You are absolutely correct. Larry could get in other player's heads like no other, and that could change the outcome of the game in many instances. Thanks for sharing!!
I remember going to see the celtics with my grandfather and dad back in the 86. I was 10 years old. Fell in love with basketball that night and have bled green ever since. I love me some larry legend.
Give Larry all the same modern advanatages in terms of nutrition, training, equipment (especially shoes), surgeries, recovery techniques, medicines, vitamins, drugs, travel luxuries, no hand checking, and trigger happy whistles, BIRD would be an every year MVP candidate. Now imagine him on today's Celtics team 😂 Bird's game, because of his shooting superiority, would be a 6'10 stretch big par excellence. Think Porzingus meets Joker meets Durant. His inside game would be ridiculous. And Larry could get up and down the court just as fast as any player today except for the real speedsters. AND he would be a top ten defensive player for smart anticipation, not to mention his passing game. And then the Larry mindset. His clutch shooting, etc. In todays game Larry's career lasts six or seven more years, and his peak would have lasted 3-4 more years. And that means 1-2 championship and 1-2 more MVPs. Same could be said for Magic, McKale, Parish, DJ, Kareem, etc.
I grew up watching Larry. My biggest take away was when he missed a shot in a key moment everyone watching was always surprised. Always expected it to go in.
As much as I loved Larry Bird, I have a place in my heart for "Pistol Pete," "Earl The Pearl," Oscar Robinson, "Magic Johnson," and those who paved the way for those who followed.
Took me a long time to realise it but he is by far the best small forward ever. His spot is safe as we probably won't see any player with this kind of hustle, mindset, IQ.
Larry would dominate in any era. For me, it's not a question of if he could play in this era. It's a question of how these players of this era would react to his trash talk. There might need to be a whole category of therapists to help them cope!
Jordan would eat this modern league alive. Why? Because of social media. We saw how competitively nuts he is in "The Last Dance". People don't think that wouldn't fuel Michael even more, to hear Skip Bayless or some troll on social media criticize his play LOL. "And I took that personally". Michael came back to basketball because some rookie on the Utah Jazz said, "Why'd you quit? I could guard you!". It's the way these players are mentally wired that makes them great. Their body was just along for the ride. That's what modern NBA fans don't get.
And for the record Original dream team would destroy this USA team and it would not even that close Talking ten point victories and some crazy blowouts as well Gentleman sweep in a best of seven Might even be sweep 🧹
Larry is still amazing 30 plus years later. Even the youth of today are in awe of what this Legend has done for basketball. Magic said " there will never ever EVER be another Larry Bird"!
Especially the fact that from the way he started that talk with the rookie you knew he did it on purpose to joke around. Almost nobody has the balls to do that.
76er's and Celtics was a hell of a rivalry too....i remember a Philly Playoff game where Bird was at the line to shoot free throws and just when he about to shoot 2 guys underneath the rim stood and unfurled 2 life size posters of babes in bikinis. Bird made the shot, but busted out laughing at the line.
Awesome compliment for Larry Bird coming from some of the NBA's Best! I never knew Larry Bird as the intimidator, but just a Great shooter and scored many points. Hats off to Larry Legends!
As a life long Knicks fan I hated him bcuz he would ALWAYS cut our throats out and beat us all the time.... except in 1990 when the Knicks lost the first two games then won three straight to win the series in Boston I might add. But yeah for years he gave me nightmares
YES. I wouldn't say I liked the Birdman back then. West Coast fan. But, seeing Birdman's highlights. He was a Special player. I love his endurance. If he served with us overseas. Combat Engineers in the 1970s. He fit right in.
Larry Bird was so bad; he asked who was coming in 2nd; f$%k the whole room; they people were talking trash until Bird asked that question: Who is coming in 2nd, and heads went down
Laker fan that only now, all these years later, misses the spectacular Larry Bird. He would be truly able to play and dominate in any era. Only player that I EXPECTED to make every shot, pass, board, and defensive play but was surprised and elated when he didn’t and yet now, I'd give anything to see him play again and just appreciate what I didn’t then, true greatness!
I’d like to preface this by saying that I played basketball in NYC in an all black high school and got my nick name from the brothers playing at The Cage and at Rucker Park. We were all trying to emulate what Larry bird was doing on the playground and it was impossible for us. However, I remember hearing what Pat Riley said, “If I had to choose a player to take a shot to save a game, I’d choose Michael Jordan, but if I had to choose a player to take a shot to save my life, I’d take Larry Bird."
Larry Bird played hurt. Much worse hurt than any player would think about playing nowadays. Heck, he broke his cheekbone and came out and finished the game. If he had not hurt his back doing some home project, he could’ve played a few more years.
