I watched your video when I was learning how to take apart my new PK380 and clean it. I showed my husband your technique and the very first try, I got it done in seconds, and with no pain! I've tried a couple of other techniques and can't do them. They hurt my fingers and hand. My husband says it takes him forever to load a spring and will be trying your technique the next time he reassembles his gun. Thank you so much for your videos.
Revisited this post since watching four years ago when I bought my pk380. Absolutely the best, and only method to use. Great presentation, and also very soothing.
Bless you, William! My nephew gifted me with a used PK380 (the perfect Mother's Day gift for me), but it didn't come with Owner's Manual so I had no clue as to the breakdown for cleaning! Nephew suggested your most informative videos, and he was so right. Your tutorial is excellent, and I got this weapon open (even without the "special tool" which was also missing), got the spring out and back in with little trouble. I think this PK380 will be my new favorite weapon! Thank you for your video!
That is a really smart way of putting that spring and guide rod back into the slide. I am going to use that method next time I take mine apart for a cleaning. Awesome video and excellent advice. Thumbs up my friend.
Someone had a video that shows an even better way to do it, but it was years ago, so I don't really remember the specific video. But this way really does work, and it's quick and relatively easy.
I could not figure the reassembly out until this video. I figured it was going to be similar to my 1911 when I saw the ginormous spring but it was still eluding me. Thanks!!
The spring trick is very useful. The P22, while set up a little different, can be a bit of a booger too. Got the PK380 for my youngest daughter who is recoil sensitive and left handed, and she loves it.
Thanks Bill, your technique for getting the spring reset is right on. After wrestling with it for 1/2 an hour, I went back to your video, which I had seen a few days ago, and had it set on my 1st. try. Now if I could just shoot straight. Nice video, thanks again.
Great tip on spring. I have shot about 200 rds thru this pistol now with some visible wear on the barrel exterior surface and the ramp has a few gouges. I am cleaning every 50 or 60 rds and using good quality cleaner and lubricant. The gun fires fine with zero misfires/jams and am still dialing in the sights. Overall I like it and my wide also enjoys shooting it as well.
Thank you very much for the tip on how to re-install that spring! I've been struggling with that! I agree with you in the fact that this is an excellent handgun. I have owned mine for awhile now, and my wife and I both enjoy shooting it. I had some minor feed problems when I first started shooting mine, but after we had shot 150 to 200 rounds through it we did not experience any more problems. The gun now functions perfectly.
Thanks for the tip on being able to use tweezers. That little tool got misplaced, going to order another, but haven't been touching the pk380 because I was afraid of disassembly without the proper tool! Off I go to fetch the cleaning kit :D
I’ve been carrying a Ruger SR22 because my 70+ arthritic hands don’t handle recoil very well. I tried a PK380 as a rental at the range a few weeks ago and was delighted with the low recoil - not really much more than my SR22 loaded with Stingers. In addition, it is almost exactly the same size as the Ruger, just a bit thicker, and nearly the same weight. As soon as the budget allows, I will have one. It can even be ordered with a factory fit laser, something I find very handy due to vision problems in my dominant eye.
Great video...great teacher. Was having trouble with getting the spring back in and not even really sure where it went....even after watching other videos. Your video made it really simple and do-able. Thank You! Would have liked to see you put the top back on too.
If you like the feel and operation of your P22, other than the decock you describe you'll like the 380 a lot and the manual of arms is almost identical, all the way down to the mag. ejection--which I like quite a bit, personally.
Please don't use tweezers as a replacement takedown tool. You will oval out the hole. Instead hit your local auto parts store and get a Tire Vale Core too. $3, and it fists like a dream.
