Ben you capture the joy of Italian car ownership very well. The higher the highs, the lower the lows. To paraphrase one great car journalist, a Maserati, or an Italian car in general, despite often getting a rating of 3/5 stars, is rarely so mundane as other 3/5 cars. It's very likely sometimes 1/5 and other times 5/5 stars. And to quote another, "a Maserati is like owning a two year old child. It's really annoying a lot of the time, but if someone tried to take them away from you, you'd kill them." I hope the trade down series not only helps you build your channel more, but also provides car dads with great info about how to get a fun car without breaking the bank.

I try and say this on every owners video - for sticky buttons, just get some microfibre cloths and rub dry! You will eventually (lot of work) rub away only the sticky layer and leave the perfect plastic behind.
The only things it doesn't work on are seat backs (white underneath, no go unless you paint them after) and door lock tabs (the little red stripe is painted as part of the sticky coating and will be lifted off, but you can just paint a little red stripe on after or use a sticker).
Other than the above, i've found this solution works BEAUTIFULLY and transforms the whole interior without any expense.
But beware, it's hard work - plan for 15-30 minutes for EACH BUTTON! Larger surfaces can take hours. The result is perfect finish with clean plastic, button indicators and features all retained and an interior that looks new!

Back two decades ago, the Gransport was the first sports car of its kind (straight out of the dealer showroom) that would have an astounding startup exhaust bark together with an exceeding raucous exhaust note at low revs. In the years to follow other exotic sports car manufacturers would adopt the same features and would eventually become ubiquitous with all of them.

The other thing, if my memory is right, is that Maserati was a bit… lost in the early 00’s; the company didn’t have much money and didn’t really know what it’s identity was, whereas the Vanquish and DB9 were Aston’s come back album; they’d rediscovered their mojo and so could hone the model and so the quality and feel differences is understandable.

Great review generally and from the “Dadcar” perspective. I really enjoyed hearing your daughter’s views on the backseat. It reminds me of my own daughter’s views, which mean that the cars I love driving are not necessarily the ones in which she wants to be a passenger! Is the troublesome gearbox something your little ones have noticed too, or does it only impact the driving experience? For what it is worth, I would really like to see the comparison with the GranTurismo, which has always struck me as a superb “Dadcar” due to its backseat and dynamics.

Great vid. In 2006 I bought a 4200 then in 2010 changed it for a brand new GranTurismo S. The GranTurismo had the same engine increased to 4.7lt, a phenomenal noise and built like a BMW but the size of a tank. So what did I do - I got rid of it a couple of years later and re bought a 4200 but a Spyder this time. Why, because the joy of the 4200 is the engine which looks and sounds great. It’s why you buy these cars. My wife said it was/is the best car we’ve ever had because you are connected to the engine, you feel it. It’s the only car I’ve had that she loves driving. The gearbox is awful in slow moving traffic but open it up, put it into Sport and change gear over 4,000 revs and it feels fabulous. This feeling meant I had to have it again. (In 2006 we managed to get our three young children in with a complicated arrangement with the seat belts!). Otherwise you’re right on quality, fuel consumption & gearbox. I’ve just had all the sticky plastics redone and they look great and won’t get sticky again. Surprisingly reliability hasn’t really been an issue and, of course, they are rare which is part of the fun. If you want something fast, built well and economical…buy something else. But if you want to fun and emotion, have a look at one of these. Go for a post 2005 model as by then Ferrari in the new model year they had sorted out quality, panel fit, software (and stiffening on the Spyder). These upgrades & quality improvements (but not the packaging or exhaust noise) were incorporated into the normal 4200 models.

I would advise as per the owners forums, never using the box in anything other than sport (definitely not auto) as otherwise you will burn out the clutch in short order. You can clean the sticky plastics with isopropyl alcohol and lots of patience too.

I had to do a similar thing, but with more boring cars, and less money. As my 2 kids got too tall for the back of a golf r wagon, so upsized to the Arteon.

