I’m a huge Maserati fan - a lot of people misunderstand or only watch reviews of ones completely “run” into the ground. If you can find a well maintained one, one with the proper modifications to the exhaust and the Formula Dynamics drive by wire….the image of this car would be completely changed. I’d say the majority of haters for both brands have never owned…or for that matter driven one. I think both cars are sexy. I still own my GranSport…and love it and I also wouldn’t shy away from the Aston either. The Maserati is a pure Italian classic. You buy a Maserati for the passion and the engine….the history….it’s a great Gran Tourer. If you can master the F1 Transmission…it’s awesome. Yes…all the components are super expensive…but I guarantee…for the price of the Maserati - no other car will put a smile on your face….especially for the price….have I spent 50% of the value of the car on repairs…yes, is that a smart move, not really….but…so worth it. Find a good one, see it in person…and you will get what I am saying.
Aston Martin all day long, see one coming towards you and your heart just flutters . Would get one but my head says no it’ll need a gearbox rebuild 1 month after I buy one.
@@morgman43 The Gransport is MUCH prettier in person. It's not a shape that translates that well to photos and video. In person, it becomes evident how aggressive, low and small the car is compared to trucks like the Granturismo or DB9. It becomes very evident that it is a special car, and people do notice that and comment everywhere you go. The Aston is beautiful, don't get me wrong, but it's not as cut and dry as you might think. Both do stand out in different colours however - the Aston does NOT look good with bold colours and suits flat and simple colours well (like this video). The Maserati does not do simple and especially flat colours well (red just looks off on it), it stands out in metallic, interesting colours with shimmer to the paint, with blue with a tinge of green probably the best (the blue in this video is also pretty good). It's horses for courses when it comes to these cars and colours. If you want a bright red sports car, you need a ferrari, metallic blue, gransport for you. Overcast and grey, the Aston is the one to stay :)
I love the side by side comparison, you should do more of these. Just like this, it was perfect, when we are lookin for our next ride, and have it narrowed down to 2 or 3 choices. This will help a lot of people.
Is the Gran Turismo in a different class? I've always thought that GranSport design just looked started looking 'old' as soon as I saw the Gran Turismo. Whereas the DB9 design is just timeless, and I'm not sure if I really even think the DB 10/11 actually look any better than the 9!
And that sums up the markeplace for old performance cars, balding 40-something men get a few hundred miles of thrashing and then 'hot potato' away the car after electing to not go for that £12K engine and suspension refresh ...
@@ThreeFiddy1701 Well there's that too. My comment was more a way of saying their both old money pits that will never stop breaking bits. Which I guess in turn leads to what you just said.
2 years ago we bought an XKR x150 convertible, after considering Maseratis and Astons in the same price bracket here in Spain… Just because “wifey” loves Jags. She was really in love with the X150. For sure I liked the car as well, but faaaar away from what I do love it now (we already had at that point an M3 convertible and an S8). The XKR is beautiful, it’s fast, it’s comfy, and if you look for action, it’s quite rewarding as well for being such a big GT convertible. The best part is that, until now, after 40.000km of leisure trips (including 2 Nürburgrings), the maintenance has been quite reasonable (around 1200€/year in the Jaguar dealer). It’s an OUTSTANDING machine, such that I don’t have even a clue what the h… we’re going to do at some point to find a replacement. For sure I miss it in this video as well.
Those are nice but it’s not a better Callum shaped car, the front looks too much like a catfish I prefer the looks of the older Pollock designed X100 over the X150.
I prefer the looks of Aston but i would do the same.. Altho about 10 years ago my father was buying a car and it was between 911 997 cabrio and Jaguar XK cabrio… by now Jaguar would loose about 15-20k in value and Porsche gained atleast 10k (he got a great deal too i guess, but still..). He still owns it, and honestly he is a terrible owner😀, but nothing major broke for now.. I would also look at early FX 4.2, even cheaper and probably a better car in every regard... and still very beautiful imo🥰 not as beautiful as mentioned GT cars ofc👍
The Aston Martin is predictably very good looking. More classically "beautiful". However, the Maserati is more interesting looking- in the best way possible. I think it balances elegance with sportiness, old-school and modern, to make a unique and exotic, yet understated design. Giugiaro never really styled the prettiest or most classically beautiful cars, but he did design some of the best-looking, most unique, and appealing ones. And I think the GranSport deserves the prize here. It's more of an acquired taste which I think makes it cooool. Plus it's relatively rare and obscure which makes it even coooler. 😉
That intro is very TopGear-esque. Reminds me of the GBP113,500 convertible supercar dilemma from series 15 episode 4. 11/10 intro should do it again in the future. Boy do I miss them old episodes.
