    Big, bad, metal male with a needle and thread. This is awesome. I'll tell my mum that sewing is so metal.

      Like cooking, it's a pretty useful life skill for everyone to know. Doctors, sailors, and soldiers all traditionally learn to sew pretty quickly as vital skills in their careers; for example, a soldier can't expect his mom to sew the patches onto his uniform, repair the only clothing protecting him from the elements after months or years on the battlefield, or sew a shrapnel wound closed for him.
      I'm no soldier, sailor or doctor, but once I had the seat of my trousers rip open at work - I keep a spare sewing kit in my desk, and just backed out of sight for a few minutes, repaired my pants myself, and was back to work in a few minutes before anyone realized I was gone or had a chance to realize that something they'd never have let me live down had happened. I'm a single guy living alone at home on a tight budget - I don't have my mom or a wife around to sew for me, nor do I want to be dependent on someone else to do a simple chore I can and should do myself.
      My father taught me to sew and cook and do my own laundry when I was a youngster, and never seemed any less a man for it - it was important for him that he could be independent and self-sufficient enough to take care of himself, and it was important for him that his son be just as independent and self-sufficient, and I've never regretted learning those skills.
      There's a big do-it-yourself ethos in metal that way: I've never known a metal head to look down on any guy for sewing his own jacket.
      I had a buddy of mine, a youngster new to metal, ask me and another of my friends how to put patches on his jacket, because he couldn't get his to "stick". The first response, of course, is "Just sew 'em!" He looked at us like we were from Venus or something, so we gave him some light hazing: "Ah, dude - you just get yer mommy to sew 'em for you, that's totally metal! Then you can ask her for permission to go to a concert, and maybe she'll let you have a beer some time!" After we assured him we were serious the first time about sewing them on himself, we helped show him how to sew his own patches on - after a little guidance, he was sewing his own battle-vest like a pro, and it was sort of a rite of passage - now he's got a vest he made himself, and it's an extension of his own individuality and independence. As metal fans and as guys, I'm sure we both would have thought less of him if he'd had his mom or a girlfriend or something sew for him.
      At my first few jobs, working in restaurants and kitchens, I worked with plenty of girls who'd never learned to cook for themselves, and who supported useless live-in boyfriends and broods of children on fast food seven days a week, without showing the least curiosity about learning how to cook or do anything for themselves. More guys were willing to take the initiative to learn to do things for themselves than girls in my experience, and the willingness to learn and the curiosity and initiative to ask, to me, are easily much more masculine and metal than lounging around waiting for your girlfriend or mom to outsource simple and basic chores to someone else because she can't be bothered to learn, and, I'd venture to say, more masculine even than making your mom or girlfriend do the work for you because as a guy you can't be bothered to learn....
      So, yeah: sewing, cooking, etc.? Totally masculine and totally metal, in my book. (And hell, I've made my own beer, too - it requires a little cooking, and the result? BEER - and beer is masculine and metal enough in my book!)
      Kudos to Black Metal Werewolf for trying to ask for some guidance on how to do it himself, and shame on anyone who refused to teach him because it wasn't their idea of masculine, or because a DIY metal jacket is too metal for their comfort! I didn't need the tips, but I appreciate the time he's taking to share them!

      I do to. I know how to saw. Useful for socks, buttons, I even have experience with embroidering.
      In my country it is very popular to know-how those life things. However, I find that girls more and more don't know stuff (except how to suck money out). I am a university student, live in the dorm by myself, who supports himself, now my mother (who is in the different town and has financial troubles) and my GF here in my city. And I cook better then my GF. I wish she was better around the kitchen... Still, I can surprise her with my food and no expensive restaurants needed. But it is sometimes tiring that all the stuff is on me, as my job takes up most of my time. Thank god I need no lawn mowing, flower pots tilting/cleaning, hedge cutting and weeds pulling (not those weeds) while at my university city. Not unlike at my hometown...

    I'm sorry people were giving you a hard time for wanting to learn how to sew. I would've loved to teach you, but instead I can give you a tip: When starting a stitch, instead of putting the whole needle through ending up with all the thread on the underside of the vest, try only pushing a small part of the needle through, and then come back up with it where you want the end of the stitch. That way you always have eyes on what you're doing and don't have to fiddle with the needle and thread under the garment. It's also quicker :) You'll also get less chances of the thread curling up on you since you have eyes on it at all times and can unwind it every time you start seeing it curl up. Hope that helps!
    PS: Try keeping the stitch as close to the edge as possible. I noticed it got a bit far down on the top of your emperor patch there. This is also easier to do when you do the stitch as I mentioned ;)

    I'm actually really glad that I learned how to sew when I was like, 3 bc my patches are so well sewn on that they would survive a nuclear blast from between the patch and the jacket

      I feel the same way. Having been sewing for years as a child before getting into metal, it was a lot easier sewing patches on. As soon as I survived the embarresement of having my grandma point out that I was using an embroidery needle for the first 5 patches, then it all went well...

    I have a tip if you want to prevent your cool new patch from ripping of around the edges you can go from the bottom through the patch and then go around that patch back down so you just make a little circulos around the edge. That will hold the edges flat to your vest or backpack. Downside is that it takes more time and more thread.

    I'm aware this is old news. However, I think your sewing isn't bad by the standards of being self taught. And also, using a holding pin to hold your patch is a good thing.
    Also, I hate when thread tangles. I don't like when I'm stitching some cross stitch and my embroidery floss gets tangled. It's a pain in the ass.

    I always put the thread up through the bottom of the patch, then go over the edge and go back down. Then go like half a centimeter farther to the side back up and repeat.
    From my experience this way it holds a lot better in the end but also takes a bit longer than your technique.:)

    Can I use a sewing machine to sew patches? I know how to use one but I don't know if it will make a 'real' battle jacket.

      elitists will say no. But its basicly perfectly fine. I mean, i use a sewing machine sometimes when it needs to be done fast because i am at a concert the same evening. Often i cut many many patches down to change something, and sometimes then i use a sewing machine.

      sew by hand and machine is totally ok. I do both. I have always had compliments on mine. No one at metal shows. Really pay attention what method you sew. Vary rare anyone will ask. mostly they will just admire the work and time it takes to put in the effort to make it happen. :)

    Where do you get your patches

    If there isn't blood on your battlejacket then you ain't doing it right? *LOL* j/k. That and thimbles help.
    Seriously, that's how I had to learn too. Online helped. I also prefer fabric glue to place the patch.
    I tried stitching over the border but I didn't like the look, so I just stitch behind the border and it looked better. I also do over-under instead of looping.

    I wouldn't dis your sewing
    Try sewing a sports team related patch on a battle vest..not the easiest thing in the world to do !

  • @katrinareminiec6838
    @katrinareminiec6838 6 лет назад

    You could secure it by sewing the top of the patch first

    • @gothlover4u
      @gothlover4u 6 лет назад

      You can also use more than one pin. For me I use one on top, Both and both sides. this way it wont change positions at all and I can add more patches as well. Then sew from there.

      @@gothlover4u I don't use pins when I sew...I hold both the jacket & the patch in the same hand..I also pull the material down.. I have sports & other patches.

    i want to like you i really do,but every one of your videos i watch and i think what the fuck is wrong with this guy, like if someone cant tie a knot in a string and stab it through 2 pieces of cloth point and laugh don't make a video about showing them how to sew a patch on a vest it leave that for fashion designers or something. HME demonstrated perfectly how to make a battle vest with lots of sarcasm and comedy.
