More for nostalgia sake but I loved the dragonology handbook by "Dugald a. Steer" when I was younger, not so much an art book as a picture book full of dragons with a loose documentary journal premise
Honestly one of the first art books I used as a kid was "Drawing Dragons and Those Who Hunt Them" - Christopher Hart. That one got me into art for real. Also apparently Christopher Hart also drew another book that inspired me "Simplified Anatomy for the Comic Book Artist." Both of which were very good for getting into drawing
i would also say that manga in theory and practice by araki hirohiko is also a great art book. it doesnt only teach you about how to make manga, but also about the human anatomy, characters, story, and landscapes there isnt very many pictures but it explains a lot
It's just a shame that they didn't actually go for writing it in Arabic. Arabic words aren't meant to be written with greek letters and it would have been more respectful, in my opinion, to actually write it in the language the sentence is borrowed from.
@@badreddinekasmi8919 It would have been cool if they included all three (Bab El Ahlam, Door of Dreams, باب الأحلام) on the cover in some artistic composition. Also you would be surprised how many Arabic speaking people actually write Arabic words in English letters, it first started as a way to deal with the lack of Arabic letters on some keyboards. Then it became a thing that some people use on regular basis.
Ross I've been watching you ever since I got into drawing and decided to start work throughout college on my own story and comic. Thanks for being a inspiration for me and many other artist around the world.
Thank you so much for this video, after going from drawing 3-4 hours a day even with school and work 3 months earlier to me not even drawing once a week anymore because of artblock and being very insecure about my art seeing this video in my recommended and watching my favourite artist just speak and talk about motivation and other stuff i'm finally reminded that it's about the journey and that it, like you said, takes many thousands of hours of hard work and practise to get good at art and be a professional artist it somehow gives me confidence again and makes me want to keep chasing that dream of drawing and painting for a living and making all this amazing art. Thank you for always inspiring me and so many others with your videos and artwork!
9:37 my art lecturer in my artschool recommended me to get that book when i am doing a comic book project last year i wont be too surprise that the next book to collect is ross draws nima verse
I absolutely love the Avatar The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra artbooks! I also have a very pretty Art of Pocahontas book, Glen Keane’s work is mind blowing.
Really enjoyed this, kind of help that I don't get to often hear about in the art youtube scene. Also felt really genuine to hear about your thoughts on them and their part in your journey
Haha! A lot of people do that where they may download the digital version of something they want, then later buy the physical version. By doing that, you showcase your interest in that individual's work and it is a great compliment. :)
Rossss! It's been a minute since I was able to tune in (adulting), I am so pumped that you made this video. I will definitely try to get my hands on these titles! I've missed you and the community! 💕
I'm reading all Andrew Loomis books at the moment and I love them SO MUCH! In my opinion he is a genius. "Creative illustration" really impressed me ❤ Thank you for this video! I love your art Ross 💞
I have the A:tla artbook aswell as the Korra s 1 artbook, and adittion to that, disneys Beauty and the Beast artbook, the Tangled artbook and most recently The Disney Princess A celebration of Art & Creativity.... I love collecting artbooks, especially from Disney Movies but it's a slow process. Ah I also have an italian book from the comic w.i.t.c.h which is more or less just showing the process from a sketch-to-finished- comic page of the comics, a few sketches here and there of the girls. As a big fan of the comic, it obviously was the biggest influemce for me growing up. I have some others aswell, but these are my current faves.
yes! my pokemon handbook also got me started drawing as a kid (except its up to gen 7 because I'm not a 90s kid and i kept buying the newer ones) I've been meaning up add to my two book collection, pokemon and nima are getting lonely, thank you for the suggestions!
I had that same JC Leyendecker book. I'm an artist who loves drawing the male form and that book was a treasure for me...so helpful, but I had to move a lot back then and I lost the book 😿. But I'm so glad to know another artist loves this book too❤️
It would be so awesome if Ross created a book filled with all of his ideas and advice accessible in one place. It’s already great that he has a bunch of tips and such on RUclips already though, don’t get me wrong. He is one of my favourite artists. I’m so exited for Bloom 2!
Thank you for these recommendations!! Even though I’m in art school and have definitely seen my work improve, I know I can do better if I apply myself on my off-time. Will definitely check these out!
So amazing collection. I can see the inspiration from them. You know that "Bab el Ahlam" 7:43 is actually an Arabic word. It means that the door of dreams, fantasy, imagination ... etc in which it explains that some of the artist drawing has a rectangle shapes representing doors. I was reading the name of the book and I thought to share this info.
I was primed to mention those Andrew Loomis books if you didn’t hive him a mention 👍👍 Great list Ross, i’ll check out Claire Wendling, she looks awesome 😁
Liked just for a whole video on the topic of art books! We have a lot of similar favorites so I don't have much to add - If you like Clair Wendling also look at Jaw Cooper's books too. (You've also prompted me to seek out a few more of my favorite artist to see if they've created anything in book form) :D
10:35 I had that book when I was a kid! Shouldn’t have bought it to school though as some POS stole it from my backpack and seen a group of kids tearing pages off of it later that day. This happened at the same school where they confiscated students Pokémon Trading cards because evolution is somehow evil. Yes, it was a Catholic school.
And I can relate to this incident as it was not a book but I bought one of my mom's expensive nailpolish to school in my backpack and the girl behind me took it out of my bag and started painting her nails while I was away😡 when I came back whole class was smelling like nailpolish 😩 .... Teacher who was incharge next period came and took it and I had a good hearing in principle office and home as well..... I don't remember the girl as I was very small but wtf I would never check someone else's bag....
I remember looking at that pokemon book in my school library, I was too good of a kid, I should've stole it. And since I'm broke, I have actually pirated those books you mentioned
WAIT BUT MY ART TEACHER WHO WAS LIKE 85 WAS LIKE 'yo dawg christina i got these scanned loomis books you want em? B)' AND I WAS LIKE WHAAAAAAA MS. B IS PIRATING???' it was incredible.
7:53 Don't worry, Arabic words aren't meant to be written with greek letters. If they went with a name in Arabic they should have stuck with it and actually written it in Arabic.
thank you for the suggestions! I’ll make sure to check them out at my local library for the meanwhile ^^. Btw I really love your tattoo. Do you happen to have a clearer photo of it? I kinda wanna do a similar tattoo ☺️
What are you some of your favorite art books??
Let me know below!! Always looking for more :D
Derek laughman and nima
More for nostalgia sake but I loved the dragonology handbook by "Dugald a. Steer" when I was younger, not so much an art book as a picture book full of dragons with a loose documentary journal premise
Virtual Self's art book is really amazing, you should check it out
is the tattoo permanent

