I do agree. What he has drawn it is the american version of a Countach. That actually happened when Ford owned Lamborghini and came out with the Diablo... The Countach is pure Eurodesign.
From an engineer's point of view, I see 2 main problems in the changes made to this car. To begin with, the front wheel arches might look cooler with the rear ones' shape, but they make the car unsteerable, so there's no point in changing that. Second, the air inlets for the engine are now useless. The one on the door is a NACA duct, and they are proven to be the most effective way to get air into a car on a flat surface (or at least they were in the 80s-90s, check the Ferrari F40). The same happens with the upper one. If it looks like a shoe box, it is to ensure that the necessary air flow gets into the engine. Any modifications made to them will result in a loose of performance or overheating. These videos are really cool and Chip's insight on the design aspects of the cars is very interesting to hear, but I believe more care should be taken when changing the functional bits of the cars, specially with high-performance ones like the Countach.
That's just it though, he's making these changes to the design of the car. It's a conceptualization. By its very nature, it pays little heed to what any practical application of his design would require. Obviously in the real world, a car looks different from its prototype due to common sense and physics playing the penultimate role. No need to bemoan what wouldn't work on a proposal for design alone.
The window and roof section are really what does that, IMHO. It needs to be less rounded and that A-pillar realls needs to meet the front fender close to it's outside edge.

Completely agree, the lp400 was the best version of the Countach, the fender flares made the car look heavy and took away it's original purity. Along with the Muira is my favourite Lamborghini model.
Very interesting experiment and study to see what can be done differently. While the original design of the Countach is stunningly simple yet bold, having been a teenager in the 1980's the newer versions were just outrageous. Like his Coutach drawing looks like a more modern version of the original, something that could have existed as a later model in a different decade. But also do this for more than just the wedge era.
The first thing that I noticed was he used an ordinary bic pen not a pencil. No second chance. No rubbing out needed. How did he draw a wheel free hand perfectly round first time on the tracing paper.. He's quite good at this drawing thing. I can see a time his drawings being worth big money.
sorry, Mr Foose, Marcello Gandini's original design of the Contach is pretty hard to improve on, even that engine scoop wasn't part of the original design of just louves, but it needed the scoops to cool the engine.
Don't mess with the 80's! Granted the late 60s and Early 70s had great designs. However, starting around 77 to 95 the 80's are my favorite. To me the boxy design is part of the 80's charm. Like for instance, the Vector W-2 and Vector W-3. I do like the Vector W8 and M12 but I will always favor the W-2/W-2 Prototype and the W-3.
I love this sketch, as i love countach a lot, but as this video shows, there were plenty of issues with it. In particular i love the fromt wheel well at 8:30 but first thought after that you know what it was. No more turning of the front wheels, The round hole has a reason for being round, sadly, as this wheel arch is so beautiful integrated
Just goes to show how difficult it is to improve on the Countach. I've seen some amazing renders of the Countach. Hats off to some of those. But this doesn't quite pop.
i'm always impressed when i see how much he's able to "americanise" the cars changing just a few lines. i remember thinking the same when i watched his bmw e30. this doesn't look italian at all to me (i'm italian)
I can't believe all the hate. He customizes cars for a living. To be able to transform a Lamborghini just shows there is no limit to his imagination and talent. Kudos to you Master Chip
The side reflectors were an afterthought for the US market cars. European cars had a tiny round turn signal there and only on the front fenders. The radiator intake, was actually like that in the original Countach concept by Bertone but then had to be changed to the boxy bulging scoop for adequate cooling. Other than those two changes I prefer the original. The cool thing about the original Countach is how it's full of complex curves in 3D while seemingly consisting of straight lines at a glance. This redesign waters down the concept and makes it more generic.
It is like wanting to improve the Mona Lisa !The early Countach is already perfect done by the best car designer of all times Marcello Gandini. Not even a designer more gifted than Gandini could better anything here. The contrast of swooping lines and boxy forms is what makes the design unique. Altering a very late Countach for a client a la Foose would still be a worthwhile experiment though. Front wheel to Fender clearance while in opposite lock?
Very cool artwork. Very interesting approach. Cool that you respected the key lines and have an interesting take on the front wheel arch. Never easy to re-design such an icon.
he respected the key lines? what? the key line is the roof line... also the bottom line that is smotth and wraps the car to make it more subtile (something that pagani destroyed with the 25th anniversary) this design is a turd. the countach is simply the greatest car design ever made and no one has the talent to try and improve a masterpiece. This interpretation needs to go straight to the trash can, it embarasses chip foose
Aldo I completely n totally n thoroughly agree with you. Very brilliantly phrased. I think one shouldn’t mess with Lamborghini designs. There is no room for improvements. Ciao Aldo
Absolutely fabulous! You are an undisputed master of design and I love your achievements. I offer you two challenges, it's up to you to choose the one you will accept to do. The first is to redesign the 747 Air Force One, to make it the Air Foose One. The second is to redesign my favorite car, the European Ford Capri 2.3 S mk3. Thank you in advance if you take up the challenge.