Don’t ever change that intro music James, I love it and it’s becoming iconic. It perfectly sets the tone and pace for the films, in the same way as “Jessica” did for the original Top Gear. Great review as always.
1. Maserati: potential and actual concerns over the reliability of Maserati. 2. Aston Martin: concerns over the ownership and running costs of Aston Martin. One thinks that buying e.g. a Mercedes AMG would more more reliable and with lower / more sensible running costs. If you want a "dream car" maybe just have to throw caution to the wind and jump in with both feet? A DB9 seems like it will cost a lot over X years of ownership.

I think the Aston is the better looking car. They are both beautiful. The Aston seems more heritage and classic. It is predictable, but as you said : does that make them all beautiful cars. The Maserati has an odd shape combination between the front and the rear windscreen….almost a design interrupted type of feel. The Maserati name carries the design/power factor with it. The Aston brings the quiet understated sophistication. My thoughts only….and both cars are stunning.
Aston for me every time. It could drive like a million mile Austin Allegro, but itd be worth it for those looks. For me, Astons always have been the most beautiful cars ever built.
The Aston is just beautiful. Not any Italian car from that Era comes close. Ferrari.. Lamborghini. And I have an Alfa Romeo Milano! Great review as always!
Have to agree with the comments on cabin noise. It is a bit higher than expected especially with Pilot 4S’s. Have to disagree with the ride and steering feel. Driving a very low mileage sub 5000 miles 2010 with sports suspension the damping and steering response is superb and the car shrinks around you. Mid corner bumps and a change of steering angle mid corner do not upset the car and the grip is surprisingly good.
The Aston has to be the more beautiful by far…. It is the car that you would always turn back and take another look at when parking 🤩 …. The Maserati is the beautiful young Italian that turns your head but turns a bit broad around the hips as the years pass 😆
Forgot to answer your looks question. I give the DB9 the nod on looks, but to your point many Astons look so similar it is hard to tell them apart, which is handy when you buy an old less expensive model, but look the 007 end of things for the uninformed which is 98% of the populace :-) The Maserati looks exotic and great, but the roof line does it in if slightly to make room for adults in back as you mentioned. Cheers!
Honestly I've always loved the way both of these cars look, however, my preference is the DB9. I think the proportions are better and I love it for many of the same reasons I love the Vanquish, which I consider to be one of the most beautiful cars of the 21st century, possibly of all time. I also just love the heritage of Aston Martin. To me, Maserati has always felt like the less successful younger brother that has been riding on the coat-tails of Ferrari for some time.
@@BRAINFxck10 absolutely. Some truly gorgeous cars from that era. I don't know the in depth history of the company but it is a shame how they've just continued to go down hill over the decades. I can't help but think of how much of a disappointment the Ghibli seemed to be. Lol
Thanks James for a well thought out and interesting video. I'd love to see a GranSport and Maserati 4200 GT Spyder Manual comparison, should you find that needle in a hay stack. So nice to see you and Ben helping out with one another's content. I wish you both the very best from California!
A lot of car for you money with both of these beauties. I'm tempted to go for the Maserati as slightly more sporting but I don't know if could tolerate that gearbox.
Great video as always James though the shirt wasn’t as good as usual I’ve got a ratty 2010 Clio with a wheel trim missing. Let me know if you want to do a video with it 👍
Yes you can, there plenty of older models of 911s around that price from 1999 to 2005 and the 997 models from 06 to 08 depends on the millage you buy find 911 for around 27k to 40k here in the U.S.
James Reece, and older colleague of mine from our Business School, with whom I did several projects, one with Harley Davidson, is probably a Masochist. In the 1990s, he got himself a Jaguar XJ and his wife a Lexus LS400, both leased. At the end of the lease, he dumped the Jag, but the wife Bought the Lexus, which she drove 120 miles a day just to go to her Univ. So did James learn his lesson? Nooooo! He then bought a new Quattroporte, and after the junkmobile spending more time in the shop than on the road, he invoked the Michigan LEMON LAWS and forced the dealer to take the lemon and give him another one (LOL)
It'd still be the 911 for me if the price was similar and the reason is that it's probably more reliable than the other two and likely also cheaper to run. 6.0 L V12 - yeah, no thank you.
