I had labrum surgery in my late teens after a baseball injury caused subluxations. This is wild to see the best baseball player of our generation go through the same injury. I was shocked he played during the world series after the injury, you feel like your arm could go at any moment when your arm moves in a certain range. Massive respect and prayers for a swift recovery.
The skill, the communication, the education, the engagement. Wow. Thank you. This was splendid to hear. Our doctors and nurses deserve to get paid like athletes. It’s unbelievable what they are able to do.
The communication and education wasn't that great. He kept referring to the labrum as rubber. How many people will come away thinking we have rubber in our shoulders?
This Dr is a genius and a true expert. Wow, this guy really knows his stuff, explaining it so well. I thought Ohtani had just had a sore shoulder, but it was worse than I thought.
I had my broken hand fixed by an orthopedic surgeon. Fantastic guy, he loved what he did, and he did his job very well. Dr. Klapper is a tremendous teacher, and I hope he's a big part of teaching residents at Cedars-Sinai because I've never heard anyone explain how the labrum works so well. At first you think, "Golf ball on a tee? That's silly," and then you realize he's right, you can't get the same range of motion without that structure.
i had partial dislocation in high school,2 years of college football--very painful, finally gave up but rehab myself with weight training--wished they had this surgery 55 years ago
He wasn't the orthopedic surgeon that did Ohtani's surgery. It was someone else. This guy is just visiting the news to explain it from the perspective of a doctor same way the other doctor did the surgery to Ohtani
Expect less homers next year. This also slows down his throwing program so 50/50 on if he’ll be ready to pitch during spring training to be ready to start the season on time (as a pitcher)
Damn. just a simple slide to steal second base. But it did so much damage. Hopefully ohtani will come back healthy and will be the same player just like before he was injured
The fact that the doctor refers to the labrum as a rubber gasket instead of cartilage has me question is expertise. How many people seeing this will come away thinking we have actual rubber in our shoulders?
I did a bit of research, and he did graduate in 1983 that would allow to have 40 years of experience. My dad is the same age as him, we're Asian and my dad doesn't look as young as him. At first, I thought he is something special like he graduated really young like 18 but that still doesn't add up and to read 67 that made me so confused as well.
Being bald really helps, keep in mind he is kept up with the medical world, probably takes precautions to not age himself by inducing toxins to his body. He’s also pretty wealthy, and can afford skincare or healthy foods. Just stop eating junk food, also reduce your sugar intake.
Perhaps because doctors and educators don't help sell stadium tickets, merchandise, TV rights, advertisements, and overpriced beer and hotdogs. 😁 Capitalism. Plain and simple.
@@SuperJay12jay I mean, I think the BEST surgeons and doctors in the world can potentially make in the millions a year, which isn't the same as an athlete but after you're in the millions range it's kinda irrelevant what level of wealth you have, at least imo. now, comparing a majority of doctors and a majority of baseball players (A, AA, and AAA) doctors are gonna be making much more money and have more job security. Nothing better than someone who really enjoys what they do for work, like this doc! 💯👏👏👏

Hospitals are full of suits taking higher pay than their doctors now 😂
Sad state of the modern world.
The communication and education wasn't that great. He kept referring to the labrum as rubber. How many people will come away thinking we have rubber in our shoulders?
Medical technology is incredible. This doctor explains it so well.
Superb explanation. I will now do my own labrum surgeries.
😂😂😂😂
His explanation is awesome
This Dr is a genius and a true expert. Wow, this guy really knows his stuff, explaining it so well. I thought Ohtani had just had a sore shoulder, but it was worse than I thought.
Except for his continually saying the labrum is rubber.
The Surgeon is a great teacher, outstanding video!
A great teacher wouldn't refer to the labrum as rubber
Quite an amazing down to earth surgeon. I appreciate you.
Doctors and surgeons are awesome!!!!!
Very informative. Thanks.
A very simple explanation from a very professional and skilled doctor. Thanks Dr. Klapper!
LOVE the show & tell. Fantastic clip!
Wow if i ever need surgery, I'm going to this doctor 😂😂

