I saw a Mangusta at Seabrook Beach, NH three years ago. It was out for a morning drive. Blue and with that rumbling V8. I knew it is extremely rare. And a delight to see it. Once in a lifetime not ever to be seen again. Stunning! Also those French curves Mr. Foose employs are just as sleek. Just as old school. PS I am very old. And since a kid I too prefer the sleek Mangusta over the more baroque and busy Pantera.
That is Italian car designs from the Fifties and Sixties, they are all perfect and they aren't only cars, but they are in a group where don't need to change them because they are that good. Like a 1957 Ferrari GTO, you don't need to change it because you can't improve it.
The Mangusta is one of those cars that I have a love / hate feelings. Just like Foose my father bought me a model of that car. I always loved the design since I was 9 years old. One of my elementary school childhood friend Franco's father had 2 Italian sport cars. He owned a 1969 Maserati Ghibli and 1969 De Tomaso Mangusta. Franco's dad had his own construction company (typical Italian lol) and owned few apartment buildings. I recall his dad driving him to school in his red Ghibli and naturally all the boys drooled over that car. Lucky for me that Franco and I were close friends (am also Italian) so we got along much better. One time after school we went to his home and that when I saw his dad also had a Mangusta. LOVE at first sight lol. Ok ok I drooled. As much as I loved and rode in the Ghibli I had a weakness for the Mangusta (I now realized I never rode in that one) lol His father told me work smart and hard and you also can achieve your dreams. Franco and I would work for his dad during summer vacation cutting the lawns to his properties. $10 Dollars was alot for us 9 year olds a May West was a dime then lol. Fast forward 23 years later 1992 at age 32 I bought my Condo close to my childhood neighborhood for 130K. Few months later down the Boulevard less then 2 miles away, there was an independent gas station with a white Mangusta half covered for sale. One day after work I decided to go check it out, and asked the garage owner how much was he selling it for? He replied the car wasn't his and that it belongs to a widow who's selling it because of her husbands death. He gives me her number. Two days later I called and asked her how much was she selling it for? She replied $5000, like an idiot I ask her are you sure? She replies yes and asks me if I think shes asking too much for it? (Part of me wanted to say yes damn too much) lol She asks if I was interested I replied yes that i would need to go take a look at it again. So I go back to the gas station and ask the owner if I can remove the car cover completely in order to see the whole car. From the rear louvers to the back end the car was burned (engine fire I suppose) I hesitated. I talked to my older brother to get his opinion he came with me and looked at it (Big Mistake, my brother always has a negative mindset) He says why you want to spend $5000 on a car that burned it will cost you much more to fix. Now I have more doubts about buying it. That car was at the gas station lot for 5 freaking months. On that 5th month I had a High School reunion, and a childhood friend of mine, Mark, had his own mechanic/bodyshop business. I told mark I needed his professional advice and we went to see the car together. He looked at it over carefully we even asked the station owner if we can lift the car, to inspect under the car. Mark looked at it, said the body is no big deal can easily repair that, that the main frame is also in good condition. Said the engine you can either fix/rebuild or swap it. Mark told me just buy it and we will work out a budget and fix it in steps. I was super happy. The next day I go to the bank and make a certified cheque, I head to the gas station and I see this lady and some older guy looking over the car with the gas station owner. I had no idea she was the widow (thought it was the guys wife.) Finally The a-hole leaves (the beginning of my hate) lol I see the gas station owner and he introduces me to the widow. I was like Oh thought you were the gentleman's wife. I tell her glad to meet you I've decided to buy the car, here is a certified cheque for $5000. She replies I am so sorry that gentleman just bought the car. I just went numb, even thought of jumping in front of a city bus hahaha. You would think I learned my lesson, fast forward 13 yrs 2005, there was a used NSX great condition for 25K I hesitated again. 3rd time is a charm 1994 SL500 for 8K I saw I get it inspected I bought it all within 2 hours, and still have it to this day. Now I'm 61 yrs old, my 130K condo is worth $500k and that $5000 Mangusta (Could have been my Retirement Fund) is now worth between 185K to 320K (someone please shoot me.) Also another moral, never ask your pessimist big brother for any advice. I lost out on the Mangusta, and Cell Phones in its infancy. I asked him hey Raymond what do you think if I open a cell phone business? He replied are you crazy who going to spend $3000 (brick cell phones) only the rich people can afford, fast forward the whole world have them. His birthday is on April 2 he'll be 66, I'll punch him 2 times. 1 for making me hesitate on the mangusta and other for cell phone industry. lol.
