I've always believed that Dennis Rodman was an underrated passer! He was a really good passer if you ask me! Many times he'd get the rebound and throw a good outlet pass which would lead to an easy basket! And obviously he's the best rebounder I've ever seen! I was born in 1977, so I wasn't around when Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain were averagin 20+ rebounds! But my favorite part in The Last Dance was when Dennis Rodman talked about rebounding! And I quote: "I'd just sit there and react, react. I just practiced a lot about the angle of the ball and the trajectory of it. You got a Larry Bird, it's gonna spin. You got a Magic, it'll maybe spin. When Michael shoot over here, I position myself right there. Now it hit the rim, it's boom. Click, go back this way. Boom, here, here. Click, go that way. Boom, that way. Click here, this way. So basically I just start learning how to put myself in a position to get the ball." My jaw dropped open when I saw him reveal his secrets in The Last Dance!
I also read in a Dennis Rodman autobiography where he would say that he would very rarely box out! He would just tip the ball to himself!

I remember being 4 years old, watching the 1988 NBA Finals and watching the Pistons play that year (this was the start of me watching basketball).. and I clearly remember telling my Grandpa "the Pistons are better when that Rodman guy plays. They need to play him more." I think that might have turned my Grandfather into a Rodman fan, because my Grandfather always cheered for whatever team Dennis Rodman was on after, while I always cheered for the Bulls. When Dennis Rodman joined the Bulls, it really felt like a match made in heaven. I grew up north of Chicago in the late 80s and lucky enough to experience the 6 in 8 run but prior to the last three when I heard they got Rodman my first reaction was oooh man that guy from detroit i hate all while all you heard from the media was is he going to break appart the team. What were they thinking? Three years later good thing they got him. Obviously internet in its infancy days circa mid 90s its not until way later you learn of some of the stories like how Dennis was pretty much broke and it set up a perfect situation where he needed to perform and under a guy who despite years was an adversary he respected the hell out of in Jordan - on the court you can tell Dennis did not want to let Jordan down. He turned out to be the ultimate team mate, all energy all the time, never took a play off. Mike probably put up with some of that off court stuff because he knew at the end of the day Dennis wanted to win. Him running down the court both arms up like he just hit a game 7 winner are great. Kids today will never see an anomoly like Rodman since its all just a collection of shooters, this guy is in the hall on the strength of defense and rebounding the basketball which manifests itself from work ethic and his under rated baskeball IQ. I miss the days when players took pride in playing defense

I recall some of the playoff runs where Rodman was THE man and turned things around. Where MJ and Scotty had partied too much and were not able to get beyond cruising it was Rodman going on a tear with rebounding, blocking and shutting people down in the zone. It was incredible to witness.

Back when I played 2k, my internet was trash so I always hated taking jump shots online. I made my build based around Rodman, 6'8 230 lbs, pure defence and rebounding badges. That was probably the most fun build I ever had, and it always killed me when people got mad that I'm 6'8 and can't shoot a 3 until they saw me rebound over everyone while able to switch off to defend the perimeter lmao.
I made it a goal to aim for lower than 6 pts, but always aimed for more than 15 rebounds. the funniest shit is hearing people be like "how the fuck you get 2 points but 24 rebounds and 8 assists?"

Not to detract from how good a rebounder Rodman was, but did anyone ever hear of Wilt and Bill Russell. Both were bigger, faster, stronger, mentally tougher, had just as good a sense of timing, and far superior stats. There's Wilt and everybody else.

@@erichansen82 He is smoking the truth. Wilt had by far the highest one step reach the league ever saw. 7'1" + 40" vert + 7'8" wingspan. Nobody even came close. Bill was athletic as hell too and had a vert in the same range if not higher. Both were track and field athletes before they switched to Basketball and competed in High Jump. They were way faster and much more agile than Rodman. Both had excellent timing (Nobody grabs 22+ rebounds per game avg for career w/o timing [yes, they both did]). Cherry on top, Wilt was strong as hell, maybe the strongest player in the NBA ever. He would have tossed Rodman around like a ragdoll (like he did with other 230 lbs players when he was pi$$ed).
Rodman could be lucky if the ball bounces towards him and Wilt isn't in range - but that's the only way he would grab a rebound vs Wilt Chamberlain.

