70 year old, white woman here… Not only did I love Sly and the Family Stone, but I loved that we really didn't think anything of an integrated band. Back in those days, everybody just kind of partied with everybody else. Those were the days. Thanks Sly. ❤️

Old white woman here. Was in the 5th grade when this came out. Our teacher would let us dance to rock music instead of going outside at recess. We could bring our records and she would play one or two tracks per album. When I bought this one in she played the whole thing. We loved it! This was during the time schools were being integrated in our community of North Carolina. Up until that time my school had been all white. There were only a handful of African American kids for the first time that year. The teacher and students of that class were all white. Two years later in Jr. High for the first time the new school was completely integrated. The song was still popular. There were quite a few songs about peace, love, and harmony in pop/rock music at the time. Not sure if the grown folks were getting all the lyrics bet we teenage wanna-be-hippies got it. Enjoyed your reaction!

Brother, it was a "live and let live" era. Black or white, male or female, the music made us all the same. Like Sly himself said, "different strokes for different folks". It was a generation that was all about coming together and uniting, regardless of our differences. Now it's all about division and polarization. We came so close and now we seem a million miles away. It was much better being 20 in the '70s than 70 in the '20s.

Hey Mugnify!! You should check out Sly and the Family Stone's performance at Woodstock!! And react to it with us, of course! They're one of the highlighted bands in the movie about Woodstock! It was fire! And also Janis Joplin singing "Work Me Lord " at Woodstock! She had waited 10 hours to go on-stage after arriving by helicopter in the morning, and was high as a Georgia pine by the time she finally performed, and she didn't like her performance that night she later said. But it's probably my favorite, because you can feel every word of that song as she sings it! 💃🎵🎶🎸🎹

What was amaazing about the music from late 60s is that the youth genereation and many of the artists who were younger than any previous era's celebrities literally thought that their music could change the world --- hence, the lyrics. What's even more wonderful is that during that time period, music did change the world for the better, at least temporarily. Amazing album to hear: Stand -- by Sly. Many of these songs were performed at Woodstock, especially "Higher." It's in the film.

This concert video footage provides a good sample of Sly And The Family Stone’s biggest hits, and is a good example of why the group is an inductee in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.
The group performed at Woodstock in 1969, reportedly at 4:00 AM in the morning. But the band put on a great show. Only one of their songs (to my knowledge) was filmed for the documentary film, but the entire audio recording of their 50-minute set is available for listening to here on RUclips.

You noticed the subtleties of the culture back then. I was a kid in a working class neighborhood in the late 60s and early 70s and what I remember, as a society, was that it was not cool to act a fool in public. People behaved much differently in public back then than today. People talked and no parent wanted to be known for their bad children, so behaving in public was very important. Embarrassing your parents in public was really bad. Not everyone behaved in public, but most people did. Protests were a different thing, but for everyday being in public, people mostly behaved. It was important to look nice when you went out in public. Going to church we had to dress nice. Nobody wore jeans to church. Going to a nicer restaurant, I remember having to wear my nice corduroy pants and tucked in shirt. We flew on an airplane one time and everyone was dressed nice.
In this video, even on stage everyone was cool and didn't cause any problems. When they were back in the audience, they sat or stood in their places and enjoyed the show without being disruptive or acting a fool. The audience also dressed nice. Nobody was in just a t-shirt and jeans. Things were changing in the mid to late 70s and people were starting not to care what "other people" thought anymore, but in the late 60s there was still a higher expectation of how to behave in public.

Back in the day, Sly was a contender for the coolest performer around. Burned very bright and then burned out. Dealing with the music business and the steady supply of drugs pretty much killed the cohesiveness and personal relationships. But the material endures. This stuff is still great to hear again. Great groove. Now you got me wanting to hear more.
This was a time when we were sick and tired of the prejudice that was rooted in society. The 60s saw great racial turmoil in the streets. In a way, the Beatles started the trend in 1964 when they came over from Britain to tour and refused to play segregated audiences. This ruffled the feathers of the 'establishment' and promoters, but it was either do what the Beatles wanted or lose a lot of money. A good example is their video 'Hey Jude' when they had the entire audience get up to perform with them.
What you are basically looking at is a celebration of that. We were so happy to be able to break through these barriers and simply party with our fellow human beings. Sly had the same idea and it shows in the audience here. I really miss those days. But he was also hit with critics who thought he should get more Black and lose the other races in his band. It has been stated that Sly was essentially no longer enjoying the limelight. He just wanted to play his music.

Definitely one of those bands that are a national treasure...so many good hits, and such a good message of unity and brotherhood at a time where it was still a powderkeg issue. Much respect to them for stepping up and using their platform like this.

They do a fantastic performance on the Ed Sullivan Show too. Better sound, too! Sly and the Family Stone were from San Francisco and dressed like soul hippies!
They were also one of the highlights at Woodstock- it’s all on film!
They were a huge influence on Prince. He even collaborated with their great bass player- Larry Graham!

I went to a Canned Heat concert in 1970, and the concert was supposed to end at 11pm, but instead it went past midnite into like 1 am. people from the audience were partying on the stage with CANNED HEAT drinking wine and smoking up to the max!, no security, no cops, just a blast!

One of my top 10 favorite bands of all time. They had messages to hear and a great old time funk.

This is kind of a medley of some of their greatest hits. You need to listen to the whole songs. Awesome brand. They broke all the social norms back then. Male and female musicians of all races with a very mixed audience. They were showing that music is something that can bring the world together. I am so glad to see another generation discovering these tunes. Pass the baton, my young friend.

So glad you took a look and listen to Sly &the Family Stone… awesome band, awesome grooves. Bootsy Collins played bass for them eventually.
Please give a listen to “Family Affair” by Sly and Family.
Also, have you ever done a reaction piece on “I’m Not In Love” by 10cc?

TRUE STORY; my first concert ever, I was about 5 years old, which would have been 1972; my young parents and Uncle went to an outdoor music festival in upstate NY (we lived in the Bronx) towing me along, lol. What I distinctly remember was pouring rain, scary bathrooms, and LOVING Sly and the Family Stone!!! Next Sly songs: "If You Want Me To Stay" (incredible FUNK), "Family Affair" and "Hot Fun In The Summertime" (piece of it in this video). Such a fun reaction, Mug! ❤ Yes! 🔥

I was 12 years old in 1969. Listening to these songs on my 9V Transistor Radio tuned to WOKY AM Radio Milwaukee (we didn't have FM stations yet), but especially Hot Fun in the Summertime!!! Best summer memories. The song of my childhood!

Great reaction to a great perfomance of the ealy 1970's. You enjoyed it as much as we did back in the day. I got caught up in a near riot when Sly & Family were extremely late for a free concert they were giving in Grant Pk. in Chicago. Eventually officials canceled the concert when 30,000-50,000 teens got too unruly. I did finally get to see them live.💕
