How to Install a Backup Camera

- Here's how to install a backup camera on any vehicle.
A backup camera aids with seeing behind your vehicle by projecting a live video feed onto a display embedded in your car's dashboard. With modern vehicle design minimizing rearward visibility, a backup camera is almost a standard design feature.
This video is a step by step tutorial on how to install a backup camera on a 2004 Toyota Camry, but the procedure is similar for many sedans and coupes. The camera was bought on eBay. A compatible head-unit with an LCD screen and video input is also required.
The backup camera comes with power wires and a video line tied to the reverse trigger wire. The camera is mounted on the plastic trim above the license plate, and the wire is drilled through the decklid, down the hinge and to the quarter panel, to be powered by the taillight. The video feed continues up the quarter panel into the vehicle's interior, where it is run along the center console and to the head unit.
It is important to tie down all loose wiring with zip ties to minimize the risk of the cables interfering with anything or getting frayed on a moving part. The wires provided are long enough to reach the front of the vehicle, however a patch wire is required if the reverse light on the vehicle is mounted on the quarter panel instead of on the deck lid like most vehicles.
Camera quality is reasonable for a basic eBay sourced camera. Distance markers are embedded to gauge how far back the car is, and the viewing angle is modest at best. There is no night vision but the camera picks up details nicely with the limited illumination of the reverse and license plate lights.
A backup camera is no replacement for using your shoulders and/or mirrors when backing up.