OMG... Mangusta is one of my favs, along w Pantera. I grew up in L.A. there was one residing in Playa Del Rey. I've owned a Citroen SM - so that makes me a fan of the Maserati Merak & Bora, as well. that said, The DeTomaso's look far better, to me. Still looking for that 'affordable' Pantera project car LOL
As a longtime Pantera owner, I think the Mangusta is one of the most beautiful auto designs of all time even if its driving characteristics were not as stellar. I was down at Pantera International Motorsports about a week ago, and they've got a couple of them down there that they're working on. Just as striking in person as in a drawing. Foose's "less is more" approach to this car earns him a lot of respect from me. Love the color!
On 6:36 min you can clearly see side by side, that the Original has a shorter Roof Section (between A-Pillar and B-Pillar on the Top) and a slimmer Frontend. Personally I would prefer the original One. It's the better Design. I'm also a big Fan of the Mangusta, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro at Ghia, and see it clearly ahead of the later Pantera, designed by Tom Tjaarda. Because I can not afford a Mangusta these Days, I'm owning a Maserati GranTurismo (MY 2018), also a big Hit from Italy and a great Design by Jason Castriota under the Guidance of Frank Stephenson. Both are excellent Designers too.
I went to design school and changed my life because of Chip Foose sketches hanging on the wall of my work place. It was 1998 and I was working as a grunt at a car prototyping place in Santa Barbara. They had some of Chip's sketches on the wall that looked like early Prowler concepts. I would always ask the boss ablout them, who drew them, how he learned how to ect. I ended up working my tail off and going to design school. Chip is a great inspiration!
Excellent idea, Chip, I like the car and I like what you did to it, very subtile changes, enough to make it a step up. Thanks for spending a little bit of your time with us. B.T.
The eye for flow, balance and the importance of color can only be possessed by a true artist. In the future, Chip be listed among the greatest artists of our time! (if not already!) Thank you for sharing your talent with us Chip!
I'd like to see Chip's interpretation of the 49-51 Mercury. It seems like a million have been customized (many poorly) and I'm sure Chip would come up with a fresh approach.
I wasn't really familiar with this car but thanks to Chip I have another new favorite car. As always your drawings are amazing. I went to Graduate School at an Art College and my roommate for my first year was also in the Graduate Program studying Graphic Design and I remember his drawings and art style being very similar. His work was brilliant and he later became an Instructor there as well as working in the industry. The skills he was being taught then we're both in this tradition but he also was learning all sorts of stuff with Photoshop simultaneously. I still love seeing this style of art practiced by a master and showcased here. I am going to have to research this car more. I hope the interior is as nice as the outside. It is really a work of art and engineering.
My father had a friend in the early 70s who had a Mangusta. I remember how cool it was with the glass doors over the engine and as a child it was scary fast. I had no idea how rare and expensive they have become.
Hi Chip, I'm lucky to have a pantera...However I've always admired the mangusta as well . like your image ! It was a pleasure meeting you over the years through industrial finishes.
Long time admirer of the Foose Design Ethos. Polarizing. Trend setting. Intriquing. One master, REDIFINES a modern masterpiece? The Mangusta? Its truth has withstood your careful scrutiny and shone most brightly. Markerlight relocation. Stance, wheeel, color change. Subtle and modern. Color accents the lines better. The gills behind the door windows appear more attractive as well. Steve Mcqueen would drive this in the Italian version of Bullit. Get one and do it Chip!
