Saw them every weekend in 1968. They were the 'house band' at the Electric Circus club on St. Marks Place, East Village. They were oustanding: unforgetable. In any set they combined Hard Rock, Soul R & B, San Fran Psychadelia, Funk, Gospel, Do Wop, Tribal African Chants and Big Band Jazz., fronted by messages of love and social spirituality. After Woodstock everybody caught on. Like Hendrix and Pink Floyd, Family Stone resonated in their own world... one-of-a-kind, pure musical genius!!
Damn I probably saw you there. I made the EC and the Fillmore East so many weekends during those days. Remember the Chambers Brothers performing there?
That's probably why i liked them back in 69 and 70's they knew how to share the music to the whole world which deeply sank into my soul.I'm not afraid to say that they were ahead of their time ! This group or this band call it what you will...integrated not just whites into the music but also many other races. These guys ARE the peacekeepers !!
"Different strokes for different folks; And so on, and so on, and shoo be doo bee doo bee: Ooh, sha sha! We got to live together . . . . I AM EVERYDAY PEOPLE!"
A born entertainer. His performance at Woodstock was in a class unto itself. There were a lot of musically talented acts on the Woodstock stage but, there weren't any who were better entertainers than S&FS.
Back in those days it was ok for white people to enjoy the music of black artists. In many ways the country was more integrated in the 70's than it is today.
The guitarist is Freddie Stone aka Fredrick Stewart the bass player is Larry Graham who later was in Graham Central Station. Today The Family Stone is touring again with 3 original Members. Cynthia Robinson and Jerry Martini(the horn section) and the drummer Greg Erric. No drama with them just good funky music.
D' funk was the direction of the true spirit, so frequently ignored and by those with none. So greatful to those who had it and presented it to the world. Some things just can't be faked.
The three best bands to have seen between the fall of 1969 to Spring of 1970 were Sly etc, The Who and the Rolling Stones. In my humble opinion all three were peaking as far as live performance goes.
this is the only video of these two songs, which was the same at woodstock but still not seen on any footage???!!!absolutely the best!!! i hope it stays here this time!
went to one of his concerts 1972 alvuquerque new mexico.and we sat in our seats and waited for what seemed an hour till they announced he could not perform tonite. He was too messed up on drugs. Sorry but that's life. I feel sorry for him. he was at the top of the world. He loved drugs more than his fans.
It does not matter that some members of the band are black and some are white, all that matters is that they are tight, what the hell is the matter with you, people that say things like that are a cancer to society and are the ones that prevent progress in ever single way, I love this funky music I just wish Sly was doing a little better than he is
Came here to see one of my all-time favorite bands and was appalled to read racist remarks. Sly & the Family Stone was a multi-racial band that appealed to virtually everyone. Music has no color. Wise up people, good & bad is not determined by the color of one's skin. I've been SCREWED by people whose skin color is the same as mine, and some of my best friends & heroes don't look exactly like me. When you become colorblind you become part of a bigger race, the human race. RACISM = IGNORANCE :^)
One of Sly's favorite quotes was "Don't Hate the Black, Don't Hate the White, if you get Bit, just Hate the Bite." - it made sense in the 60's and still makes sense today.;
I grew up with this band during its heyday. This is by a long shot not MOTOWN. This is CHUCK BERRY and LITTLE RICHARD on steroids and JAMES BROWN transfigured by Pentecostal religiosity. There's no shame in this game. The band invented and inverted and co-opoted pop musics.
Where was the sound on Larry’s bottom end??!! Shit!!!!!! Glad Rose got to front. Don’t like her in the back This combo song stole the show at Woodstock. I see I’m late to the party.
The beauty of this band is Sly even though he was the leader, always made sure that every band member had either a solo or a singing part or both in virtually every song they recorded. It was one of the most notable racially mixed bands and left a funky impression on my DNA.
@@toreckman8899 Also, Sly empowered Black women musicians like Cynthia and Rose to step out. I think these women helped groups like Fanny have the courage to work to be the best they could.
@@toreckman8899 I knew he had three kids, Sly Jr was Kathy Silva's son, Sylvyette and Novena were Cynthia's. They're in their 30's and 40's now, older than the performers in this show. Wow. Time flies.
hey the guy is musical genius today's musicians suck tho n have no real talent he is true musician today's singers n rappers suck smh can't play one instrument n lipsyncing smh pathetic

They OWNED Woodstock with this. Nothing better.
Probably the tightest and funkiest groove of the 60's ...they played this at Woodstock in 1969 and brought down the house
This is what its all about. This is music at its finest. Hand down. What a time to go up.
A huge part of Sly's band RIP Cynthia Robinson.
Rock In Peace - M'Lady.
I love this video. Sly had a lot of energy and could really put on a concert. WOW!!!
Great performance, fabulous dancing, Cynthia will be missed, RIP
First band I ever saw live in 1971! Loved them then, and love them still!
More juice, talent and funk than the law allows, so great to see a great band at what may have been the apex of their efforts. Astonishing!

Agreed, and friends who went said the same.
Absolutely amazing. They never failed to amaze me--not then, not now.

Great!!!!!!!
I missed this version of "Star search" 😉
My God what a performance!!!
Best rock group ever! Saw them every time that came to NYC...
Electric Circus shows were amazing and I know they played at a dance at Staples High School in Westport, CT. Heard they killed it.
Great innovative song! True genius!!!
This is as close as I have ever come to God. This is my church - my light, and my life.
WE FEEL THE SAME!!!

We need this kind of spirit in today's music.

- Sly Stone
Thank you for never forgetting.
@@bakercarl8518 That phrase has never left me.
Dumb statement
I'm about to cry how good this is.

I had such a crush on Cynthia Robinson
I was born in march and rockencided in 1971 i did dig it.
Thank Gawd we get to witness this.... rock on
The only thing I ever found "different" about Sly and The Family Stone was how such a hot woman could play such a hot trumpet!
Unmatched to this day
Ahm gonna add a lit'l git-tah! ...to make it EZ to move yo' feet!
"Trying my best to lay a funky sound, and I don't want to put nobody down."

Is that bass even plugged in?

What year is this
who was the host?
Fun video, but too bad the audio quality is so awful. You can't hear the bass at all. :-( I'm so glad I saw them live in concert in 1972!
How can those people in the back just sit there????
Chaperones
fuck yes
Where was the sound on Larry’s bottom end??!! Shit!!!!!!