I’m so entertained when you are mentioning using everyone stuff other than yours! You got me laughing halfway through your video love it!!! LMAO!
Glad you appreciate my use of what I have around me...no need for expensive tools!
Lmao 😂 me too he used a toothbrush then someone’s underwear
youtube mechanic wipes a dirty car with his wife's silk scarf
Yep. Gotta use what I find
it's very handy to have a backup camera so not to run over your wife when you back up.
if you have a mother in law, then don't install a backup camera :)
That backup camera kit must be a one of one because it’s the only kit that comes with your brother’s handy toothbrush. 😂
Yep it sure is!
I now automatically like as soon as the toothbrush appears - it's like a Pavlovian response.
Extremely useful since I'm doing this on the exact same car!
Every appliances should have a spare tooth brush
They sure are handy!
I have no signal currently when in reverse, and I have the 2 in 1 rca cable like yourself with red ends on either side of the yellow video signal rca.
I haven't connected the rear red end though but looking at your video I see you have connected it to the reverse + trigger as well as the rear cameras red wire.
Was not sure as I got no inductions with this Amazon cam but now it all makes sense looking at yours but one dude was telling me to connect to ground which didn't make sense to me at all as the head unit needs a trigger and why would it be red instead of black.
Fingers crossed I get it right!
Very informative video man as I have yet to see anyone explain the those red ends, thanks!
You could've gotten your power source and trigger from the dash instead of going through all the hassle. The reverse lights gets its power from the front of the vehicle anyway.
I used to the red trigger wire as a power wire to power the camera from the dash, and I used a separate wire for the trigger from the same source. It's much better, since the voltage gose down when wires get longer and some head units needs a full 12 v to wake up the screen
Yes if you have the wiring diagram finding the reverse wire upfront is easy
Depending on what camera you get, you may not have to drill a hole into the main trunk body. I took off one of those plastic clips holding the chrome trim and just fed the wire through there. Also IMO it’s much easier to just feed the wire through the side trims.
Next time I'd get the one that replaces the license plate bulb
3:49, take care of those rust spots! Nice upgrade to older car. No need to spend $$ on a new car just to get up to date electronic gizmos.
Yes this deck lid is pretty Rusty in other places too, if I find a clean one in the junkyard in the same color I'll swap it someday
@@speedkar99 I just sand interior spots, hit them with some rust converter and a shot of primer and move on. You're more dedicated than me :)
hmm didnt think of taking the reverse signal off the tail light... that should work well for my radio swap and backup camera install using a 2019 toyota 86 radio in my 2005 tundra (almost plug and play. it is plug and play if you dont want a reverse camera.)
Yes the tail light is the easiest place to trace the reverse signal.
Dude, this is how to install a camera the hard way. Have ever heard of loom and shrink tube? I do give you props though, installing in the snow! Fuck that!
What's wrong with snow? I work in winter all the time. No I haven't heard of loom and shrink. How does it work?
Oh maan Thanks for this vid
I was planing on installing a back view cam on my car 😁👍👍
And dude you almost reached a 100k subs
U planning on some special project or any giveaway...... 😁😁😁😁?
Thanks
I might have another small project coming...stay tuned next week and follow me on Instagram for clues
You are welcome
I used to think your brother loses an underwear or a tooth brush every time you make a new video; but, this time, I finally realized that you are giving your brother and wife opportunities to continue buying new ones... Nice guy after all! ;) Thanks for the video!
Yep and as long as they buy new ones I'll keep stealing them
Amazing explanation and funny lol my wife’s scarf 😂😂👌
Gotta use what I find haha
There are a few backup cameras that use a special small video connector so the drill hole doesn't have to be as big.
Yes. I should have looked for those
Imp. Tools for installing backup camera
1.lots of toothbrush 2.family laundry
Very true
Could you provide a link to the camera you used?
Get Fisheye Backup Camera, you will thank me later!
Did you ever use your dishwasher for cleaning car parts
Nope
That head unit needs an adapter around it. Crutchfield give them for free/or deeply discounted if you buy your head unit from them.
Thanks. You are right, I got the car with it like that. I can't find the bezel alone, they all come with the wiring kit which I don't need.
Excellent video... much detailed... But why you have to steal from your poor brother so much?!!!
Thanks. My brother isn't poor.
@@speedkar99 love to see your next video 😀
I did mine with a camera that came with a small screw diameter, I didn't have to drill a huge hole.
The scarf belongs to the lady he run over before he had backup cam.
Aww
I think its easier to not remove the rear seat and run the camera wire through the grommet like you show and then straight to the side of the seat and down the door molding. Then follow the floor/door molding all the way to the front of the car and come up under the dash, take the head unit out and string in from the back. I'm betting the Reverse Triggering from the head unit would give you the same affect as the rear backup light as well.
HAS ANYONE SAW SPEEDKAR99 BROTHER HE HAS STOLEN MY TOOTHBRUSH
Yeah he is still sleeping
Hey! I have a 99 camry radio and want to add bluetooth module to it. But I messed up my last radio trying to do it :/. Would you be willing to add Bluetooth to my radio and make a video on it? Let me know!
Man I absolutely love your vids!
Your next BIG PROJECT should be a Climate Contril unit SWAP
Thanks, I'm glad you appreciate
I sacrificed/broke one squeeze clip to pass the wire, I didn't have to drill the body. You need to make sure you buy a camera with disconnect point between the camera and the RCA in order to pass it easily through any available small hole, no drilling needed.
Yes, I realized that after I bought the camera. They also sell cameras that sit in the place of one licence plate light
Any suggestions on camera ?
Nice and understandable explanation - Thank you!
You are welcome
You need " Fish Eyes " Camera. This will allow you to see further on the sides, in case someone on Left / Right Side
Good tip, a wide angle lense would be great
Why did you use your brother's toothbrush and socks 🤦🏻♂️? You also used your wife's scarf🤦🏻♂️
I bought a back up camera from Ebay yesterday just like this one. But I'm afraid I'll have to return it as it doesn't come with the toothbrush to do the appropriate cleaning.
Yeah return it, show them this video and demand for your toothbrush
1:22 toothbrush not included
Haha u gotta look for it on eBay
And finally this video come to an end, btw good video!
Puedes conectar una así en un lexus is250 2014?
Has water got inside the camera yet?
Not water, but something is causing it to appear like there's dust on the lense although it doesn't look like it. Annoying
On today's episode I will use my wife's expensive sil scarf and my brothers tooth brush.
(Later) Sorry I haven't been making videos, I had to take my brother to get his teeth replaced because he hasn't brushed his teeth since I took his toothbrush and then visit my wife in the hospital because her neck got to cold and she caught pneumonia because she couldn't find her scarf.
LOL
Speedkar99: Well that's going to be $500 in labor.
Karen: What?!! I could a glued that dam Camara myself!!! Where's your manager?!!
Haha
Congratulations on 100k subs bro keep up the good work 👍
You are welcome Ziyad
Congratulations on 100 K subscribers
Thanks very much!
Fine Business!!! We were wondering why you had to use the provided toothbrush instead of your brothers. Then we heard you had to use his sock and guessed you couldn't get both.Towards the end it was revealed that you also had brother s toothbrush so all is well!!!
Thanks. Haha good uses
Excellent video - Thank you.
Wow that's a lot of work. I was considering installing one but I am not sure I have a day to do that. Nice tutorial though.
Thanks.
It's not alot of work...just alot of things to take apart of you want a clean installation
I come for the installation information, I subscribe for the jokes.
Thanks for subscribing
I'm installing the type where it comes with an over-sized bluish auto dimming rear view mirror, that clips onto my existing windshield mirror.
The mirror has the 127mm TFT monitor built into it.
That's nice, but I'd find that rather small
That's what they all say- until they gag on it.
Nice vid bro. By the way, the toothbrush bristles, are they soft, medium or hard?? 😂😂
I like it hard so they can clean agressively.
Great video! I installed a backup camera to my 2002 camry a couple of months ago. I have a question my camry has 2 antenna ports since my head unit only has one port what do you do with the other antenna port? I notice really poor radio reception. Ihave a suggestion: Remote start
I'm not sure about the antenna port, unless your talking about GPS?
I didn't want to "like" this video. It was at 99 likes.
On the other hand, I can't let someone else break into the triple digits!
>clicks thumb up
Let me break 100K subs soon 🤣
@@speedkar99 I would, but it's not up to me!
you are the best
I sure am😎
I have a feeling that you're going to need the camera while backing out of the driveway once your wife finds out you used her scarf ;)
Haha good one
Yeah me too!!! i want to know one thing, "who's" toothbrush???
Great video. Hello from Vietnam
Hello from Canada
Thank you for making this video thanks
A lot of effort doing on making this video on freezing cold day
You are welcome. It sure was cold.
Great video! you're so close to 100k, any minute now.
Thanks for your support. Share to help me get there
speedkar99 no
G
You are right! How'd you guess?
Hi, could you show inside a vacuum, oil, and water pumps??
Sure, I already have a video on engine lubrication and cooling
any reason you cant just run ground to the negative on the reverse light you ran the power to?
Yes you can. Keep in mind the wire has to flex through the hinge of the trunk so it's just extra wiring that can break down the road
“My wife’s scarf, my brothers sock, my brothers toothbrush”
Use your own stuff pal! 😂😂😂😂
Congrats for exceeding 100000 subscribers.. You are great.
Thanks for your contributions
Do a video of how to change a cylinder without key and put a knew key
Hmm that's a good idea...how to rekey a cylinder!
baha it did not come with a dirty old toothbrush in the kit
Nice. You need to fix the radio missing frame.
Yea I need to get the whole kit for that
Just love how you make use of “family stuff” in the process. Funny & entertaining idea from an intelligent man:). Thank you.
So got a question...
I have a head unit and installed a rear view camera...
It works for 2-3 seconds when I get to reverse and after that lines appear in screen and then gets a black screen!!!!
LOL are you the toothbrush king??? Great video!
No I just make the best of my tools
I like your hobo gloves
Haha they sure are useful
do you have the link to the type of backup camera that was used? I have an '02 Camry so I'd like to see which one will be similar to buy
I don't have a link. There aren't much that fit the bezel like these left on eBay. I had to replace mine after a year
@@speedkar99 Issue with the camera?
I finally got around to installing it. I took a few days last week of April 2021. I tried to shortcut the connection by using t-tap wires. That wasn't working. I redid the wiring connection like you did, having good wire connections. It worked. Thanks for doing the video.
talk about a lot of work! But your doin it right
Man this is complicated
Camera: !Great video on how to install a backup camera!
Thanks
That is a LOT OF WORK ! how much do you charge if someone wants to hire to to install the camera like you did in this video
Hahahaha bro this video is hilarious. (Obviously super helpful) but also so funny. Thanks for sharing man!
Link to camera?
Alright, free toothbrush with the kit. New or used?
Used
Ah, the toothbrush! Thx bro.
Too much work to install [go wireless]
That's another option yes
Nice video but I think the center console was unnecessary to remove you could of go around it like I did
Brought to you by Colgate tooth brushes
My brothers toothbrush
Nice video. does this work on all cars?
Yes
Funny stuff 😀
Your videos are awesome.I am a fan of yours.
Thanks very much

