@@bekind6763 The early 80s was a extension of the 70s when we would have bands and fell in love with music. The late 80s had so much over produced music that lost the depth of what had gone before. The 90s sucked.

I have one of those older "compilation albums" of late 70's/early 80's hits on CD, with all different acts as a variety pack.... and Michael McDonald is on there THREE, yes 3 times, backing up other acts. He's on with Steely Dan with "Peg", Kenny Loggins' "This is it", and with the Doobies I think or his own single at the time. He sounds like a saxophone has come to life.

So many bands in the 70s had the quality of musicianship that still holds out today. Boston, Chicago, Bachman Turner, Stevie Wonder, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Yes, Genesis, Jethro Tull, were all bands full of musicians who only played what the song needed. They stayed musicians and didnt turn into Rock Stars and they all had great backup vocals. What always shocks me is how they were able to take all these people on tour They had extensive lineups when the average was 4 dudes, Yes had maybe 20 musicians. They had extra drumsets and pianos that all had to be moved by extra roadies. All this awesome music and this is just the Rock side. There was Quality Pop Music Rythym & Blues and of course Country Music had ton of Quality bands. All of the Doobie Brothers music was uplifting and made You Happy. We were truly the luckiest generation to have all that great music and great friends
Musicians of this caliber were common in the 70’s and I think we took their greatness for granted because of the abundance of exceptional musicians. Crowd expectations were very high and the bands didn’t disappoint their fans. I was fortunate to have attended the 1979 Mississippi River Festival and saw many great bands that weekend…The Doobie Brothers, The Allman Brothers, Poco, Molly Hatchet…and so many more. Still listening to their music, as it never grows old.
"Skunk" Baxter is simply incredible. There is an old, but very cool, set of tutorial videos by him on RUclips covering a wide range of styles and genres.

The Doobies were named for a little thing we called a joint back then. I saw them play in 1989 and what a great Christmas band. They rocked, Fantastic can loved them. Keep Rocking brothers and sisters.

I saw the Doobies Brothers as a “sort of fan”. I knew and loved the music, but the surprise for me was the joy on Patrick Simmon’s face during the songs. He energized the crowd and brought an extra dimension to the night. Yes, I became a big fan after seeing the show! 😀
Doobie’s were on my list from a real young age. Michael McDonald did tons of session work as well. He really brought a new dimension to that band.

I met Michael McDonald in Santa Barbara in the 80s at a social event. Very very humble guy. I am a huge Doobies fan, he seemed very shy so I told him "you look so familiar". His response "Have you heard of the Doobie Brothers?" Great guy

I've always considered The Doobie Brother's/Steely Dan both the cream of the crop elite musicians of their time. Absolutely professionals at their craft!! From 1975-1980 you could not listen to the radio for longer than a half hour without one of these 2 bands being played. At the end of the day, that's your goal and job...GREAT VIDEO!!

Michael McDonald broadened their audience by orders of magnitude, and assured their immortality in the greater musical pantheon. He has said he never wanted to hog all the attention, but rather add to the mix in a meaningful way. Decades later, the Tom Johnston-era has dovetailed seamlessly with the Michael McDonald era in an organic way. The band's legacy is secure and asserting Michael McDonald in any way "ruined" them is simply erroneous.
Music was so great back then. Such a team effort with talent from all sides. 👍👍👍 They just put you in a good mood

What is really sad it the Doobie Brothers did not make it into the Rock n Roll of Fame until this year. What a colossal blunder.
Its not really "musicianship".. As there are plenty of great musicians now, the problem is the soul of creating music as a group in that environment is gone.. My Father was a Roadie for the Doobs for this show and from 76-79'. I was only 5-8 years old during that time and the amazing stories he had of them in the creation process is what stuck with me. Endless innovation and improvisation between some of the best musicians, and when you have that time to create as a group, without the electronics over-taking that creative process, this is what you get.. Pure feel and soul in your music and playing. Now, its all about your image and making as much money as possible and the music sits to the side.
Just love them so much. I am overwhelmed by their brilliance. Saw them last year, and they KILLED IT!

Frank Oshields - Yes. I live about three hours from the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Museum in Cleveland and have visited it two or three times. Neat place but I have a lot of issues with the voting body that pontificates “what people should like”... I have similar issues with the “Greatest ever” lists put out by Rolling Stone Magazine Which is joined at the hip with The Hall. I do use their lists as a reference point but there are so many snubs. Even many artists that have been inducted after so very long. Even when they made Radiohead wait a year. That Jethro Tull and so many others aren’t in there is so telling. Rock is for the people so I try to look at it that way. To me The Hall is very elitist and the invitation only aspect of the induction ceremonies does annoy me. Some great performances but I’d like to see it open to the general population at Madison Square Garden at a reasonable price. Just my opinion but I think the Hall is kind of insulated and snobby. Also lesser known acts like NRBQ, Big Star and Elliott Smith should be in there if they were really so hip. King Crimson... MC5... How do they not get it?

