Shaq told a story about when he was in Orlando, MJ came in strong and Shaq absolutely clobbered him to the ground. Shaq felt bad b/c Jordan was his idol so he went to help him back up, but Jordan said it was a good foul and to never help up an opponent.

One of the reasons why the current NBA is viewed as soft is because hand-checking is no longer allowed.
Putting a hand on the offensive player was part of NBA defenses for so long that when the NBA removed it in 2004, the league changed forever.
Once the hand-check was banned, offensive players took over the league.
With the NBA taking away one of its biggest weapons against an offensive player, teams adjusted how they played defense, and the physicality we saw during the 80s and the 90s was suddenly gone.

@@trolln_then why is nobody watching? The average person on the street has no idea who won the finals and they don’t care. Viewership has been in steep decline for 20 years now. The “face of the league” LeBronze has been in three of the lowest rated finals of all time. You’re dreaming if you think it’s as popular as it was 20-30 years ago. So yes, people do like watching a balanced game as evidenced by the peak popularity and it experienced decades ago now. It’s so unwatchable that TNT doesn’t even care if they get games anymore. If the league was in a healthy place TNT would be fighting to retain rights but they don’t so that should tell you everything you need to know. Which means it was different in the past. The hurdles to greatness were higher. The skill and ability development was organic. That means the stars and super stars were innovators in the sport. They were legitimately better thinkers and doers. How come that's not taken into account? The hard fouls of today may not have been called in the past. 3 pointers weren't shot and hand checking was the norm. The lane was clogged and you had to be a super hero to get through, both in ability and mentality. Centers were defensive juggernauts the jammed the key and swatted high flyers. "Defense wins championships" was a storied mantra. He thinks Big O couldn't beat people off the Dribble and make it to the rim in today's NBA?! He had to fight through people in his era!

Soft and less competitive. In a lot of games players are content with shooting from the perimeter because they cant be touched and let the game be decided by a coin flip basically, whoever shoots closer to 50% wins that night. Thats the real problem, before, teams would not be content by that, they would do everything in their power to win, that means penetrate, put the other team in foul trouble, its not just softer it lacks any tactical point, because the players refuse to do their job and sacrifice for the team so they just pin themselves 45 degrees to the basket if they missed "oh well it was a good shot selection" instead of going for the high value shots.

It used to be a Men’s game, where they tried to beat the shit out of each other on the court, and be friends after the game was finished. But now they are soft on the court and pretend to be tough guys off the court, or in case of Ben Simmons, soft on the court and even softer off the court.
Ben Simmons should repay the Sixers and the Nets every single dime that he has “earned” for being a fraud, he doesn’t belong on the court, let alone sitting next to it.
But the fact that most players do not even try to play all the 82 games during a season, because it is too much, says enough.

Bron Stans have to rationalize every single facet of basketball in the most distortive ways in order to create a post-hoc rationale for his shortcomings including, but not limited to, pooping on every other era to make it seem like THIS era has the most talent and is the most difficult, over-inflating the value of his accomplishments and stats by failing (intentionally) to properly contextualize them, ignoring his substandard finals record compared to other greats, and ignoring the fact he's played with more talent than any player in NBA history.
Harden took KD Warriors to 7 games, Bron won ONE GAME vs KD Warriors in two years lol.
    LeOverrated.
I really wish we could get a random sampling of 1000 Bron fans and 1000 fans of any other player and just measure their IQs. I suspect Bron fans would lose that battle.

  • @THE-MAD-TECHIE
    @THE-MAD-TECHIE 4 месяца назад +2

To me it is more about the mental softness than the physical calls. And its not just basketball, In the 1980s and 90s you got Bird playing with a fractured Cheek bone and messed up back, MJ playing with the Flu and food poisoning multiple times, But today in the NFL a few years ago back when he was with the Texans Jadaveon Clowney was listed as unable to play due to the FLU, I could understand limiting him to two plays per series ...and he was healthy enough he was on the sideline. But MJ played over 30 min so sick he could barely stand. And in basketball players "load mange" they basically take a day off because they are sore. My HS coach used to say are you hurt or are you injured...if your Hurt you tough it out, if you injured we bring out the doctor and check you out. Players cannot tough it out through the little things and if they feel the offense is not running through them enough they want a trade (Harden, Kyrie, KD, and Westbrook to name a few...they have all requested multiple trades because it was not their way....WEAK minded.)

Cream and Crimson Hoosier here. I loooove this new ball. Reminds me of the time before 3 pointers and shot clocks. Three seconds was still called, and you could still find Chuck Taylors squeekin' on the floor. So, I got a bit of perspective. (I think I'm Chief's age.) It's like a manic 4 corners out there. They get done in 35 seconds what used to take about 4 minutes. The back door screens passed up shots, somebody streaking down the lane for a layup (Dunk). Watch some old 4 corners and come back. As far as I'm concerned, they may not be beating each other up; yet this is the progression and maybe apex of the game so far.

I want a two 3pt lines if you chucking too many three's per half you will have to shoot behind the penalty line that's further back and cuts out the corners. It's obvious threes are much more valuable than two's so, so you got to disincentivize three's as a go to shot and more as a sharp shooter shot. Make shooting and defending three's a strategy and not a dependency again.