I just bought the gun three things I hate.....the decocker hate having to pull the trigger to decock....mag release just feels strange....breakdown hate having to use dedicated tools. That being said it shoots great
Thanks did it the first try I think this gun is brilliant design very easy to clean everything is right there once it is opened I work on cars and say Mercedes and Porsches are pretty brilliant as well it's just a different mechanical language people need to realize different technologies.Purchased a pink one for my wife I love my Walthers PPQ M2 is My Choice Great Demo brother*****
Thank you for making the field strip easy. I have Glocks, Barettas Taurus, and Walthers. I gotta admit that Walthers, although awesome weapons, are the most difficult to stip. My PPKS release is not one I am a fan of. But at this point, I want you to know I appreciate your step by step directives. Thank you!
Thank you for posting. Very good info. Just bought a PK 380 yesterday and was very frustrated withe guide rod spring replacement. In my 70'' and purchased due to ease of racking and its left handed friendliness..Bob. In NC
Want to give an update on my PK 380. So far it is shooing flawlessly: very little recoil & taking a variety of ammo. So we're looking at a very dependable pistol here; is easy to control, to breakdown, and an excellent size for conceal carry...the price makes it an excellent value. Just ordered a CZ 83 .380. Will review it in a few weeks. My CZ 83 .32 shoots super; almost zero recoil. Hope the .380 shoots as well-it was voted pistol of the year in its class for 2010.
After driving my gun dealer crazy with repeatedly handling every automatic in his display case, the PK380 is the gun i went with....Ergonomics is important to shooting well, especially with an EDC.
Just got this gun. Got a good deal. Feels great in the hand... but the more I handle it the less I see the need for the takedown key PLUS the agony of that spring for takedown. But I guess to break it down and clean/oil once a month may not be too bad. We'll see.
@OrangeJackson If you have gun shows in your area you might find a mag there. Some of the businesses that come to gun shows specialize in having lots of mags for the different models. Don't know if there are any third party mags or not, but it's worth a shot. Also, looks like Mec Gar makes a third party mag--I have one now that I recall, and it works great. Just google walther pk380 magazine and it will pop up near the top of the list. PK380 is an excellent pistol.
Love this gun and you Sir are a great teacher! What did put me off about this pistol is the Field strip. Dont like the tool thing and also the way the spring sits. Other than that. Great gun and if you dont mind the strip and tool and all that. Then get if. GREAT pistol for women.
Thanks, The manual that comes with it is not very good and you are right There is very little info online, I could not find for the life of me the release of the magazine.
@cell21d Yes, I like mine more and more. Very good with ammo--taking a variety of brands without any jamming. And it shoots very accurately, with little recoil....very smooth. Glad you like the review.
This was excellent! I have this gun and a few others. Love it. Walther is the king of 380's. For those who say it's a light weight load. Bullshit. Would u want to step in front of a 380 hollowpoint? I doubt it. A+ video. Thnx
@petersusia1 When I've tripled checked the gun, there's no mag in and the breech is open wide open, I reserve the right to handle the gun the way I feel I need to in order to properly disassemble, clean it and reassemble it. There is a difference between reasonable safety and madness. Let's face it, even a loaded, double-action gun, uncocked with a 10 pound trigger pull is not going to go off unless some body pulls that trigger--and it's not easy to pull.
I'm looking to get a PK380. Right now I have a P22 and the P22 requires a magazine to be loaded to decock because it's supposedly a safety feature where the gun requires a magazine to be loaded for the trigger to have any effect. It's really annoying at times!
A few years ago, when we got our PK380, we were very frustrated with trying to re-assemble the spring. My wife went into pure panic mode. Then we found this video. 😀 Thank you so much.
Just FYI; the spring re-assembly method I present is simple, quick, effective and easy. Otherwise the spring is really a time-consuming frustration that will discourage people from cleaning it. I think Walther should include a tool and present a method on their site that makes it easy. Otherwise, many people may not buy the gun--especially when there are others that shoot well but are easy to clean and reassemble. Too bad--this is a great gun at a great price!
Thanks for posting this video. Now I can teach my cousin how to take down this pistol. She thinks she misplaced the tool to unlock the slide release. I guess we may have to try the tweezer method. I dislike that it requires that tool. It seems like a pain to take down and clean if you happen to be out in the field. She is a lefty so this is a good pistol for her. I like the way it shoots but there are definitely some features I dislike. Overall it's a nice little pistol.
