on, wait a few seconds, then wipe off the yellow foggy film. Clean with water. Works great
Hay Scotty. I feel depressed watching your clips lately. Where's all the hands shaking and turbo energy we got from you.? You should move back to Texas and drink some of that good old moonshine when the Mrs ain't around. Loved watching this restoration for the God knows how many times.
Been using Meguiar's for years, Scotty is correct. If the rest of you are so smart MAKE YOUR OWN VIDEO!!!!
Do you have to re-apply the coating every time it rains or only once a year?
Thanks.
🤗 Scotty Rocks. And sooo agree with you.
Does it matter if you get a little bit on the car as well? Or do you use painters tape to protect the car
He contradicts his self .
Thing is dude I’ve polished headlights and they’ve lasted 5 years or so, still crystal clear. sooo...
Damn Scotty why you starting beef😤😤😩
He's just making friendly fun, relax LOL
Justin Smith frrrrrr
I changed my Name lol
Thank you… I’m hearing all kinds of other opinions but going trust yours and just ordered their heavy duty version for the old Chrysler hoping it negates the need to replace all the rough looking plastic housings.
I just ordered Meguire's plast-X last week to re-do 15 year old headlights. I wet sanded them a year ago with 1000 grit and put cheap clear coat on them. They looked good for a few months. At the time, I only had access to the car for 1 hour. This time I will use the 2000 grit added to 1000 grit. Then the plast-X polish. Now I have to buy the Meguire's sealant. I start with oven cleaner when they are yellow like after 14 years.
Came because the title....stayed for the comments lol
Right.
I came because my headlights are fricken yellow

Hi Scotty, I always love your videos. About a year ago I used the Sylvania headlight restoration kit and my headlights came out pretty darn good! But.. It had started to get hazy again a year later. I like the method you used here (wish I seen this one sooner). Anyway, can I do this now over what I did a year ago? Do I need to take off the spray that the kit had me end the restoration with? I'd love to try this but I want to make sure I do it correctly.
Sandra
I was duped by people who told me to do things to my headlights that, like you said, have made them look worse than they did in the first place. Love your videos and I remember first hearing your segments on Houston news TV and have grown to really love most of what you say. I'll try this on my 2008 Lincoln with 170,000 miles that you said wasn't going to even make 100,000 miles .. :) LOL