If I take away national bias then Maserati is the stronger badge with perhaps more sporting pedigree, as Enzo Ferrari said, a sports car MUST evoke emotions and Maser does that more than the Aston. I like the AM due to its more timeless design but prefer the Maserati’s rough sporting edge. Thanks JayEmm for sharing.
Maserati is not the stronger badge, you can buy a new Grecale for $65k and the Ghibli loses 60-70% of it’s value in 4 years, in general Maserati’s do not hold their value well.
I looked at a Vantage and a DB9. The Ford/Volvo parts bin Vantage of the early 2000's is to be avoided in my opinion. Strangely the dealer told me that the DB9 drives worse than the Vantage!
James , I didn't think you were old enough for Mrs Trellis 😂. Porsche design department , the laziest bunch on the planet. My partner would love the Maserati, after her brief experience of a Ghibli, but I'm an Aston fan. We just need the ever never present lottery win!😂 Not a bad garage either way.
Both great cars. The Maserati sounds like a lot of fun and would probably be my choice. It's a shame that both cars cost £700 in road tax and do 16MPG, otherwise I would be looking to test drive both!
I'm sorry, a Maserati equal to an Aston Martin in desirability? On what planet? The DB9 is one of the most beautiful cars of all time and has an Aston Martin badge on it. The other one one looks good from some angles and pig ugly from others. It always looks a little fussy. Plus it is only a Maserati. Nobody dreams about owning a Maserati, at least nobody outside of Italy, and there they probably prefer Ferrari or Lamborghini. The trident badge looks cool though.
Aston Martin DB9 is the answer. Especially if you can manual conversion. Elegant answer. Looks, performance, and albeit prestige, which who cares, your answer is clear. DB9. But who am I? 😅😎
Design = DB9!, way way more stylish than the outdated Maserati. Guess no marked and demand for such Maserati cars in the near future. Of course the DB9 is also outdated with an unreasonable and expensive V12 but all within an unmatched design. A British icon and legend.
Except for GT3s, 911s are just not special enough. Love DB9s but would stretch the budget to either a much rarer Rapide S with the 8-speed or a much more modern Granturismo. Leased a 2018 Granturismo MC and loved it.
DB9 is clearly the way to go. The interior of the Maserati looks like a Fiat Panda covered in leather, the way the headliner is made it looks like its 25-30 years behind the Aston, the A and B pillars could be a little thicker to give a feeling of safety and beeing cocooned. The Maserati implies a feeling of a kit car for me while the Aston is a proper car made using mass-production modern day technologies. Got more of an engine and the way better gearbox. For the suspension I assume you can find an adaptive one even in the aftermarket. Maserati only the Gran Coupe for me and even that looks dated. Answering the question from the beginning DBS>DB11>DB11>992>991>Vantage (any of them)>DB9>997.2>Vanquish 2>Anything Ferrari>Gran Coupe >a lot of sports cars, even a Z4 2.0 E86> Maserati Gran Sport
Advise to the lady that wants brochures but has no time: Make a colour laser print if the websites of Aston Martin and Maserati. Let this float around in the house
Both are very nice... but I can't look past the back of the Maserati looking a bit like a rover with its back lights, just my opinion. Aston wins on looks. Maserati on sound. But still, rather the Aston. 👍
For me, it's Maserati all the way. I've owned a few - Ghibli, Quattroporte, and others. They're fun, exciting and easy to master, being generally light and agile. The Aston Martin; right from DB2/4 days have always been fine cars of course, but for me, fine they may be, but finesse they have not. I find them heavy, a little unimaginative and not a car I could really settle to. The only exception was the DB4; still a heavy car, but it could really surprise you with its performance and comfort. You have a tough choice James. Cachet, or staid luxury?
From the looks point of view, the Aston is definitely a much more cohesive design, where every element every angle supports the rest of it. The Aston also sounds that much better than the V8 in the Mazzer.
Buy A Corvette C6 and you have the best bang for your Buck! I own a C6 Z06 with the 512 HP Seven liter Engine on 1350 kg car weight, which beats the hell out of almost anything on the road today!
The Maserati is more exotic looking because you never see them on the road. The Aston is a bit more common (at least where I live) but the Aston is objectively more attractive

Cheers!
Aesthetics is a clear win for the Aston. The Maserati looks a bit like a salon from the back. The Aston melds elegance with sporty looks.
