Cutting the Hangman's Rope with a Bullet| Gun Myths with Jerry Miculek (4K UHD)
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- Jerry tests the classic western myth (As seen in movies such as 'The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly, 'Back to the Future Part III', and much more) that you can cut a rope and save the day with just your gun, a bullet, and some superhuman aim; Using period correct rope and ammo, and taking it to the extreme with a .50 cal sniper rifle. The results might actually surprise you!

It actually does, the engravings creates a somewhat ruff surface which makes it easier to grip. Plus there has been studies done where a uneven surface reduces drag and makes swell behind the object for faster draws.

"Never let the facts get in the way of a good story." -Hollywood
I agree.
I'm pretty sure the "shoot the rope" concept originated before guns existed. For example it's a staple of Robin Hood stories. And a arrow (with the proper arrowhead) is a better choice than a bullet for cutting a rope.
Either way though it's more reliable (though less dramatic) to shoot the hangman and save your buddy *before* he drops.
Oh that's long since covered. You can't save your buddy if he's still standing with his arms bound and his neck in a noose. You shoot the rope in middrop then he can barrel roll and start running while your buddy rides in with an extra horse.
A second late and his neck breaks. Better to shoot the guy pulling the switch.
@@alexclark4792 Or better yet... Shoot his hat off. He'll be cought like a deer in the headlights.
RedXlV it’s called a broad head.
@jondonwayne wayne Well it's your job to shoot the executioner if he's killing your friend isn't it? Also strangulation by hanging was only used on the worst of criminals. It has nothing to do with "skill". It actually is all in where you place the noose's knot if its on a shoulder side it snaps the neck if it's at the back or front it strangles.
Remember: you don't necessarily have to cut it. You just have to weaken it to the point where it'll break before the person's neck will.
That was the 200 pounds of static weight
@@cgla6935 Yeah but the 200lbs isnt actively falling to the ground in this video, Its on top of something,l. If you shot the rope and got it weak enough as the person is falling, the Accelleration of the person should be enough to snap the weakened rope.

Hickok ain't a half bad shooter but Jerry is in a different league. A Hickok/Jerry collaboration would be great though.
I like Hickock but he'd have no chance
I think Hickok used to do cowboy shooting competitions. Though I would guess he's not as fast. Still though, funny how Hickok and Miculek have such similar styles though. Gray hair, glasses, mustache, hat.
3:54 in, the rope actually breaks where the first shot nicked it, not where the 45-70 hit it.
bobw222 also in most westerns, when using a pistol, they fire at least twice when shooting a rope.
Sisal ropes have short fibers that's why they are weak. 2 shots close together did the trick

Exactly. He should have replaced the rope for an accurate test. All he did was snap the already damaged rope.
@OPEN YOUR MIND B4 UR MOUTH We can see he didn't hit the rope in the exact same place. But the first shot damaged the rope, and the impact of the second further damaged it, allowing the weight on the rope to snap it.
@@howardsmith9342 Agreed! The inner strands were the only parts of the rope holding the weight. The outer strands were relieved of bearing weight during the first shot. All he did was sever the remaining weight bearing strands at a higher level with the second shot.

Wish it was a fresh rope when the 500 grain was fired because on the slowmo it appeared that the rope got snapped from the previous point of impact....
Chekirrout
It absolutely does. the 45/70 causes the .45 long impact to fail
outlaw josey wales...."this here is what we call a missouri boat ride"... shoots heavy rope on river ferry with sharps...
Wouldn't you aim for the previous hit, too?
I was thinking the same thing. Why would you shoot the same rope twice and consider that a fair test between two guns. I don't doubt that the 45/70 wouldn't have a better chance of snapping the rope but I find it hysterical to really fire on the same rope twice and even worse, just a nick above the original .45 impact.
Adolf Hitler He hit it dead nuts in the center with a .45 LC wadcutter, with 200+ pounds on it. Apparently not, haha!
Wow, I actually never realized that The Outlaw Josey Wales featured almost the same thing, He shoots a ferry rope with a 1865 Sharps Rifle. I never made the connection but it is almost the same thing.
Yah I just realised too
+DTKT Defensive Concepts That ferry rope was huge in diameter. But with the tension on it...it broke easily.
It's amazing how far slow motion cameras have come to be able to see a .50 bmg moving at 3000 fps in flight
The Good, The Bad & The Ugly is my favorite Western of all time. Guns of the Old West are my favorite firearms of all time, so its interesting to see a Sharps rifle really can cut the rope with one shot. Can't beat the awesome quality and history of these great guns :)

I'd bet that one was impossible. I dont think the bullets from the colt navy were large enough to cut those boards that neatly.