I remember listening to "Black Water" and other songs such as "China Grove" which was the song I had to learn when I was told that I would have to be the guitarist for a new band, I was supposed to be the harmonica player. But this band launched me on my guitar playing back in 1978.
Legendary band, one of the best. When this came out I was graduating high school, don't remember the title of the album but I always enjoyed it with that big airliner. The Doobie liner!
Thanks, Phil. Great analysis as usual. The Doobies are one of the most iconic rock and roll bands to contribute to the genre's canon. I am always amazed at the range of their music, from straight Rock and Roll to R&B(and the influence of the wonderful Michael McDonald) to Country. I have seen them six times from '75 (with the great Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on the 6-string!)at college to the summer of 2019 at Bethel Woods and their sound through all those years is always fresh and tight. A truly great band that deserves its place in the Rock Hall of Fame. They will again be on tour this summer!
Michael and Doobie Brothers meeting when they did was a fortunate happening for both (and for us all) as Michael was at the onset of coming into his own and the DB’s were somewhat adrift with Tom’s sudden absence. McDonald stepped up and had a great collaborator in Patrick Simmons (a very underrated guy). Obviously, the Doobies were still a group of top flight musicians and Michael went through an incredible creative flourish during those years. I remember him saying he felt like a kid in a candy store when he started with them, realizing the talent of the surrounding members. I love both versions of the group and happy that he and Tom perform together.
I had never heard MM play piano in isolation like this before. Wow... and yeah "The Voice" is something truly spectacular.

When I was in college from 1970 to 1974 the DOOBIE BROTHERS were on every day somewhere when you walked on campus or if you went to any party! DOOBIES RULED back then! Great work FIL!

The Doobie Brothers, what a band! I love everything they have put out from the 60's on... "What A Fool Believes" is my all time favorite tune from them, always loved their harmonizing...Fil, a perfect analysis on this one.... Now, do any of you know what a Doobie is, i know you all do? Back in the day we all made mention of it, and we thought it was the coolest name for a band , i think he was on the Bill with Jimi Hendrix a few times, he loved them, and their type of music and style, the harmonizing, the key boards and piano, that added flavor to their talents, Jimi had a great ear for music, all genres... I decided to focus on the background shots of Skunk. What I noticed was his "stops"-in prefect time, and then a short lead break that is perfectly done and perfectly timed. On keyboard in that solo, Micheal puts in all but Bach, blues, jazz, country and all of it, and I might have missed a subtle Bach bit.
Forgot to add, this was, I think, the best review Pegasus ever did. He laid out the band, the music and their various contributions to their work that made it almost impossible not to get a great insight into it. Fine job.
Oh my goodness Fil, I just found this review. I don't know how I never saw it before, but I'm so glad that I did. Of course, I love the Doobies, but I equally enjoyed watching you while the video was playing because it was so obvious how much you liked it too. That make it even better. I'm so glad these videos are all living on line so that we can enjoy them for a long time.
fark.. replacement? MM OWNS every time he performs. godz, he has a VERY deep grip on chord progressions and songwriting. Then that voice... hollow, semi-raspy soulful and with RANGE. Man, with great players and singers.... AND songwriters... you are going to have to make it in the biz.

I love MM as well, but if Tom hadn't been sidelined with health issues. I think yhe Doobie Brothers would have kept on with a mostly hard driving rock, with the occasional departure courtesy of Pat Simmons, and still had a stellar run.
But it is amazing how they adapted to MM and his abilities.
I can appreciate Michael McDonald's undeniable talent yet I wasn't as interested in the Doobies when he came on board.
Almost seemed like a different band had emerged.
That said, where I really felt Michael completed a band's sound was when he was brought in on Steely Dan's Aja. Wouldn't have been the same without his stellar backing vocals.

Hey Fil, I was a young man of 22 years coming into the adult world in the Pacific Northwest USA ... I remember well when Michael McDonald joined with The Doobie Brothers. They were a tight rock n' roll band of that era ... but Michael brought that Steely Dan rock-jazz fusion to the band. Myself, I was never a fan of Steely Dan ... too esoteric for me, I guess. But his inclusion into The Doobies gave them, and those (like me) who liked them, a new breath of life. One hit single after another. I remember "Takin' It To The Streets," and also "It Keeps You Runnin'." Thanks for yet another great analysis.