I love this design and I think with some aerodynamic optimization it's possible to to get enough air into the motor for cooling and performance. And a bit more space in the front wing would make the steering possible.
'70s, but yeah, this is cool. I think it is definitely better than the last of the Countach line, which covered up the elegant simplicity of the original with some coke-fueled '80s madness. Boxy, harsh, "atomic wedge" was the thing with the Euro styling houses in the late '60s and early '70s.
I sort of agree but then... No. I'm thinking in person it would hit you just as hard. Wide, low and sharp, just not boxy. I would love for someone to do this to a Countach with major body damage.
I LOVE to watch you draw! I love to draw as well but watching you makes me realize how mediocre my talent is. I love this re-design looks very smooth. I’m building a replica of a 1967 Ferrari P4 and you are inspiring me to try to class it up a bit. We’ll see how it goes. I think the original Countach looks like a stubby LEGO mobile and needs serious updating.
Google the Jaguar XJ220. His rendition of the Countach bears slight resemblance to that car, but a more beautiful version of both. Many here don't like it, but I do.
Funny how this car design and the corvette look almost the same that arched spine long look . Seems to be common on most of his designs. Need to try something without a arch in the room lines. But another than that with a few changes it can be nice BUT, you really can’t beat the design.

Don't mess with the 80's!
Granted the late 60s and Early 70s had great designs.
However, starting around 77 to 95 the 80's are my favorite.
To me the boxy design is part of the 80's charm. Like for instance,
the Vector W-2 and Vector W-3. I do like the Vector W8 and M12 but
I will always favor the W-2/W-2 Prototype and the W-3.
Where chip goes I follow. Love seeing his work. Thanks for sharing.
I love this sketch, as i love countach a lot, but as this video shows, there were plenty of issues with it.
In particular i love the fromt wheel well at 8:30 but first thought after that you know what it was. No more turning of the front wheels,
The round hole has a reason for being round, sadly, as this wheel arch is so beautiful integrated
Just goes to show how difficult it is to improve on the Countach. I've seen some amazing renders of the Countach. Hats off to some of those. But this doesn't quite pop.
I like more the original, the controversy of the lines are the touch of the Countach, bud very good design too. Mr. Foose!
His interpretation people, certain elements are great, some a little overtweaked, but still a good looking car, explained nicely Mr Foose
i'm always impressed when i see how much he's able to "americanise" the cars changing just a few lines. i remember thinking the same when i watched his bmw e30. this doesn't look italian at all to me (i'm italian)
I can't believe all the hate. He customizes cars for a living. To be able to transform a Lamborghini just shows there is no limit to his imagination and talent. Kudos to you Master Chip
It seems a new Diablo.
Do you take requests
I’ve got a 1947 dodge 2 door business coupe and I’d love to see what you would do with it.
How in the world did I miss this?!? Gotta find myself a Countach, and save to have it Fooseified 😎
are you serious? do it on a fiero replica then if you win the loterie. this drawing is an insult to the countach
ur version looks so much better to me , i like the original too but urs is way better
I can see almost a subtle transition between the countach and the diablo forming here with his rendition
The best car he has ever done is that silver impression. That car is just pure art.
I can't get under a list of five or six "really great cars".
How is going to turn with that low fender in the front🤔
Ciao Aldo
The front wheel arch is a no, that shouldn't have been done. Except that I love the design!!
Congratulations you drew a diablo 🤣🤣🤣
Nice! Looks like a Esprit.
Chip did it again, one of the best redesign ever made.
The new Lamborghini XJ220
So far, everyone who's attempted to redesign the Countach for the modern days has failed, even Lamborghini itself.
Good attempt. But I think it's lost its brutal looks. Which is what made it so appealing.
I sort of agree but then... No. I'm thinking in person it would hit you just as hard. Wide, low and sharp, just not boxy.
I would love for someone to do this to a Countach with major body damage.
Soooo Foose is doing a series on how to take classic cars and removing everything which makes them iconic 🤔 I think it's time for him to retire 🤪
This is just what the Countach needed imo. The original seems like a different person designed every part.
Looks very reminiscent of the Diablo GT. Nice work Mr Foose!
Looks kinda like a Jaguar 220. The lines and spiecially the sideview.
I like all the iterations of the Countach personally.
Funny how this car design and the corvette look almost the same that arched spine long look . Seems to be common on most of his designs. Need to try something without a arch in the room lines. But another than that with a few changes it can be nice BUT, you really can’t beat the design.
