HEY MIKE - I HOPE THIS HELPS! MCDONALD IS PLAYING Fm6/G then F/G then C/G then D7/G then G7sus/G ON THAT YAMAHA CP-70 AND REPEATS IT ALL THE WAY TO THE BRIDGE! AND AS YOU KNOW THIS IS THE SAME PROGRESSION MCDONALD PLAYS DURING BAXTER'S SIZZLING SOLO! AT THE 21:19 MARK OF YOUR VIDEO HERE, IF YOU FREEZE IT, I'M THE BIG TEENAGE HEAD WITH A MOUTHFUL OF BRACES CLOSEST TO THE UPPER RIGHT CORNER OF THE FRAME! I WAS AT THIS SHOW IN CHICAGO AT THE WTTW-TV STUDIO'S TAPING OF THIS FALL OF 1977 SOUNDSTAGE EPISODE! MY COUSIN JACK IS THE DUDE NEXT TO ME WITH THE BOB ROSS WHITEGUY AFRO BECAUSE HE WORKED AT WTTW IN ACCOUNTING AND INVITED ME TO THIS SHOW AND IT CHANGED MY LIFE FOREVER! AMEN FOR THAT! KEEP ON GROOVING MIKE! THANX FOR ALL YOUR ENERGY, REID
Hey, that was me with the 'right hand is what you know, left hand is who you are' comment. Thanks for the shout out! I recall I said it first on a live stream. I forget where I heard it, but I am certainly not the originator. Great video.
I grew up on the Doobies and the are way underrated… The band was smoking during this period. Of course my favorite album by them is Minute By Minute…. But they had a bunch of hits. They were a real band. Michael McDonald is unbelievable…Enjoyed seeing you go thru the process…. That was very instructive. Thanks bro…
This is not an easy song to pull off. This is also a live version and skunk is playing some crazy shit I never heard in the recorded version . I commend you for taking this one on.
I've been following the Double Brothers from the beginning and through all their phases. Killer band. Skunk can play some guitar. Hope you had a good time at Ram's Head. Upper downtown Baltimore!!!!!!!
Great job Michael, loved the insight, just followed along with you and now have it (...kinda). The Doobies are one of those bands where you always think, that doesn’t sound too tricky...and then you try and realise again they are masterful composers and unbelievable instrumentalists. They’re a band that every player could rip whenever they want to but they just know what the music needs. Anyway, thanks again Michael!
Baxter was and is phenomenal, and that energy has always been great. You can hear it on those early Steely Dan records. The band was marvelous musicianship, wasn't it?
Dude, I crack myself up every time I'm watching you do these vids! Again--I know NOTHING about music theory, but I know harmony. So, I'm yelling at the screen as you are finding your way through this jam, clapping and so happy as u iron the stuff out lol Especially when u caught the part at 8:49 hahaha I was rooting for you to catch it! I don't know about you, but a huge weight lifted from my shoulders at that point lol no idea why! love the content man!
I spent time on the Takin' It To the Streets refrain and finally chose (because it kind of is a choice!) to put in the passing chord of an "F-less" Fmi6/F# (or F#9,+5, +11 or Csus2, +5/F#)) in between the F chord and the C/G final chord of the cadence. I hear a chromatic bass run from E to G, so on strings 6, 4, 3 and 2... C7/E (E, E, Bb, C), F (F, F, A, C), F#9+5+11 (F#, D, G#, C), C/G (G, E, G, C). Try it.
So enjoyable to watch you break it down. I'm not a guitarist and I know pretty much nothing about music theory, but I love the Doobies and that jazz-rock groove. So fun.
I saw Skunk play at the last live Sweetwater Gearfest. It wasn't a full concert, but he played some of his most famous songs. Danny Kortchmar joined with Skunk for the show and Q&A session. Talk about studio aces! Yow! I also saw Greg Koch, Eric Johnson, and Billy Sheehan that day. Amazing stuff.
How cool a show to see! This performance is phenomenal. Michael McDonald is just ridiculous. The entire band...real musicians. No net. Loved the journey through the chords. Learned the basics of this on keys 20 years back...the minor to major was an eye opener and such a cool sound.
This is probably the worst thing I could say to a guitar instructor: I have never taken a single lesson. Chords came easy to me, but I still have yet to learn actual lead guitar skills... Anyway, thanks for posting this! Subscribed. 👍
