You may be a Nissan hater but this was practically a love letter to the Z and what a letter it was! I'm a pretty big nerd when it comes to the brand but even I learned a fair bit about past entries. Kudos sir this was a fantastic video.
The fact that they're using existing parts (engine, chassis) is a good sign. It means the new Z will be reliable because all the parts have already been time-tested And even if it's just a 370Z with the Q60 engine, that's still a HUGE upgrade. People spend tons of money to twin-turbo their Z cars. To have it come that way from the factory is a godsend
Considering the fact Nissan was also losing a lot of money, it was kind of a good call to grab a few things from the parts bin for the Z, the good kinds atleast
@TheMilk Trafficker The German team sleeps fine while knowing over half their vehicles are merely leased and the smart owners dump them when the warranty is up because they are fragile in ways Nissan is not. Performance is only wonderful if the car is on the road, not the rack.
I'm buying a 2021 Supra, not because of the supra name, but because of it and itself alone, I like the platform, I like the look, and the drive. It's an amazing car, and it is well deserving of the Supra name, just because it's a sequel to a legend, doesn't mean it has to suck off the original so hard. By far the best recap video of the Z history with so many interesting details and images, quality work-can't wait to see what you create when the new Z comes out next year!
such a good video. We've had Z cars my whole life (born in 74!). Your recitation of its history shares our family's emotional attachment to the Z car -- we LOVE them and owned every version. Then the Z32 came out... Nissan didn't hit a Grand Slam. They tore the cover off the ball, knocked out the stadium lights, and the ball still hasn't landed. OUR kids, teenagers today, see a Z32 and go "whoa! WHAT is THAT?!?!?" I have an Infiniti Q60 Red Sport 400 AWD, which is absolutely wonderful, but I still want a Z32. It's a timeless classic. The Z hasn't been that exciting in a long time. The latest generation Z seems to recapture that emotion in all of us, even our notoriously ADHD teenage kids -- "WHOA! Have you seen the new Z???" I can tell you first-hand that the VQ30DDTT is a phenomenal engine. Best line: "Nissan released a roadster model in 2004 for your mom... :D :D :D "
They kept Z34 chassis code to maneuver stupid Japanese regulations to keep the car cost low. If they called it Z35, they wouldve needed to add whole shitloads of safety sensors, autonomous braking and stupid electronic handbrake. Thank god to Nissan for being smart
Any Datsun/Nissan/Fairlady fanatic who claims not to have learned something new from this excellent video is not being honest with you. Well researched, and passionately narrated!
My anticipation of the new Z far exceeds the release of Supra. Even the new BRZ is more desirable than the Supra in my eyes. It’s not that the Supra is a bad car, I elected to be a Supra technical specialist when I was at Toyota, we wanted a Japanese sports car to go head to head with our euro competitors and the Supra is not a Japanese sports car.
I definitely feel where you're coming from! After opening one for two years, I find myself confused about how I feel. On one hand it's a fantastic car, but on the other, it doesn't have that magic. But maybe that's because most cars don't. Who knows!
This is still the same chassis from 08’. It just looks different and is torsionally stiffer. It’s still a 370 underneath. Nissan didn’t do anything lol.
This is a fantastic video,, thanks for making this! love Datsuns! I was given a 76 280z coupe when I was 12 and drove it all over back country roads. I wanted to restore it but life got I'm the way and killed me to sell it. Well...I rescued a matching number 1976 280z 2+2 out of a junkyard back in 2019 and have been slowly bringing it back to life. Been daily driving it for the last 4 weeks and it's such a fun car. The overhead cam inline 6 has such a nice tone and it's actually a great power ratio for the size of car. You don't realize how small they are until you pull into a parking spot and see the size of the modern cars. I still have lots to do to it but that's part of the fun.
I’m not a Nissan guy, but your video was well done. I’ve always admired the Z from the early days. Thanks for the great history lesson. Can’t wait to see the new Z in 2022.