As a graphic designer I'm envious of his skills with the Pantone markers. As a car fan I loved watching this because DeTomasos were some of my favourite cars as a kid. Especially the Pantera when I found out they had an Aussie V8 under the bonnet.
Nicely done. As a Pantera owner, I've always lusted after the Mangusta too, but my 6'2" frame would never fit in one. The only design feature that ever bothered me was the rear wheel well gap between tire and wheel arch. That's nicely addressed here with the big fatties + the flares. I love it.
I was worried he was going to mod the car. I love Foose's taste & design and he reaffirmed this by NOT touching this car. He knows what he is on about. Fun fact originally the Mangusta was to be called the Shelby mkV ( Chip alludes to this)
I am sitting here imagining Chip foose redoing or just doing a drawing of my 79 Thunderbird Town landau. Hey a guy can dream. Chip foose is one of my favorite if not my favorite customizer in this generation.
Chip Foose, perfect subtle changes. Love the Mangusta, Pantera & the Longchamp. I have been fortunate to see a real Mangusta. Just beautiful. Black on black.
Oh yeah ....Chip. I love watchin you draw that Mangusta. Nice choice of green...i agree. If it was mine....I would opt for chrysler "moonstone"metallic brown with blackouts....or an burnt orange "FooseFade" on the runnin boards n wheel arches n front splitter /chin spoiler....on a cherryblack paintjob...with a hint of purple pearl in the clearcoat finish. BOSS
Respect, but the only change that made an improvement for me was slightly re locating the front signal marker. I wouldn't even touch the wheels. What a car though !!
It's almost as if he's done this sort of thing before. I owned a Eurospec '69 Maserati Ghibli for a few years, another classic coupe. Drove like a truck, but a glamorous truck.
It took a while for the Mangusta to reach prominence. My neighbor had one back in the late 70's. I'd never seen anything so beautiful. He did point out that the cowling area on top of the front fender had a weakness that would cause that area to bulge over time.
@@sammcbride2149 dude, I get it, was very popular in early 70s, if Ford doesn't put out a yellow Mustang they catch hell about it...ahh what makes the world go round
i love how chip foise drops this cars its not eazy line this wheels or shade them wile u draw no wonder he is good look at does wheels so elegant done so right
Haha, yeah that lime green metallic was on everything 'bout 1970 including my winning entry in a model contest local to your shop. Yes the Mangusta looks much more sinister in a dark color which you never see them in. You might have John Player-ed it up a bit with satin brass wheels and trim but I like the rendering as is. If I knew my way around a marker like you I would have made that kit car-ish looking marker light a long sliver and made the door handle the same like those dope flip out 300sl gullwing ones. I worked with a guy ages ago who sold his Mangusta to pursue his dream of building a 3 wheeled enclosed Honda powered futuristic looking vehicle called the Phantom (Ron Will).
Hardly a change in the drawing ... I’m looking how sexy that car is and saying “ how can anyone make that car more sexy than it is ... even that color .... wow great job Foose ! ✌🏼👍🏻❤️
I agree with you Chip, the C8 could have been a beautiful car much like the Mangusta. I was hoping they would go back to their mid engine prototypes that have that simple elegant design. I was hoping they would use curves not angles. The C8 has grown on me but it could have been a show stopper going back to basics without over designing.
I was a good Friend with a guy named Kent Bordiniat, (son of Eugene, FoMoCo's chief designer), back in the late 70's to early 80's and his Dad had a burnt orange one of these “monsters” which Kent let me drive on a couple of occasions and the only thing that “stuck” in my mind was the “full-race” clutch that the car came standard with, (you almost needed two feet to depress it), but it was dangerously fast. A quick stab on the far right pedal would send you in the opposite direction in a heart beat. Great memories!!! I've lost track of Kent...anybody know where he is? (Talk about a long-shot huh?).