Yep. Bit of trivia, wanna know how the movie's title was translated in Spain? 'Cometieron Dos Errores'. Literally, word by word, it means 'They Made Two Mistakes' - obviously, the first being lynching the wrong man, the second not making damn sure that he was dead for good.
Don't tell me that's not one of the best titles for a western tale you've ever heard.
We must've had someone here in Spain in the movie business during that era that loved westerns to death, and had the mind of a cowboy and the heart of a poet, because there were more memorable cases, like 'A Few Dollars More'='La Muerte Tenía un Precio' ('Death Had A Price'), 'The Searchers'='Centauros del Desierto' ('Centaurs of the Plains'), or 'Once Upon A Time In The West'='Hasta Que Llegó Su Hora' ('Until His Time Came'). Whoever it was, sure had a flair for epicness, hands down.
Hang'em right that won't be very long. Just a snap and it's all over. Do it wrong like most suicides do though and ouch

If you had someone dangling and struggling - rather than just hanging limply, I wonder if the remaining threads would hold or snap - with the Pistol shot...
I wondered if the weight had not bottomed out if the last strands would hold it up. I also wonder what his ammo and bullets shelf looks like now. Wow! that is a lot of boxes.

Engravings offer no tactical advantage.

Your dampening the recoil? I think you're only supposed to do that with a revolver.
*adjusts glasses* In fact, the engravings lessen the shine from the polished metal, so it would have a similar advantage to putting a matte black finish on a gun, decreasing the visibility.

We need a modern gunslinger movie with Jerry as a main character and Adrien Bellue's song Stringslinger as the main theme. Trust me.
I first saw you in a joint video with Iraqveteran8888 - Soon as I heard your accent I said that man is from Louisiana. ALWAYS go 45-70!
That second one actually just snapped at the spot the revolver made so the second one didn't really do it either. The shock from the second shot just caused the first shots weak spot to fail.
Last week I heard Clint Eastwood when he talked about your latest RUclips video.
Interestingly he said:
"Apparently I am not the man Jerry is!"

Sisal rope is made from the sisal plant, a type of agave related to the tequila agave.

There will be a lot of revolver shooting if those two ever gets together...
mythbusters did that myth busted
I was standing next to a guy who shot-off his own hat due to his bullet ricocheting back at him. It was a straw type western-ish hat. the bullet punched a hole right through the top portion of the hat. Seriously!! He was shooting a lead conical bullet at a metal target and, unknown to me, he was aiming at a target that was much too close.
hdpug22 video is Hickok45
commando602 Shoot the hat off a watermelon with a sharpie-moustache sounds like more fun.
Two inches difference in impact point will likely cause a different group of yarn to be cut and because of the TWO cuts the rope breaks. I have had to inspect wire “rope” in the Navy as part of weapons handling and one of the criteria was how many broken strands in “x” distance.
Seeing the bobber attached to the tumble weed was pretty funny..
gonna make my character in red dead look like him. mans is a gunslanger
I LMAO when he pulled out the 50 cal sniper rifle.
The tumbleweed on a string was also a nice touch. :D
I use a smith and Wesson 617 and file the bullet tips flat so the cut.
I use it to get my fish hook unstuck from branches and twigs across the bank or in the water. if you don't file them flat it's nearly impossible
Huh???
But even if you file them flat, they're still spinning when they hit anything. So they must act like a flat-bladed drill bit, a router.
Im hoping this would end with a 50 calibre barret.
Edit: and what do you know, he just made my day.
The Shilo sharps must equate to what they were calling a Spencer in the movie "Unforgiven"
Clint Eastwood actually use a sharps to cut the rope off of a horse in the good the bad and the ugly
It's pretty windy with that tumbleweed at 1:27 😂
They did it on one of the history channel shows with a 45LC wadcutter. Has a very sharp edge, it worked
Fun video. But with all due respect, Mr. Miculek needs to look closer at where that rope broke when the 45-70 hit it. I'm giving equal credit to the 45 Colt.

"I got more horse power then Clint Eastwood ever had" 🤣🤣....
Get em Jerry!!!!
The hand gun nearly cut it through, the rifle just finished the job.
He shot the rope above the initial cut. The rifle didn't finish the job, it did 100% of the job.
the first separation point is at the original hit not where the rifle hit - maybe with an intact rope the rifle would have done it, but this test didn't show that.
was dying laughing when he pulled out the 50! great to see the Master taking on these gun myths.
Wow, you even look like Gene Hackman in that movie. Quick and the Dead was an awesome movie.
Just saying the weight looked like it was slightly resting on the platform. But I wasn't there so I don't know! Fun video, keep up the good work!
Cutting the rope is possible. The probability is pretty slim.
That is my experience. Probability much less than possibility.
A legend. Cowboy loads. No recoil. Sometimes power matters, but most of the time it’s accuracy and speed that matters.