Honestly what Nissan did here with the new Z is quite clever They used their own resources while reinventing them like the 370Z platform, the V6TT from the Q50 and Q60, then the 6-speed which helps bring this car to an easy $40k and that’s great value for a 400hp sports car in this day and age Toyota however did not have the resources to make their own sports car so that’s why they collaborated with BMW which doesn’t make the new Supra any less of a good car of what the new Z is it all comes down to preference really can’t go wrong with both
You can go wrong with the Zupra. Made in Japan (2023 Z) >>>>>>>>>> Made in Austria (Zupra). Zupra came out last year and already there have been 2 recalls (fuel tank leak and loss of braking power).
Mate Albon - you took the audience on a journey of people, cars, passions, markets and joy 🤩 loved your video and totally feel you …way to go 🤘🏽 the Z is dead - long live the Z!!
I owned a 1971 240Z took me six months to get, this was the first full production year for 240Z, mine was in burnt orange color and I had pinstripe put on it by the man that made Checker Cabs famous. Was an outstanding car I loved it wish I still had it.
The GT market came about because manufacturers assumed the USA was about to outlaw convertibles. That is the reason the 240Z became a coupe, instead of a roadster. It wasn’t long before Mazda, of all manufacturers, realized the fear was unfounded, and a real roadster went on offer, which became the most popular roadster, and convertible of all time.
The production quality and information shared is second to none. I can’t believe there aren’t more views or subscribers. Thank you for the quality content.
I'm impressed! You actually pronounced "Datsun" properly. So many people in North America pronounce it wrong, as in "DOTsun". Just listen to how the Japanese pronounce it, don't take my word for it.
Great video! As a 31 year old, it's not often I get that uncontrollable excited butterflies feeling anymore. But that moment when you showed the advertisement with that glimpse of the Z at the end, for some reason it all hit me like my inner 11 year old seeing a GTR Skyline in real life for the first time! Man, am I excited for this car! I feel like with the way the car market is headed with electric and all that, this may be one of the last of its type. So I have a goal, and that is to own one in the next couple of years. And never sell it. It'll go nicely in the garage next to my 180SX.
Well said. This car will sell like hotcakes. Their target demographic now has money and the car has me genuinely excited to see it in person. I just hope I can hold out long enough for the Nismo before I buy one.

It’s not that Toyota “Couldn’t”, they didn’t want to or have to. Nissan throwing a Hail Mary with the Z, that’s why Toyota is on the throne in the business world and Nissan is not.
I think most people forget that Toyotas now really aren’t meant to be impressive performance wise. Their new lineup is actually pretty nice, but let’s be real here. You don’t buy a Corolla, Camry, Highlander, 4Runner, etc, because you care about how fast it can go on a track. You buy it because they’re reliable vehicles which will last a long time with little to no major issues, and Toyota’s done extremely well in this regard. They don’t have to make their cars impressive because that isn’t what people want when they go to buy them. Nissan’s new lineup also looks impressive on paper, but let’s be real here. They’re not gonna last as long as a Toyota. They just won’t
I like my 370 but Nissan recycling the chasis makes me not to excited for the new Z. I think the 370Z looks better but it'll be interesting to see what Nismo does with this looks-wise. I'm going for a C8 for now. I prefer NA anyway for Throttle response, maintenance and reliability. But the turbos will at least fix the 370Zs most annoying flaw....lack of torque.
@@RockSolitude retaining the chassis is the easiest way to reduce costs in developing cars it costs a ton to certify a new chassis let alone design work and tooling needed to make one by doing so they could keep costs down while focusing on what makes the biggest differences Aero Engine And suspension, by using a chassis that was already built to be track ready the Z should be an awesome car to drive
Great video, but it's not really fair to call the KA24 a Silvia engine. The KA24 really just used in the North American versions that were sold as 240SXs.
Toyota supra sales are rather significantly high in terms of sports coupes. Let give credit where its due, toyota did a great job at keeping the enthusiast sports coupe alive and tbh its one of the best sports cars for 50k or less