Thanks from Canada

A really genius man. God bless you.

Boy you sure like toothbrushes! 😊
I use them because my brother doesn't
now its in my next upgrade plan
All the best
Have you done this to your solara?
No, I don't have the solara anymore
Bro you are awesome. You are love.
Thanks for the compliment

You are welcome! Are you planning on installing a backup camera in your car?

You need 255 subs for 100K as of this moment. How about a quick toothbrush giveaway video? Maybe use some infrared and steal the one your brother is currently using and swap it with the one from the camera kit. That'll push you over the top!
Yeah I have been looking at toothbrushes and other options... something's in the works
@@speedkar99 I'd enter for an old toothbrush giveaway. BTW, thanks for this video. I have a 2002 camry and have been thinking of doing this so this gives me some good ideas.
new hero, installing camera in the snow, genuine american spirit
Thanks for another Grate usefull video, yesterday I install mine on my trailblazer. It would be COOL if you show how to install a power box with slots for install any accesories...
You are welcome
That unused wire harness on the decklid is for the middle brake light if the car has a spoiler
No, that was the other harness on the right side, which is connected because my car has an aftermarket spoiler. This one I couldn't get it to power on with all lights so I'm not sure what it was for, but I used it as ground.
A link to the camera would have been nice.
This is the genius transmission guy! Great videos man. Appreciate the bits of humor😅
Thanks. What transmission?
Good video very informative and entertaining
My old car can now be like a 2019 model. Keep it up👍
Didn't even disconnect the battery haha
No need
Hey nice tutorial man, also do you recommend that Hizpo headunit?? Has it given you any trouble? Thanks
It's been working great, no issues at all for what I thought was a cheap Chinese headunit. It came with my car
@@speedkar99 Oh sweet, thanks bro
Did you paint that hole you drilled in the trunk? It would really be a shame to replace the whole panel because of exposed metal that turned into rust.
Yes, it is important to protect all the surfaces, I sealed it off to prevent water intrusion. To be honest this trunk lid is already Rusty and the color is common so I might just get a used one from the junkyard at some point.
@@speedkar99 darn, sorry to hear. Maybe you'll do an install video if you get a new panel? Thanks for this tutorial.