I love Rodman. He's one of the greatest for sure. But GOAT rebounder? Let's not forget about Wilt Chamberlain, who pulled down an other-worldly 55 rebounds in a single game against the most successful team in NBA history, Bill Russell's Boston Celtics?
Chamberlain led the league in rebounding a record 11 times! One season he averaged 27 rebounds a game. In 15 seasons, Wilt averaged 23 rebounds a game for his entire career. He still holds 21 NBA rebounding titles, including 8 in the playoffs such as most rebounds in a single post-season (444) and highest average in a single playoff series (32 against the mightly Celtics). So many his records are likely never to be broken.
As well, I understand fully it was a different era and teams took more shots and therefore there were more rebounds to be had. But there's no chance Rodman would have increased his career average from 13 to even close to 23 had he played during this time. And contrary to most assumptions, Wilt did everything he did while facing some of the greatest big men in NBA history. There was less talent to go around then but there were far fewer teams (from 8 when he started to 17 when he ended his career), so Chamberlain was going up against some great teams and faced Hall of Fame big men nearly every game he played, people like Bill Russell, Nate Thurmond, Walt Bellamy, Jerry Lucas, and, later, Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
If you want to point to championships, let's not forget that basketball is a team sport, and to win requires high levels of play from teammates and good coaching. The two times Wilt Chamberlain had those elements, he won championships. If he somehow ended up on the Celtics instead of Russell, I think Chamberlain would have won even more championships than the Celtics legend ultimately did.

You must be joking... No doubt Wilt Chamberlain is the greatest rebounder of all time. Grabbing 55 rebounds in a single game vs Bill Russel (19 rebounds) w/o overtime (both played whole 48 min). I mean, c'mon, this alone gives him the crown. 30.1 ppg 22.9 rpg avg for career. Nobody else did 30-20 even for a single season. Only one player else who averaged 17+ rebounds per game for career was Bill Russel (22.5 rpg), only 5 players ever have been able to reach 14+ rebounds per game average for career (including Wilt and Bill). 37 ppg 27 rpg avg in his rookie season. 50 ppg 25 rpg avg season 1961/62. Leading the league 11 times in rebounds. Leading league in points and rebounds five times. Leading league in assists and rebounds 1967/68 (3 ppg short to lead in points too). If blocks were offically recorded before 1973, he would have lead the league in blocks for most (if not any) of those seasons too. He had argueable the highest one-step reach in Basketball history.
30-30 games: Wilt: 128(!), rest of league any era combined: 19(!) (in my opinion the most impressive record ever that never will be broken). He also had an inofficial quintuple double (blocks and steals weren't officially recorded, but recorded by team internal analyst).
Stop it please. Only one who came close to Wilt was Bill Russel, followed by a HUGE gap of empty space.

The bulls were lacking that toughness and defensive presence. Especially when Dennis can guard on the perimeter and clamp guys in the post. The guy was simply phenomenal. With 5 Rings, he beats most of the 'greats' in that category also. Looking at just his 'Offensive rebounds' career average of around 5ppg, you could argue that this is potentially worth another 10 points he contributed to the team. So if you take OREB off his total and converted to points, that would make his scoring average 'true value' closer to 18 ppg and would still leave him at 8.5 DREB.

I grew up in Detroit and there were rumors that Worm was actually one of the best shooters on the team, even on the free throw line. In practice. Unfortunately, I think because of how hyperactive he was on the court and also because he had no confidence in game with his offense, that never translated into scoring (other than offensive putbacks). But obviously, that didn't matter in his career. He was pretty much the missing piece for a championship team. The hustling, rebounding, defensive stalwart that got you that key steal, rebound, charge that could change a game. It's interesting that the Pistons had 2 game-changing, Hall of Fame superstars in their history that didn't have to score a point to impact a game. High IQ, hard-nosed, rebounding machines that took pride in shutting down the other team's best scorers and proving that no one worked harder than they did. Who wouldn't be proud of Dennis Rodman and Ben Wallace, blue collar superstars?
