This is the story of singapore airlines flight 006. The 31st of october 2000 on the island of taiwan it was a dark and windy night. Flight 006 was hoping to get airborne soon as a typhoon was bearing down on the island. The pilots had been flying the plane since the day before and they had been all over the world from singapore to los angeles and taipei. At 9:53 pm that night the pilots completed their pre flight briefings and picked up the NOTAMS or notice to airmen for the night, it contained important information that someone flying here should know. At 10:57 pm the pilots got clearance from ATC, the ATIS transmission could be heard in the background, telling them that the departure runway was 5L Wind was at 020 at 36 gusting to 52 and visibility was 450 meters or 1500 feet, the rain beat down on the airport marking the arrival of the typhoon.
the captain was the one flying and At 11:05 pm the pilots got permission to taxi and they were given their taxi clearance ““Singapore six, taxi to Runway zero six, via Taxiway, correction, Runway zero five left, via Taxiway Sierra Sierra, West Cross, and November Papa.”, The copilot said ““I missed that man, what is it,” the captain repeated the clearance for him.
After this the crew engaged in chatter about how they'd get to runway 5L, they also talked about alternate airports because Hong Kong and Kaohsiung were closed. As they taxied the captain said “a lot of rudder work man here...,am going to go very slow here because you going get skid.”, The plane was on the ground and the wind was so strong that the pilots had a bit of trouble with the wind. As they taxied onto taxiway november papa they were transferred over to the tower. “Singapore six good evening, Taipei tower hold short runway five left.” The first officer acknowledged. The first officer said “next one is november one” referring to the taxiway that they had to be on to get to runway 5L, ok second right the captain responded, the first officer agreed. As they taxied the tower gave them the all clear. “Singapore six, Runway zero five left, wind zero two zero at two eight gust to five zero, cleared for takeoff.”
At11:15 pm the crew were done with the takeoff checklist and they made the right turn onto the runway, they were very careful as the rain had made everything really slippery. With them on the runway the first officer said the PVD or the para visual display hadnt lined up yet. To which the captain replied yeah we gotta line up first. But even when they had lined up the PVD was not aligned but the captain said that they could see the runway and so it wasnt that big of an issue.
At 11:16 and 44 seconds they started their takeoff roll, the first officer called out 80 knots. The captain said “something there” which was followed by the first sounds of impact. Flight 006 had collided with construction equipment, they had not taken off from runway 5L. The right gear slammed into some construction equipment and the left landing gear went over a pit in the runway blowing a tire. The plane then headed straight into an excavator damaging the lower left side of the plane. The stabilizer was hit by debris and failed. There was a bit of rebar on the left side of the runway and engine number one struck that, the plane now started to yaw to the left. The plane then hit two steam rollers and broke into two the right wing was sheared off.
The plane hit the equipment 4000 feet from the runway threshold, the plane broke into two and it skidded along the runway spewing broken bits of debris everywhere.Unfortunately 179 people onboard, only 96 people made it. This is todate the only incident for singapore airlines which resulted in fatalities.

My dad was supposed to be on this flight and would most likely have been killed in the crash, considering that he was supposed to sit on the upper deck in the First Class section. He was going on a business trip and really didn't want to miss the flight because of the incoming typhoon. My mom (who worked for Singapore Airlines at the time) told him that she could get her colleagues on shift to help him change his flight to the next available flight after the typhoon. My dad really didn't want to, but because my mom had found out that she was pregnant with me that day, she managed to convince my dad to not board the plane. And the next morning, when my dad woke up at home, he started getting calls from all his colleagues. They didn't expect him to pick up the phone and answer them, but they were all relieved to hear that my dad hadn't boarded Flight 006 that crashed during the middle of the night.

Only a portion of the runway was able to be used as a taxiway. The rest of the runway should have completely blocked of with bright orange barrels with lights on top of them. Hundreds of barrels. Two or three rows of barrels spaced just one meter apart. Humans lives, not to mention the aircraft, are certainly worth more than one thousand barrels to block off that runway! Analog, and digital signs, multiple signs telling you that the runway is closed. The fact that ATC couldn't see the plane should have been a huge res flag. The tower shouldn't have given them the clear until someone on the ground could go out and physically confirm that the aircraft was on the correct runway!