I must say I’m taken back to the work of Leon Russell’s keyboard work with the that plummy, rich, gospel feel of this particular clip. Had the honour of being in the audience for two Leon live concerts some years ago. Absolutely magic! Not only is his style right up my alley with his wide range if influences, but he was a most gracious MC of sorts to a smattering of unknown talents that were off the charts bursting with talent which we otherwise might never had the opportunity to enjoy.
Through following his music entourage I grew to love Joe Cocker, Delaney and his sassy Bonnie Bramlett (who sang with the Ike & Tina Turner revue as possibly the only white woman ever to do so). A most distinctive voice.
Also Rita Coolidge, her sister Priscilla, her then husband, the legendary Booker T Jones, Claudia Linnear, Merry Clayton, and so many choice background singers.
Well I’ve rambled on enough already so if I may offer a few potential options for you to consider:

While a youngster growing up in Carolina to have been escorted to African American gospel church with a family friend who was also our famille’s beloved Help around our home. The poignant, raw, painful history revealed through those glorious voices and their passion draws me in magnetically.
As often the only pale face in the congregation those stirring occasions were an unforgettable experience that lingers on. To this day I’m often moved to tears by The Power of those voices and that style.

It’s amazing how Micheal came into the band. I’ve worked for a cruise lines before and the steel pan/steel drum player of the Caribbean band on board was ill and had to go home. And there was a young lady from the Caribbean who was working In another department on the ship had that skill plus singing And she automatically became a member of that band. #Howamazing.
A big fan of the Doobies since the 70s, even before Michael McDonald joined them. Back then it was Tom Johnston who was lead vocalist, guitarist and song writer and was just as talented as McDonald. MM brought a different, more soulful sound to the band when he joined, but both lineups were fantastic imo, with Johnston a bit more rock oriented. The vocal harmonies of both lineups were just as fantastic imo.
I am going to reveal my age, yet again, I attended a Doobie Bros concert in '77 and it blew us all away, Jeff Baxter was there sitting in his chair and putting shit on Aussie beer. We couldn't work out where their back-line amps were, they always concealed them and put the whole band through their enormously powerful front-of-house P.A-which was ahead of its time, or an indication they had a lot of financial backing!

Another great track. I remember buying Minute By Minute with What A Fool Believes, which is still a favourite song of mine, and being so surprised with the new line up. I love the Doobies with both line ups. Certainly Toulouse Street. Cheers again with your efforts.
That was a fun performance to watch. I remember playing the Doobie Bro’s repeatedly on a road trip with friends in the 80’s. Whenever I recall that road trip the DB’s come to mind.

The Doobie Brothers are another great San Francisco Bay Area Band! they had a good line up of musicians over the years. my sister saw them in 1975 She said they put on a great show. thanks for Rockin' down the internet highway night after night so we can listen to the music. another great analysis and break down Fil.

I graduated from high school in 1970. Watching bands start in the 60's as a teen and following them (and new ones) progress into the 70's with their music was great listening. Going to Tower Records and bumping into someone like Elton John while he wa in Seattle is a special memory. Does anyone remember the old music booths where you could go in and listen to a record???

Doobie Brothers sound today just as fresh as they did back then - timeless, and I’m always playing their unique music :) To me, they are an excellent gateway into Jazz with strong influences from Blues and Gospel. Also, I should imagine their music is challenging(very), to learn and play? As always - great video, thanks.

Another excellent analysis Fil. You don’t even need to say anything when you see something you like and impresses. You break into a smile and it’s very evident how you feel. I was fortunate enough to grow up listening to the Doobie Brothers, Yes, the Moody Blues, ELO, the Eagles and so many other outstanding groups. It is a testament to their musicianship and writing skills that my kids still prefer classic rock to almost anything modern. I tell them that this was the soundtrack of my youth.
Finally Doobies in the Rocking Roll Hall of Fame its about time!!!!!!!
Great job fil skunk Baxter one of the best guitarists I've ever seen. did some great work with Steely Dan. and also that gospel piano Michael played at the end was spot-on truly one of the great bands who could play in many styles. From southern-style Rock to Detroit Blues. I can tell you were and still are a big fan.
Michael’s from my home town-St. Louis, MO. First concert-Doobie Brothers at the Mississippi River Festival. Tons of fun except that part were it was raining and we couldn’t find our car! Love Michael’s voice, all talented musicians. Thanks so much covering them Fil. ❤️😀
Had Doobie Brothers going in the house all the time when my children were babies. I played Doobies in the office when they were older. and not a soul complained ever. When my kids were grown up and gone, I was a sub teacher at the local high school and to my great delight....the kids in the art dept had Doobies going all day, non stop. Road trip from Los Angeles to Seattle...Doobie Brothers all the way. LOVE your reaction Wings!! Thanks!!

Michael McDonald is such a talent. A little trivia, he co-wrote Van Halen's "I'll Wait" from their 1984 album. He also sang the word 'Peg' on Steely Dan's "Peg."
The Doobies are one of my top 5 favorites. Along with Allman Bros, Steppenwolf, Zz Top, Lynard Skynard.

I love the tonal quality of the electronic equipment they used. Tubes? Old School microphones? (Dynamic...non-condenser?)
Oh, and thankfully, Autotune didn't exist back then, but in reality, it would have taken away from his human quality.
He is a superb vocalist.
The Doobies in all the incarnations are always a treat to see and listen to. One of the all time great bands.
