Dad has a great taste. And if you like golden era rap, you are bound to like soul and motown.. cause of the sampling of their parents music. Did you guys by any chance see the Love's Train performance by Silk Sonic? Same choreo style as Temptations, Four Tops, etc. A heartwarming throwback!

So arrangements like these are usually made to suit the ladies range. So I don't really get it.
And the didn't take it down a key. this is a fair bit higher than the original (which is in C) this arrangement is in D#/Eb which is a minor third higher (if u were implying something like she couldn't hit the high notes... it probably just sounded dull or less energetic in c)

Now, you must watch Soul Train. It was a dance show where they would have musical guests on an elevated stage and the audience would dance around them. The show focused on Black performers. It started as a local program in Chicago, hosted by the creator, Don Cornelius, around 1968, then became nationally syndicated in 1970 with its move to Los Angeles. It ran for over 35 years. Just search for any musical act at that time and they probably appeared on the show. My favorite performance out of the numerous great ones was Al Green singing 'Here I Am' with his arm in a sling because he had broken his wrist the day before his appearance. The show must go on!

Interesting story behind the performance of that last song. David Ruffin didn't like the way Diana Ross sang certain notes of "HIS" song in the rehearsals (apparently she changed it because she couldn't hit certain notes) but Barry Gordy insisted that she sang it in the way that made her comfortable. So him coming down seemingly to assist her is really him trying to "show her how it's done" 😂 David was a character

Keep in mind that in 1970, Diana Ross left, and the Supremes had 7 more top 40 hits without her between 1970 and 1977. Mary Wilson (Who is in the blonde wig) did many of the lead vocals in the 1974-1977 time period. However.. Mary did get a beautiful solo turn during THIS era on the Hollywood Palace in 1969. It was rumored that Berry Gordy was furious with David from this performance. Apparently David was upset that Diana was getting all this attention and grew frustrated that she was butchering his song. That’s why you see him begin to take over the song because she was struggling to hit the notes.

The venue of The Ed Sullivan Theater is the same theater on B'way(btw 53rd & 54th St.) in Manhattan that later became The "Late Show" with David Letterman and now "Stephen Colbert." I think the young fellow thought that the stage looked much bigger here cuz there was no desk that Ed Sullivan sat at with seats for his guests. Everyone from back-in-the-day, knew that Barry Gordy wanted Diana in the front because he felt that her voice was the most marketable for crossover at that time, rather than say, "Florence Ballard's" voice, who was deemed by many to have the most beautiful voice of the eventual trio. BTW, I must say, "I feel real OLD now that your son was talkin' about how unreal the set looked and couldn't believe that you lived through an era like this." -- Your dad is older than me kid! But you just made me feel like an "ancient artifact!!!" 🤨🙄

What Ed Sullivan was giving a short history lesson on the two groups. Paul Williams and Eddie Kendricks were in a trio called The Primes. Paul had an idea for a sister group and asked their manager at the time if he could put one together. So he first found Florence Ballard, who brought along Mary Wilson. Paul then found Diana Ross and brought her on along with his then girlfriend Betty McGlown. Eddie and Paul named them The Primettes. After no success, The Primes broke up and joined another group who was in search of a tenor snd and baritone, The Distants, which had Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Al Bryant. They renamed themselves The Elgins, but another group had that name, so a Motown employee suggested The Temptations. Meanwhile Florence, Mary and Diana signed to Motown and changed their name to The Supremes. The rest is history!

Yes this is great. Can’t compare these performances to current day late night. This show appeared in prime time- before 11pm on Sunday nights. Late night (Johnny Carson) were weeknights only, and their performers were on smaller stages much like Colbert and Kimmel, etc today. Ed Sullivan’s show was a variety show like your dad said, and these shows (like the Carol Burnett Show and Sonny and Cher) were designed to showcase the performances. Late night was mainly for the conversation.

The Temptations are known as a group with four lead singers. Technically, all five have recorded leads. This is a recording of the "Classic V Temptations: David Ruffin (Lead Tenor) and Eddie Kendricks (First Tenor lead). The other three are Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Paul Williams. The Tempts are in every musical Halls of Fame, and are still singing and recording today (2023).

I know that those words are from the biopic. Leon ad-libbed the script and those apocryphal words have had the same impact as scripture in the canon of the Temptations' history. I stand by what I said: "Everybody is coming to see Otis now." Most folk have NEVER seen the original Temptations anyway, since David Ruffin was not an original Temptation (he joined four years after the group signed with Motown).

Barry Gordy did Florence Ballard who founded The Supremes wrong.
One of the reasons he got rid of Ballard was because she gain weight and he could not control her.
He made her work when she had pneumonia.
He constantly told her she needed to lose weight. That she was fat.
The only singer he cared about in the group was Diana Ross
Barry was sleeping around with Diana Ross
So of course he made her the lead singer
Florence died penniless, she had to get on food stamps
She died from a blood clot
The movie Dream Girls is loosely based on The Supremes

I was born in 65, so Ed Sullivan was around but my family lived in London; by the time I was old enough to form memories, and back in the states, it was in its last years. I grew up, glued to the TV on certain nights, too! Wednesday night we were watching Sonny and Cher and The Tony Orlando and Dawn Rainbow Hour, after Sonny left their show. Then Donny and Marie and the Jackson's had a short season or two. Plus there was a slew of comedy-heavy shows that featured a musical act like Hee Haw for country music and the Carol Burnett Show would have coroners or the occasional pop star. The best, though, was Saturday afternoons: American Bandstand!

Okaayyyy... You kind of surprised me, when you even mentioned Tony Orlando & Dawn and didn't even mention "The Flip Wilson Show." ... just sayin' ^_^

The 60's were the greatest period for music and Motown was my favourite. The Supremes were my favourite group then and in my opinion are still the greatest girl group ever. And Diana Ross is still touring and selling out venues at almost 80 years old.

You should react to Erykah Badu Love of my Life Video for pops. Very important song/video for hip hop

Great choice! You must see two performances in which The Supremes do "You Can't Hurry Love" and "The Happening" on Ed Sullivan as well as The Temptations do "The Way You Do The Things You Do" (with Diana Ross) and "For Once In My Life" from their collective TCB special, in which Paul Williams takes the lead. As for Nina Simone, you must hear her "Love Me Or Leave Me", "To Be Young Gifted and Black" (live!) and "My Sweet Lord"/"Today is A Killer."

I thought I was the only one who saw a similarity between Diana Ross and Erykah Badu vocally. I also feel like Chante Moore reminds me a lot of Diana Ross and Diana reminds me of Eartha Kitt vocally. I feel like she has a lot of her mannerisms.

They open the doors for Erykah, Jill, Lauren, and Neyo to walk through. This was a time where to see a black person on TV was a big thing. Representation is very important to young children. Thanks for this review.