Yeah Maserati’s best years are long gone, mid 50’s to mid 70’s were their golden era.
@@BRAINFxck10 absolutely. Some truly gorgeous cars from that era. I don't know the in depth history of the company but it is a shame how they've just continued to go down hill over the decades. I can't help but think of how much of a disappointment the Ghibli seemed to be. Lol
Glad to see you're an ISIHAC aficionado.
Porsche reliability is a myth, so I'd take the Aston anyday.
The DB9 for the car……… the Maserati for the engine…………. still keeping my 911 though 🥳
Porsche is reliable ! And thats why wouldnt buy another and dont care of the neighbours 😂
Summary: Jay misses the Maserati. Ben misses the Aston. 🤣
Thanks James for a well thought out and interesting video. I'd love to see a GranSport and Maserati 4200 GT Spyder Manual comparison, should you find that needle in a hay stack.
So nice to see you and Ben helping out with one another's content. I wish you both the very best from California!
They did a handful of Gransport Spyders too. They’re very rare!
Mrs Trellis of North Wales.
The Maserati Gransport VS Aston Martin DB9
Adjudication, Humph 😉
A lot of car for you money with both of these beauties. I'm tempted to go for the Maserati as slightly more sporting but I don't know if could tolerate that gearbox.
Don’t give up the 911 for any of these cars would be the advice
That Aston V12 exhaust is just dirty… even when fitted to a V8 Vantage. 😉
Great video as always James though the shirt wasn’t as good as usual
I’ve got a ratty 2010 Clio with a wheel trim missing. Let me know if you want to do a video with it 👍
On this side of the channel, you can't buy any 911 for that price anyway...
Yes you can, there plenty of older models of 911s around that price from 1999 to 2005 and the 997 models from 06 to 08 depends on the millage you buy find 911 for around 27k to 40k here in the U.S.
@@mareo187this side of the channel is continental Europe

@@p_mishev he was referring to the Atlantic Channel maybe, they've got another whole sense of distance in the US
or aston...
Maserati looks better to me, but I am biased as I had a Gransport MC Victory
Plus,it looks more chohesive, andlooks better overall, even considering perf
After all I will say “Yes” to 911’s 😅
It'd still be the 911 for me if the price was similar and the reason is that it's probably more reliable than the other two and likely also cheaper to run. 6.0 L V12 - yeah, no thank you.
I would love any Aston Martin including the V8 vantage 1970s or 80s
For under 25k its a Panamera and the change for me.
No competition when it comes to looks. The Aston wins hands down. One of the most beautiful cars ever produced.
You've trapped a mouse in your shirt Jay when you buttoned it up.
DB9 is the more elegant car. The Maser is gorgeous though!
I wish prices were this low in the states!
She sounds like a nutcase😂
One of those is very pretty, the other one is one of the best-looking cars of all time.
Sorry James but the Massa's rear lights look like they come from an old Rover 600. Aston wins on looks alone.
Both great cars. The Maserati sounds like a lot of fun and would probably be my choice. It's a shame that both cars cost £700 in road tax and do 16MPG, otherwise I would be looking to test drive both!
The earlier Gransport falls into the lower car tax band.
Yep the GranSport is half the price of tax as the DB9
There's also the Jaguar F-Type, though it doesn't have the pretend back seats of the other two.
Design = DB9!, way way more stylish than the outdated Maserati. Guess no marked and demand for such Maserati cars in the near future.
Of course the DB9 is also outdated with an unreasonable and expensive V12 but all within an unmatched design. A British icon and legend.
Manual DBS Volante is the realistic dream
I would not touch that Maserati with Cambio Corsa transmission.
Except for GT3s, 911s are just not special enough. Love DB9s but would stretch the budget to either a much rarer Rapide S with the 8-speed or a much more modern Granturismo. Leased a 2018 Granturismo MC and loved it.
Any chance of testing a Merc GLC 63 AMG im seriously considering buying one, pre face lift as its cheaper and more power 😂😊😊😊

How very Clarkson/TopGear ! 😆
Whiff of blue smoke from the Maserati at the start there?
From the looks point of view, the Aston is definitely a much more cohesive design, where every element every angle supports the rest of it. The Aston also sounds that much better than the V8 in the Mazzer.
The Maserati is the better looking car. But maybe it's just the much more interesting color?! Hmm ...
Silly video mate… No alternatives.. ‘Porsche, there is no substitute’ 😂👌🏼