You can never have enough art books…I should know I almost have a whole dresser full
Exactly!
RUclips is my art book
Lucky lol
SAME
It is so important to surround yourself with books filled with art that inspires you-leafing through them makes you want to draw.
i would also say that manga in theory and practice by araki hirohiko is also a great art book. it doesnt only teach you about how to make manga, but also about the human anatomy, characters, story, and landscapes
there isnt very many pictures but it explains a lot
James Gurney and Pokémon book 100%! I'm gonna have to check out that Iguana Bay book 🤓
james gurney has a youtube channel btw
RossDraws has a satisfying art style :o
7:44 Bab El Ahlam is Arabic which basically translates to "Door of Dreams" in English.
That's right 😭👍
It's just a shame that they didn't actually go for writing it in Arabic. Arabic words aren't meant to be written with greek letters and it would have been more respectful, in my opinion, to actually write it in the language the sentence is borrowed from.

nima has helped me so much to understand composing landscapes. it has such nice references
James Gurney's colour and light is genuinely such a fantastic book for people looking for a more in-depth study colour.
9:37 my art lecturer in my artschool recommended me to get that book when i am doing a comic book project last year
i wont be too surprise that the next book to collect is ross draws nima verse
I absolutely love the Avatar The Last Airbender/The Legend of Korra artbooks! I also have a very pretty Art of Pocahontas book, Glen Keane’s work is mind blowing.
It's hard to find a video that talks about artbook, so glad i found this!
Really enjoyed this, kind of help that I don't get to often hear about in the art youtube scene. Also felt really genuine to hear about your thoughts on them and their part in your journey
Color & Light is amazing!! I've been reading and rereading it for the past few years
Thanks for the amazing video Ross ♥
Haha! A lot of people do that where they may download the digital version of something they want, then later buy the physical version.
By doing that, you showcase your interest in that individual's work and it is a great compliment. :)
Somehow I've been consistent with this dudes videos
Rossss! It's been a minute since I was able to tune in (adulting), I am so pumped that you made this video. I will definitely try to get my hands on these titles! I've missed you and the community! 💕

Draw Like a Boss is the best art book in my opinion.
Second only to Draw Like a Boss 2 which is also awesome.
Don't worry Ross I have a Hyrule historia and I really like the Framed Ink
yes! my pokemon handbook also got me started drawing as a kid (except its up to gen 7 because I'm not a 90s kid and i kept buying the newer ones) I've been meaning up add to my two book collection, pokemon and nima are getting lonely, thank you for the suggestions!
Thank you for this Ross. You're an inspiration to me! I've been in an art block so thank you.
