We were the last plane to land in Chicago during a major winter storm. Probably because we were coming from Tokyo. Definitely should have been diverted. It was scary stuff, we ended up off the runway. It just shows how much pressure these guys are under to keep operations going ... and they can make the wrong call.
That sounds absolutely terrifying. The thing about plane incidents that scare me is how you don't have controll over the situation, and if the plane is doomed, you are too. If the plane breaks apart mid air, or crashes during a storm than everyone is screwed.
Basically the captain overrules his own first officer's concern...reminds me of Captain Van Zanten on Tenerife's KLM 4805
Jacob still haunts the north Tenerife airport to this day
Or the guy on an alitalia flight who overruled his copilot go around ending up with the plain crashing in the alps
I think 2 major factors were in play the first officer should have asked the captain if he was on the correct runway, secondly I think the atc control should have said can you please confirm you on taking off on 5L.
Construction equipment should have orange flashing beacons at all times even when not in use if on a runway

If the runway is not in use then why runway lights were kept on. If the lights have been switched off no pilot would take that runway. Next is why the starting point of the runway was not blocked.
As far as the first question, not a clue but it should be the standard for when a runway is not in use. As to the second, It's not a good idea to have barriers or other items that could potentially be sucked into an engine or damage other parts of an aircraft. FOD (Foreign Object Debris) can be devastating to an aircraft, just look at Concorde, brought down by FOD.

What about the huge ass sign saying 05R? Plus even the flight computer was not locking on the beacon. Indicating that this is not the correct runway. This is totally pilot error.

This surface was now a TAXIWAY with GREEN CENTRE LINE LIGHTING and BLUE TAXIWAY EDGE LIGHTING. ..

Hey but even then the first officer calls out v1 long before they crashed into the construction equipment so after v1 you know the plane rotates the next second so couldn't have they lifted the plane off please answer this question
it looks like over confidence on the pilot side, and co-pilot that dares not question the pilot decision...
It's just like Korean airlines, where the first officer scared to say to the captain
They were more in a rush and going quite slow because high winds and typhoon was edging every so close to the airport.

I believe (and I could be wrong) that a human factors expert said in the episode that it was likely that the captain was thinking about taking off ASAP to beat the storm, which impacted his decision-making.
I wonder why the controllers didn't warn the pilot. This crash could be easily prevented. Playing with the lives of innocent passengers must not be tolerated.
The airport had no ground radar at the time, and because of the bad visibllity the plane wasn't visible from the tower. There was no way for atc to know they were on the wrong runway.

The airport gave a warning or fyi papers letting them know it was there. The rest of the info is on the short clip.
@@gohweihongbowenss4560 airports dont really put signs up they just turn off the lights and that signals a closed runway. Based on my knowledge.
@@lord_dequavis9552 you're right, the airport gave them the notam's (notice to airmen, basically a list with unusual things like maintenance) where it was mentioned that the runway was closed. The crew was well aware of this, they just got disorientated because of the bad weather and ended up on the wrong runway. Why wasn’t there a barricade at both ends of the runway to prevent this from happening? Such a simple solution to prevent a fatal accident
The pilots lost their jobs and were blamed for the whole disaster. That seems very unfair. Yes, they made mistakes but common sense would indicate the runway with construction should have been completely closed off.

It was absurd to put heavy construction equipment out on a runway without first setting up baracades at each end and altering the lighting to clearly abnormal configuration and colors. Think how highways handle a construction zone. Leaving on normal runway lights is simply a death trap for both incoming and outgoing. Two of my colleagues were on that plane and myself on 006 a day earlier in better visibility weather.
It was along with some of the taxiway lighting leading towards runway 05L was not working, these factors along with pilot error is what caused the accident

Totally avoidable shitshow. At a major airport everything with wheels should have its lights on even when off-duty & parked for the night. Why was it sitting there in the dark ( yes runway closed, still ) like that could have left a generator with a big spotlight on it all night like an Interstate construction site it's cheap insurance. In the aftermath, I hope this captain got his "just desserts"

The amount of stress and pressure of being a pilot especially in heavy weather increases a pilots work load by a ton. Easy to judge as a viewer.
