Toyota’s reimagining, the SW20, was a lot better looking. Almost everything he said about the AW11s design was wrong. I guess no research whatsoever goes into this?
Hagerty, for the live of all that is holy, turn these into a coffee table book or a poster series. Please. And since i gave you the idea, ill take a meager 5%..... Thanks. And your welcome
Sorry, but as a MK1 MR2 owner, we like the wedge boxish look. The hard lines are beautiful. There is a ton of detail in our car already and Chip, you pretty much took away from the car. You made the car look unbalanced and heavy in the rear. Made the front look short and tiny. Much like many of the exotic cars out there of today. Even the new C8 Corvette suffers from this unbalanced appearance.
@Dixie Hooligans Nobody said anything about the Corvettes performance. I didn't even say anything negative about the car as a whole. I merely stated the car looks unbalanced from an appearance standpoint. Which Chip's video was all about the MK1's appearance. Nothing else. So, yes, the C8 Corvette looks to have a bigger rear end and a tinier front end. Might be because the car is a 40 front and 60 rear weight distribution. But I am only talking about how it looks. I've seen one in person too and can still admit that the car looks heavier in the rear. That's all.
@Dixie Hooligans If we are going to talk about the C8's performance I would have to give the car huge props. The brake by wire system seems incredible. I'm very impressed with the fact you can even change the stance of the car with the suspension. Even the rear view camera system is a huge plus to me. Sadly though, I wouldn't call the car perfect. Great yes, but far from perfect. Speaking from a mechanical view point, working on the cars engine looks to be a nightmare. But, it's not like it's an easier in most, if not all, exotics. And in all honesty, the C8 isn't exactly a do it yourself car. The main buyers will take it to Chevy to have it worked on and I know that. But even after seeing it in person, it still looks unbalanced from a visual standpoint. I like the looks, don't get me wrong, but it looks off. Almost like Chevy tried just a little too hard to make it look different enough from exotics but still make it look exotic, and somehow still make it look Corvette-ish. Just like what Chip did to the MK1 MR2 in this video. He took away from the look of the car. He didn't add to it. He made it look like other cars. He might as well have just started with a MK2 MR2.
People get swept up in contemporary styles. If this show was made in the mid 80s and he decided to modernize the fiat x1/9, he would have drawn an aw11 :)
I knew a guy who had one in white. He took a globe, cut it in half, painted the head of R2D2 on it, and used magnets to hold it on to the back behind the rear window. Very fitting.
Feiro sales A total of 370,168 units were produced over the relatively short production run of five years; by comparison, 163,000 Toyota MR2s were sold in their first five years.[1]
*_FEIRO was huge success and super popular but they were to slow to upgrade and just over all slow.. Interesting note the four cylinder had a timer gear very reliable compared to belt or chain drives of the day..._*
Thelongmanable and you had to remove the hatch from the car to get at the firewall side spark plugs, and even then many spark plug replacements went in cross threaded because there’s no view to that side of the engine. Citing production runs as a measure of car superiority is dubious. There were 2.25 million Pintos produced in its first five years.
I’m seeing Z32 300Z rear with a Pontiac Sunflower front. The thing is, Toyota already did this exercise and the 1990 MKII MR2 Turbo is a timeless design. I can’t take mine to a gas station and expect to not be talked to about it. It’s 100% stock exterior.
As an owner of a MK1 Supercharged, sure it may be a bit squared off but also as an artist I feel as if the square and sharp edges were a very proper period design que that made the car so interesting. I do love the sloped lines and curves of cars such as the gorgeous muira or the gullwing. But I do appreciate designs that are in a way "*stuck in their era" as it really does bring you back to a time before the bland designs of today when things where unique and kinda outrageous even if they weren't the most practical and or efficient.
Oh cool, he turned the one of the most iconic 80's cars into its second generation form. @chip you just drew the 2nd gen mr2. I don't like it personally. Jmo.
Impressive as always! I am a young teen who has found a love for cars and especially their design. These are amazing to watch as I hope to find a career in car design. Thanks chip for the amazing inspiration! -Miles
This looks a bit too cartoony to me, when you compare the front wheel size to the rear wheel.... it almost looks like there is a front matched to a different back? I hope I'm explaining this right, how I see it .... When the front wheel would match the back wheel in size and the "nose" just a tiny bit bigger... it would look better in my eyes.
Fun but too slow. Ditch that engine for a 3rd gen 3S-GTE and I’m with you all day. Probably no reason to raise the boost either. Basically a 2000 MR2 with a 1999 Engine.
I wanted a comfortable, quiet highway cruiser so, for a year now, I've been driving a Honda Clarity PHEV. It meets my driving needs and it's a technological marvel but, to be honest, I'm glad to be on the inside - looking out. As a design the proportions are graceless, the details awkward and the overall effect is one of assertive (if not aggressive) banality. Honda has not altered the Clarity since it was released in 2017 - I'd dearly love to see what Mr. Foose could do with it!