Wow. Time capsule stuff here. No lie. Back on the Road in 1977 the Doobie Bros. Very first Concert, very first concert t-shirt. I had no idea Tom Johnston had left the band and Michael McDonald came in. I still remember Skunk on that stool moving like a crazy man. LA Forum in the nose bleeds 16 years old and hooked on live music from then on. Love your style Michael. Love your channel.
That album was such a huge part of my childhood. I was in 9th grade and my friend and I were spending so many days trying to make gas powered airplanes that we could fly on a wire. I'll never forget that summer, my friendship, the songs that hit the radio, or how our planes hit the asphalt on their first flight.
Man, your video popped up, and I think your almost falling of the chair thing was so funny and natural that I continued watching. I really like the way you bring this, keep it up. If I can help you out around the 12’ mark in your video, the chorus that is. It’s going to sound weird, but it’s actually Eb/E(natural) Dm/F to C7/G with F# in the bass between those last 2. It’s a typical Gospel thing. I hope this helps. Regards, JohanGuitarMan.
Michael, I like the Ddim at the 5th fret (x5676x), then the sus to the C, then x3453x followed by x3353x, works pretty good. It's all descending and suspending, lots of ways to do it because it's really a piano song. Lots of cool chords... 🙂
A lot of old guys I talk to hate on Michael McDonald, but his songs were always my favorite doobie bros tunes. His chords and melodies are just killer smart. This verse vocal melody is just incredible to me.
Yo michael, were you in the dominican republic at an all inclusive resort a few months ago? I was on vacay and swear I saw you at the beach lol. Love ur content man!
Nice job, Michael! Repetitive and funky as hell, but not easy with those inversions and minor to major moves. McDonald is touring with the Doobies for their 50th anniversary this year and I’m trying to find a way to go without skipping meals to pay for it haha
McDonald changed them to a piano band, and Baxter was all over the place. Johnson, Simmons and McAfee ARE the doobies, underrated musicians, TJ is the voice of the doobies. In June at Charlotte will be my 29th time I've seen them live. I'll tolerate McDonald.....again
I stopped about 5 minutes in I said na this easy and looked up the chords 10 minutes later I came back hoping you could make some sense out of this madness 😄 🤣 😂 😆
I can't really be the first can I?...Not finished yet, but will be doing so after work. Great choice here Michael. One of theirs/Mr Baxter's I'd love to hear you have a go at is the lead on "How do the fools survive?" Sublime bit of guitar IMHO Keep it up. :) Pete UK
BAXTER SHINES SO BRIGHTLY HERE IT IS MUSICALLY THRILLING TO HEAR ALL THE GUITARCRAFT IN SUCH A SHORT BUT SWEET SOLO THAT NEVER LOSES IT'S DIAMONDSPARKLE THAT JUST GETS BETTER WITH EACH LISTEN! BERNIE CHIARAVALLE ON GUITAR WITH MICHAEL MCDONALD DOING "HIGHER GROUND" IN 1993 RIGHT HERE - ruclips.net/video/OFHN5hehWeI/видео.html JUST SOME AMAZING GUITARCRAFT FROM BERNIE! THE LATE CHUCK SABATINO ON STELLAR KEYBOARDS & VOCALS IN THE BACK AS WELL! A CLASSIC STEVIE WONDER TUNE STILL GETTING OUT THE WORD!!! THANX FOR YOUR PASSION AGAIN PROFESSOR PALMISANO! REID
G'day mate, I reckon you'd really like the harlequin dream album by boy and bear, especially the songs southern sun and old town blues, they're an australian indie rock band... check them out!
Skunk and Michael MacDonald were regulars with Steely Dan- enough said. Great to see Michael MacDonald showcasing his piano work- my god what a musical force.
If you're a Skunk Baxter fan - then "In France the kiss on main street" from Joni Mitchell's "Hissing of Summer Lawns" album is a must listen track ... ruclips.net/video/sEgcHrbyTgk/видео.html And or contrast in playing styles there's a RUclips video with Jaco and Pat Metheny backing Joni Live ruclips.net/video/Xgjdm5qXTX4/видео.html
I so love Skunk's solo. This appearance is on a PBS Soundstage as I recall. Supposedly there is a similar one on an SNL episode that I once had on Amazon video and lost. Also a "bootleg" from the Rainbow in London as it too. Much better than the sax solo IMO.
Doobies...Gino Vannelli...America...Toto....Wild Cherry....The Eagles....Steely Dan....Christoper Cross etc...the amazing sound of West Coast AOR .
×××W×
So good.

