The song is written from the perspective of someone growing up amid poverty and despair in the inner city, addressed to an audience that has no idea what it's like to live there ("you don't know my kind in your world").
Micheal McDonald was a great addition to them, really can't go wrong with any of their songs. They rocked throughout their careers and still entertaining new generations to come.
This is so good. I love the opening line, " you don't know me but I'm your brother" YES! I'd love you to do the live in concert of this song. Also, Playing for Change, Listen to the music. Doobie Brothers early song, with Tom Johnston at the helm. Tom was the first lead singer until Michael stepped in in 1975
Big Soul Biz, this Doobie Brothers song is a wonderful fusion of funk/soul and jazz played by a great set of musicians and the amazing vocals of Michael McDonald. The Beat and Soul Singing takes this tune to a whole new level. Great reaction Biz, always love your views on music.
They did this as the encore at a show I went to. City and venue had a curfew. They shut the stage lights off, turned the main lights on, but the Brothers kept playing and the crowd kept singing!
Once again what a fun reaction. I can't remember if you've already done China Grove by the Doobs, but if not definitely and also Blackwater is one of their greatest songs ever and it's actually from one of their earlier albums. It was on the radio constantly when I was in grade school and I could never get enough of it.
There’s basically 2 camps with the Doobie’s The first 5 albums with Tom Johnston lead vocals/ guitar. He unfortunately had some severe health issues at the time and they needed a new lead vocalist. Enter Michael McDonald vocals/keyboards from Steely Dan He was much more soulful than Tom who was more of a rocker. I personally prefer the Tom Johnston area, a bit more diverse in there style
I really dig this song. That being said, my favorite Dobbie Brothers work is their earlier stuff. After Michael McDonald came into the scene, it started getting more commercial. ❤️✌️
They take us to church on that one! One of my favorite Doobie Brothers songs. Saw them do this live and Michael went crazy on the keys. The bass work and sax were also amazing.
Ken, there's a whole school of folks who prefer the early Doobs than the MM era. With all due respect, you can't possibly say that this song doesn't rock as much or more than their early stuff. As for the argument that they became more commercial, that just doesn't hold water. I believe the main difference is: early Doobs = laid-back country style rock, MM Doobs = more soulful & funky. As you said, just depends on your musical tastes.
Biz! It’s your pest commenter again! You call them the Doobs! That is what we use to call them back in the late 70’s growing up . Now we also Smoked many Doobies back in the late 70’s listening to the Doobs!
It doesn't matter who is singing, Tom J. or Michael Mc, The Doobies are a killer band and we all groove to them.
Thank you ..stop the "who is better and when ".they are The Doobies .......Peace and Love
Finally, someone reacted to the studio version of this classic! Tiran Porter is just killing it on the bass ❤! One of my favorite songs of all time!

You just reacted the same way we did 50 years ago. Well done young man.
Love to see the joy and smile people have when they listen to the 70s!❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤ Feel good music!
The Doobie Brothers and Michael Macdonald taking you to church. Nothing better.
They lived up the hill in the Santa Cruz Mts in 70s and would occasionally play at local schools around the area (before MM joined).
With Michael McDonalds voice and that crazy bass and sax it is a beautiful song . The Doobies are my favorite band.
A personal favorite, relevant today. Add, “Another Sunday In The Park,” and a dozen others from this hit machine.
Bass. It is all about that bass.
Gotta Love Tiran Porter ❤

One of the grooviest calls to protest!
I love this band so much, both before Michael McDonald and with him. I think McDonald and Tom Johnston are both in the band now.
If you ain't movin to this tune, call the coroner

Just saw them on their 50th and they still sound spot on. So many great tunes! GREAT review.
The whole Captain and Me album is FIRE.
They did this as the encore at a show I went to. City and venue had a curfew. They shut the stage lights off, turned the main lights on, but the Brothers kept playing and the crowd kept singing!
please watch their LIVE 1977 version...all of them just killing it.

Mike MacDonald is my Huckleberry. Have you seen his duet with Patty Labelle? Yes, it's that good. 😊 "On My Own"
Great tune Biz!
I'm really not a fan of MM to commercial. The early stuff really rocked. Don't get me wrong these song's r good just a personal preference.

Another tasty bass part!
My favorite with Michael McDonald on lead!
Good one. Check out Another Park, Another Sunday
With a number of live performances of this song available, why would anyone not take advantage of that?
Cornelius bumpus sax
You just went to Church
