it's a little more than that to me. it's a bit of anti- status quo overall. Like it's talking about politicians or govt in general. And how divided we are and how if we are ever to fix things we have to be united. There's an entire industry built by the powers that be that use the media to keep us at odds with each other and not looking at the man behind the curtain.

Skunk’s guitar solo is fantastic! What a player, always doing something unexpected and inventive
You can tell these guys are players first and performers second. They do a great job live, but you see the headphones, mic placements and lack of theatrics. They wanted to make solid, accurate music foremost and the energy came from the strength of the performance.
Agreed, the doobies took off when Jeff"Skunk" Baxter and Micheal McDonald joined the band in 1974. Skunk and McDonald both played in Steely Dan, but when Steely Dan decided to only do studio music with no touring McDonald joined the Doobie Brothers with Skunk and the rest in history
What's amazing about Michael MacDonald and the Doobie Brothers is that I just saw on PBS their live 50th anniversary concert st Radio City Music Hall I'm NY, and they sound exactly the same as day one! They interviewed Tom Johnston and he said that they love performing together and still have fun doing it. And he also said that if they didn't have fun, the what's the point in doing it,?

Remember the song they did, "Jesus is alright with me?" Also, he and the sax player started out doing a piano/sax rendition of "Amazing Grace" . His wife, Amy, many years ago battled breast cancer. He told the story about how his faith sustained them..God healed her, she is now cancer free! They are very humble and have been true to one another for many years. A great testimony!! Be blessed!!😘

Michael McDonald is without a doubt the very best most awesome soulful vocalist going back to the 70’s. He has been on his own for the past 25 years after being a member of Steely Dan & the Doobie Brothers Band’s. He has written many songs & he plays several instruments while performing at his concerts. His voice & his music HI don’t knowis as good in person at a concert that he is on his recorded music. He is the absolute beat! I love every song Michael McDonald sings.

Michael McDonald is only about 25 years old in this video....but he already had that voice! His piano skills arent too shabby either! There is no one else like him... You really should check out his solo work. He has some really beautiful, soulful songs. His Motown cover albums are really great too.

Both McDonald and Jeff Baxter (the seated guitarist) played and sang on many early Steely Dan songs.

Backing vocal on Peg is legendary. Michael describes the sessions as humbling. If you can make it with The Dan, you can make it anywhere.

When MM joined the band the sound changed from more classic rock/boogie rock to a more slick jazz/soul/gospel influenced sound. MM took clearly to the song to church!

When I first heard this song, I couldn't get enough of it -- played it over and over and never got tired of it. The best "boogie rock band" out there. So much talent, every one of 'em.
He also did backing vocals with Steely Dan on the Aja and Gaucho albums. Nowadays, The Doobies and Steely Dan often appear in concert together, and it's basically a Michael McDonald and Donald Fagen festival!
This live version of "Takin' It To The streets" is freakin' great! The Doobie Brothers are just that kind of band, whether it's live or it's the studio, they absolutely jam! I've always liked this song and the message it brings, yeah, you wanna learn about the people, take it to the streets. There's another song (if you're interested) of theirs with Michael McDonald on vocals called "It Keeps You Running" believe me, you won't be disappointed. I really enjoyed this video reaction, thanks!
This song stands true to this day. It's very meaningful now. I just wish people would listen to it. Had people listened to it then we wouldn't be wishing they'd listen now. Would we?

The Doobie Brothers have been around for 5 decades & covered many genres of music over the years. They had so many great songs such as "What A Fool Believes", "Listen To The Music", "Jesus Is Just Alright", "Long Train Runnin'", "China Grove", "Black Water", "Takin' It To The Streets", "The Doctor", "It Keeps You Runnin'", "Echoes Of Love", "You Belong To Me", "Take Me In Your Arms" etc.

I adore the Doobie Brothers. One of the tightest bands to experience in a live performance. Check out their "Rockin Down the Highway: The Wildlife Concert" especially "China Grove" . Tom Johnson is one of the greatest vocalists in rock history. The entire band's musicianship is top notch.

