What is Junk Silver?

  • What is junk silver? Some call it constitutional silver, other call it junk silver. But what is the difference between junk and silver, and how can we find a definition of junk silver?
For me (and probably other stackers out there), we define silver in how it feels and sounds. .900 silver still feels like silver, but how about .640 or even 0.500?
I will test different coins, all European junk silver and foreign junk silver coins, all the way from 0.9999 silver down to 0.400 silver. At what silver purity does a silver coin stop to feel like a silver coin?
On the video you will see some Swedish Kronor, Austrian Schilling, Swiss Franc, American Silver Quarters, Greek Drachma, Russian Koopek & German Mark coin.

Hello my friend. I'm so glad someone made this video. I was going to make it on my channel which is about all kinds of metals but lately silver coins. I hope you make more videos and I'll certainly be on the look out for more from you. I always subscribe to fellow coins stackers/collectors.
Where I would disagree is that I don't believe ANY metal is junk. I make my living from metals but of course I recognise that there is PRECIOUS metal and that includes silver. Well done on this video pal. Liked, subbed & 🔔
    Looking forward to more.
Edit: i will check out Austrian Stacker.

Thanks a lot for your message. It means a lot to me. I will try to post some new videos soon.
In the meanwhile, i agree no metals are junk. Its more of a wordplay. But i can def say anything below 50% silver does not feel like silver, which i find interesting. Have a lovely day and hope to speak soon!

@@europeanstacker8781 Same experience : on the Dutch online private mark I could find Dutch Silver under / at / close above spot, while the prices of silver bullion was rising. Didn't see the point of buying bullion coins anymore, only bought some bullion coins that I'd like as a collector, and not stacking based. You can buy more silver for the money you would pay for bullion coins. I mostly bought Juliana Rijksdaalders, Juliana Guldens, Juliana Ten Gulden + the Beatrix 10 Guldens. The most common and liquid "Junk Silver", from the 20th century. However, we do have silver proofed 2 pound coins and 50 pence which look extremely nice. I think you would like them 🙂

European Stacker I’m glad to have found your one post on Instagram, & it led me to the channel. I personally don’t like modern silver mint products, & bullion because I feel that dealers charge a big premium on it. I prefer the “junk” that is out there, it can be had for less of a premium usually. But I definitely agree with you, 50% or better I consider good silver to have. Less than that is kind of junky, but I’ll collect anything with silver in it. I know that there is also Mexican silver with 72% silver. I also picked up some very old Swedish Krona, I believe theyre all 90% silver.

@John Yonker Thats great to hear. I totally agree with you. Two weeks ago i bought old Italian silver for 30% under spot 😳 in the same time, premiums for common bullions were 15-20% above spot! Its 50% difference for the same thing, silver. Assuming the silver price stays the same it will take you 25 years if inflation to even get back that investment and break even. Crazy right?
For the silver coins, mexican silver sounds amazing, very happy for you. Regarding the Swedish Krona, you can send me the photo on instagram and i will let you know the silver content. Take care my friend and thanks for being part in my little community here on youtube! 😊

Sadly the premiums being charged for junk silver have put it at the same level of normal bullion. Checking some popular sites that sell bullion junk silver Is being sold with $6-8 premium over spot price for low quantities. Silver rounds, bought in low quantities, have lower premiums than junk.

@@europeanstacker8781 hi, yes I'm in the US (sort of, one of their territories). Due to popularity maybe that's the reason it's so high and even now that silver is at lower prices still it has maintained their premiums. I would love to get some world coins, not just because of the silver value but also for collecting purposes and as a hobby. Sadly there are scammers out there that make it difficult to get real stuff and if something is sold below the spot price of silver it looks suspicious.

I suppose it’s all relative, if you don’t have much silver like me there’s no such thing as junk silver lol, maybe junk is just silver you don’t like and are willing to sell or flip. That 2 kronor with the coat of arms and crown is definitely my favourite, sweet coin.

Hey Vanessa, so nice to see your comment, thanks for checking in! 😊 I agree silver is always silver. What i tried to prove on this video is that silver coins feels different depending on the purity. Silver has a very specific sound to it, in my opinion silver that is less than 0.400 purity makes the coin sounds slightly different, comparing to a higher purity coin. Some lower purity coins are still awesome and i love them, even if they are 1% or less silver. What coins do you collect my friend? 😊

Pre1920 UK silver coins are .925 or 'Sterling Silver' ; you might like the 'feel' of the crown coins. After that date they moved to 0.5 sliver until zero silver after 1947. However many of the coins have an intrinsic value well above the bullion worth... But if you like the feel of the coins that's fine.