@@karacop78 same here with 10 years ownership on a 4200. Never use auto and keep in mind this is actually a manual box, with a normal clutch, only actuated differently. Use the same precautions for clutch use, e.g. don’t let it slip as if it was an automatic, you’ll kill it pretty quickly. I personally keep out of sport mode in normal driving, it feels smoother also on the skyhook suspension side. Wishing you a lot of driving pleasure

      5 year GS owner here:
      1) sticky buttons are fixed by taking a microfibre cloth and rubbing dry. Works wonders and won't wear anything away. Don't do it on seat backs or lock plastic indicators
      2) get a formula dynamics DBW to really improve that gearbox speed at low revs. If you already have one installed, it might have had too aggressive a setting used - formula dynamics can change the aggressiveness of the setting to something you like more, so don't dismiss it right away!
3)I looked at Aston's before I got mine but sorry, the interior is very very bland on the Aston. It's like saying a Toyota has high quality interiors that last - sure, but they're plastic and bland.
That Aston's interior was black, plain with design elements and curves that clashed and didn't gel nearly as well as the GS.
In fact, the interior is a big reason why I got a GS and never wanted to "upgrade" (apart from weight and not being a sports car) to a granturismo.
The same with the weight and feel of an aston. It's simply not a sports car.
The GS is a sports tourer far more than a grand tourer, close to a sports car like an f430 (mechanic gave me a ride in one and it felt very similar to the GS in character, though quicker) while retaining 4 seats and some extra usability and "low key" ability to not stand out everywhere.
Aston's don't really drive like sports cars
Now some might think that's a knock on Aston's but here's the thing - most people think they want a sports car, but actually want a luxury car or grand tourer. The GS is raw, noisy, tramlines, moves about in your hands and has a hard crash suspension at times. It's not very smooth and likes to be driven hard and makes it known how it hates going slow in traffic.
Most people are going to like a smooth fast luxury car far better, which is where an Aston shines

I had a 4200 Spyder and my advice on the gearbox is to accept that it is a manual. It might have an automatic mode, but it is a manual - it just doesn't have a clutch pedal and you change gears with the padals. This way it leaves you in control and takes the frustration away (and will make the clutch last longer - they need changing every 30,000 miles as it is!)

      The question :
“ Are they really necessary at this time of total confusion on the Economies”, The Roads ( full of holes ) speed cameras , crazy speed limits etc etc ?
Such cars will be wrecked via their delicate suspension systems (Very fragile) once they have driven along crazy unkept road systems !
My Ferrari had to have new front bushes and suspension parts at 27,000 miles, when I asked why such a prestigious car suspension lasted such a short life The answer was
“” THE ROADS SIR “”. The cars are not supposed to be hitting potholes every day sir !

Great review and insight. I see Maserati as comparable to my MV Agusta F4 motorbike and the DB9 like my Triumph Rocket 3. The MV is Italian, utterly gorgeous, has a Ferrari designed engine, handles and sounds like a racing bike. It needs a LOT of love and attention to keep it going. The Triumph has a brute of an engine, 2.5L, is reliable, high quality, and is made for touring not the track. It costs more but is cheaper to run and fuel. Both attract a huge amount of attention and positive comments.

MPG is 22 around town and 30 on a motorway run - mind you it’s the ZF auto box which is brilliant. Spares are expensive - front discs and pads £1500, but get it serviced by a good independent and it’s not expensive to run. It handles beautifully, though a tad ‘firm’ on shitty potholed urban roads. Owner of a 2006 Gran Sport here over 5 years now. I'm in the states. I wish I could have found the blue, I gave up and went with my second choice, red with full black leather interior. Couple notes about it. It's meant to be driven as a manual, because it truly is a manual. I never drive it in auto mode. The DBW module does help, in manual mode you want it anyway. I have the DBW shift module and the ECU. I'd keep the module, just avoid auto mode and you'll be happy. Those carbon fiber paddle shifts are nice, but unfortunately it's not offered in stock form. Best thing about the car is the Italian leather and the glorious v8 engine red lining at 7500. Good review, honestly, I really didn't consider gas mileage when I bought it, my goal is it would be a weekend car eventually. I had it as a daily for about 2 yrs, but the last 3 years I've only put about 3500 miles on it. Great car, love mine.