Taoyuan International Airport later decommissioned runway 5R into taxiway NC and renamed the south runway from runway 6 to runway 5R. Ground radar was installed to aid aircraft movements in bad weather after the accident report placed partial blame on the airport's facilities being inadequate and outdated. Maybe use red lights to indicate danger and put several signs up saying runway closed along the runway?...Just use common sense. Also I thought planes were monitored or controlled while taxing on the ground in poor visibility at major international airports? If ATC can't visually see the Aircraft taxing surely they can monitor them on radar? Very tragic and avoidable accident.

Another perspective is that Taiwan is not a UN member state, and therefore, Taipei’s Taoyuan Airport isn’t subject to the same ICAO oversight as most of the airports in the world. This could have resulted in the closed Runway 05R not having the usual markings and lights (i.e. the big lighted “X” at each end) that would indicate that it was a closed runway.

How could anyone have missed that, and so even if the runway was painted a big "X" wouldn't have made any difference if nobody was paying attention including the F/O and flight engineer. Take notice too the captain would be repeating which runway he was taking off on, he would be saying "Cleared for takeoff, RUNWAY FIVE LEFT, SINGAPORE SIX, thank you Tower and good night".

More people killed by improper airport construction procedures. 1) barrel off closed runways so they can't turn down the runway, 2) when workers finish, they get everything off the runway that is practical, 3) clearly light anything that must be left on runway, 4) designate pink as "danger, closed runway" (or a new color) and run them down the middle of the entire runway to prevent accidental landings (Mexico City crash).

ILS offset was their second warning. I'm a low time pilot of small planes. Taxiing at a medium to large airport that is unfamiliar is the most challenging part of aviation I've encountered. I always ask ground control for turn by turn instructions at big and unfamiliar airports. GPS should have and display airport diagrams to prevent wrong turns while taxiing.

I took off from Hong Kong that very same evening and landed at that airport in Taiwan about 1 hour before the crash. I was on one of the last flights to Taiwan before they closed the Hong Kong airport. As I was on the way home in the taxi, I heard the news...

Rumour has it it's because of this incident that SQ no longer has any special liveries, and if there are, they're repainted to the standard livery asap. Or so that's what local spotters say anyway. Tragic accident. :(

Western Airlines Flight 2605 possibly? That was a DC-10 that landed on the wrong runway in Mexico City and struck an excavator, interestingly exactly 21 years earlier than Singapore Airlines Flight 006, on October 31, 1979.

ATC should have ground radar following

  • @Flies2FLL
    @Flies2FLL 3 года назад

This accident is easy to do.
Taxiways named via the phonetic alphabet are difficult to think about, and runway changes should be made basically illegal, in my view. You should receive your taxi clearance and runway assignment as part of your clearance via CPDCL or initial clearance over the radio, and the controller should repeat the clearance to you when you request a taxi clearance. If they really need you to take off from another runway, this should be communicated as soon as possible and pilots should be required to STOP WHERE THEY ARE and reprogram the MCDU and re-check the performance numbers. Pilots screw up clearances all the time, and we are going to eventually have another event like the Tenerife 747 collision if this isn't handled this way....

Sigh. So many ... why not question why the ILS and the instruments said "you are off to the right"? The tower should have you on radar, or at least be able to explain why the ILS is borked ...
Why not asking the tower: "Why is the runway lit up as a taxi way?"
So many ... "hey, that's strange' moments.
Did they have neither GPS nor INS?

You really tell a story well. In this instance the pilots really messed up. Taxiing out to the runway for takeoff was perhaps not the best time to be discussing weather possibilities in Hong Kong. There are key times when complete focus is required and getting onto the proper runway should be one of them.

They knew it was the second right, but it almost looks like they counted the first right toward both runways, rather than NOT counting the first right. This would put them on what they thought was the "second right". Hard to believe it, but true.

What's with the crazy livery? That is one colorful plane. A little tacky but I like it. Also I'd say this is ATC's fault. They should've warned the crew about the runway being maintained just in case the pilots didn't remember the NOTAM, it's easy to forget things when you're occupied with something else.