You forgot the safety. Hammer down or in the fired position with the SAFETY in the fire position to remove the slide & barrel. Removing the guide rod spring isn't really necessary if you use a product like Hoppes Barrel Blaster spray and then use a bit of spray oil, mopping off the excess with bore patches or Q Tip swabs. Gotta be careful what you put on a plastic polymer frame these days.
I'm glad you were helped by a video. Teaching is what I did for 15 years. I have a secret I use for teaching: I assume everyone I'm speaking to is as ignorant and dumb as I am....seems to work.
Your video implies that if you loose the takedown tool you can't get a replacement. Believing that I started looking for tweezers or small pliers to use in place of the tool. Since the hole is oval and not round it's harder than it looks to get that [horizontal] part turned all the way around 170*. Next, I looked the gun up at waltherarms.com and shazam, the key is available. It's over priced at $10 but you can get one. (For me the tire valve core tool won't work because the hole on my pk380 is oval shaped.)
Hello, and thanks for taking the time it takes to do these great reviews. I just bought my Wife a Walther p22q, however I wonder if I should trade up to a Walther 380 when we get to pick it up Monday. This will be her first gun. I also bought a tiny Taurus PT25, because I just wanted a really small gun. Is that an OK gun to have in a collection and not as an EDC. My EDC is a CZ 75 db and sometime a Browning Hi Power 9mm. Again, thanks a bunch, Chad.
Three years out and I just now view your Walther PK380 review. Had I seen it three years ago I would have known how good the PK389 is but thanks for YOUR review! I am a potential 1st time buyer and after having researched a lot of other models, the PK380 seems like a good, stout 1st time buy! QUESTION: Would you recommend it Mr. Ridenour? [thank you in advance!]
Can you give me some dimensions of the barrel using your calipers? I need the OD of the larger bell and the length of the bell that is on the end of the barrel. Also the OD of the main portion of the barrel. I assume the ID is .356"! I want to verify that enough material is on the barrel so a threaded extension (for a suppressor) can be added before making a purchase. Thank you kindly.
Walther uses the similar trigger as Glock, only better, with the PPQ 9 and 40 mm pistols. I own a PPQ--great SAO pistol--the best trigger around. But you'll have to ask Walther why they don't put the SAO on the .380. I'd prefer it too, but there is something to be said for DA first shot. Or, you could carry cocked and locked. I don't. I carry one in the chamber, DA first shot, safety off. PK380---fine .380 pistol.
There is no decocker. Put the gun on safety and pull the trigger while easing the hammer forward--nothing to be concerned with. Mag release is superior in my view to the button mag release. Very hard to accidentally trip it. Get used to the tool for breakdown--it's far from a pain to do. Just give it a chance. Do shoot great. I carry it everywhere.
i like your review style i found it informational and entertaining. i was kinda concerned over your muzzle awareness at certain points in the video. i understand that the firearm had been cleared but i feel the key to maintaining gun safety is with consistently following safety protocol( standard rules of fire arm safety) i dont mean to be rude or condescending by saying this and i still really enjoyed your video.
I own a original Walther pk and a original German made nazi pk and carry a Walther pk 380 just like that one and never had any problems with any of my Walther s
Just grab the end of the rod with sharp nose pliers (you’re more likely to have these than true needle nose anyway) after you put the spring on and put the assembly right in place. Easy, doesn’t require a whole table, and the rod is hardened and likely won’t even show a scratch. Our PK380 is so inaccurate the name Walther is now a curse. Bullets come out of the barrel in random directions! The name is anathema!! Wish they’d buy this hunk of junk back!
