People have always misunderstood the title of this song. At the time of this song's recording, many religious leaders thought rock was the music of the devil, and forbade their young followers to listen to it. Many people like me who had a beef with religious ORGANIZATIONS thought that the man Jesus had a wonderful message of love and peace. I always believed The Doobies were celebrating this while questioning the judgemental nature of many of his self-proclaimed followers.

I was lucky enough to see “Godspell” on Broadway. We lived near NYC back in the late 60’s - early 70’s and our dad took us to many plays. I also got to go see the original “Hair” (my brothers were too young). So many great memories!

If you get a chance you should check out their Live From The Greek concert in 1982. It was their farewell to their fans before they broke up. There are some fantastic performances.

Why should the Devil have all the good music?? I grew up in this era when this song was new. Believe me, it had an impact upon everybody in the 70's when this came out. This unexpected song had EVERYBODY singing about Jesus. I remember seeing The Doobies in Richmond Virginia, about 1972 or 1973. I'll never forget it. They ROCKED!! but they also respected the King of Kings. I highly respect them for that.
As others have suggested, a great follow up would be Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum. Interesting story regarding the singer of that track and the song. You may want to research it a little before reacting to it. Another track I always group with Jesus is Just Alright and Spirit in the Sky is Children of the Sun by Billy Thorpe. It really isn't at all similar; I think I may have just heard them all for the first time in the same summer or something. But, that is another one I would love to watch your reaction.

The Dobbie brothers seemed to have a lot of musicians come and go. I think they had two drummers. Maybe the first rock band to do that. Jesus is right on with me. Every thing in moderation.
Yes! I have been waiting for this one. One of my favorites. So, you were talking about the slow bridge. That is the big difference between the Doobies and all the other versions. Tiran Porter, the bass player came up with the idea of slowing the bridge down. But it was too high for him to sing, so Pat Simmons sang the lead on this.
Harri, I'm not a religious man but I love great music and I think your reactions are wonderful. You're a true good soul. I'm 54 and have listened to a boatload of music so far and am always searching for different stuff. The original was by The Art Reynolds Singers in 1966 as a gospel song. The Byrds did it in 1969 (Each of those versions is on youtube). The Doobies did it in 1972 and it had a similar arrangement to the Byrds but the Doobies put much more energy and funk to it.
The Byrds' drummer Gene Parsons was a session drummer during the original recording - he introduced the song to the band and they worked it into their live set well before their studio recording. I think their live version was much better, the studio version was influenced quite a bit by Terry Melcher. The Doobies' version is great, their vocal breakdown in the middle really sets theirs apart for me.

Personally, my favorite from the Doobies. No matter what my mood, put that on segueing in to Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves, and I'm in my happy place.

PS: I agree with everybody else here that Spirit in the Sky is another incredible song with heavy Christian elements, and should be listened to.
Harri, back around 1972-73, a new “Jesus movement” started when they published The Living Bible, which was written so teenagers could more easily understand what was in the scriptures. I was there. So, a lot of bands started releasing their “token” Jesus tunes. I wouldn’t read more into it than that. I hope that was helpful. Thanks for your reaction. Another great early Doobie’s classic. For something a bit different I recommend I Cheat The Hangman from their album entitled Stampede. This was the last album that they release before Michael McDonald joined the band and their sound went in a different direction. In fact Michael joined the band while they were on tour promoting Stampede because Tom Johnston came down with terrible stomach problems. 🔥🔥
Hi Harri, greetings from Texas! First want to say that I don’t see how anyone could watch any of your reactions and not enjoy themselves. You have such an easy-going manner, and obvious love of both life and music … and positive energy radiates from you. Add in the little laugh, (heh, heh) and you’ve got the total package! Really like your bright red background too. Sets you apart from any of the other reactors I have seen, and I’ve seen a lot. Anyway, I wanted to give you some background info on this song. I was a Freshman in high school when it came out and it was a very confusing/divisive song because it was at the time of a real push for evangelical outreach by many different church denominations and mostly by the younger generation. They were labeled “Jesus freaks“ by a good many of their counterparts, and most kids aren’t really into religion one way or the other at that stage in their life. So you can tell by the moniker “freaks”, that they were put down and ostracized for their outwardly-religious outreach and testifying. The confusing part comes in because just like you, we were not expecting a rock band named after a marijuana cigarette, to put out A song with such overtly - religious lyrics. So that covers the period of time that the Doobie Brothers released this song, however it is one of the few Doobie Brothers songs in their career that they did not actually write themselves. Here is some background on the earlier versions: This song has a long history with many incarnations. It was first recorded by the gospel group The Art Reynolds Singers on their 1966 album, Tellin' It Like It Is. The Byrds covered it in 1969 and released as a single on their album Ballad of Easy Rider, where it charted at #97. They turned the song into a rocker, with a faster tempo and prominent electric guitar (the original version was piano-based and acoustic). The Underground Sunshine - a psychedelic band - released their version one year later, but their version didn't reach the charts. In 1972 The Doobie Brothers recorded it for their album Toulouse Street; the single was released in February 1973 and reached #35, becoming the most popular version of the song. Their arrangement was based on The Byrds recording. It’s a testament to the popularity of the Doobie Brothers that it went that high on the charts. There are many popular songs that were an artist or band’s only real hit… the proverbial “one hit wonder“. So by looking ahead on Songfacts, you can tell if that is the case with what you are going to react to, so at the end you wouldn’t want to encourage people to send in other recommendations for the artist/band, because they would be at a loss or you would get something not as great quality as their hit. This time was just after, indeed was an extension of the "Flower Children" scene that began in the '60s, where many youths were finding their own genuinely sincere peaceful relationship with spirituality and each other. If only more had embraced it and more importantly, perpetuated it ardently enough that it would still be going now. We would be better off if it had.