This hurts me just watching him describing Shohei's shoulder surgery.
Hope he recovers fast
Dr. Klapper is not only a good surgeon but also a sculptor.
i had partial dislocation in high school,2 years of college football--very painful, finally gave up but rehab myself with weight training--wished they had this surgery 55 years ago
Did they discuss the possible recovery time? Weeks? Months? Will Shohei be ready next spring?
He’s won’t miss any time
@Pick6fun Thanks for that update.
no time? 😂😂😂
@@johngalanti1010 no time
He's expected to catch up with the spring training, but some believe he's likely not able to hit but to pitch in the Tokyo series
Cool segment.
Good ol' 360p
Beautiful explanation.
Clapper vision is a legend.
I seen MMA fighters and WWE wrestlers with multiple surgeries and still come back strong.
Thanks Doc for saving Ohtani! Looking forward to seeing him healthy and pitch next year!

This was interesting. Im glad fans can get more detailed info like this and not be treated like we're stupid. Medical tech these days is almost magic.
Recovery time? Will he be as good as before?
What is the actual recovery period for Shohei? Can he be ready for opening day 2025 in Tokyo?
6 -8 weeks is the recovery time.
Does anyone know when he’ll be able to pitch, though? They said he’s not going to be ready by Spring Training.
He pitched with his right arm, not his left. He will be fine.
@@Asubie Yeah I know. Definitely glad it wasn’t his pitching arm. But they did say he won’t be ready right away.
@JonathanAufderheide-ln8pr he might pitch in the middle of the season. 🤞
Poor Shohei
So what's the recovery (or did I miss him mention it)? That's the 700 million-dollar question everyone's wondering...
3-4 months
Old school type of daytime cable tv segment
I had three labrum surgeries on my right shoulder and one on my left shoulder. It's not fun. Rehab is long.
Damn. just a simple slide to steal second base. But it did so much damage. Hopefully ohtani will come back healthy and will be the same player just like before he was injured
This guy's been a surgeon for 40 years? He looks 45 or 50 years old.
The fact that the doctor refers to the labrum as a rubber gasket instead of cartilage has me question is expertise. How many people seeing this will come away thinking we have actual rubber in our shoulders?
I want him to be my surgeon..... thou my shoulder is just fine!!!😁
wow
40 years doing Surgery , So he started right out of High School ??? No Medical School Impressive !!!😅😂
He must've been performing surgeries on squirrels in middle school
hes 67
He completed his med school in 1983 at Columbia and his residency in 1988 at Cornell. So he does indeed have 40 years of surgery.
Like the kid on Little Rascals said "Remarkable!"
Dr. thinks He’s on a morning show cooking segment. Kurt, I want you to mix in the eggs and butter. 😂😂
But after surgery it must be painful😭😭😭🥺🥺🥺
well I believe it would be worse before the surgery😂
🧢💙⚾️
Oh, I must have missed his TED Talk on advanced surgery. His depth of knowledge is nothing short of a viral sensation!
I was not a believer but now I am.
please do not rush him. he needs time to heel.
How are ya!
Interesting
Where was this media attention when he was injured 3/6 seasons with the Angels?
Angels are cheeks
Oh, ok!
how old is he? i've read 67... but no way he looks 67. he looks like early 50s. BUT he obviously cannot have 40 years experience. I am so confused!

This is why in most field of expertise, practitioners should be the teachers.
This Dr should make more money than all star athletes. Why are we paying athletes more than our doctors and educators?
Perhaps because doctors and educators don't help sell stadium tickets, merchandise, TV rights, advertisements, and overpriced beer and hotdogs. 😁 Capitalism. Plain and simple.
Dr and educators can do their jobs long term, for athlete its only good before your middle age.
Doctors and scientists that saves and preserves lives should be paid more than athletes.
