  • Moving update and time to give this dirty house that's full of mouse turds a deep clean! The Apple Orchard House had been vacant for two years so it was full of dead bugs, cobwebs, and disgusting splatters all over the floor. I cleaned as much as I could before moving day and now all my vintage furniture is in the house! My Dad and I (Mostly my Dad... haha!) made a closet organizer and clothing rod to go in my main closet so I can hang my clothes and my Mom helped me unpack boxes in my kitchen.
Please let me know in the comments what you think of the vintage map in my dining room with my colorful 60s and 70s furniture. Also if you have any tips on how to befriend a semi-feral cat I would love to hear them!

Deep cleaning my dirty vacant rental home was so exhausting but also very satisfying! I'm glad this old farmhouse is finally getting some love and that I can make it my own vintage space. Moving in was a challenge but I'm glad I had my parents to help and my Dad to build me a new closet organizer.

Honey, it's your living space. If you want to cover those maps then you should. I love that you wouldn't be destroying them though, just hiding them. Everyone has different taste and if you're not feeling it then don't force yourself to live with it. 😊

I think you should cover the map- if it doesn’t make you happy, go with your instinct! You’re going to make that house so lovely, it already looks really cute. Hang in there, everything gets better with time! XOXO

I think a display of vintage globes would nicely compliment your wall-o-maps. Or, a selection of framed PBN or other vintage art or photos relating to maps or specific places or even modes of transportation (ships, planes?) I'd keep it--at least for a while. If you really dislike looking at it, maybe you could cover it with a piece of fabric.

Congratulations on your new feral friend! Catnip and wet/dry food placed in a covered space away from the house and giving them their space at first can acclimate kitty slowly to your presence. Eventually they will see you as a friend, not a threat. You may never be able to pet or bring kitty inside but feral cats can bring your life a lot of joy. Once you bond a little, please, please contact your humane society or animal care & control for help with trap neuter return so kitty won't have to suffer the dangers and stresses of the feline breeding cycle. Making friends is great but if you love them and you feed them, you just gotta fix them. It's not as hard or as expensive as it might sound and there are many programs to help financially or with support and wonderful tips for feral care. ❤ -alleycatallies is my favorite resource for basically anything you want to know (sheltering, feeding, spay/neuter and finding trap-neuter-return programs near you)

I think it's a great idea to use the map frames and insert cardboard with vintage sheets or even Retro wallpaper. There's very cool 70s inspired peel and stick wallpapers that don't damage walls. Love the new place and the garden is beautiful!

I know things have been hard, but I am so proud of you! You have kept such a positive attitude which really helps! The house is really coming together and I love it! Don't feel pressured to keep the map visible if you don't like it!! I agree with not ripping it out or demolishing it, and I also agree with you that I don't think it fits with your style. I think a cute wall of vintage fabric there or whatever you choose to do would be very cute and make you happy to look at instead of seeing a map you are iffy about everyday.

It’s looking so nice your doing a great job putting it together.. I would do the curtains over the map it does nothing for the room. Feral cats take time to earn their trust.. Food is an big motivation I would leave it in a bowl out.. Talk to it when it comes around will get use to your voice and moving slowly helps.. I have be friended a few.. He is now a in and out cat 🐈‍⬛ but he’s so adorable and loving.. ps I would get sticks and string to play with them also.. Good luck

❤ just remember that you're not alone x we are here for you. That little hallway to your neighbours part of the house. That would be great as a storage room with some book cases, like a walk in wardrobe/ pantry. Cute sheet curtains to cover it up. Could put the dining table in the loungeroom and just use the room with the maps as a office...maps would suit. ❤

You should pull the drawers completely out to clean behind them, unless you can just open them and vacuum and clean the backs from inside the bottom cupboards, some sink units etc don’t have separate compartments but the drawers are on runners accessible from below. I would also put drawer liners in them so that your cutlery is not sitting on the bare wood that the rodents urinated on, this has bound to have soaked into the wood. Also liners in the cabinets. The top shelf that you are going to put your linens may need those insect repellant papers because there may be carpet beetles or moths and your linens will be eaten.

Wow, it's really coming along. For the map. I would make a bunting (flags) that goes from corner to corner and then try taking 2 quilt ladders and hanging your colorful sheets so that they're leaning against the map and that would just pop that area with full of color. Whatever you do, it will be adorable. Love the messy parts of the video. Kind of inspiring.

Hi Emily, so about themap wall...it is super vintage and cool but yet because of it's color, really does not go as a match to your style. It could still be cool on it's own as a juxtaposition to the dining room overall. If you did not want to have it exposed though, how about some of your vintage curtains on a high rod or a folding screen of some sort. Another idea would be to install shelving on the map as is and add your super cool flower power collectibles on the shelves. That idea would showcase allof your pretty things with a vintage background that matches the warm tone of the panelled wall across from it. xoxo~Dena

Your apartment looks great and you are doing very well and need just a little more time to adjust after going through a traumatic experience as a divorce. Your idea for the yellow screen is a good one. You don't like the map wall it isn't your style for sure. Putting it in front of the map and adding a quilt, aprons , vintage dollies or any vintage kitchen linens over the top would so adorable and would take your eyes away from the maps and is simple and easy to change if you wanted to. without touching that wall.