This was truly entertaining. I think you have the gift. I watched the entire video and wasn't bored or felt like watching it later. Didn't like to see the 300zx on fire, sort of hated to see that. The fact that many people died while driving the 350z I think has to do with the fact that it was obtainable for many un-experienced drivers because of the price... and let's not forget that it is a rear wheel drive car. I am not a fan of the looks of the 400z but you get a lot for that price tag. That might make me even consider buy one. Even with a new Integra coming up I would buy a 400z without thinking of what the competition is bringing to the table. As long as I can get the interior in black and only black.
The Datsun pronounced "Dotson" name was geared toward the American market as they believed it sounded more American over Nissan. My best friend in high school, had a 73 240z great little car. This new version, definitely shows lineage to the origin of the Z. And thumbs up to Nissan for keeping it in Japanese in-house car instead of rebadging a BMW Z4 and calling it a Supra like Toyota.
Toyota can make a new supra without BMW but peoples will complain about the high price that come with a new platform that why the new Z is built with parts from the recycle bin so it can be affordable.
Explain to me how Chevy built a completely brand new corvette, mid engine, completely new chassis and when it was announced had only a 1k increased msrp compared to the base model c7 stingray (since then the msrp has gone up another 3k which isn't a lot)? Almost all the parts on the C8 were new and not carried over from the C7. Toyota makes so much more annually compared to Chevrolet it's laughable that they can't even make their own sports car without the help of someone else. Technically the new Supra is also built off recycled parts aside from the Chassis.
@@borla4491 They had a choice, they didn't have to make it mid engine but they did, and the car still remained under 60k like the c7 for a base model. The point is if Chevy was able to do that, how come Toyota couldn't make their own Supra, and sell it for the same price it's selling for now? They could've easily taken a chassis from Lexus too. Toyotas move was lazy
@@AnthonyCessor "they had a choice ". No they did not. The front engine Corvette ran it's course. "The car still remained under 60000" Not with Dealership Markups lmao
24:13 regarding that question I know the underside of a 370z pretty good now. I've seen a 400z. It's nearly identical. The 400z is a body kit, motor, and transmission swapped 370z. Now it's both good and bad. Good because most 370z mods will be plug and play as well as issues being known almost right out of the gate. But bad because it's not all new. But I can say the 370z is tried and tested. I both love and hate the changes. But have learned to love it more.
Honestly I don't see it as a bad thing. Someone like me who hasn't owned a 370z isn't affected by this because it's a new platform for me, and the answers the pretty much all the questions I will have are already going to be out there. And for people who have owned a 370z will feel right at home with the chassis but be greeted with more power and revised suspension tuning and a much much nicer interior! I see plenty of 370z cars spanking at the track too, it's a solid chassis that still competes with newer cars. Most of us will be daily driving it anyways.
@@AnthonyCessor Me too! Some Nissan Z fans came up with that "400Z" name way before the actual car even got unveiled... People should stop calling it like that! It only confuses other people who don't know any better...
Then you need to check your history, ghosn was intentionally cutting costs, refusing to innovate and chasing sales numbers for the past 20 years. @@BigHeadClan Actually no that's your problem, because you are completely wrong. Their car's have gotten worse since Ghosn left, and I'm not talking about the way they "look" (even though much hasn't changed, and a lot of those new "looks" were developed while he was still working there, that most likely includes the Z), I choose to look at real life things, like how they perform... So far, you have given no facts to back up what you're saying, and there is a lot of proof to the contrary, like the fact that they've gotten even worse since he's left. @@darronpattel First you would be the one making baseless claims and need to provide context and proof as you are the accuser here, what I've said thus far is to check your history and expressed my confusion at how things are "worse " since Ghosn left as you provided no examples. You have now further confused things by stating not only are things worse but then stated Ghosn was still involved in the design process of the newest models?? What exact performance metrics are you referring too?? Reliability? Acceleration and handling? Sales? Don't dance around the subject. Also that "One individual" was elevated to near hero status within Japan and the Automotive world in the early 2000s and made the CEO and Chairman of the Board of Directors not only for Nissan but Renault and chairman of the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi alliance. He was in total control and was involved at the highest level across all those companies and was the one directing for the entire Alliance. The only ones who had any influence over his decision making was the Board of Directors. But even in that capacity it required majority approval to over-turn anything Ghosn wanted to do, so any major decisions made by the company would have received Ghosn's stamp of approval to proceed. So its entirely fair to say much of what went on from the mid-2000s until 2020 were the results of decisions made by Ghosn because he was running the show . Heck the upcoming Z that this video is dedicated too was killed off under Ghosn at the end of its life cycle, it was only kept alive as a skunks-work project by a few passionate people like Mr GTR and Alfonso teasing the public with a VR30 Project cars which is effectively what we are getting now.