When they got to China Grove, They had a Steamer Lane Breakdown. then they tried to Take Me In Your Arms. They were Dependin On You but WithOut You it was Dangerous. Another great early Doobie’s classic. For something a bit different I recommend I Cheat The Hangman from their album entitled Stampede. This was the last album that they release before Michael McDonald joined the band and their sound went in a different direction. In fact Michael joined the band while they were on tour promoting Stampede because Tom Johnston came down with terrible stomach problems. 🔥🔥

First want to say that I don’t see how anyone could watch any of your reactions and not enjoy themselves. You have such an easy-going manner, and obvious love of both life and music … and positive energy radiates from you. Add in the little laugh, (heh, heh) and you’ve got the total package! Really like your bright red background too. Sets you apart from any of the other reactors I have seen, and I’ve seen a lot.
Anyway, I wanted to give you some background info on this song. I was a Freshman in high school when it came out and it was a very confusing/divisive song because it was at the time of a real push for evangelical outreach by many different church denominations and mostly by the younger generation. They were labeled “Jesus freaks“ by a good many of their counterparts, and most kids aren’t really into religion one way or the other at that stage in their life. So you can tell by the moniker “freaks”, that they were put down and ostracized for their outwardly-religious outreach and testifying. The confusing part comes in because just like you, we were not expecting a rock band named after a marijuana cigarette, to put out A song with such overtly - religious lyrics.
So that covers the period of time that the Doobie Brothers released this song, however it is one of the few Doobie Brothers songs in their career that they did not actually write themselves. Here is some background on the earlier versions:
This song has a long history with many incarnations. It was first recorded by the gospel group The Art Reynolds Singers on their 1966 album, Tellin' It Like It Is. The Byrds covered it in 1969 and released as a single on their album Ballad of Easy Rider, where it charted at #97. They turned the song into a rocker, with a faster tempo and prominent electric guitar (the original version was piano-based and acoustic).
The Underground Sunshine - a psychedelic band - released their version one year later, but their version didn't reach the charts. In 1972 The Doobie Brothers recorded it for their album Toulouse Street; the single was released in February 1973 and reached #35, becoming the most popular version of the song. Their arrangement was based on The Byrds recording. It’s a testament to the popularity of the Doobie Brothers that it went that high on the charts.
In an interview, Tom Johnston, Who was the lead singer of the band at the time, gave this commentary about the relationship between them and the song:
This is a very spiritual song with a pretty clear message about loving Jesus. Very few mainstream hits are so unambiguously in praise of Jesus, and it was a very odd message coming from The Doobie Brothers. Johnston told Songfacts: "The funny thing about that, we weren't anti-religious. We weren't anything. We were just musicians out playing a gig. We didn't think about that kind of stuff very often. We would be out playing that song when that came out as a single, and all these One Wayers, which was a big movement at that time, would be at the show, and they would run up to the stage with their fingers pointed straight up. At first we didn't get it, and we finally said, 'Oh, I know what's going on.' So when we would play that song, they would go nuts. They would throw scriptures on the stage, that sort of thing. Little did they know they were trying to enlist the support of the wrong guys."
The history of the song and the comments by Tim Johnston I obtained from Songfacts.com which is a great database/research tool both on artists/bands and on individual songs. They have an app that would be handy to have on your phone. Especially if you might be reacting to a group you know nothing about, because it would still be an honest reaction. Just because you know something about the artist or group, doesn’t mean you have heard the song. You can simply say “I’ve read that this band… Etc. … and now we’re going to listen to this song that I’ve never heard before but it charted at #__.
There are many popular songs that were an artist or band’s only real hit… the proverbial “one hit wonder“. So by looking ahead on Songfacts, you can tell if that is the case with what you are going to react to, so at the end you wouldn’t want to encourage people to send in other recommendations for the artist/band, because they would be at a loss or you would get something not as great quality as their hit.
I think it also makes viewers happier when a reactor has at least heard of the group, even if you have just read about it. It’s sort of validates their love of the artist or group.

This time was just after, indeed was an extension of the "Flower Children" scene that began in the '60s, where many youths were finding their own genuinely sincere peaceful relationship with spirituality and each other. If only more had embraced it and more importantly, perpetuated it ardently enough that it would still be going now. We would be better off if it had.
