Can the 2023 Nissan 400Z be improved? | Chip Foose Draws A Car - Ep. 28

  • As the world anticipates the 2023 Nissan Z, we thought we’d let Chip Foose have a go at making his own version... on paper. Chip is quite fond of the design of the original first generation 240Z and looks to modify Nissan's seventh generation Z car (and yes, this one is just called the "Z" as opposed to continuing the trend from 280ZX, 300ZX, 350Z, 370Z, etc.). What do you think? Is the 2023 Nissan Z perfect as is? Or would you rather have Chip's more heritage-inspired design?

    I like Chips inputs. However, (and this is where the 'designers' will be separated from the engineers) this Z is 100% based on the structural underpinnings and chassis of the old 370Z, to keep costs down obviously. This forced NISSAN to keep the short and bulky proportions that the 370Z gained over the 350z, which was more stretched.

    • @Timmayytoo
      @Timmayytoo 2 года назад +94

      Perfectly stated! You can see the b-pillar/quarter window are identical to the 370 - that isn't by choice. I think Nissan's designer did a pretty good job given those constraints. I'm not completely satisfied with the front grille opening, but overall I think it's an improvement on the 350 & 370.

      His version looks wayyyy better, and this is coming from a z owner (350).
      The front and rear bumpers of the nissan version are a mess. Door handle still looks out of place too. Nissan obviously tried to add some nostalgic heritage, but it looks like a 10 year old made that design; it's all over the place.
      Probably doesn't help that it's still based off a 20 year old platform. When they open the car door, I still see plastic components from my 16 year old version. Made as cheaply as possible by the lowest bidder. Can be yours starting at $40,000. If you can afford that, just get a used C7 vette.

    • @houseofno
      @houseofno 2 года назад +4

      We got six years of the Z32. Car was near the end of its production run anyway. Nissan didn't anticipate US OBD-II and it happened in the middle of the specialty coupe sales slump. It wasn't just the Z32. The Toyota Supra, Ford Thunderbird, 240SX, 200SX (Sentra coupe), and lots of others bit the dust. The Z32 was too special and an already expensive car kept getting more out of reach of its buyers.

      @@EM-km8em It didn’t inspire Lamborghini. Marcello Gandini was the original designer of the Diablo. He also designed the Countach. Chrysler owned Lamborghini at the time, and had their designers do a slight redesign of Gandini’s design. He didn’t like that. The rear end on this looks great, but the front end looks like a generic "Japanese Import Car" from a video game. @@papayaman123 Nah I dont think he was. It was a Japanse 'Honor and Pride' thing. Very toxic habit of Japanese people in the higher ranks of society.
      In Japanese international business culture, there should always be a Japanse Manager on the highest rank of every department. Even if this limits the internal communications (i.e. Language barriers). Whenever mistakes are made; the one non-Japanese sub-manager below will get sacked. Thats how they work.
      Ghosn was a good example of this: He was responsible for the merger between Renault & Nissan, but always had a full board of Japanese execs to deal with from Nissan side.
      Then the Share split between Renault & Nissan went sour, after the French Government changed one of their laws, resulting in Renault having a higher share in Nissan than vice versa. The japanese execs in the board held Ghosn responsible but obviously could not pin him for anything since it was initiated by the French Government. So (i believe) they went on a dark paper trail and frame him for the stuff he is now being accused of. Maybe he did not do enough to stop the French government, and thats why they went ham.
      But trust me; that man did not need to have those extra couple of millions in declarations. He already swam in money. If you dig deep enough you will always find something. And thats what they did.

    I’m just grateful for the Nissan Z to be continued into the next generation. The 400 hp motor and a manual should provide many reliable years of driving enjoyment. I found that aftermarket wheels, tires, suspension lowering, and mild body trims can enhance the factory design.

      Proportions are everything , and those cannot be changed by adding wheels and lowering etc . But I get what your saying , they can definitely make it look better.
      I just don’t know how “reliable” it will be . The 3.7L V6 was very reliable in the 370Z . This 3.0TT engine has been only out for 4-5 years and has had mixed reviews of reliability. Definitely not as reliable as the 3.5 and 3.7L engines

    Foose is right on. The new 400 is more of an odd caricature of the 370 and not a proper homage to the original 240. A full retro design with the elongated front end and circular headlights would have been better received than what was finalized.

The way a car feels to drive comes down to the power, sure... but importantly (among other things), the weight (and feel of movement related to that), the visceral feel of the sound and revs and most importantly by far for me, the manual transmission. Personally, automatic cars provide little to no joy for me to drive. I have yet to find a car (regardless of ICE or electric) that provides the stimulation of driving a manual performance car.
      To ask why it would matter if it were electric, just tells the story of how different we see a 'performance car'.
      The manual Toyota 86 is by no means a fast car... for example.... but it's extremely fun to drive. That feeling is the example of what is lost with 'current' day electrics.. at the moment.

    I love your designs. I think the z you made was spot on. Especially the lights and rear end. I would love to see what you could do with one of the cars I own, which is a 1993 dodge daytona es or r/t. Great stuff, nice work!

    Chip Foose always makes cars look even better than it was. For the new Z, Japan should have looked towards Chip Foose in designing the Z. Chip Foose, you're a true artist in both classic and modern auto design.

    I love what you have done to the 2022 Z. Nissan should really look at your drawings and redesigned the 2023 to look exactly like what you have done in your design

    You have to imagine a clean sheet design would have looked better than having to design around the old cars platform.

    The proportion Chip Foose drew are a lot better than the proportions Nissan actually used. Nissan was also limited on shape changes since they used the 370Z chassis. I like the longer body on Chip’s rendering better. The car would look so much better if that was what they actually did.

    I own a 1973 240Z. The raised portion in the center of the hood was added to clear the inline- 6 valve cover and it also gives the hood some rigidity. Since the new Z will be powered by a V-6 with all of the usual plastic engine covers, the raised portion of the hood needed to be wider. The headlight "buckets" on the first gen Z's look cool, however the headlight beam pattern is severely compromised because of the deep wall of the bucket facing the engine compartment! The light pattern is mostly blocked out in the center of the car! Fortunately (and mostly by accident) the problem was solved when I installed clear headlight covers on my Z.

    I like the Nissan design better than Foose’s, even though I generally love his work. A longer rear end = more material and more opportunity to drag on driveways. And the new door handles look awesome. They look aerodynamic but still easy to use (compared to say, model 3 handles).

    Hey...it's Foose! This looks awesome! Being a life-long Z guy (I currently have my 7th...), I was happy to see what they did with the drivetrain...the looks though? Yea...TBD. lol
    Anyway...havne't seen Foose in a MINUTE! I saw him draw a car for a kid that was in a mobility chair once...slapped some paper on the tray table thing attached to the chair and went to town and it came out amazing. He drew that bad boy UPSIDE DOWN!! Pretty epic artist, man. Seems like a pretty good dude, too. Good to see him still doin things!
