More Americans watched the World Series than American watched the NBA finals this year as well. I think the craziest fact in terms of Japanese sponsorships is that Japan Airlines (JAL) sponsors Shohei Ohtani. There are only 2 major airlines in Japan and their biggest rival, All Nippon Airways (ANA), sponsors the Dodgers. I don't think comparing it to the US airline industry will do it justice because it's more diversified than Japan. The best comparison I can think of is the computer industry (Microsoft and Apple) both having sponsorships for the same organization.

    Expat to Japan here. During the 2024 world series, everywhere I went that had a TV they were showing the games, or the channel dedicated to just following Ohtani-san around. The number of LA hats I see walking around the streets is absolutely mind blowing. It rivals the number of Fighters hats I see even while living in the city that hosts the Fighters. All my Japanese friends and instructors regularly talk about Ohtani-san, regardless of the time of year. They know where my hometown of San Diego is because of Darvish. This countries obsession with baseball is completely next level, and I don't think anyone who hasn't lived here can understand it fully.

    Funny thing is, if baseball gets a salary cap, the only teams that will suffer are the other large market teams (Yankees and Mets). People don’t understand that the dodgers have such a good farm system, as we speak, there are like 5-6 guys who will make a future roster and be a huge contributor in the playoffs. They have the most money sure, but they have the best scouts and talent from top down in the organization. Any rule you institute, they will adapt. They will find a way around the salary cap.

      @Qdub34 An argument you could make is that the Yankees weren't nearly as effective at doing this as the Dodgers because they'll bust out the pocket book, but they make some really stupid decisions with who they spend it with. Essentially, the Dodgers are so efficient at this that not restricting their spend might allow them to create the same efficiency that the 1930s to early 1960s Yankees had with their farm system when there weren't roster limits. Essentially, until the draft they did everything they could to hoover up as many talented white (their only real inefficiency until they finally signed Elston Howard and broke their own color barrier) prospects as possible and teach them up and see who panned out. The MLB draft was arguably created to kill the early 20th century Yankees farm system and for a time that didn't succeed because the Yankees held a debt over the Kansas City Athletics owner and could effectively demand trades from them and use them as a major league farm team. That only ended when that owner sold to Charley O'Finley and he declared no more trades with the Yankees.

    Deferring money isn't the same as taking a pay-cut, nor is it "controversial". There have been a huge number of deferred contracts in sports history with the most viral being Bobby Bonilla. However, backloading contracts is not only a thing, it is pretty common especially in baseball. Someone getting paid $50 million over 10 years usually isn't going to get 5 per year, but more like 2.5, 2.5, 2.5, 2.5, 5, 5, 5, 5, 10, 10 or something like that. Obviously the amounts of money the Dodgers are paying players is unprecedented but the manner they are doing it in really is not.

      @OMG-si3wn Yeah, it does for sure. You do end up having to pay the piper eventually. Like he pointed out in the video though, it saves the team a ton purely in inflation dollars. Also a lot of teams will end up trading parts of those in the cash deals you hear about. Basically they will trade part of the contract to a team like Oakland who has room on their luxury tax and then they will also pay the team the money to pay the whole thing. That way the Dodgers are still paying the cash, but they aren't being taxed by MLB for it

    • @r7calvin
      @r7calvin 16 дней назад +5

      It kinda is like taking a pay cut, both for the player and for the team. The Dodgers need to set aside about $460M for the next 10 years. The MLB luxury tax will be applied as if $460M were added to the LAD payroll. When Ohtani receives all of his money, he'll have the purchasing power of about $460M in current dollars.
      The only difference is that you get a ton more publicity off the massive $700M figure + a bunch more publicity due to the unprecedented 97% deferral.

If you add Asia and America this WS at 30 million, there are more viewers than the highest view NBA Finals with Micheal Jordan at 29 million. I watched a POD cast with NBA players and they said at least 50% of the NBA players dont like basketball. Legends like Kareem said they watch the NBA. Even players dislike basketball. Also the way the treated Jeremy Lin Lin because he wasnt the right race was terrible. People and I see through it. The refs have too much power in basketball. Idk where the 40% decrease stat you said came from but that seems alil off tbh no sport drops that much in one year. The issue like i said before is there isnt any like "star player" Otani is the first star star i seen in like a Decade... theres been good players but no like "omg hes fun" player in so long which those players are the ones that bring youth into sports. NBA you are right with Lebron leaving def gonna have a hard time going forward but all 2010s they had alot of start stars like KD, Curry, Bron etc... we need stars like that in MLB but otani is a good start.. also that guy on the Yankees is kindof fun to watch.. wish he hit better tho but hes def fun to watch. The 2000s we had so many flair players like Jeter and Jose Reyes, Big Papi and so many more that were on each team to make it fun af to watch

    Ohtani signing a contract like that shows you how much he cares about winning. Isn't about Money. This guy wants to be legendary. Wants to be the greatest baseball player of all time and he's willing to do ANYTHING outside or inside the field to get achieve his goal
    In my opinion. The Dodgers don't need Soto. Just get more starting pitching. Your offense is already the best in baseball there's no need to add more if you already outscoring teams so heavily. Get more Starting pitching so it doesn't end up happening like this postseason of having literally just 3 pitchers starting and 2 of them being a complete question mark. Jack,Sasaki and Corbin should be the target.

    • @jameschen3553
      @jameschen3553 16 дней назад +1

      @@NicolasWoodcock Lol, this is false. You do not save more in taxes than getting the entire amount of the salary now. 68M more now in even the basic invest interest compounded annually in addition to another 68M every year is far greater than any tax savings you can get. Even better, investing in properties will return far more in return than tax deductions or savings. His life has not been all about money, something that is a foreign concept to a lot of professional athletes. He makes way more in advertisement than his 70M so he is fine without 68m of it annually for the time being. If he would have been that much about money, he wouldnt have come over into MLB when he did and lost hundreds of millions. Not only is he not getting interest in the deferred money, that PV value loses a lot of value over time just sitting there. Unless you can say he literally will not get tax at all, he losses value due to inflation, and opportunity lost in investment far more than any tax deduction he can get. Even with zero tax at the end of the day, with that much money involved, opportunity cost is way more than taxes.

Fernando Valenzuela was from Sonora, just to give an example, and the last inning of the 2020 WS was pitched by a man Born in my hometown (Julio Urías, sadly he’s an asshole) and was a very promising pitcher and that’s just two ppl I remember there are many more. You're limiting how much players as a whole can make, and you're forcing them to go to certain teams if the team they want to play for can't find the space to afford them. Not only that, but certain owners have no incentive to spend money and just collect hundreds of millions in profit every year and don't invest in their club.