I’ve bet on exactly one nba final (actually my only basketball bet ever). In 1987 a Celtics fan asked me to take a $1 bet. I told him, I also wanted the Celtics to win, but I took the bet anyway. The lakers did win. I’m 1-0 but I would have rather lost that bet.
Couldn't stand baseball, football, let alone golf BUT BASKETBALL IS GREAT! I started watching the Celtics during the sixties, loved them. The best was when Boston TV stations broadcast college ball with the Celtics 1978 draft choice, Larry Bird! I went to Univ. of WI-Madison in '73. I got into fights with Buck fans because I was the only Celtics fan around for miles! Got back to Boston Sept.'79 - glued to the set watching Bird! Bought Celtics shares in the 80's. Larry Bird is the BEST PLAYER EVER!!!!! Jason Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Derrick White, Payton Pritchard and Kristops Portzingas are finally in the same league as the '86 Celtics. They need another Championship to reach Legendary Status! Difficult with all of the 'Sports Betting Interests' but do-able!
Rodman came into the league in 86 and Bird cooked him by his own admission in later years. Bird injured his back and Dennis learned to be a better player. He knew Bird had a very bad back by the time the Olympics came around but despite his championships Rodman was never even brought up as a team member. The contreversy was Isiah. No one gave a thought to Rodman instead of Bird and he has admitted it hurt his feelings.
One thing about Rodman’s comment: it was more about how the media covered players, not so much about Bird’s talent. Of course, the media made it all about race … and proved Rodman’s point.
I lived in Houston from ‘83-‘87. I was able to go to an NBA Finals game in ‘86. Boston vs. Houston. It was the game Sampson tried to fight Jerry Schisting. I was 9 years old at the time. To this day, and I’ll never forget this, the 2-man game Bird and Walton played with each other. The unspoken brilliance between them. Houston had the Twin-Towers, Robert Reid, Mitchell Wiggins. They beat a Lakers team in 6 in WCF. Lakers were in middle of their dominant run. The Celtics weren’t as physically talented as Houston. It didn’t matter. That ‘86 Boston team was one of the greatest teams ever. They knew they were going to win. Why? They were the smartest team. With the best player in the league. Larry Joe Bird. We sat close enough where you could not just hear the guys yelling, but talking to each other Bird talked the entire game. I remember this vividly. Coming back from a TV timeout. Bird is inbounding the ball. Robert Reid is in him. Usually the inbounded never gets the ball back. Bird looks at Reid and says “Hey RR, I’m going to throw this ball in, McHale is going to set a screen, if you jump it, I’m going to that corner right over there, and release Death on you.” In the paper that morning, Robert Reid mentioned that his mother called Bird’s jumper Death. Because he never missed from the corner. Robert Reid turned pale, and replied, “I’ll be waiting for you to swat that shit out of bounds” Play starts. Sure as the day is long, Reid tries to go over the top, DJ finds Bird in the corner, he waits for Reid to get close, and shoots this rainbow. As he releases the shot, Bird starts spelling out D E A T H! Swish. The people that overheard that looked around at each other in utter befuddlement. While the rest of the crowd was cheering or booing, about 150 of us were looking at each other in stunned amazement. After we look at each other, like in unison, find Bird. He’s backpedaling down the court right near our sideline, and winks at us! That’s Larry Joe Bird
I lived in Boston when the Birdman was king, but I was a Philly & LA fan! However, I must admit, the Birdman was absolutely the coldest assassin on the court!!!
True. That was the grittiest gutsiest performance I've ever seen being hurt and all. But the one that kills me as a Knicks fan is the 25 points in the 4th quarter by Reggie Miller against the Knicks in 1994 playoffs....even though the Knicks won the last two games and the series in 7 games THAT was a legendary playoff performance
I still think the Atlanta game is the highlight of his career. Doc Rivers (in an interview elsewhere on YT) talks about how pissed off Mike Fratello got watching the film of his guys celebrating Bird's insane shooting, rewind, watch it again, get more pissed, rewind, watch it again...hilarious stuff.
Larry the legend played when NBA stars were not massively overpaid narcissists. He played his whole career with Boston vs. Lefraud changing teams to chase rings. I liked Rodman back in the day as well. Clearly Rodman struggles with his mental health as illustrated by the recent comments about Bird only being able to play in Europe if he played today.
As a Hawks fan in the 80's you just hated Bird. He was def the scariest guy around until Jordan hit his prime. You just knew the Haws were going to lose cuz Bird was going to do something to pull off the win. Worst part about it was you always had the feeling the Hawks players knew that too! 🤣
I always felt that the original controversy about Bird just being “another guy” was an indictment of the media coverage of him and not his skills. It’s weirdly frustrating that this never seems to be addressed or explored
7:06 Larry held the Boston scoring record at 53 when McKale scored 56 (mostly against Kurt Benson, with Bird DELIBERATELY feeding McHale's hot had due to the hate Bird had for Benson). 9 days later, Larry scored 60 vs Atlanta.
