    The argument against references has always made me roll my eyes. Just look at Norman Rockwell, one of the greatest painters of our time. So many of his big, famous paintings were tracings using a projector of photographs that he had taken, and then he'd go in and add stylistic embellishments. It's a completely legitimate method of constructing pieces.

      @@annaku_lickaliciousteetee It's simple courtesy ;) and you actually show some appreciation for the other artist by mentioning them by name so others can find them and their resources, too.

    • @edoalva48
      @edoalva48 3 года назад +6

      @@annaku_lickaliciousteetee The rules are as what you've said, but the implementation is very loose so far. I think that's mainly because of how much trending platforms artists can use in this era, with Instagram and Pinterest as such (other than online portofolio website that only visited by creators). That allow artists, amateur or veterans to enjoy more exposure within lay-people's society, but that brings hassle too.
      IMHO for references taken from Instagram Explore, it should be okay to not even notify the owner's account let alone suggesting to pay as long the artist create something with his / her own signature style and maybe with some extra additions. Because if the photos can be found there, their accounts must not be private anyway... Because the thing is, if we bring that up, despite of moral courtesy and good will, some jerks among them will instead ask to be paid out of lame excuses like privacy and rights and stuffs. And you know when that happens they will play hard to get and demand for ridiculous non-negotiable amount of money which they don't deserve. That breeds controversy.
      I think the safest way now especially if an artist on the way of getting big is to gather references from stock photos sites that has "commercial or personal use" tag for every images.

    • @SarcasticData

      I always think it's funny that the artistic community is so outraged when it comes to copying yet they are so selective on what is okay.
      Copying 1 picture? BAD!
      Copying a bunch of different objects and combining them to make your own? Perfectly fine.
      I could 1:1 copy a Ross Draws picture and everyone will boo and hiss.
      But if I copy from MANY different pictures and combine them, it becomes "original".
      I can steal the face from one model, the chest from another model, the hair from another model, the clothing from one manufacturer, etc. until I've created a collage of different references to create my end result and NO one will care that I copied from 10 people. It's only taboo if I copy from 1 person and I think that's dumb because it implies that 1 person you copied from didn't copy anyone themselves when you know dang well they did, even if they don't realize it.
      IMO do what you need to do to become a better artist. No one is original. Don't break the law or steal. Screw the taboo.

    • @golden_gaming_galas
      @golden_gaming_galas 3 года назад +12

      @@SarcasticData I think the issue is more what you claim the piece to be once it's finished/how you give credit rather than how many references you use. Like using one reference and calling it your "own idea"/not crediting a reference would only be okay if the drawing changed some of the details (clothing, face, character, palette, setting etc). But using one reference (ex: one of Ross' pieces), redrawing it with exactly the same details, and not crediting their work as the reference would be considered copying (which can sometimes get you into legal issues).

    I'll admit I am not the biggest fan of Ross, especially after some things he has chosen to do, but I do love how he owns up to past mistakes and how skilled he truly can be which is clearly shown in the video. The biggest thing I would add as a novice myself is for all other novice/beginners or even more advanced artists, is to remember to keep practicing. You won't be able to just go from reference to finished piece in your first go. Keep doing it over and over and eventually, you will be able to take that reference to a finished piece.

    The “taking a reference and making it your own” has been hard for me. I’m not a photo copier but I struggle with the need to make it look as close to the reference as possible. So I really needed to hear that advice.

    Breaking down pieces by artists you like & want to emulate with angles and shapes can also help you develop your own style- if you can figure out what elements of a piece you like (style, composition, etc) you can incorporate them into your own work. The more reference you do this with the more you train your brain to make good art 😄