Call me an old man but Music doesn’t have this kind of fire and genuine emotional expression anymore.
You may be old, but you are correct.
Check out my original music, I keep the vibe alive 😊

This is my favorite Doobies song.. LOVE Michael McDonalds voice. Of course the whole band was incredibly talented.. Thanks for the vid!!

Your facial expressions validated that I was not crazy with what I was hearing! Straight 🔥
That ending was ridiculous
Tiran Porter was one of the best bass players in the game. Listen to his parts. They are incredibly hard
I saw 'Skunk' doing a clinic for Roland back in the late 80's, informal with a little band, sheer magic.
I've been following the Double Brothers from the beginning and through all their phases. Killer band. Skunk can play some guitar. Hope you had a good time at Ram's Head. Upper downtown Baltimore!!!!!!!

Lol!!! Man sometimes it’s hard!!
THe Doobies are out of this world...
Listen to the music! My fav dancing song at the pub growing up ( was I under age?)
Musical genius on every level. Great video and breakdown MP. 🎸🎸
“take it to the bank”….no, Michael…takin’ it to the streets🤪. Excellent breakdown as usual👍🏼
I spent time on the Takin' It To the Streets refrain and finally chose (because it kind of is a choice!) to put in the passing chord of an "F-less" Fmi6/F# (or F#9,+5, +11 or Csus2, +5/F#)) in between the F chord and the C/G final chord of the cadence. lol I love the yell for the top hat boy
Thank you Michael for your effort

I love your vídeos man, they’re so fun to watch!
one of the best voices in music history!!
Loved this video you are so honest and unassuming…….thank you
Thanks andrew!
@@Guitargate ps it’s also a great song and I had no idea how good they are live

Mr. BAXTER is kind of a rocket scientist in real life....
Grew up with the local Doobie Brothers. Nice to see them showcased on your YT channel.
Right on brother! Excellent choice!
Most could never understand the level of Musicianship here 🎉😂- Mike plays for keeps ✅
Great job! You have great skill and astute knowledge. And it’s obvious you just enjoy a good jam. How can anyone not dig this classic Doobies tune!!??
Killed it again! This one was a blast 👍
This is probably the worst thing I could say to a guitar instructor: I have never taken a single lesson. Chords came easy to me, but I still have yet to learn actual lead guitar skills...

Michael McDonald is a national treasure for all toi learn from and enjoy!

Keep the melody on top (G F E)
Great tune. My favorite Skunk solo is on How do the Fools Survive - You should check it out. Lots of cool diminished stuff disguised in it
Wow that is a Fm in there. Thanks. Baffled me for years.
Mike you that dude…. Love the breakdowns 👍🏾
I saw the 77 tour at Reading Rock in the UK.
Excellent!! ♡♡♡♡
My college days in Montreal Canada in my late 50's and just want to dance every time Doobie brothers or Michael McDonald comes on

Great break down saw them in Boston with Thin Lizzy at the Orpheum theater 1977 maybe 76.I was 13 me and the boys partied with all the old bikers.
They got a kick out of us we were better supplied than most around us.
You know about "Alip ba ta",teacher?Alip is a very talented finger style guitarist on RUclips}

Michael McDonald has dark hair! Wow were these guys good! The soundtrack of my life includes many doobies songs! ❤️😎
12:57 Doobie Brother Deliverance.
I always tell my wife if I could sing, I'd want to sing like Michael McDonald.
McD sounds like he has an electric piano/grand piano mix during that gospel ending?
Totally
KILLER, YES, KILLER. 💕🙋🎶🔥
I just got the Kermit thing!
Nuts

Dont beat yourself up.. he's Jeff Skunk Baxter!!
I stopped about 5 minutes in I said na this easy and looked up the chords 10 minutes later I came back hoping you could make some sense out of this madness 😄 🤣 😂 😆
Put stainless frets in that PRS.

ok, 2nd will do
You are a cutie...great video analyzing an amazing performance!
Michael please react to some older Jimmy herring in his work with jazz is dead or aquarium rescue unit cause those are the jam super groups fr
what you're attempting is the most difficult thing a player can try. These chords are not basic R&R. You do a great job at this.

2 drummers
Do incubus, billy talent, or tragically hip great live bands
To bad Tom Johnson left the band.

MM…mush mouth. Sounds ok as a back-up vocal but as a lead he makes me change the radio.
Unwatchable..... not even finding the guitar positions