Being mid engined i would add some aero to help it handle better front and back wether it be black or body coloured. Wheels would be blaxk to emphasise the cars lines. Other than that maybe modern lighting and carbon panels to keep it light and durable. Maybe increase area round vents to keep it cool so raise away from bodywork to pull in more air. Form and function
Good idea on the wheels for looks, however, it rides rough as is and seems unlikely that you can modify the suspension without a major "life changing" design to make it ride reasonably...better have some nice smooth road ahead or just move it out of a trailer. Your drawing also corrects somewhat a minor design flaw that does not show so well on the photographed green car as it shows on others. That is the line at the front of the rear wheel well where the upper radius over the tire then hits the center body line crease and drops down too straight. I have one that I have owned since 1974 or 75 and had minor "cancer" fixed and all lines straightened and panels adjusted and an amazing black paint job. I told the painter what I wanted done with that wheel well line and he ask me to demonstrate it with masking tape so I taped it to give that line a slight curve instead of the drop. It makes a real difference by simply removing a little material to make the bottom of that panel maybe a 1/2 in forward. I also removed the front marker to really clean it up and no rearview mirrors. I had one period mirror on the drivers side siliconed to the little quarter window and it looked clean. Not real practical but then this car is not and visibility is poor at best. I have had a Countach as well so I am used to this issue. Maybe you want to buy mine...the drivetrain is out of the car right now.
Great to see Chip execute the design - next time maybe in deTomaso favored Metallic Blue color. I've always been visually struck by the slats that resemble a shark's gill openings. Its a shame so few remain today: only about 250.
Chip drew my grandpa a sketch of his 32 ford that we still have to this day and it was my grandpas favorite picture. Thank you Chip for that.
Fluid lines into rolling art
Pantera wow. Thank you Foose & De Tomaso
I’ve always loved the De Tomaso Pantera and Mangusta.

I have to agree. We had two Geese in our club. It was a red one that took my breath away. Beautiful car.
I'm glad that Foose chose not to mess with a perfectly designed car. The subtle tweaks are just what it needed.

Simple, elegant and beautiful designs are always better than the C8, Lambo, Camaro etc christmas trees they serve up to us today.
It’s so relaxing watching Chip draw in all his brilliance, unfortunately the music isn’t very relaxing.
Pure pleasure watching Chip design/redesign a car.

i love how chip foise drops this cars its not eazy line this wheels or shade them wile u draw no wonder he is good look at does wheels so elegant done so right
Better then a printer, Foose is the best!
Stunning!
I like that Chip embraces earth tones so much.
G'Day from South Australia. Yes I share your love.....of em too. Your show rates well down under on 9rushTV😆😎👍👌✊✌✋👊
i will choose foose as a best car designer probably ever besides his talented in his art work and building cars
Now, do a Lamborghini Miura....again, not much to change?
the headlights?
Hardly a change in the drawing ... I’m looking how sexy that car is and saying “ how can anyone make that car more sexy than it is ... even that color .... wow great job Foose ! ✌🏼👍🏻❤️
Grande De Tomaso 🇦🇷
Cool look now! You know what makes style. 😎👍
Foose is master at small details.
Chip, perfect job!!! Mangusta looked never better!
Stunning
Yes! Amazing!!!
my friend let's go for a cruise, Chip 🙋♂️🍻🇨🇦
Yep.. making marker work look rich and smooth without airbrush aint easy.
Amazing
Fabulous artist
Bravo! We need a place to make requests! Mine is '67 Eldorado. So close to being really, really good.
C8 comment is dead on Chip!
Great to see Chip execute the design - next time maybe in deTomaso favored Metallic Blue color. I've always been visually struck by the slats that resemble a shark's gill openings. Its a shame so few remain today: only about 250.
