  • AUTO FANATICA | VW Passat B5 TDi | REVIEW 2019 | (2004) | Volkswagen, Legendary and Indestructible
    I've got a history with the VW PD engines in taxis going back years and still have admiration for, in my opinion, one of the best diesel engines ever made. The Passat B5 was probably the best era for Volkswagen in terms of build quality. If it weren't for so many being mistreated and not correctly maintained, many more would have survived to present day.
    In 2019 you can still find plenty of these for sale on the internet in various places and most all are sub £2000. Some of these Passats are still in service as taxis on UK roads with over 500k miles on them!
    Pros: low cabin noise, good viewing position for drivers, well spec'd for the time, incredibly durable, comfortable seating and ride quality, unlock high performance with a simple ECU remap.
    Cons: Looking a bit dated by modern standards, hard to find a well cared for example today, make sure timing belt and water pump were changed every 90k miles, prone to rust on front wings and tailgate.

    Owned a 1.8T - best built car I’ve ever owned - better than my neighbours B7. Fancy another one - a 1.9 TDI this time !

    I've had my 2002 Passat 2.0 petrol for 14 years. It has no rust, it's on the same clutch, same exhaust and 300 away from 100000 miles!

    My Passat 1.8t FWD 5 Speed makes about 300 hp and 300 ft lbs at the wheels, i've topped it out at 148 mph and had room to go on the factory turbo and internals. Awesome platform.

    Me dads got one as a second car to and from work. Wasn’t in the best condition mechanically but he’s took care of it and treat it to oil changes every 6 month and good fuel and honestly it runs so well

      What trim level is your car? The standard torque level for highline (heated leather) models is 285Nm

    I have the same car, the same color, only the engine is 1.8 turbo and I would like to ask you how you set the correct position behind the wheel, the seat as low as possible before you start driving the car, thank you

    Skoda Superb has the Passat chassis but 10cm longer because Skoda tried to make it more "upmarket"

    • @v6tex
      @v6tex 3 года назад +1

      The Superb's longer wheelbase gives more space for passengers in the back - it has more space in the back than a Merc S Classe. Because the Superb is newer than the Passat, there are a lot of nicer parts inside like the aluminium AC vents. I'm a big fan of the Superb's updated centre console where the shifter and stereo go, and I'd like to install that part of the dashboard in my Passat

    very in depth review but how about to put the seat belt on?!

    • @autofanatica944
      @autofanatica944  2 года назад

      A few people brought that up. Taxi drivers are exempt from seat belt and it was a registered taxi at the time. Force of habit. You'll notice I wear a seatbelt in all my other videos. You do have a point though.

    Can you review the 2.0 AZM 115 hp engine on those ? How durable is it compared to the 130 hp one ?

      Sounds like more of a detail engineering video. I don't know if I'd have time to work on another video type. I'm going to be covering other VW products. I've got a MK1 superb sitting in my drive just now I'd like to look at as comparison as it's a base model classic. I might be able to work something into that.

      I'm going to be covering the 04' Superb at some point which is a very similar car. It's a shame Skoda didn't make an estate model until the 08' model (never liked the B6 ones).

      @@leeprice9572 Taxi drivers are by law allowed to drive without a belt so they can escape if passengers get too troublesome. My dad has had to have fist fights with passengers before. It's a hard job and too many people have no respect.

      I do have a soft spot for the B5 series and the Superb of the same era. They were never the same after that. I sold a 1.8T estate last year to a friend and I'm starting to regret it. It was running a map, coilovers and a set of gold BBS deep dish rims. It was a 1 owner car with full history. Kinda miss that one, seeing it at work hurts just a little.