I truly enjoy your comments. I think Larry, who was close to his dad, learned the do or die, work through pain, ethic from his father. May Mr. Bird rest in peace.
What younger people don’t realize is Bird did these things in a league that basically allowed assault and battery, just started three point arc, and it was frowned upon, and most of his career with an ever increasingly bad back. The physicality of the NBA at Birds time was light years harder than today. Bird would easily average over 30 now, and most likely would have been far healthier with advances in treatment.
Larry Bird was cold! One of the GOATS! And even though I love Dennis Rodman myself, he's probably trolling! Because if Nikola Jokic and Luka Donsic have similar playing styles, and they're dominating with their high basketball IQ and fundamentals, Larry Bird would kick their asses! I mean he won three straight MVPs and 3 championships in an era where hand-checking was allowed and there was no 3-second defensive rule, and load management was not a thing either! Nuff said!
I love your videos. And you showing the younger generations how great old timers were. They actually used to call traveling. Unless your name was Michael Jordan. But Rodman was great. Not stable and not exactly someone you want talking to the press. This is a guy whose friends with a dictator. I think about his incredible defense and rebounding.
My personal opinion: Lebron James is one of the best individual talents in the history of the league. A phenomenal physical specimen who has worked hard to keep his edge year after year. Denying his greatness is just dishonest. Larry Bird is a phenomenal talent because he can’t run or jump like Lebron but dominated the league in the mid-eighties on sheer heart, determination, and fundamental basketball skills. Larry was a great shooter, but also was a great teammate. A quiet leader who was very verbal against his opposition on the court. A great clutch shooter and floor leader and was just as great a threat with or without the ball.
I love your takes on old school basketball, Michael Jordan is the GOAT period! And your right Sean , Lebron is hurting the image of the L.A. Lakers by being about himself and his own legacy when it should be about the Lakers or whoever he’s playing for! It’s a shame to see! Love the content Sean, keep up the great work!
I am a Pistons fan, so I'll always love Rodman, but it is important to note that the Celtics were to the Pistons, what the Pistons became to the Bulls. Roadblocks for championship runs in which there was lots of bad blood. Pistons learned the rough house defense from the Celts. Detroit copied the not shaking the Bulls hands from the Celts. Both of which were used on the Pistons. I think the skill set between Jokic and Bird is what people compare. Both big guys who can shoot and pass and rebound. But aside from Bird being a different kind of mentality than Jokic, I also think Bird plays a little bit more smooth than Jokic. Jokic isn't clumsy, he's just packing around close to 300 lbs. He doesn't move in the same way that Bird did. Still if Jokic can dominate in the "athlete" era of basketball, being a nearly 300 lb non athlete, then so could Bird.
It’s interesting the different generations of basketball players. Larry Bird played back then he coached he managed, etc. And he still respects today’s NBA players. Today’s NBA players have very little respect for the game back then. Very little respect for their fellow players now. Larry Bird, Magic Johnson they have class. That’s something today’s athletes could learn from them.
Rodman learned years ago how to get his name in the headlines. Make a ridiculous insult to Larry Bird. In Rodman little mind ANY attention is good attention.
Larry Legend videos never get old.

☘️ Larry Legend
Took me a long time to realise it but he is by far the best small forward ever.
His spot is safe as we probably won't see any player with this kind of hustle, mindset, IQ.
The questions isn't, "Could Bird hang in this (or any modern) era?" The question is, "Could this era hang with Bird?"
Larry would dominate in any era. For me, it's not a question of if he could play in this era. It's a question of how these players of this era would react to his trash talk. There might need to be a whole category of therapists to help them cope!

Preach, Brother Isaiah. I’m not saying Bird is the greatest player ever, but he’s the first one I’d pick for my team.

One thing that gets overlooked is how fundamentally sound as a player he was.
Jerry West was quoted in the 80s as saying young players should model themselves after Larry, not
Magic, as he was the most fundamentally sound

BIRD was a Man on Fire
Larry Bird is the BEST ALL-AROUND PLAYER EVER!!! TOP FIVE PLAYER OF ALL-TIME. Magic, Michael, Bird, Russell, Wilt. Nobody's beating that team.
Did I hate LB back in the day? As a lifelong Pistons fan what do you think? Is Larry Bird in the conversation for GOAT? Abso-freaking-lutely.
Rodman was a fantastic player. But he’s not the kind of guy whose opinion matters.
Rodman learned years ago how to get his name in the headlines.
Make a ridiculous insult to Larry Bird.
In Rodman little mind ANY attention is good attention.