Please help!! I can not take mine apart to save my life. I put the tool in and rotate it all the way around. I don't hear a click like some people do but it seems to rotate all the way. But the take town lever will not come down. I have tried everything to the point where I think it's going to break. I have heard you just have to shoot it a bit but I've also put about 60 rounds through it already and still no luck. I don't know if the tool won't rotate to the point to unlock it or if the lever is simply stuck but it's driving me crazy. I can't have a gun I can't takedown. And yes it's unloaded, clip out, safety on and hammer uncocked.
Thanks I am about to go buy one anyone have any more info for me. I want a Walter pk 380 like one u show. I can't find one to shoot at gun range any info will help I'm 6,5 and have big hands friend has one with larger grip fit me like a glove. I have a bad. Back so I think this will be a great tool for me. Please give me any info if anyone has anything thanks
It just strikes me as completely whacko to have a tool required for disassembly when other manufacturers prove that it's obviously not needed. One would think that a .380 would be geared for simplicity, not the opposite.
i think this gun in this size and caliber is completely worthless. It may appeal to some recoil sensitive people, but that it is. for that size, you could easily have a glock 19 and have 15 rounds of 9mm for the same size. There are guns that have their place in the lineup, but a big 380 is not one of them.
I liked how it shot at the range. But, this thing is a PITA to field strip and reassemble. Mainly that cheap rod spring that is difficult as all get out to re-install? Particularly us old farts that may have arthritis in the hands. And in a .380! My Glock 19 is much easier to strip, clean, and maintain. And that silly key to unlock the slide? Come on, make it something easy to use to break the action down!

I’ve had my PK since December of last year and I love it. This is one of the best reviews of the PK ever, oh and very nice video quality.
Thank you much good sir. I was having quite the hateful time with the spring during reassembly. Your advice worked like a charm.
thank you for the review. love the pk 380 but the guide spring was imposible for me to put back in the slide until I watched your video. thanks again.

You can also use a tire valve stem tool available at any auto parts store to unlock the take down.
getting the spring back in was a bugger but after doing it your way this gun is a cake walk to break down...Thanks

Add bad maching, cheap construction and really odd design quirks.
"like an evil serpent" lol

I had the same model gun, James. That feature irritated me too. The PK 380, needless to say, doesn't have that.

Absolutely. It can save your life--and it shoots very well.

You are a great teacher!
I don't. Does the hammer come forward just short of the fireing pin, when you pull the triggor with the safety on?
No, part of the pin mechanism rotates and forms a block when safety is put on
There is no decocker.
Hi thanks for the video.
Wath kind of holster do you recommend?
excellent video..Great job.
my wife just got one--------just subbed you . Thanks
Is a seven round clip one in hole
wqhy don't walther use a encapsuled spring system.(as Glock do) much easier to use.
@avarmadillo
i apolagize if you took offence. it was not my intention to be rude.
I lost my damn key, and i cannot find a new one, not at Walter, Not even on eBay, any suggestions?
Valve stem remover will work.
I'd take it back to the gun shop where you bought it, or to a gun smith.
Good video 👍
Thanks I am about to go buy one anyone have any more info for me. I want a Walter pk 380 like one u show. I can't find one to shoot at gun range any info will help I'm 6,5 and have big hands friend has one with larger grip fit me like a glove. I have a bad. Back so I think this will be a great tool for me. Please give me any info if anyone has anything thanks
@secamend75 I like the hat too--I wear it a lot--all the time, in and out of election time; freedom never goes out of season.
It just strikes me as completely whacko to have a tool required for disassembly when other manufacturers prove that it's obviously not needed. One would think that a .380 would be geared for simplicity, not the opposite.
People must really have a hard time with that spring. Laughing out loud.
It’s amazingly hard without some trick. Grab the end of the rod with small pliers and put it right in.
Great
8 round, one in the hole
i think this gun in this size and caliber is completely worthless.
I thought my method for reinstalling the spring was pretty easy. But I saw another that was even easier on youtube, but I can't recall where.
Yeah, there's a video, or two, using a cleaning rod through the hole where the recoil spring goes. I haven't tried it yet but it looks easier.