L❤️VE this im between video! What a lot of work you’ve accomplished in a short amount of time! My favorite aspects so far are your kitchen island 🥰 and the cookbook nook you have planned!!! GREAT job on the closet! I think the maps are cool but do nothing for your space and vibe. Are they attached to the wall in a manner that they could be taken down? I think if the frames remain (or if you’re able to take the whole thing down), starting a collection of 70’s art (that you find and LOVE) would be fun to have there….all different sizes and different frames). I think I’d find that more eclectic and interesting than a sheet 🤷. You could swap them out for Holliday themed art throughout the year! Just a thought!
Keep 😆…. You’re making amazing progress!

Love your home. I wish the maps were a little more vibrant. Can they be cleaned? If not, I like the idea of keeping the frames and maybe hanging something more fitting to your style. I hope you don't have a ghost but if you do, it's a friendly one! I recently ended a long term relationship and was so lonely since I don't have many friends and have no family around. I know it's not for everyone, but I got myself a little dog. I love having someone here with me all the time. For the kitty, talk to him or her and just be in their presence and take things slow. Kitties know good people and many will eventually warm up. It could also be a neighbor's outdoor cat that's just visiting and probably wary and surprised to see you there since the property has been vacant.

The map isn’t your vibe but I think the fabric in the frame is a good compromise with the room. Do what makes you happiest!

Your doing an amazing job and its so nice to have family to help you. I thought you had a pet at the other house but maybe mistaken. Not feeling those maps. They aren't your style. You love color and I think taking them down would be fine. Its your place, decorate it as you want, don't keep something just bc they are cool or neat or whatever. Follow your heart on decorating and take them down if you want. Hugs

Hi🙋‍♀️ I am a new subbie and I am SO GLAD I found your channel! I can’t wait to go back and watch all of your videos. I love anything and everything vintage 60’s and 70’s. I started Kindergarten in 1970 and growing up in that era was THE best!
I’m not sure if anyone mentioned this in the comments, but do you know why there aren’t very many closets in old houses? Because back then, closets were considered “rooms” and people were taxed on the amt. of rooms in their houses. That is one of the reasons for armoires. I learned that on “This Old House” many years ago.
I hope you are settling into your new digs by now and also getting used to being alone. It would be fun if you can befriend one of the feral kitties.
I LOVE all the ideas you have for decorating. I totally suck in that department. Totally. I gave up years ago! Lol
    Have a wonderful weekend!

Love this journey of yours and excited you are taking us along. For the maps, you clearly aren't vibing on them so don't force it. Maybe buy some utility pegboard sheets, paint a fun color and attach over the frames and then you can put ikea (or other brand) storage caddys etc on the peg boards. You are looking for more storage so instead of just a sheet the peg board would give you storage and allow you to decorate. I have seen people put draping plants in containers on peg boards and even shelving. Just a thought.

One idea is to put the bed in between the 2 windows, pull the curtains back away from the bed and created a valance from one window, across the bed to the other window and around the corner over the other window. And on that other window I would pulled the curtain back to the corner meeting the other window. It would frame the bed and look lovely with the 2 bedside tables. This is a typical midcentury design that was popular all the way thru the 70's and often featured in model homes.
I dont think the map is going to work. A lot more of these videos, dont pass up the ready made opportunity for content

I love in between stage videos. Otherwise it isn't real. Your aprons remind me of the old time pinafores that girls used to wear. Adorable! As far as the maps go, I feel like they are so lacking in color that they just have to go. Next to your colorful chairs the maps just are blah. If you have traveled extensively, you could put green and yellow push pins in the map to show where you've been. My other thought is that you put up a drapery rod and some decorative, bright sheets and make it look like a window wall. Oh my goodness, the ghost looks like a woman in a long, flowy dress! What is the area above your refrigerator? Is that open ceiling?

Hi I don't think the maps go with your decor ideas. I would cover them with your lovely quilt in the sheet fabrics. Sew a hanging sleeve on the back and use dowling threaded through to hang the quilt with command hooks. I'm in the UK and I collect vintage sheets however there aren't as many designs that you have in the US. Would love to go to your sale.

It looks great! I love the real life videos. It gives the rest of us hope. I also got divorced not too long ago and I am alone now that my daughter moved out last year. I lived alone for a long time before marrying but it still was weird at first. I did end up getting two kitties to break the silence. I hadn’t been pet free in over 20+ years so it was so quiet. Also, I’ve lived in several places that were haunted. My childhood home was haunted by a young boy who terrorized my brother and I. I feel like I must be open to it because I always seem to end up with a ghost or two so good luck with that. 👻 Happy unpacking! P.S. I’d cover the maps somehow 👍🏻

🍏🍎🍏🍎 Hi Emily! I’m glad you are getting soo much help from your Parents 🥰. The hardest parts are over. Moving is very stressful and time consuming. Everything looks squeaky clean 😉. Take your time decorating and getting to know your new home. Maybe cover the maps with plywood and make a huge chalk board where you can write down cute old fashioned recipes and draw vintage stuff. I think that would be super cute. If you ever need to move just take off the plywood and maps are back to normal without destroying them. I’m soooo excited to see the Apple Orchard come alive! 🍏🍎🍏🍎🍏