I had always heard that the MR2 was designed by Lotus, and when you make it a Fastback it really looks like an Esprit. Believe me, nothing about that is a bad thing. I'd take any of those cars any day.
I like the old school AD markers. I'm a fan of old school markers as well. Cool rendering. I want to call it a Suprastang with that fastback and the front end tweak. 👍
It was made in the era of Bauhaus, so that's why it looks the way it is. But also Bertone designed by Bertone as the Autobianchi A118 runabout, but saw the design and pulled out under the noses of Autobianchi. It retained Fiat's prototype number system. X0 was for engines and X1 was for passenger cars and 9 came from being the 9th vehicle designed.
The front is like that of the S13 pop-up headlights front. B-pillar aft has some Z32 with the second generation MR2. There's definitely some Lotus in the overall design. It was a fun watch.
Very nicely done as a well known car collector would say ! Joking aside Chip , for me this is one of or maybe the best drawings you created. The change's are subtle but the transformation is superb ! It's made it the car it always should have been .
I get the flying doorstop aesthetic of the original MR2 wasn't for everyone, but it was the car it was intended to be. I loved the one I had and a functional, modern update would be a great project. Just drawing the second generation model and calling it an artistic adaptation on the first is basically what Toyota did in 1991. Then Toyota actually made the car, which is what automakers do sometimes. If Chip could do that one and figure out how not to let the back end come unglued from the pavement by touching the throttle, brake, steering wheel or turn signal, then he would be on to something.
The 70/80's were all about square lines. This 1st gen MR2 is right among that. The fastback look you put in adds in muscle, but also looks heavier/bulkier... when you look at the lines of an 84 MR2 you see boxes and your right, but you also see lightness. Your design looks good (but it also looks like a cross between a Fiero or a BMW M1) and so different from the original lines that it could be a totally different car (tipicaly 90's design). Win for a good sketch, lose for the 'redesign' idea.
Lu KN I totally agree, Hotwheels fantasy castings could definitely use a touch of Chip’s mind in the design mix. Although there are plenty great castings still.
Very cool concept, but it doesn't do it for me, looks like the second generation. Personally I love the boxy look of the first gen MR2, it's a product of its time. Over-designing it goes against the car's original purpose - a fun, inexpensive sports car.
Like the e30 rendition, this missed again! Basically it feels like a parts bins special with a Saturn SL1 front end with a Ferrari 355 profile and a 300zx back.
The front overhang and hood are too short to be an S-chassis. What Chip drew is essentially a Z32. I am surprised more people dont see that. Its very apparent in the rear 1/4 window, rear quarter panel, and lower valence area. Even the hatch and spoiler yell Z32. If you want to pick a concept vehicle, he drew the NISSAN MID4.
I'm a long time mk1 owner and I would like to see a MR2 crossed with a Tyrell P34 F1 racer. There is plenty of room in the "Frunk" for the hardware, and could fix the cars tendicy to push.
I see a bit of Mercedes in the rear. Just me. I once heard the MR-2 was the poor man's Countach. Affordable to students and as you mentioned..reliable and fun. Clearly not the same grunt as a Countach. But the handling bar was quite high. With all the plastic cladding...the air intake was simply a cheaper rendition of the toaster boxes that adorned the Countach.
I've had my 87 Mr2 for over 30 years and I love the styling. Then again, I also like the Subaru XT6 from around the same time. The 80's were great times! By the way, your drawing looks like the Nissan Mid-4 prototype......
I suspect that the Toyota MR2 was designed using early CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing). Early CAD/CAM had many limitations that were addressed using simpler designs. That means fewer curves - more straight lines. In the 60’s and early 70’s - the cars had many curves. The 60’s and 70’s used paper design tools instead of CAD/CAM. As time has gone on, CAD/CAM capabilities have greatly increased. Even Home/Small Business CAD/CAM has significantly more capabilities than the early CAD/CAM. For example, look at Frank Howarth’s latest RUclips video of his coffee table that was made using Home/Small Business CAD/CAM - the design has lots of curves compared to the MR2. I am not commenting on the MR2 design or designers/engineers - just pointing out that Toyota was using the tools available at the time and that those tools had limitations compared to today’s tools.
I would love to see your version of the wide body Monza with the huge win or maybe a 2000 Mercedes c320 and you did hit a homerun on that one right there that is elegant and beautiful and Timeless and anyone would be silly to not want to have a car like that but you definitely hit the mark way above and beyond
Looks more like the 2nd gen Mr2.
I love the look of my “kitchen product” aw11 😊❤️
Agreed just lower the side intakes and remove the chrome and it's almost identical.
If you look closely, you'll see a 240sx front end, attached to a 300zx rear end, with a 2nd Gen MR2 door.
Can't unsee it.
Lol
Or the front of a Saturn SC1 and the side rear of 2 door last gen Monte Carlo. But basically he made a 2nd gen with a bigger azz.
Toyota’s reimagining, the SW20, was a lot better looking.
Almost everything he said about the AW11s design was wrong. I guess no research whatsoever goes into this?
Damn you good
Hagerty, for the live of all that is holy, turn these into a coffee table book or a poster series. Please.