Back in the 1980's the NBA was tough, rough and I watched teams like the Celtics, Lakers, Sixers, Bucks, Rockets, Jazz, Pistons and some other teams play defense then have playoff series that go to seven games where the defense was played inside the paint with the post moves then players weren't going to get easy baskets and if they did they had to earn it. So in this era of the NBA the players don't do this style of play because chucking up three pointer so much, shooting from way outside the arc so much. Then baskets be so easy to get in this era to where guys don't even play upwards to the :24 second clock or whatever. So now I don't watch games these days because of the style of play also because of the bad network coverage mainly from ESPN/ABC because they change broadcasters, analysts, studio hosts to where they're really bad. TNT's coverage of the NBA is a little than ESPN /ABC , but still pull away from the games because they're aren't interesting anymore as they used to be back in the 1980's, 1990's there.

As a recent NBA fan I just want to say I can appreciate the physicality of the old game but I also respect how it is now because if I'm playing ball I feel like I'm playing the sport not playing to be pushing and shoving and hurting people. That's football or it makes me think of wanting to see people fight in a Colleaseum in ancient Rome. Like we don't do that ish anymore but I can also understand as men why we still want that physicality. It makes me think of playing soccer and how people would shove and push and my thing was that's not how you play. You're supposed to try to get the ball from me without pushing and shoving. And I have a similar idea of basketball where you should be trying to get the ball from me, not attacking my body. But idk, maybe I just didn't appreciate the physicality and didn't understand that aspect. I just feel like it takes skill to get the ball away vs just having a bigger/stronger body and go for my body vs going for the ball. So it's something that I think I can understand the physicality better now but I also understand wanting to be playing for the ball vs the body. If you want to have a challenge of physical strength do wrestling lol. But I also am a recent basketball fan so I can't speak to what the game used to be

Removed handchecking after Lebeons rookie season.
What was firat thing I noticed when watching him?
Hes clumsy..and although quick for his size...even in his primw needed a screen or to break offensive rules to get by his man.
COINCIDENCE the year after he joins, defense is handicapped?
Then as the next few years went on...missing playoffs first 2 years, Hughes coming in helped..
But they also allowed obvious travelling from Lebron from time to time..
    Comnentators joked about it..
Within a few years guy would come into the lane..taking 3 steps as he gets cut off..
Then pivot one foot, then the bother foot, then back to the first foot, step back and shoot..
    AGGREGIOUS Violations.
In 2005 getting an extra step gere and there...
    To
Taking 7, 8 steps in certain situations uncalled.. by 2009 this was juat a normal part of his game we see still now.
They handicapped defenses so 1 guy who they invested so much into...could WIN and pull good stat averages.
Theres already guys in the league that if they stay healthy will dwarf his stats if they go till 40...caus now everyone gets more inflated stats due to it being far yoo obvious if you dont slowly allow others to bemd the rules too.. (Like originally Harden...now the whole league).
They going to let people dwarf those stats and keep losing older fans?
    Or
Change back the rules knowing itmifht get our trust back and protect his stats in the process?

The one dribble past the three point line with that big ole gather step and dunk is one of the biggest reason mid ranges and post up have become a less desirable.shot. That and teams chucking up three without any impunity on that shot. Create a second 3pt line for chucking too many three's , a penalty 3 point line. and watch the game drastically change. All that floor spacing will go away if they have to shoot three's further back and with no corners to shoot from.

It's a shame... that people can't reflect even further.
Every time I see "they were men then" I remember Reggie Miller talking about how gaming his sister was a lesson in physicality. It has nothing to do with "being men", it's about engaging the adversity.
I see people talking about 3 points corners, fouls, travel, palming... and praising the 90's like Parker wasn't consistently palming, like Barkley or Kemp weren't travel kings (you could basically travel all the way as long as you dunked in the end), like Hack-a-Shaq didn't relied on minor fouls being called. And the 3 points line was moved several times since its creation without affecting the percentage.
I do agree that it was less of a system in the 90's, but the NBA has always been about the show more than the fair, and what has changed is how they consider the show: both betting and the inflation of wages have made the showrunners (players) more valuable (can't trade an injured player for the same sum as a fit one, can't bet on him). If you want to name on who is responsible, it's not the players - some may be whiners, there were always some even back in the day - but I'd say both the NBA's heads and the Charlotte Hornets were responsible for this.
See, the Hornets was the first team that relied that heavy on merch sales completely unrelevant to how good they were, relying on highlights fitting the 90's narrative about fighting spirit and individual success despite never being a winning team - why the Hornets and not for example the spectacular Sonics? Because the Hornets' owners were a fund. A fund doesn't decide to engage the same way, the point is profit, not sportsmanship, not love of the game; numbers. And when this numbers only approach begun, the reign of numerical and money value was achieved, stats led the game, creating scoring monsters (and favorizing ball hogs), decreasing defense.
That's hard to admit because these 90's highlights and contested game were what brought us to the NBA - I *was* a Hornets fan (wondering then why they underplayed sharp shooters like Rice, Gill, Chapman or then underrated now overrated Curry Sr). But the highlights mentality was precisely what stayed, only with less financial risks, that is less contact, less playing time, less defense - less game. Refs followed the trend to swallow even more the whistle when "great" players were in game to the point it's absurd.
Now there are places where game have both outside of the perimeter shooting and physical engagement, but they play less games. So rather than blame the effect (soft game), blame the disease and engage differently.