Not just a great singer great musician writer and composer and the deeper you dive into these guys there's decades there man you're really going to dig them
You mentioned the guitar soloist. His name is Jeff "Skunk" Baxter. He was a founding member of Steely Dan. Thereafter, he was in The Doobie Brothers for about 5 years. He was the one who suggested that Michael McDonald join the band after Tom Johnston had to retire for health reasons (having worked with McDonald in Steely Dan). He has continued to perform in the years since then. But here is the most interesting thing about Baxter.... since about the mid-90s, he has worked as a defense consultant and chaired a Congressional Advisory Board on missile defense. 😮 The following is kinda long, but it's a direct quote from Wiki, and it's pretty interesting and impressive (IMO):

Baxter fell into his second profession almost by accident. In the mid-1980s, his interest in music recording technology led him to wonder about hardware and software originally developed for military use, specifically data compression algorithms and large-capacity storage devices. His next-door neighbor was a retired engineer who had worked on the Sidewinder missile program. This neighbor bought Baxter a subscription to Aviation Week magazine, provoking his interest in additional military-oriented publications and missile defense systems in particular. He became self-taught in this area, and at one point wrote a five-page paper that proposed converting the ship-based anti-aircraft Aegis missile into a rudimentary missile defense system. He gave the paper to California Republican Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, and his career as a defense consultant began.
Backed by several influential Capitol Hill lawmakers, Baxter received a series of security clearances so he could work with classified information. In 1995, Pennsylvania Republican Congressman Curt Weldon, then the chairman of the House Military Research and Development Subcommittee, nominated Baxter to chair the Civilian Advisory Board for Ballistic Missile Defense.
Baxter's work with that panel led to consulting contracts with the Pentagon's Missile Defense Agency and National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. He consults for the US Department of Defense and the US intelligence community, as well as defense-oriented manufacturers such as Science Applications International Corporation, Northrop Grumman Corp., General Dynamics, and General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Inc. He has said his unconventional approach to thinking about terrorism, tied to his interest in technology, is a major reason the government sought his assistance.
"We thought turntables were for playing records until rappers began to use them as instruments, and we thought airplanes were for carrying passengers until terrorists realized they could be used as missiles," Baxter has said. "My big thing is to look at existing technologies and try to see other ways they can be used, which happens in music all the time and happens to be what terrorists are incredibly good at."
Baxter has also appeared in public debates and as a guest on CNN and Fox News Channel advocating missile defense. He served as a national spokesman for Americans for Missile Defense, a coalition of organizations devoted to the issue.
In 2000, Baxter considered challenging Representative Brad Sherman for the 24th Congressional District seat in California before deciding not to run.
In April 2005, he joined the NASA Exploration Systems Advisory Committee.
Baxter was a member of an independent study group that produced the Civil Applications Committee Blue Ribbon Study recommending an increased domestic role for US spy satellites in September 2005. This study was first reported by The Wall Street Journal on August 15, 2007. He is listed as "Senior Thinker and Raconteur" at the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, and is a Senior Fellow and Member of the Board of Regents at the Potomac Institute for Policy Studies.

Michael wasw not an original member of the Doobie Brothers, but was a solo artist and studio musician, until Steely Dan used him on a few recordings. He later (around the late 70s) became a member of the Doobies, and also continued to write, record, and perform as a solo artist. You might say he was a "Hired gun," Such a talented man. The guitar soloist, Jeff(Skunk) Baxter, also played on some of Steely Dan's records as a guitarist. He was also a studio musician, like McDonald. This Rock and Roll music stuff is so intermingled between Rock Bands. Everyone knows everyone else, and oftewn sit in and play on each other's albums, without any formal or legal credits, listed on the album. That was a very common thing. That's how The Traveling Wilburys got started.
Skunk Baxter also has a very interesting "side business". He is (was?) a consultant for missile defense.

Love that blue eyed soul singing from Michael and yes he can play those keyboards as well. I love his unique voice and can hit those high notes but stay mellow to belting out that soulful voice. He has long since left the band andhas done soli as well as being a sought after singer in duets with Pattie LaBelle Kenny Loggins and more. He has massive talent.

I remember back in the 70's I was in high school and walking into playback electronics, a hifi store, back then there were hifi stores everywhere,and there blasting through a pair of BIC venturi speakers was this song.I may be the only person in the world who thinks of those speaker when I hear this song.

Amazing song. No, don't think the studio version had a choir. The Doobs have some amazing singers that can do that. From this album of the same name, Tiran Porter's (bass, background vox) first lead vocal is on here called "For Someone Special" which was a tribute to Tom Johnston, one of the founding members and lead vocalist for The Doobie Brothers. It's a beautiful and somewhat haunting song...but so gorgeous. Check it out, Harri. Tiran is one of the most underappreciated bass players. Awesome.

Churchy thing? Try "Jesus is Just Alright" by the Doobie Brothers. Very good song.
Doobies with Tom is a different Doobies with Michael, two different sounds, kinda like Chicago with Kath and without Kath was different. Michael has a very distinct voice so love both versions, sometimes Tom and if Michael is available, sing together in concerts. Chicago is still going but without Cetera and with Robert Lamm in the group.