The mpg is about what you say, lucky to get 20 on motorway!
But the f1 gearbox is something you'll need to adapt to. I used it most of the time in manual mode then you can feather the gas in sync with the gear change. With a few days practice it's pretty smooth even in town.
I have a Gran Turismo now and even though it's better, miss the personality of the 4200.

I was really close to buying a Gransport last year. I'd wanted one since they were new and finally had the budget (plus a bit spare for maintenance).
The factors that resulted in me not pulling the trigger were;:
Most of my driving is on East Anglia B-roads which is not ideal for such a heavy GT.
I really wanted to go back to a manual gearbox which the Gransport didn't have (and I didn't want a non-GS 4200 manual).
Running costs (high insurance group, fuel, road tax).
    Potential maintenance costs.
Previous experience with multiple 1990s Lancias and the "specialist" garages that I'd used has made me very cautious about running an ageing Italian car as a daily driver.
I ended up going for something newer, smaller, lighter and more nimble for the kind of roads that I'd be travelling on. Watching this, especially the observations on the gearbox, I think made the right decision.

@@dadcars Most of the general black plastic trim pieces that are sticky, vents, handle backs, glovebox handle, etc, clean up ok with alcohol or even better oven cleaner or log burner cleaner! But be careful with the buttons, they are white plastic under that sticky black coating. Ideally you need them refinishing professionally, I used an company in the Czech republic. Very good but not cheap.

I think the porsche panamera could be a good car to trade down into although the rear seats may be a challenge, but a cayenne could be an alternative. Keep up the amazing content

2011 V8 Panamera owner here. It's brilliant. Solid quality, drives like a dream (except in multi storey car parks obviously), sounds great with the sports exhaust, looks like a Porsche, ugly rear end has aged well imho and is not so ugly anymore. Boot is big, has isofox. What more would you want?! Can throw up an expensive service bill occasionally but that seems to be the case for all "dad cars".

Yes but you will have to sacrifice style and good looks to drive those, especially the Cayenne. That's a bastard looking car that is essentially an overpriced VW Toureg

I had a 2007 GS between 2011 and 2015, brilliant car and I looked well after it. Beside a F1 clutch service capped at 1500 GBP and the annual services at 600GBP and every second year at 1000 GBP no faults. Sold it 38kmiles. Fuel consumption was indeed 10mpg in heavy London winter traffic but up 22-23mpg on a legal motorway drives esp.through France. Took it the track twice, the mpg went to single digits and tbh it is not really built for track usage.

Hi. Thanks for the video. I really appreciate people who can be honest and show us all the bad parts of Italian cars, things I've complaining about since the 1980s, and the fact that the beautiful style and driving emotions allowed of the Italian cars are offset by the awful quality of the interior plastics and assembly, really has always pissed me off.
A suggestion: learn how to handle the steering wheel properly. Your position is not safe, it does not allow you to really control the car

Bunch of bits and bobs in there look similiar or identical to some trim inside my Alfa 156 and 166. It was a bit of a shock getting those two after having a few E39 5 series. German and Italian cars are great, can't speak to English ones yet.

I understand what you are saying, Having owned the Maserati shamal and 3 different Ferrari cars 328/ 355/ and 575. This car is my keeper, i will never sell it. People just don't understand that its old school. You most certainly have to warm the engine before driving it at all, the car is a beautiful beast and the funny thing is that it becomes clearly more exotica as each year goes by. beautiful engineering as well.
Maserati gave clients instructions as t the factory on how to use the f1 gear box which should always be on sport and never automatic. My friend had the DB 9 , it was like a tank compared to this car.

It’s going in to sports Italia to get sorted very soon. Honestly it’s just not right how it’s set up currently. But I wanted to make the trade before it was ready… I’ve got some more cool videos planned with it 😊

I think you should look into getting an E63/E64 6-series next as those will likely fit the "under 15k sterling" budget. I think James is going to be the first one to tell you they're incredible value for money and what you showed as far as the build quality goes in this car is something you'll never find in those.
Don't know how they fare with child seats though. :D