You may be a Nissan hater but this was practically a love letter to the Z and what a letter it was! I'm a pretty big nerd when it comes to the brand but
even I learned a fair bit about past entries. Kudos sir this was a fantastic video.
The fact that they're using existing parts (engine, chassis) is a good sign. It means the new Z will be reliable because all the parts have already been time-tested
And even if it's just a 370Z with the Q60 engine, that's still a HUGE upgrade.
Nonetheless the 400z is an incredible car, and honors the previous models in many ways.
it's better than the A80 anyway bud
That's why I own a 2020 Supra as well!

By far the best recap video of the Z history with so many interesting details and images, quality work-can't wait to see what you create when the new Z comes out next year!
With the GR Corolla announced this aged like milk.
such a good video.

They kept Z34 chassis code to maneuver stupid Japanese regulations to keep the car cost low. If they called it Z35, they wouldve needed to add whole shitloads of safety sensors, autonomous braking and stupid electronic handbrake. Thank god to Nissan for being smart
I believe safety mandates are required whether or not it is a new chassis

I had a 240z 15 years ago. This new z is what I have been waiting for. Finally I can have my dream car. Always love the look of the 240z.
Sadly, the removal of the deck lid vents didn't help emeliorate the exhaust-fume entry very much. We say it adds to the experience 😅
hahaha oh no! That just means you need to drive faster though!
Who knows!

love Datsuns!

But also thanks to you for this video i love the research and effort you put into it. Its really a great ass video.

This video should be trending this week with the 2023 Z driving impression and spec embargo lifted.
Honestly what Nissan did here with the new Z is quite clever
They used their own resources while reinventing them like the 370Z platform, the V6TT from the Q50 and Q60, then the 6-speed which helps bring this car to an easy $40k and that’s great value for a 400hp sports car in this day and age
Toyota however did not have the resources to make their own sports car so that’s why they collaborated with BMW which doesn’t make the new Supra any less of a good car of what the new Z is it all comes down to preference really can’t go wrong with both
Agreed! They had a good strategy with this car!
You can go wrong with the Zupra. Made in Japan (2023 Z) >>>>>>>>>> Made in Austria (Zupra). Zupra came out last year and already there have been 2 recalls (fuel tank leak and loss of braking power).

I never realized that Nissan use to make some really pretty cars. Those classic Nissans doe.
They're really beautiful!
Thank you so much Michael! I appreciate you! Tell your friends!

Toyota sucks

The 370Z had a better chassis than 97% of it’s owners and I’m glad to know the new Z might be rocking the same setup.
It is, it is using the Z34 chassis. Do people never look things up anymore even if they are interested in it?
@@RockSolitude retaining the chassis is the easiest way to reduce costs in developing cars it costs a ton to certify a new chassis let alone design work and tooling needed to make one by doing so they could keep costs down while focusing on what makes the biggest differences Aero Engine And suspension, by using a chassis that was already built to be track ready the Z should be an awesome car to drive

Nissan really went down hill when Renault too over but I don't think that was Carlos Ghosn's fault, in fact they've gotten even worse since he left...
Then you need to check your history, ghosn was intentionally cutting costs, refusing to innovate and chasing sales numbers for the past 20 years.
The company ended right back where it started when he first took over.
Also every single refresh since he left had looker massively better so I'm confused how things "got worse" since he left.
You need to back up what you're saying and not just make baseless claims when you respond to someone, so the burden of proof is on you my friend.
So far, you have given no facts to back up what you're saying, and there is a lot of proof to the contrary, like the fact that they've gotten even worse since he's left.
Lets not forget; you're tying to blame the problems of 2 shady companies on 1 individual person. So you better have some info that hasn't been shared in public to back that up, because I have seen nothing that would prove what you say as true...
He brought the the GTR so, thats something.
@@kensmechanicalaffair He also was leading things when they revived the 350Z.
He just gets a bunch of bad press because a lot of people don't understand how companies work so they will tend to think one person can be to blame for everything.
In fact, that alone in my opinion is why there's a good chance he's just a scapegoat...
That 2+2 260z coupe looks awesome, and is definitely underappreciated. I really like the design of it!
One thing the Toyota Supra has the Nissan 400Z doesn't is availability in Europe.
In 1965 I purchased a Datsun SPL311. It was a follow up to my wrecked "64 Triumph TR4.
