Todd Knows What He Is Saying Even If I Don't

- Yesterday when I was in the kitchen TOdd got behind me and I didn't see him I stepped back and stepped on his tail. I apologized and he seemed fine so I thought no more of it. Today Todd tells me his tail is happy. Todd will say to me a body part is happy after something is wrong and feels better. I had forgotten all about it and it took a minute to figure out what he was saying.
Todd is a 7-year-old neutered male cat at the time of this video. Todd and his dad have been learning to communicate with each other since May of 2022 with the help of recordable buttons. We aim to let Todd express himself and tell me his wants and needs. Currently, Todd has 53 words on his soundboard. This channel is dedicated to Todd learning to “talk”. Todd is a rarity for not holding grudges. Lol. I was just seeing a patient yesterday who told me her cat had held a grudge for a year after her family cared for her while she was gone for 2 weeks. Lol. All I could say was ‘wow’.
One of our cats held a grudge (against her brother) her entire life. Lol. She never let him forget he was too rough as kittens. She became the king cats enforcer, lol. Luckily for him and everyone else those were 3 of the most patient cats I've ever met. But once in a while she would bite his ears or his neck just to let him know she could kill him, if she didn't love him lol. He wisely held very very still. (Took after the sister that brought them home, she can certainly hold a grudge too! They didn't even know each other that long, she moved out weeks after getting them and left them.)
I fully stepped on my cat's tail one time and I crouched to apologize and he showered me with love 😂 Cats are fully aware that we don't mean to hurt them and having a strong bond means they forgive you 🥹❤
Todd never ceases to amaze me! His recall of previous events and giving an update on how he's feeling now vs yesterday? Wow. And I'm so glad to hear his tail is feeling happy again. 😸

It is. He knows I am concerned with how he feels. He has a medical issue that I monitor, and he is used to me asking him if he feels happy or ouch.

Oh, and he said “Meow!” , “tail happy!”. 😊. I like the “Meow!” before saying something else! I’ve heard Meow, Todd, etc….This time he didn’t add Todd after Meow…he probably knows you would figure out the ‘ who’ part !..Todd certainly enjoys using his words! I do too!

I often use the buttons with Todd, I just don't incorporate it into the videos for brevity. People want to see Todd use the buttons and expect Dad to know how to use them.
Todd's announcement that his tail was happy certainly sent a wavelength of smiles around the world! - I had my mouth full of food right when his happy-tail news came out of left field... and had to put extra effort into keeping everything behind my teeth😁
😄 He cracks me up too when he gets sassy and talks back telling me no or to do something right now when I tell him later. Lol.
Todd remembers events that are important to him, like his tail being stepped on. He also knows Dad loves him and wants him to feel better. So todd tells Dad tail happy the next day to clear this mishap off the table and to know things are back on track. Wonderful that Dad gets to know what concerns Todd and if tail were still ouch, Dad would take Todd to the vet. These buttons are really paying off for interspecies understanding!

That would. I was actually going to email Kendra to see if she would like to try a kitty Zoom call to see if Billi and Todd would talk to each other but Billi's health start to decline so I never did. I wondered if they would argue whether the toy was called a Whirly or Zoom-Zoom.

Poor little guy. I hate it when I accidentally step on my cat's feet, so I try to be very careful to know where he is. He's a sneaky little guy so I've had some near-misses. It's neat how Todd can tell you that he's hurt or better. Glad his tail isn't still hurting!
Agreed, they can be sneaky. Todd is always walking around me and rubbing on my legs and sitting behind me. IT's a rare thing but he will get his tail stepped on once in a while. He still keeps coming back and doing it again. lol

I was so glad to see video of you modeling the use of the buttons. That is always something I enjoy seeing. Something I miss seeing Billi & Kendra do.
I loved seeing that look of intense interest, maybe longing, Todd gave Glamour when she got up and walked away.

Being little small pets like cats can be hard to notice some times, even if pet parents try to be aware. Todd has a very good memory, and flies his flag (tail) high.
I've mobility issues so my kitties have learned (sometimes by not very nice lessons sadly) to keep tails and toes tucked away on my bad days. They love snuggle time and must be in the same room with me no matter where I go in my house otherwise.
Todd is usually pretty good about staying clear, but when I'm in the kitchen, he's always hoping for little treats.

I was wondering if he was talking about it feeling better (with zero context of his tail having been hurt) and was surprised I was right.
Todd will often tell me when he is feeling better by saying the body part and happy. This amazes me
I love that he told you that! I wish our cats could tell us how they feel. Can you imagine 7 cats “talking” all at once?
This is the main reason I started the buttons with Todd. Also, as a side note, I find that most multi cat households only one cat will talk and be the spokes cat for all.

She did hiss at him but I don't think he tried to sniff her. He knows you don't get too close to Glamour. She growl stretched and hissed at him most likely because he was looking at her. She is Spicy.

IT certainly can be. Often Todd is one request after another. I try to give him and the other kitties as much as I can.