The MK2 Toyota MR2 will always be the best... I've had 1 for 12 years I love it !!!
I've had my '93 for 20 years.
Same, I’ve owned a mk2 for 10years now.
Yes the 2nd gen. MR2 is a fan favorite!
Lovely car!
Mk1/3 are the best handling. The mk2 best straight away vehicle.
@@MeowMr2 the mk3 shouldn't even have the MR2 badge that was the furthest from Toyota MR2 they ever got... utter rubbish imo.
Looks like a cross between a Mk1 MR2 nose, and a Fiero GT rear. I love it!
I like this version tbh

The wheelbase looks too long to be a MR2
I knew a guy who had one in white.
He took a globe, cut it in half, painted the head of R2D2 on it, and used magnets to hold it on to the back behind the rear window. Very fitting.
I remember seeing that back in the day.
this redesign looks very heavy in the rear in my opinion
if you're looking for a curvier MR2 the version that came after the AW11 were much less boxy
The 2nd gen. MR2 is a really nice looking car!
Beautiful end design and it was a joy to see it drawn without computers. I’d buy something like that car today if it was offered.
Let's see Chip do a Nissan 300zx
He kind of just did. It looks far closer to a Z32 than it does my SW20T
I agree it reminds me of a 300zx
Look at the front end .there you go.
Totally thinking it looked like a 300zx, glad I wasn't the only one!
It looks like he's starting to draw a sw20
A bad one. My SW20 looks WAY better than that.
Yep. He drew a slightly altered poo barge.
@@negativeindustrial so does mine lol
i can't believe i just found a place where i could just watch Chip draw and sketch cars...that was always my favorite part of Overhaulin...
Please make your personal drawing RUclips channel
Congrats you’ve invented the wildly successful Fiero Aero.
No it's the hyundia coupe that they were working on but hhad rethink it due to ferrari saying one of their designs for the had been playgerised.

I love that you use a first bank pen!!! Shout out to the 303!!! I too like to use the first bank pen!!!
Yes please 🥺☺️ he is awesome as can be!!
I really liked the Fiero GT back in the day. It had those flowing, elegant lines he's talking about. A stark difference with the standard Fiero.

I can't unsee a 300zx and a Dodge Daytona. I think the MR2 is great on its own.
I have a 1986 MR2 that I use for the 24 Hours of Lemons racing series. This gives me some awesome ideas to make it look cooler!
Loved the mr2. Love it even more with this design! So current looking yet classic. We'll done sir!

Best kitchen product ever!
The mk1 was fricking beautiful.
Chip is the man, but I love the aw11 the way it is.
He put a 300zx back end on an MR2. Looks good.
Chip is definitely an artist!
This is a great series. Keep them coming. The redesign of the MR2 now looks a lot like the Lotus of the same time period.
Toyota mr2 spyder MR-S has smooth curvy lines and personally my favorite 🥰

The last model of the MR2 is a great looking car. They did it right that go around
Most people agree that the last model is the worst looking one. You cant have an MR2 without popup headlights and a notchback
I apologize, I meant the second gen. I really didn't even consider that little thing. I actually appreciate it
Oh, look! A Lotus Esprit made a baby with a z32!!!
You've inadvertently drawn a MkII MR2. I love it.

Chip Foose Draws a Mid-Engine 180sx

Its very apparent in the rear 1/4 window, rear quarter panel, and lower valence area. Even the hatch and spoiler yell Z32. If you want to pick a concept vehicle, he drew the NISSAN MID4.
Ixfxi you are absolutely right.

Chip Foose and the Loose Bunch !
Chips cars are starting to convert into American muscle cars. He did this with the Countach as well

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I would love to see his take on the Lexus LS 400. A long wheel base Japanese sedan re-imagined would be awesome.
I loved my 1st gen MR2. The way it looked, the way it drove. What Chip drew here was a fkn Lotus Esprit. Not a Mister 2.
